You can’t stop the future.
You can’t rewind the past.
The only way to learn the secret . . . is to press play.

Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a strange package with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers several cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker—his classmate and crush—who committed suicide two weeks earlier. Hannah's voice tells him that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he'll find out why.

Clay spends the night crisscrossing his town with Hannah as his guide. He becomes a firsthand witness to Hannah's pain, and as he follows Hannah’s recorded words throughout his town, what he discovers changes his life forever.

Glorifies Suicide. Not only is this just a badly written book in general, but the actual topic of the book is just so freaking horrible (rape, suicide, etc.). Also, the show is, like, 100 times worse. 0/10 don’t recommend

Terrible. Hannah killed her self for no reason

Wish I read the book first. From the moment I opened this book, I couldn’t put it down. There was something so tragically beautiful about Hannah’s story. I also watched the television series and felt that there was more detail that was in the book that tied everything together. This was a hard read because of the subject but it was done in the best way possible.

A Very Intriguing Book. It's a shame that I watched the Netflix adaptation before reading the actual book, but the book itself stands up quite nicely on its own. One of the few gripes I had about the book was how the rest of the characters weren't as fleshed out as Clay and Hannah were. I'm supposed to just go along with what Hannah says & what Clay thinks about the people on the tapes. Fortunately, the show does a great job at that. Another problem I had was how fast-paced it felt, with how Clay was listening to all of the tapes in one night. For something as heavy handed as the fate of Hannah, I would've expected Clay to take his time with it. Again, the series fixed this problem. Other than that, it was a marvelous book to read. I hope that the author would follow the series' lead & write sequels to the book. It doesn't exactly have to follow the Netflix version, but a follow-up story would be nice.

Not Entertaining. I wanted to like this book but I found the characters so annoying. I think Hannah was such a contradiction, selfish, and lacked any TRUE reason for committing suicide. She was so self-absorbed and irritating. Clay was also annoying and I got sick of reading this book. I even tried to give the Netflix series a shot to see if I was being too harsh about the book, but realized I disliked the story even more after watching it. I get what they are trying to portray, but my sympathy is lost on Hannah.

AMAZING ❤️️😱. I'm in love with the book and the serie

AMAZING❤️. This book is great, but even better as a tv show!

Amazing. Absolutely love this book. I had already watched the Netflix series of 13 reasons why and realized that the book and the TV show we’re actually not outstandingly different. I think the book really does help the series, with that being said I don’t think that it is absolutely necessary to read the book before you watch the TV show but if you do it that way, that way being a show van book, Like I did it’s probably going to be a little triggering because there are parts in the book that really don’t go into too much detail about what happened to two characters but I personally think that if I had read the book before I watched the TV series I would’ve understood it a lot better it would’ve been I guess more real, raw, fresh.

13 Reasons. Very good, I prefer the television series though.

Entertaining, but anti-climatic.. The book kept me hooked, but the end leaves us hanging.

AMAZING!!!!! EVEN THOUGH I ONLY READ 30 PAGES!!!. I LOVE 13 REASONS WHY

So different. Compared to the show a half different story

Alex kills himself in the end. Lol

13 REASONS WHY I LOVE THIS. This book is great. It has so much mystery and suspense its crazy! It has a great story line! Love it!

Amazing. I love this book. It covers really hard topics that are difficult to talk about and opens your eyes to the things suicidal people have to go through. I read this at 12 and found it quite spectacular. For those of you who say Hannah killed herself for no reason, I think it can seem that way when you read it from an outsiders point of view. When you imagine yourself experiencing those traumatizing events, the reason of Hannah’s death becomes a lot more clear. Excellent book, though definitely for more mature readers

Love it but why do they treat her like that?. Every body treats Hannah like crap no one even cares for her!

13 Reasons Why. I needed this book in high school. I played around with the idea of suicide, but was to terrified to try it. I never spoke about it because it hurt so much to explain why. But thankfully i made it and have a wonderful family to live for. But thank you so much this is such an inspiration!!

Pretentious and boring. I couldn't wait for the book to end, as the subject is unfolded through an uncanny inability to go deep into the character(s). Too American, in the most negative way possible.

Powerful. This was such a powerful book. Yes, it was sad, yes, it was sometimes disturbing, but sometimes in life you have to go through discomfort and/or fear to learn your greatest lessons. This book gives you empathy for what suicidal people really go through. It was very well written, I couldn’t put it down until I reached the last page and it really felt like you were going through the book and experiencing it with Clay and with Hannah as well. 10/10 would recommend reading this book, it would be good for everyone to read.

13 Reasons Why. Rushed

Not great!!!. I hated it!!!

The show and book was amazing!!!. Amzing!!!

Loved it. I rarely read, but I read this and I loved it so much. Definitely recommend👌

Wow. What a great tv show really had a impact on me hope I see more seasons in the future! Can’t wait for season 4.

The show. I watched the show on Netflix IF YOU LIKE THIS BOOK GO WATCH THE SHOW... ok so I hateeeee reading and that explains why I'm failing English haha whatever I thought that the book was going to be bad idk why... when the show came out I was cutting and I could relate to Hannah I could feel what Hannah was going through and how it also effects other people if you're reading this please don't be a bish to anyone words do hurt people and the words can he so horrible they can drag you to kill yourself

Ok gracias ñ. Oh T776@'y la ñvt

Good book. Kept me interested and has a debatable story line .. good read

The Best Book I have ever read. The book hits you hard in places you thought you never felt and you just can’t stop reading and I love it. It’s emotional, funny and it points out everything that some High Schoolers have to go through and it’s sad but it is a very precious story, just about life, friendship, and trust. Again it's an absolutely AMAZING book and I highly recommend

Do not read. Terrible book do not read especially if you have thought about suicide. Very suicide promoting

Hmm.... I watched the TV show, and then I found out it was a book, so I thought I’d check it out. Despite it being a very controversial story, I feel like it does bring awareness to a lot of social issues. I’d highly recommend it.

best work of jay Asher. one of the best book in teen drama gener

Ending. Terrible ending...

