Survivors by James Wesley Rawles Book Summary

This lightening-paced instant New York Times bestseller about survival in America after an apocalyptic economic crash asks the question: What if the world as we know it ended tomorrow?

The America we are accustomed to is no more. Practically overnight the stock market has plummeted, hyperinflation has crippled commerce, and the fragile chains of supply and high-technology infrastructure have fallen. The power grids are down. Brutal rioting and looting grip every major city. The volatile era known as “the Crunch” has begun, and this new period in our history will leave no one untouched. In this unfamiliar environment, only a handful of individuals are equipped to survive. The world of Survivors is a terrifyingly familiar one. Rawles has written a novel so close to the truth, readers will forget it’s fiction. If everything you thought you knew suddenly fell apart, would you survive?

Silly. The author needs professional help. Not for the writing, which is passable, but for his world view. I'm proudly conservative politically, still, this guy is way too far right for me. If we are to view the novel as a cautionary tale, then go load up on guns, ammo, gold and silver and hunker down with your MREs and dried beans at your totally defensible yet self-sustaining farm while the world rights itself. Oh yeah, mutter a little prayer every now and then (as the main good guy characters are inclined to do). To tolerate this read, you also need to accept the various deux ex machina plot avenues, the boat being in the right place at the right time, the perfectly trained horse that makes Trigger look like a nag, the welcome stash of guns and ammo conveniently hidden in the secret panel in the wall. Like I said, silly....

Survivors. Worst book ever. Laugh out loud funny but not intentionally. This is some libertarian gold standard wing nut's daydream about how cool it will be when the "world as we know it" ends and the cool guys with guns and coins made out of silver and gold survive. Nothing surprising if you have ever heard any of those guys talk. Nothing creative nothing new. Boring. Poor writing. A plot that would be sketchy even for a short story. Save your "government controlled paper dollars".

Might be my favorite out of this series. I really like the whole ronin aspect to it, very fun.

Painful. Love this kind of fiction, but this author needs to take a course or two in writing.

This 2nd book. After reading the 1st book, I was very excited to see a 2nd story coming out by this author. I pre-ordered it and waited the release. The 1st book was extremely well written with a great story line and characters that truly came to life out of the pages. I had a difficult time putting it down and was sad when I reached the book's last pages. The 1st book gave me great pause in my thinking of everyday life here in America. I've been lucky enough to live and travel in many of these areas that the books events take place. This 2nd book of Survivors is no where near the quality or depth of story as was the first. This story line is interesting, but sections lack the follow through. This book, unlike the 1st, is riddled beginning to end, with religious bible pounding. It forces the reader to endure the author's beliefs and practices almost on every page. If I had known that this was a book about his religious beliefs and not the author's best "Survivors" follow-on effort, I would not have wasted my money. I bought the book for another Crunch experience not a Sunday school lesson. Two Stars, that's it. Re-read the 1st one.

Great followup on Patriots. The book was true to form on details, with an almost field manual approach to bring true realism to the story. While not as much of a surprise on story line because I had already read "Patriots", the book is an excellent supplement and brings plenty of new information, suggestions, and story into a global situation, painting a broader canvas of a very complicated precept. I really enjoyed the incorporation of livestock and more interaction with locals, trading bits on types of currency, and more on economic conditions of survivors. And the movement of the book is far more reaching, giving more of a glimpse of the entire world in crisis, instead of a smaller view. It had much more of a sustainable feel than "Patriots". I am hoping for an arctic-terrain inclusion into the franchise next.

Survivors. Pretty good with lots of technical detail. Not as good as Patriots. Love Rawles' stuff.

Provides good backstory for previous book. Carries many themes from first work that work well if you haven't read it, but is overly repetitive if you have. Content and story development contain a lot of characters so pay attention or you could get lost. A good read overall!

Awful. Painful. Author confuses military acronyms with plot and character development. Does every single character really need to do a Tebow to make a decision??

Great book. Very realistic, it was well thought out and the story line was fantastic!

Falls well short of Patriots. 3 out of 5. Not nearly as good as Patriots. This book was full of side stories, like Patriots. Some went into great detail while others lacked content. Some were excessive, leaving you wondering why it took 30 pages to tell a back story which seems trivial. Then the book ends. One side story has a conclusion. The rest, which you have established concern over are simply forgotten. I turned to the last page expecting to have at least three more chapters in it. If you like Rawles, SHTF novels, calamity, can spare $10-12 bucks and can put up with constant references to the authors beliefs on religion then go for it. Front to back in two days.

Good read. I enjoyed his 2nd book. Thought provoking, entertaining and informative at the same time. For those whiners saying "it's all killing...bloodthirsty" blah blah blah. Just check yourself into a FEMA camp and let the government take care of you now. It's nothing compared to what reality of war, survival can be!

Simple. The writing is very basic and simple. It did not keep me interested. Guns religion killing, strange combination.
