Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo Book Summary

In this brilliant, breathtaking book by Pulitzer Prize winner Katherine Boo, a bewildering age of global change and inequality is made human through the dramatic story of families striving toward a better life in Annawadi, a makeshift settlement in the shadow of luxury hotels near the Mumbai airport. As India starts to prosper, the residents of Annawadi are electric with hope. Abdul, an enterprising teenager, sees “a fortune beyond counting” in the recyclable garbage that richer people throw away. Meanwhile Asha, a woman of formidable ambition, has identified a shadier route to the middle class. With a little luck, her beautiful daughter, Annawadi’s “most-everything girl,” might become its first female college graduate. And even the poorest children, like the young thief Kalu, feel themselves inching closer to their dreams. But then Abdul is falsely accused in a shocking tragedy; terror and global recession rock the city; and suppressed tensions over religion, caste, sex, power, and economic envy turn brutal. With intelligence, humor, and deep insight into what connects people to one another in an era of tumultuous change, Behind the Beautiful Forevers, based on years of uncompromising reporting, carries the reader headlong into one of the twenty-first century’s hidden worlds—and into the hearts of families impossible to forget.

Unfinished. Read one third of this intelligent, informative, book. Felt author should have simplified text. With too many characters, with too much switching between them, it seemed she just lost her way. In saying so much, she said too little. It was easy to loose empathy in the midst of chronic shock. Less characters with more access to their inner lives would have made this a real winner.

Behind the Beautiful Forevers. So glad I bought this book. By that I mean, actually paid for it! My $14 seems like a drop in the bucket to the work that went into it. A sometimes poetic and often aching depiction of ordinary people struggling to survive. I loved the concept of trying to be "good" in a society that more often than not, made it very difficult. Beautiful book.

Great book.. A wonderful book.

Behind the Beautiful Forevers. This is a book not to be missed. So sorry it ended. Harrowing yet inspiring and very thought provoking. Kudos to this author!

Not so wonderful. The first hundred pages bored me to death. Then when I got to the 150th page it started to get a little more interesting. All in all, I would never recommend this book. It's a long drawn out story about poverty. No real plot, climax nor conclusion. Don't get me wrong, it was smartly written. Katherine Boo had to find innovative ways to say the same thing over, and over again. Total bore!!!

No happy endings. A beautifully written book. If you are looking for happy endings then this book is not for you. But if you appreciate the plight of the very poor then you will gain first hand insight into their real lives. I kept waiting for good things to happen and maybe I didn't recognize them as I compared the good that we who will never know their depth poverty experience to their perceptions as to what is good to them.

A must read for all humans. It is sometimes slogging, but mostly not. It is always a picture we want to look at and not look at. The portraits of the children are achingly touching. It is a brilliant portrayal of poverty at its most excruciating. There are so many aspects to this story, especially the contrast that is building between the haves and have nots in the twenty first century. It undeniably touching to the quick.

Beautiful forevers. Katherine Boo has certainly done her research well. She has peeled back the ugly truth of Mumbai's forgotten sons and daughters with a vivid, graphic picture of life in a slum land. This book was an excellent read, I highly recommend it!

Booooooring!. This is one of the most boring and long winded books I have ever read. Driveling on and on in the most mundane and boring detail ...... I always finish a book I have started, this one was a chore. I wish I had never paid for this book, an utter disappointment.

Behind the beautiful forevers. Such a wonderful book. I will forever be humbled by my abundant blessings!

Behind the Beatiful Forevers. Katherine brought back my humanity and for that her book is worth every letter.

Breathtaking. Katherine Boo's has given us something simply breathtaking. The detail with which she portrays the equal parts beauty and ugly of lives lived in unimaginable poverty is in itself a stunning accomplishment. But to do so as an outsider, in a place as unforgiving as Mumbai, and to do so while strictly adhering to fact checking, cross checking and years of interviews is a beautiful gift to society as a whole.

Behind the beautiful forevers. It's a good story, worth reading.

Behind the beautiful forevers. Outstanding and sobering. This jewel makes one aware of the outside world and its trials. Although one is grateful for OUR world, our society, our values, our judicial system, there is a rage that is ignited against the corruption and injustice portrayed, and an obsession to confront, fight and annihilate them.

A must-read. Wonderful, passionate book. An intriguing story and tribute to humanity. This book is a moving, rare glimpse of a world of incomprehensible survival.

Beautiful Forevers Beautiful Forevers Beautiful Forevers. Hard to face; hard to look away. Sad but enlightening. I came away with appreciation for determination and those who can rise above anything.

Poignant Portrait of Slum Life in Mumbai. For those of us privileged Westerners who have grown up insulated from this world of extreme poverty, Katherine Boo has painted an exquisitely endearing and painful portrait of slum life, 'Behind the Beautiful Forevers'. After reading for hours through the middle of nights over the last week, inconceivably, I have come to identify with Abdul and Sunil. At the end I realized this is nonfiction- amazing- read it- you'll see!

Distant View. Several years ago I had the opportunity to visit Mumbai on business, not unlike I had done over the decades to about 35 other countries. The depth of the apparent poverty in Mumbai was unlike anything I had ever seen anywhere else. It was hard to believe that I was still on the same planet. This book gave me some insight into and appreciation of what I saw from a distance during my visit there. Thank you. Charles C Berghoff

Terrible. I kept reading in hopes it would get better. The story jumps from one family to about a dozen others, there are way too many characters and no real plot. I would definitely not recommend this book to anyone.

Great book. This book is heartbreaking in that there is little being done to change things anywhere.

Behind the Beautiful Forevers. Beautifully written. Courageous. Simply wonderful.

Engrossing. Beautifully written characterization of the scavenger families who try to survive, and make their lives better in a slum in India. Some have lost hope, some strive for betterment, and all against a backdrop of the greed and corruption of Indian officials and government. That anyone could have hopes and dreams in this environment is impossible to fathom. Yet, these people live day to day , some barely surviving, surrounded by illness and death, and still some manage to aspire to a greater life. Interestingly, at the end is an author's note where she reveals that the characters are true, and that she actually lived in Annawadi as a journalist, and transcribed the people's lives day to day, as she saw them. Highly recommend this book!

Interesting and at times boring.... Amazing story, worth reading to understand poverty. However the author is at times too descrptive, making the story slow and boring.

Behind the Beautiful Forevers. Great book---

Wonderful read. Surprisingly vivid and dramatic take on life in the slums of India. Readable like fiction but all factual. Incredible.

Light and darkness. A wonderful writer to be able to succinctly express how to live on the underworld of our present society with the understanding that what we do even on a smallest scale of greed and corruption will all hurt all living beings!!!This book help me understand why being very poor has against all odds to survive in the urban jungles...😥

Every American should read this book, twice.. In a few words; life enhancing, every American should read her book.

Not airbrushed. Certainly not a romantic look what living in a slum in India. Gives one a glimpse into the choices, and options, that people actually have living under these conditions.
