Red Mist by Patricia Cornwell Book Summary

With high-tension suspense and cutting-edge technology, Patricia Cornwell—the world’s #1 bestselling crime writer—once again proves her exceptional ability to entertain and enthrall in this remarkable novel featuring chief medical examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta.

On her quest to find out exactly what happened to her former deputy chief, Jack Fielding, murdered six months before, Scarpetta drives to the Georgia Prison for Women to meet a convicted sex offender and the mother of a vicious and diabolically brilliant killer. Against the advice of her FBI criminal intelligence agent husband, Benton Wesley, Scarpetta is determined to hear this woman out.

Scarpetta has both personal and professional reasons to learn more about a string of grisly killings: the murder of a Savannah family years earlier, a young woman on death row, and then other inexplicable deaths that begin to occur at a breathtaking pace. Driven by inner forces, Scarpetta discovers connections that compel her to conclude that what she thought ended with Fielding’s death and an attempt on her own life is only the beginning of something far more destructive: a terrifying terrain of conspiracy and potential terrorism on an international scale.

And she is the only one who can stop it.

Middle of the road. Well,,,, better than her last few books. Not jumping all over and switching subjects so suddenly that you had to check and see if you turned too many pages or skipped a paragraph or two by accident. My interest was held better but it did not live up to her earlier works in suspense and cannot put it down category. Hopefully Ms Cornwell is getting back on track.

Laborious. Plot was good but took entirely too long to set it up. It was like muddling against the outgoing tide, thinking it would surely get better, which it finally did but not soon enough for me. I thought the sentences entirely too long...just sorry I spent what little time I have reading this when there are other books that would have been better.

Nana bunnie. As always Cornwell delivers. Taking reader through a ride that you don't know where you will end up!

Not impressed. I used to read the Scarpetta books religiously, then dropped off for awhile. This was my first one in several years. I'm sorry to say I wasn't very impressed. This one wasn't much of a page turner, and never really built up any suspense. I grew kind off weary reading Dr. Scarpetta's meandering thoughts. This one will probably be my last.

Not much to this book to cost list price !. Not worth the price!

Boring. I couldn't wait to finish. She drones on and on in self reflection. The story never unfolds.

Better than the last one. Almost back to normal Aside from all the medical, legal and psychological experts missing the obvious “twin” answer that becomes apparent to the reader almost immediately, this was a refreshing return to solving mysterious deaths for which we used to all read the Scarpetta series. Kay’s progression seems choppy and some times not well derived but she gets to the truth eventually. Sadly, the story is still mired in a world in which everyone wants to take down, kill, frame and ruin Kay Scarpetta – a plot that is increasingly getting monotonous and incredibly unbelievable. The story further diminishes the expertise and street smarts of Marino even as Agent? Doctor? Therapist? Husband? Benton Wesley’s role becomes less and less defined. I was glad to get back to Kay using her unique talents and education to investigate but disappointed that it seems to be at the expense of the other characters’ participation and further growth. Lastly, thank you for finally introducing a Scarpetta colleague who is normal, friendly, and has no ulterior motive to destroy her – now we know there is at least one in the vast Cornwellian world.

Unimaginative and Boring. I'm a big PC fan and have been for many years, but I could not get through this book. I am so disappointed. I finally realized at page 300 that it was not going to improve, so I stopped reading. Lame plot.

Does Kay ever have fun?. P. Cornwell, I hope you read your reviews. Could you consider giving Scarpetta a happy side? It would give your devoted reader a break from her constant angst. She is perpetually angry and in perilous danger, and altho we realize a good book needs a good problem, for Gawd's sake, I want to see Kay have a bit of fun!(Cooking eggplant parmesan does not constitute good fun, don't even try....)

Red Mist. Horrible! Boring, boring, boring. Waste of money.

Terrible. One of the most contrived, poorly written books I've had the misfortune to read in some time.

All together again. A fine intricately woven tale with a bit of everyone in Scarpetta's life assisting in unraveling a series of deaths. Worth the read.

Red Mist. Not convincing. Trigger happy Lucy shoots 'em up, again.

