The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey Book Summary

In this magical debut, a couple's lives are changed forever by the arrival of a little girl, wild and secretive, on their snowy doorstep.

Alaska, 1920: a brutal place to homestead, and especially tough for recent arrivals Jack and Mabel. Childless, they are drifting apart -- he breaking under the weight of the work of the farm; she crumbling from loneliness and despair. In a moment of levity during the season's first snowfall, they build a child out of snow. The next morning the snow child is gone -- but they glimpse a young, blonde-haired girl running through the trees.

This little girl, who calls herself Faina, seems to be a child of the woods. She hunts with a red fox at her side, skims lightly across the snow, and somehow survives alone in the Alaskan wilderness. As Jack and Mabel struggle to understand this child who could have stepped from the pages of a fairy tale, they come to love her as their own daughter. But in this beautiful, violent place things are rarely as they appear, and what they eventually learn about Faina will transform all of them.

Captivating. Once you start you will not put this down , i have not finished a book in a long long time .. the Snow Child was recommended by my mother and her book club .... What a great story

Wished for more. Very cute read but was let down by the book. Was hoping for a better and more informative ending.

Beautiful and sad ..... So easy to read, such a beautiful story, and so well written. But truly very sad.

Nothing exciting. Good book, but not worth reading again.

Unique. Excellent read. Enjoyed the characters and snowy setting

Excellent!. This was an exciting, interesting, intriguing story that kinda reminded me of the Laura ingalls wilder books I read as a child only this was set in Alaska. The ending was happy and sad but was satisfying all the same.

The Snow Child. Great read!

The Snow Child. Well written and compelling story. Congratulations on an excellent first novel!

The Snow Child. What a fantastic adult fairy tale! Just loved it. Wished it could go on and on.

magical, lyrical, haunting. One of the most beautiful and unique books I’ve ever read. I never wanted it to end. The imagery, the story, and the beautiful, beautiful writing held me captive.

Magical. Deeply moving and mysterious.

An Extraordinary Book. The writing is lyrical. The characters are well drawn. The setting is magnificent. And the story . . . I really don’t have words. I sobbed at the end, not because it was sad, but because the emotions it evoked were too strong to be contained.

Loved it!!. Beautifully written and engaging. A book you start and can't put down. Will recommend this to friends. Thank you for such a wonderful story!!!

amazing.. I read this book in one sitting, and I don't often do that. I couldn't sleep without finishing it. It is a heart warming story that makes you think. I felt as if I were really in Alaska with Jack and Mabel. Beautifully written.

The snow child. Spellbinding refreshing original. Pristine wilderness descriptions like those from Cold Mountain heighten all the senses with an almost hyper real presence. Both the land and the snow child tantalize the reader on the mysterious edge of reality. I loved this book and it's characters, especially one, are now a part of me. Thank you. Mark

Captivating. What a lovely story. I was captivated by the scenery and dialogue and characters. I felt as if I was in cold, snowy Alaska. With every chapter, it read as a fairytale and a true story, at once.

The Snow Child. Lovely, sweet & magical!

The Snow Child. I loved this story. It was a mix of happiness and sadness and how loved ones pull together when things are difficult. Mixed with a little magic it was so heartwarming.

The Snow Child. After reading the book preview....I was hooked. Knew that I had to purchase this book to find out more about the part reality and part fairy tale settings and characters. The author did a great job bringing both to life and really stretching your imagination!

the Snow Child. What a wonderful and magical story. It pulls you into the sadness, the hardness and the joy. Hated to see it end!!!

Unexpected. An unexpected and original story. Very satisfied

The Snow Child. Beautiful storytelling, only wish there were more Books!

Luminous!. It' hard to believe I stumbled upon such a wonderful book! Radiant and disquieting, believable yet dreamlike, this novel is like no other I have read before. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

The Snow Child. Magical. I couldn't put it down. Dying to make it a book club selection with my friends.

Charming. It was definitely a charming read. However, I always felt like some event was just about to happen, but it never did. The novel left me wishing for more.

Mesmerizing!. I want to give this story a warm hug. It wrapped me in its furry soft pelt from beginning to end. I haven't read anything like this since I was a child. It is like an adultish fairy tale. It weaves in and out of a dream. Thank you, Eowyn Ivey!

Fairy talelike!. Like a fairy tale but yet believable. Fast read as well!

The Snow Child. A beautiful work of fierce loveliness. This story is haunting and charming all at once, an immediate and all-time favourite for me.

The Snow Child. I enjoyed the book full of family love compassion and togetherness that’s is not always easy to come by these days

Great book. Being a Russian, fairy tail reference was great, it was a surprise and sometimes hard to read as you anticipate what would happen. Good tension. Was really impressed with the book, would highly recommend it -real treasure.
