Revan by Drew Karpyshyn Book Summary

There’s something out there:
a juggernaut of evil bearing down to crush the Republic—
unless one lone Jedi, shunned and reviled, can stop it.

Revan: hero, traitor, conqueror, villain, savior. A Jedi who left Coruscant to defeat Mandalorians—and returned a disciple of the dark side, bent on destroying the Republic. The Jedi Council gave Revan his life back, but the price of redemption was high. His memories have been erased. All that’s left are nightmares—and deep, abiding fear.

What exactly happened beyond the Outer Rim? Revan can’t quite remember, yet can’t entirely forget. Somehow he stumbled across a terrible secret that threatens the very existence of the Republic. With no idea what it is, or how to stop it, Revan may very well fail, for he’s never faced a more powerful and diabolic enemy. But only death can stop him from trying.

Features a bonus section following the novel that includes a primer on the Star Wars expanded universe, and over half a dozen excerpts from some of the most popular Star Wars books of the last thirty years!

Better than I expected. I longed for closure from the KOTOR series for years. This book has provided that. I breezed through it and was captivated throughout. The end was sad, rather sudden, but not bad. The epilogue brought a tear to my eye.

Great Book. I loved this book it started off slow but then everything came together. The fights were well described all though the fights didn't last long

Amazing. My first Star Wars novel and I finished it in two days. I was on the edge of my seat most of my read. I can’t wait to start the next one.

Ok book. I found this book pretty entertaining in parts and pretty bland in parts. I, like others, thoroughly enjoyed Darth Bane, and found those characters much more compelling and memorable.

More Old Republic stories!. This was a great book I liked it a lot! They should really make more old republic books in my opinion. It has a lot of Star Wars history to it.

A Personal Favorite. An amazing adventure for a complex and beloved character!

Only average. I thoroughly enjoyed Drew Karpshyn's work on the two Mass Effect novels, but this book isn't as good. It gets highly compelling at the end, but then closes right at the last chapter with kind of a whimper. I was hoping for more of a proper closure for the KotOR series but instead this books concludes just as what it is... A teaser for Old Republic MMO. It's a decent book, but not Drew's best. I would have rather seen him do another ME novel instead of having Dietz do the next one. Alas...

Another good one Drew.. Awesome story man. Kind of a downer ending in the book but I've already come across the continuation of your story in The Old Republic MMORPG. I still have to say that your Darth Bane trilogy is still my favorite. P.S. I'm still sorry about your Spurs, Lakers continue to rule.

Terrible ending. This book was a really exciting and entertaining read until the end. The ending seemed rushed and pointlessly trashed some of the SW universe's best characters. It did a disservice to fans. I'm pretending that I never read this.

Revan. What a depressing ending. But the rest of the book was entertaining and got me excited to the the KOTOR ps5 remake

One of my favorite books. I loved this book, he only downside was the ending, which I expected to be a little less devastating. Other than that this was a great book.

Wow. Amazing. Connects even the most minute details of KOTOR 1 & 2 and TOR together. This is just the beginning...

Not bad, until the end....... The ending ruined would have been a good book . The entire story sets would should have been a great show down...very disappointing

good book tho. 4 stars bc the ending was awful and stupid

Amazing Book. Because of this book(and KOTOR of course) Revan is my favorite Star Wars character! Now I’m a Star Wars fan big time, and I’ve read a lot of books of this genre but this one is the best of all. I will admit the ending wasn’t as good as I had hoped for but if you play SWTOR, it all makes sense. Great book 9/10 hands down. Deeply recommend it

Loved it!. Loved the two original KOTOR games. *********SPOILER ALERT******** The ending is not your traditional fairy tale ending. You will be in your feelings! 😊

Fantastic. I haven't played Kotor so I don't know the full back story of the characters, but I still think it's a phenomenal book.

Good but short. It was a quick easy read. Found it difficult to put down!

I don’t think that Revan is that much like the Revan that I knew from KOTOR.. This Revan did not have the same feel as the other Revan from Knights of the Old Republic. They kinda ruined his personality as the old one. Still they got the backstory of Revan PERFECTLY!!! I give it three stars. A nice try. I like the effort put into these books. That’s what makes them enjoyable.