Winey Scarpetta. Scarpetta is very winey and self-absorbed in this book.

Red mist. Cornwell, as usual, excells in the creation of plausible characters and in entangling them with one another in complex muti-dimensional relationships. Scarpetta's skill and self confidence as a forensic pathologist, and indeed as an italian chef, are welcome counter points to the darker neurotic guilt-ridden side of her personality, and make her a very acceptable heroine. The plot, however, operates on too many fronts and becomes unmanageable, so that resolution can only be achieved by unlikely coincidences and a rather heavy handed deus ex machina. If it were not for this, and the rather tedious and unnecesarily detailed description of scientific proceedures, i would have given another star. I hope I am not being too picky, but Cornwell has set her own high standards. Nenufart.

Suspenseful. Enjoyed this! Continuation from Port Mortuary. Kept me glued to the book from beginning to end. Recommended for Scarpetta readers.

Awful. Feels like I started reading in the middle of a story. Refers to things in last book but it's been a long time and many books in between to remember everything. Too many characters to sort through. Having a hard time finishing it but since it cost so much I will.

Red Mist. I'm a big fan of Patricia Cornwall and usually love the novels featuring Kay Scarpetta on many levels but this one was disappointing... In my opinion the end was weak and not up to par-- she usually nails it and leaves you feeling thrilled and in awe. This one missed the mark and felt contrived

Unanswered questions!. Through all the meandering through the past (Benton, Marino and Lucy), I thought the story line was good... But, then at the end, left a few unresolved questions for me!!! I feel like she had her page quota met...and wrapped the book up too quickly! Glad I checked this one out at the library, at least not out any money on an ending that fell flat!

Red Mist. Red Mist doesn't disappoint!

Red mist. This book is not worthy of Patricia Cornwell. It plods along with no bang for my buck. Sorry.

Patricia Cornwell is back!!. Red Mist is the book that has brought vintage Kay Scarpetta back to us. Loved the book, the plot, the characters and the attention to detail that Ms Cornwell is known for. This book is all about the things we love about Kay, Marino, Lucy, and Benton. Welcome back Kay and Patricia....we missed you!

Red Mist. Never fails! I couldn't stop reading from page 1. The plot twist are excellent. It was like being home with your favorite characters.

Red mist. Red Mist is very good read. Enjoyed it!

Waste of time. Most of the book is about her niece, Lucy, (actually Patricia in real life ) and not a mystery. If I want a romance book, I'll try another author. Patricia Cornwell has changed.......let's hope she comes back !

Tired. I gave up after 220 pages, really disappointed and plain bored. Scarpetta needs to focus on solving crimes more and her personal relationships - especially her niece and her love life, yaaaawn - a lot less.

Disappointed. This book really missed the mark. 220 pages to set up an inmate passing a note so the main character can decide to investigate a case. A waste of time, I suggest the next time the author has nothing to say to close the computer until until she has a bit of inspiration.

Red Mist. One of her best novels in a long time. Thoroughly enjoyed it!

Red Mist.. Once again another mesmerizing book from Patricia Cornwell. She is the master of suspense thriller's with each book being better then the last!!!

Great book. I love all of Patricia Cornwell's book! This one doesn't disappoint. Well written and accurate!

Good mystery!. I love Kay Scarpetta mysteries

Great Read!. This book was great; once the plot thickened I couldn't put it down! The suspense throuthout an unexpected twist for Scarpetta and her team will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final page.

Not again. Sorry PC fans, couldn't even get through the sample. How many descriptives can you cram into a sentence before the reader is either lost or overwhelmed? Two stars because of a color picture and that's about it. Where her story telling genius go and who is ghosting?

Could be better. Not up to your usual standards. Started slowly, ending confusing. Still a fan, tho

Red Mist. Patricia Cornwell did it again. Amazing book cant wait for her next one.

Red Mist Delivers. As usual, Cornwell delivers yet another great novel with twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat. It is Scaerpetta at her best - I couldn't put it down.

A good read. A Scarpetta story is always a good read and this is no exception. I noticed a lot of typos in this book...
