The Things They Carried Book Summary

A classic work of American literature that has not stopped changing minds and lives since it burst onto the literary scene, The Things They Carried is a ground-breaking meditation on war, memory, imagination, and the redemptive power of storytelling.

The Things They Carried depicts the men of Alpha Company: Jimmy Cross, Henry Dobbins, Rat Kiley, Mitchell Sanders, Norman Bowker, Kiowa, and the character Tim O’Brien, who has survived his tour in Vietnam to become a father and writer at the age of forty-three.

Taught everywhere—from high school classrooms to graduate seminars in creative writing—it has become required reading for any American and continues to challenge readers in their perceptions of fact and fiction, war and peace, courage and fear and longing.

The Things They Carried won France's prestigious Prix du Meilleur Livre Etranger and the Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize; it was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award.

The Things They Carried - Tim O'Brien Reviews

This takes me to a place I never was - not in real time - but now I have been there, a place that at times has seemed very real, as if I HAD really been there, and yet knowing I hadn't. Reality, in many cases, doesn't hold a candle to what you THINK might have happened, and yet this book BECOMES reality- and allows the reader to understand the difference - from what is real for him/her, (the reader) in their imagination, and what the author lived, and still lives - every day.

I'm 73 years old, I never went to 'Nam. Married senior year in college, bun in the oven, deferred student. All my buddies from high school in Northern New York did ship out however. '65 was the start of the chaos. I've probably read twenty of the best reviewed books on 'Nam trying to at least partially understand what they went thru. Regrettably not really possible Two of my best friends have not returned. I will never get over this . Thanks Tim for your super recollection.

This book may be sad, but it is far from bad. It puts you in the soldiers shoes, shows you their losses, and how they cope.