Great, but has flaws.... As a big SW fan, and someone who has played KOTOR 1, KOTOR 2 and currently playing SWTOR, the book helps explain Revan's fate and a certain character's who is crucial in SWTOR. The story switches between multiple characters both old and new, but doesn't feel like it was part of KOTOR, barely making references and vaguely mentioning important events(like the defeat of the Sith Triumvirate by Meetra). The book somewhat ruined the idea of Revan choosing to become a Sith, forcing it on him and Alek. But, the book is great and the reason Revan is alive is *SPOILER* he lives in SWTOR as a Republic Strike Team rescues him. Great book, wish it had more KOTOR references and a little more development of the characters.

Revan. One of the best star wars books ever

This should be a movie. I read this a week ago and I love it. Revan is such an underrated character that comes from an underrated Star Wars game. I know the all of the other reviews are whining about the ending, but it didn’t really bother me that much. Overall, an amazing book and now I figured we absolutely NEED a movie about The Old republic and have Keanu Reeves play Revan. #LongLivetheEU

Buy this now. I Love Revan!!!

Terrible ending (spoilers. Overall the book was interesting and fast paced but the betrayal by scourge end the final battle and the fate of revan ruined the book for me

Are you serious!?!. I don't want to spoil anything but the ending leaves sour and disappointing taste in my mouth.

The Force is with this one.. I know, I know..... Plenty of us Star Wars nerds/fans have probably said this about multiple Star Wars media. But here’s the point: If you were and are a fan of Kotor 1, Kotor 2, and Swtor (for those of you who don’t know what that means: Kotor= Knights of the Old Republic and Swtor= Star Wars the Old Republic). You will love this book especially if you played both Kotors with light Side cannon endings with cannon gender, yes I say genders because: if you chose the wrong gender and the dark side for each game you will be utterly confused by the sudden gender swap and moral compass flip. This book explains how the legendary character Revan came to appear 300 years later in Swtor. The ending is a gut punch of emotion and I would also recommend the audiobook because it has sound effects to increase immersion. If you have never played Kotor 1 or 2 I suggest you try them out; unlike the PS4, the Xbox brand allows backwards compatibility for old games. So you can play the original Xbox versions of Kotor 1 and 2 on a new gen console, that may even speed up the loading screens (I don’t know if the disks work from the old gen I bought them digitally). If you don’t think there worth the purchase: buddy boy you are wrong. The first Kotor has reveal as big as Empire Strikes Back; and while I was less interested in Kotor 2, due to the story not appealing to me, (maybe it will be the same for you or better) it does feature better graphics, gameplay, and is overall the superior version in all but story. After tagging both games on my Xbox hub I contemplated whether I should buy and play them because: while I heard good things (many good things), I was afraid that due to the sudden shift to such an old gen game in graphics I would not connect. But boy, once you shift your mindset back into old gen with a wayyyy better controller you can see why these games are considered the best Star Wars games of all time. I would say that if you prefer pc it’s not a good idea to play the first game because it is a port that cannot go to full screen, Kotor 2 doesn’t have this issue. I would suggest you play this on Xbox or Xbox One (Xbox one s and X are the same way), play the first game as a sarcastic light side Jedi guy with long brown hair; and play the second as a pure Jedi girl with brown hair. You can play both with Dark side powers and not get penalized so don’t worry. If you have a friend or family member that owns the games digitally have them do the game share feature for your Xbox. The PS4 has a similar feature but the profile that is sharing the game must not be online to play the games shared; while the Xbox One allows me to play a game like Black Ops 1 with him online without hindrance. And lastly this book explains what Revan did inbetween Kotor1 and Kotor2 and effectively gives you an ending to those games. You don’t need to play Swtor to see what happens next in Revan’s story, but if your a fan of the Old Republic time period and a fan of the Kotors: listen to the book and go play the Swtor game and its dlc titled: Shadow of Revan.

Great book. Thank you for writing this ,its amazing

Amazing!. Must read for any KOTOR or SWTOR fan

Doesn't do Justice. Sadly this story of Revan completely destroys his character and disregards the amazing story told to us through the games. In essence, it seeks to explain his destination better left untold and then kill off his character. It ruins Revan for the fan of the originals. So glad it can't be considered canon.

Good read.. Since I started reading it, I constantly wondered what would happen next. Read the entire book shortly after making the purchase. Worth it.

Very good read. This book was very good. It will be a good read for any Star Wars fan regardless of their knowledge of the expanded universe. It is a must read for anyone that plays SWTOR.

Worth it. Really liked this book👍🏽👍🏽

Master piece. Excellent tie in to KOTOR and SWTOR really fills the gap between the two games and allows for a more easier transition to SWTOR and must bay for old republic fans and over all Star Wars fans alike

kotor3. ALL I SAY IS I WANT KOTOR 3!!!!!!!!!

