Les Misérables

Les Misérables by Victor Hugo Book Summary

Jean Valjean spent nineteen years in prison — five for stealing bread, fourteen for trying to escape. Valjean tries to make a new life for himself, but he cannot escape the stigma of his past, nor the oppressive watch of the cold-hearted Inspector Javert.
Fantine is a working class woman barely scraping together enough for herself and her young daughter Cosette. Both mother and daughter are exploited by the greedy innkeeper Thénardiers, who keeps demanding more and more money. Fantine’s health begins to deteriorate, and in her desperation she begins to consider prostitution.
These are but two of the unfortunate souls from Victor Hugo’s massive novel about rebellion, redemption, authority, romance, and justice. Les Misérables is a rich, complex, profound, and heart-breaking work of historical fiction, and one of the greatest novels of all time.
This includes all five volumes, as well as illustrations by Émile Bayard. Also, many of the more poetic passages are preserved in the original French, side-by-side with an English translation. (Can't do that on Kindle!)

- Excellent!5 star

Excellent! Many plots in one book, each one exciting and interesting. Very well written.

- LOUSY EDITION1 star

It needs to be reformatted and have the text fixed. It should be more like the Signet Classic edition, March 1987 edition or later. It is a five star book.

- Lés Miserables5 star

Lés Miserables ( Or Le Mis) is an amazing story. The characters are very thoughtfully made, and the story is interesting. 10/10 would read again.

- Absolutely amazing!!!5 star

I read this book in fourth grade and loved it!!

- Les miserables...5 star

Fully amazed with this incredible book how hard I wish the whole world could read this book

- This is the best book ever5 star

This is one of the must-thread books. The meaning that this book bears is so deep and humane. It is one of the book that after reading it will make you reflect and contemplate life.

- Weird translation3 star

This is the second time I've read the unabridged, and the translation in this ebook is just strange. I can't get past how they use "ejaculated" every five minutes during an argument for someone shouting. For being free it's better than lugging around a 1400 page book, but try a different translation.

- Les misèrables is amazing5 star

This book is amazing! I am in love! I just love this!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

- Les Miserables5 star

This book is so much more than a wonderful story. It has French history; philosophical theories from Victor Hugo; praise for Napoleon and the French Republic. It is by far the best book I have ever read!

- Beyond words5 star

After spending over ten months with Valjean and company in the undertaking of reading this great work, I can only say it was entirely worth it. It is truly a masterpiece, and one that must be experienced. It is free, so there is no reason not to download it. The translation was refreshingly literary.

- Awesome.5 star

Favorite book ever, definitely worth taking the time to read.

- All time favorite5 star

Jean Valjean is favorite all time literary character

- I am officially obsessed!!5 star

I haven't read it yet but I watched the old movie version in school, I saw it in theaters and its coming back to Broadway!!!! Can't wait!

- Les Miz review5 star

An excellent book. The story surpasses the attempt at filming and stage playing it.

- Which translation is this?3 star

Does anyone know who translated this edition?

- I finished Les Mis.3 star

It took me some time, but I finally finished Victor Hugo's Les Miserables. Like Jean Valjean pushing stubbornly over the Alps in the death of cold; facing the whips of scorn for being an ex-con; and the pain of carrying a dying young man through the dark hazardous sewers, I have pushed past the interruptions of Napoleon's rise and fall, the numerous chapters on Waterloo; the history of Paris and its sewers to reach the end of the story. My love of the story and it's 20th Century music, drives me to the conclusion. This novel includes me into the pieces of the story I had missed on Broadway and it shares the historical visual treasures that are in the movie. I can now say, farewell and God bless Jean Valjean.

This book was excellent and I enjoyed it a lot

- Wonderful Read- not too difficult at all!5 star

I really do think it's just the preface that scares people off. It's all just one long, rambling sentence and it gets tedious. I'm only a tenth grader and I understood and enjoyed this novel just fine. It definitely did some good to take a pause and re-read/think about some parts at times as the wording can get confusing. I think that if your reading comprehension is up to par and you have a dictionary for the harder words (which shouldn't be hard, since apple devices have built in dictionaries) then you'll enjoy this thoroughly.

