The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley Book Summary

A NEW YORK TIMES AND USA TODAY BESTSELLER!

"I've loved every one of Susanna's books! She has bedrock research and a butterfly's delicate touch with characters—sure recipe for historical fiction that sucks you in and won't let go!"—DIANA GABALDON, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Outlander

A hauntingly beautiful tale of love that transcends time: an American writer travels to Scotland to craft a novel about the Jacobite Rebellion, only to discover her own ancestral memories of that torrid moment in Scottish history...

In the spring of 1708, an invading Jacobite fleet of French and Scottish soldiers nearly succeeded in landing the exiled James Stewart in Scotland to reclaim his crown. When young Sophia Paterson travels to Slains Castle by the sea, she finds herself in the midst of the dangerous intrigue.

Now, Carrie McClelland hopes to turn that story into her next bestselling novel. Settling herself in the shadow of that historic Scottish castle, she starts to write. But when she discovers her novel is more fact than fiction, Carrie wonders if she might be the only living person who knows the truth—the ultimate betrayal—that happened all those years ago.

A sweeping historical fantasy of love, danger, and time travel, Susanna Kearsley masterfully weaves Scotland's past into Carrie's present in this stunning book.

Very good. Complex and very good read

Excellent. Couldn't put it down. The weaving of history and romance was flawless. Loved it!!!!

The Winter Sea. Who knew historical fiction could be so engrossing?! Absolutely LOVED this book!

Enchanting, but slow beginning. I almost gave up trudging through the beginning of the book, however once it got going it was hard to put down. I found myself thinking of Scotland and the characters throughout my day and couldn’t wait to read again before bed. It certainly made me want to book my own trip to see Slains and stay in a coastal cottage.

Winter Sea. Totally absorbing! Instead of skimming past the descriptive passages, I found myself re-reading them just because they were so beautifully written. I will download her next book immediately!

New fan. I was so surprised by how wonderful this book is. I'm a fan of romance, but not "romance novels". THIS is what a true, pure romance story should be. It all starts with history, and a great writing style. The romance is part of this and not overpowering or rushed. This is going to dwell with me for a while. I look forward to reading more of her work!

Great read for Outlander fans!. If you love Outlander you will enjoy this book. It is not as grand a story as Outlander but still a very enjoyable one and very much worth the read.

Wonderful!. Love this book. Got lost in the story.

Winter Sea. Enjoyed this book immensely! It was so easy to become involved with the characters in each time period! Loved it!

The Winter Sea. Not one to write a review but this book takes you into a world that seamlessly holds you from one century to another and makes you comfortable in each. As much as I think technology has made us into zombies within our own world, there's nothing better than downloading a brilliant book at midnight and reading until dawn.

Love!. Read this book a long time ago and I remember I loved it! Especially the story that took place in the past!

Winter Sea. What an incredible read! I could not put it down even tho I HAD to take my time! The history lesson was awesome! But the best was the story from the woman about her descendants! I can’t wait to continue reading her books.

Highly recommend. Such a great read! The flow between past and present was effortless. I felt like I was part of each scene! I am so glad I found this book!

Winter Sea. Loved it! Found the characters interesting and likable. I am sure I will retread this book many times.

NOT science fiction or fantasy. I really was disappointed in this book. The male characters were cartoon characters and the heroine never engaged me. It read like one of my mother's grade B romance novels. If you like Outlander... And the only reason I mention that book in the context of this one is, that as I was searching for a way to write this review I saw another poster mention it, this book will bore you to death. I wrote the review because this is the first time in my life I have ever wanted to take a book back and demand a refund. Many of the fantastical elements are glossed over, none of the "real" elements feels real. I want my money back... And my investment of time.

Best Book I've Read in a While. I couldn't put this book down - I tore through it in 2 days. I loved the dual plots and how they eventually became one. This book is romantic, but not overly so like some romances are. It's classier than that. The end was very emotional and it touched my heart. Bravo to the author. I hope she writes more books as good as this gem. I'm recommending Winter Sea to all of my bookworm friends!

Enjoyable. I read this after the first Outlander book. I enjoyed the characters and the romance, but for me I was transported by her settings. (I have a trip to Scotland planned). The history got a little long-winded at times, but I enjoyed the book's length just as well. Not the absolute best historical fiction I've ever read, but I did REALLY like the story line of her lovers. Glad I read it; would read her again.

Modern Gothic. Susanna has a way of writing characters that remain with you long after you turn the last page. All of the books I've read from her are magical in that way (Mariana, The Shadowy Horses and the sequel to this one The Firebird. This is a dual timeline novel with a present day author writing a romantic fiction piece and what happens to her along the way. Both parts of the story are fabulous and the historical parts are interesting and concise. I didn't want either story to end, but alas they did. The audiobook version was very well done, so consider either or both. I also highly recommend the sequel (of sorts) The Firebird due out in June 2013. I bought the UK version which is out. One of the main leads is Robbie from The Shadowy Horses.

History lesson. Great story, but had to skim through all the history parts. Too much detail in that area for me to enjoy. I may try another of her books.

Just WOW. This is what I call a real romance novel! I just loved this book, I found myself so wrapped up in the characters. The author really had a way with words - expressing spoken, unspoken emotions and the description of settings was magical. Im just sad that it finally ended :( I thought it could've been longer, it seemed a bit abrupt.