More. I want to learn of revan but I ended lusting for more if revan ! To short but fast read maybe

Uh. Ended wayyy too short. Surprising.

Amazing. This book was amazing a must buy

This was great. I read this book, and at first I thought it lacked good action and proper storytelling. The author used a lot of the same phrases or similes in the beginning. But then I fell like it got better. Those two problems were washed away and this became a great book. I am currently reading fatal alliance and it is as good as deceived and revan. I automatically though that I was going to like deceived when I started reading it, but not entirely with this one. But it turned things around. I would recommend deceived or revan to anyone who I know likes Star Wars and likes to read.

Great characters. If you like SWTOR must buy. Loved the books pace and plot. Rich characters. Throw back nods to kotor and if you play swtor it will be familiar territory. Pacing is great felt like watching a movie as I read the book!

Burn it, forget it and start again. Revan is a very charismatic character, not to mention one of the most powerful Sith/Jedi ever and this author seems to care very little about the history and lore of one of the most beloved characters in the SW universe. He just scratched the surface of what could have been a great story and instead decided to rip it apart. I wish I never read it. Revan's story needs a reboot.

A+. Great book, sudden ending....

Could have been better. Should have been.. Found this to be very shallow, lacking real character depth. Surprising considering how well done I though Darth Bane PoD was handled. Felt more like fan fiction then a full on Lucas endorsed Star Wars novel. Makes my dreams of writing Star Wars seem a little more possible.

An average Star Wars book. Although the book is based in legend surrounding the Old Republic game, it was still fairly easy to gather the history of the character. This particular book in the series moves a bit slower and the story seems a bit “pieced-together” rather than flowing smoothly. The parts about Mandalorian history and the history between Revan and Malak are very interesting, but only play backstory roles. I would recommend Revan to any Star Wars fan just for the history provided. The most engaging parts of the plot for me were the details of the Emperor, how he came into power, and how he had maintained that position for so long. Looking back on this book, I think fondly on the absolute menace of the emperor but very much less in the novel.

Better if you've plate the video games. I have taken on the nigh -impossible task of reading the Star Wars novels in chronological order. Being blind, I'm pretty unfamiliar with the Old Republic video games. I know Revan, the main character in this story, is a huge part of those games. I'm sure the twists and turns of this story are much more meaningful when one has that background experience. Coming into this cold, I had a hard time caring about what was happening to these characters. Having said that, once the novel gets going, its a pretty fun ride, leaving me eager to pick up the next novel and continue my journey.

Not the very best, but still not too bad.. I expected a lot of this book since Drew Karpyshyn's Darth Bane trilogy is one of the best Star Wars trilogies that I've read. Although I feel the story had a slow start, I think it redeemed itself with some pretty good action and a nice ending (although the ending does leave you hanging). I highly recommend this novel to any Star Wars EU fan.

Thrilling Suprises. Never reading a Star Wars novel before, I have to admit my expectations weren't that high, but boy was wrong. I almost liked this better than the movies! In fact, this was much more compelling and reading about the Sith and Jedi at peak power was fascinating. Revan is now my favorite character. Overall, this story had many wonderful psychological turns and twists I felt like the author was mind tricking me! You should have a fun time reading this.

Probably the best Star Wars book i've read.... I already loved Drew's writing of the Darth Bane series and he didn't disappoint on this one! When I first heard about it I had to read it, and when I heard Drew Karpyshyn wrote it I absolutely had to read it. The book explores characters that needed more info (I won't spoil it by saying who they are). The end is sad but I felt it was a logical way of ending this particular story. Don't listen to the haters! Go read the book! You will want to read and reread the book a hundred times!

Best Star Wars book I’ve ever read!. Got me into reading all Star Wars books

Worst Ending Ever. Great read until the end. The ending is absolutely horrible. If you like Revan, DO NOT READ THIS! Cling to your KOTOR game and forget you saw this book. The ending is that bad. I read the reviews saying that the ending was horrible but never did I expect this....

Ending Bummed Me Out. This was a very suspenseful and compelling read. I liked most of the story-line, but the ending was a bit of a let-down. In the spirit of avoiding spoilers, I’ll just write that I wished for something more cathartic.

Revan. Big fan of Karpyshyn! Loved the bane series. Revan is a good read. It does come to a rather abrupt end. Almost as if its being saved for a sequel. Certainly, left me wanting more!!