- Errors5 star

It is missing some pages????

- Help?3 star

I don't really understand the book first book second thing. Does that actually mean a new book? Or like the same thing but just seperated? I don't get that part. Mostly because it does book first more than once. Same with the other ones....

- Great Classic!5 star

Long but worth the read. Great story of love and redemption! I will never forget the tale of Jean Valjean!

- Classic5 star

Kids who say it is too hard, yes it is intended to be hard. You can not criticize the book on the difficulty. It is a classic it better be hard.

- Transcendent5 star

In Les Mis, Victor Hugo examines the human condition in an insightful and piercing way. Light is shed on the relationships which do and could exist between one person and another, a person and his community, and a person and God. Be warned, that reading this book may lead you to think about what kind of a person you are and what kind of a person you want to be. I can promise though, that it will be a rewarding and enlightening experience.

- I LOVED it5 star

Omg 6,383 well read even though I had to have a dictionary close by

- Les Miserables is Right1 star

This is a time when I will just watch the movie. I felt confused after just 10 pages and the many archaic words that I had to look up in the dictionary. Not my type of book.

- Confused.2 star

Downloaded it and I'm well over 200+ pages in and we haven't hit a main character. All on the bishop. If this is the unabridged version I'll read the edited one first. Was starting to think the phone downloaded the wrong book. And it's over 6000 phone pages.

- Great details5 star

U can't explain how great and well written this is. It expresses feelings that make u think the author is talking to you. 19th century and still totally classic and awesome. - written by an eleven year old

- Long but worth it!5 star

Les Mis is a fabulous read and a must for any real lover of literature. Fabulous characters, riveting plot, and a heart-wrenching social commentary on the old French society; it's a work of art.

- Worthy.5 star

Absolutley awesome. Very well written, and I love all the side plots. The characters are so real...

- Les Miserable5 star

While a long book, and not an easy read, it is a very satisfying read. If you are a fan of the musical, it will really help enhance the story. It's a great mix of history, philosophy and fiction. There are some points when he just goes on and on about things that are really tangents to the story, but it is worth persisting through such things.

- Excellent Read!!!5 star

Although lengthy I found this book thoroughly engaging and hard to put down. The characters are well written and you easily feel for each and every one. I felt a vast range of emotions felt through the book and would recommend to anyone. If you're a fan of the musical this has to be read at least once!!!

- Les Miserables5 star

The most powerful book I have ever read, I was totally immersed in the story and the characters from beginning till the end. Hugo educated me into the deprivations of that period of French history, how lucky most of us are in the first world to only have learned of the suffering and hunger reading on our iPads.

- Les Miserables5 star

Heart-rending masterpiece of human emotion. I was enthralled by the early 19th century observations of Paris and political history of the era.

- It's nice5 star

I'm 10, and I watched the movie and wanted to read the book. It was long, not surprisingly. It was cool for a medieval time setting, coz I'm the silent type. 😑 First time I read a book this long... ANYWAY, 2 words: Amazingly cool.

- A great read5 star

What a tour de force, taking the reader through a historical and emotional gallop through post revolutionary France. Beautiful descriptions of Paris , strong evocation of poverty and criminality, and a breath-taking landscape of human depravity and good laid out for us.

- ARGH WHAT DOES THIS MEAN????3 star

This book well I couldn't bear to read it. It was boringly long, there were big words I had no idea what the meaning was it was hard to turn the page. I read it but hated it. DO NOT GET THIS BOOK UNLESS ARE OLDER THAN 12 IT'S VERY CONFUSING!!!!!!!!!!!! I liked it a little.

- Extraordinary5 star

Society condemns the poor. But people can rise above their means and be vindicated by society. The premise of Les Misérables will never expire. The social ills of today differ only marginally from those of Hugo’s epoch, and the story’s pertinence will never wane. Hugo’s writing is inspiring and poetic throughout. The descriptions of love – for one’s child, one’s sweetheart, one’s freedom, one’s country – are incredibly moving. Confronted with these 531,000 words, it certainly helps to be a bit of a Francophile with a general interest in history. Nevertheless, I challenge anyone not to be enlightened by this extraordinary book.