Good but could have touched more on the bullying. It was definitely a good read. Read it in two nights. I felt like it could have touched more on the bullying topics more though. There's a movie that came out a while back about a girl who commits suicide because of bullying and the movie was better than this book in relating the two. Good book, though.

So Sad. I read this book when I was in a really tough patch in my life. My brother committed suicide 2 months ago so that’s still raw. But when a fried recommended it, I thought I would hate it. But I didn’t. So read. I hope it does the same for you as it did for me. #readbannedbooks

love!. this book was so good. it kept me entertained through the whole thing and wasn’t predictable

Very good -amazing. This book is awesome and it discusses the concepts between life and death and that how what others do or say Can really harm a person mentally and physically and how may people to suicide and depression which is discussed in this book and how no one noticed the signs leading up to her death-by all matters I love this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👌🏿

Love it!. One of the best books I've read, it doesn't only give an example of today's teenage life but how social media affects some teenagers and how it can drive them to a decision that has no turning back.

HORRIBLE. I read this only because everyone was raving about it, but I found this so hard to read. It was so boring and wayyyyy to long for the story line. I did not like this book. I found myself counting down the pages until I would be finished. Wasn't for me and that's ok.

Books are always better.... Famous Quote. The Netflix series was fantastic!! But the book had my heart first.

Couldn’t put this down. I’m not an avid book reader, but after watching the Netflix series based on this book, I had to read it. Of course, with any adaptation to film or in this case, a series, there were differences, but I think that this book delves into a topic that many see as taboo, and I think that is the main reason that the Netflix series got so much bad press. Most, not all, of the struggles that Hannah faces seem trivial if they were only isolated events, but the author, Jay Asher, does a great job of building these events into the tragic story of Hannah. There seems to be an underlying depression that this poor girl deals with that is not so much laid out in black and white, but is felt while reading.

This is a great book. It got me thinking about things I have said to people, and things people have said to me. I realised that people don't truly understand what they are saying to others.

Best book. This is the best book i have read in my whole entire life. It really touched me and got me thinking about what i have said to people and what am about to say to the person that I don't like. you should really read this book its awesome Jay Asher knows how to capture your attention!

Just to show you. Just to show you how good this book is go to the top right hand corner of the review and choose most critical- none are bad For sure I of the best books I ever read

Really good book. I really loved the book very nice written

Hauntingly beautiful. I loved this book, hauntingly beautiful, amazing read

Amazing Book To Read. reading this novel has future educated me towards the importance of understanding are actions towards are words that we choose to say to others and understanding the Consequences they have towards other Individuals. I recommended this book to everyone to read and Nourishment and understanding from this.

Omg sooo good. This is amazing

The best book you will ever read. This book is amazing. From beginning to end I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it. The message was so beautiful and I loved the ending

Very Insipirational. I found this book to be very entertaining, gripping and very emotional. I cannot put into words what my emotions are because I cannot describe them. I love the characters, the way it all plays out and just generally everything about the book. You can really feel what the characters are feeling and I love how Jay Asher has put both points of view in, when only one character really exists in the book. I literally could not put this book down and cried more than once. I give it five out of five stars, for being one of THE best books I've ever read.

Gripping. I couldn't put this book down. Just like the character in the novel you won't be able to stop. I can't discuss the details without spoiling it so let me just say that suicide is very secretive and not talked about in north America. I think that is bad. Depression is a sickness and people need to understand that instead do ignoring it. Great job Jay Asher for such an intense novel that will make a difference in the world.

Inaccurate. Often the dialogue of the novel was painfully flat, and the characters which play the protagonists pass blame on the all the wrong people. This novel was an inaccurate representation of teen suicide, and does not deserve to be used as reference to a suicide victims struggles.

Outstanding!!. This book is officially my second favourite book of all time! I think this book should be a mandatory read in all high schools.

Embarrasing. This book made me laugh on how half of the reasons why she killed herself was because of nothing

fave 😍😭. I can't wait to see the movie! 😭 this book is amazing and I love it so much 💖😍

One of the best. This was probably one of the best books I have read. I really love the idea of the story and how the main character sends tapes to the people who have affected her life causing them to realize what they have done. Very nice quotes too. I almost cried when I got to the last few pages.

JonasBrothersRule. This book ... there aren't enough words to describe how amazing it is. Jay Asher really knows how to do his stuff. 13 Reasons Why is a must have. Not only will it change your view on life but it will bring the most good out of you.

Wow!. A friend of mine read the book and said how amazing it was, and I just had to read it too!

Amazing!. This is definitely one of the best books I have ever read!

It showed me. Thirteen reasons why showed me that even in the darkest of times, there is always someone there to care. Everyone should read this book.

Literally my favorite book.. The writing in this book in incredible. Especially considering this is Jay Asher's first published book. The emotions and thoughts of Hannah are incredibly real and hit close to home and there is something everyone can take away from this book. Whether you are Hannah, Clay or any of the other thirteen reasons. I borrowed this book years ago from a library and in the time I had it I renewed it twice (the maximum amount allowed at said library) read it three times and lent it to several friends. I have since bought my own copy and gifted it to many friends who have loved it as much as I still do. It's been probably five years since then and I probably reread the book every six months, and take something different from it each time.
