No, They Can't by John Stossel Book Summary

The government is not a neutral arbiter of truth. It never has been. It never will be. Doubt everything. John Stossel does. A self-described skeptic, he has dismantled society’s sacred cows with unerring common sense. Now he debunks the most sacred of them all: our intuition and belief that government can solve our problems. In No, They Can’t, the New York Times bestselling author and Fox News commentator insists that we discard that idea of the “perfect” government—left or right—and retrain our brain to look only at the facts, to rethink our lives as independent individuals—and fast.

With characteristic tenacity, John Stossel outlines and exposes the fallacies and facts of the most pressing issues of today’s social and political climate—and shows how our intuitions about them are, frankly, wrong:

• the unreliable marriage between big business, the media, and unions

• the myth of tax breaks and the ignorance of their advocates

• why “central planners” never create more jobs and how government never really will

• why free trade works—without government Interference

• federal regulations and the trouble they create for consumers

• the harm caused to the disabled by government protection of the disabled

• the problems (social and economic) generated by minimum-wage laws

• the destructive daydreams of “health insurance for everyone”

• bad food vs. good food and the government’s intrusive, unwelcome nanny sensibilities

• the dumbing down of public education and teachers’ unions

• how gun control actually increases crime

. . . and more myth-busting realities of why the American people must wrest our lives back from a government stranglehold.

Stossel also reveals how his unyielding desire to educate the public with the truth caused an irreparable rift with ABC (nobody wanted to hear the point-by- point facts of ObamaCare), and why he left his long-running stint for a new, uncensored forum with Fox. He lays out his ideas for education innovation as well and, finally, makes it perfectly clear why government action is the least effective and desirable fantasy to hang on to. As Stossel says, “It’s not about electing the right people. It’s about narrowing responsibilities.” No, They Can’t is an irrefutable first step toward that goal.

Eye Opener. I knew government screws up everything it touches, but this book puts it in perspective. It's a great read, and I can hear Stossel saying the words as I read. Highly recommended.

Eye opener. Extremely educational, opened my eyes to more than what I thought, and it simply fell under just common sense.

No They Can't. Basically supports no government. Not by facts but whimsy, should be in fiction category.

His argument.... Doesn't work. He is advocating essentially no government, which has proven to be unsuccessful in history. He doesn't cite many sources and he is providing a lot of false information. I am in several AP classes where reviewing governments is key. While conservatism has good points in it, it never succeeds when put to the extreme. The Great Depression was caused by these policies, and it took a balance of both liberal and conservative policies to get us out of it. We need to start being bipartisan instead of so incredibly biased.

The Negative Reviews Didn't Read The Book. While I don't agree with everything Stossel says, he makes a lot of good points and has a convincing argument. Big government really doesn't work. Obama is taking the country in the wrong direction. The thing is, he's not really a Republican either - he says Republicans are just as guilty as Democrats for overspending. The answer is Libertarianism - get the government as much out of your life as possible. Stop entitlements, legalize drugs and gay marriage, and make this a country conducive to doing business again.

Sad.... ... That people give bad reviews and don't even buy or read the book. I bought the book and read it. It was insightful and gives many examples as to why the government can't solve ALL of our problems. Nor can it stop sad little people from resorting to name calling... Grow up, just because you don't agree with his politics doesn't mean you have to waste your time going around and reviewing all books with authors' ideologies that you don't agree. Get over yourself and let the people who actually bought the book review it.

Great Book. Awesome book, full of interesting facts and real eye-openers about government and really everything. Tell all your statist friends to read this!

It's right on the money. A great read

An excellent read.. Once again Stossel proves privet is better public and free markets will always work better than government.

Pretty Good. Written in Stossel's down to earth style, this book conveys the common sense of the libertarian outlook. It's definitely worth reading as a dose of reality about the impact of big government meddling on society.

Very good book !. An eye opening read for those who have an open mind.

No, they can't. How do we convince mainstream media to start exposing Big Government waste and failure?

Don't Even Agree With The Premise. No human believes that government can solve ALL their problems. Sure, it can alleviate many and if you're in a hostage situation, your chief concerns, but ALL? Stossel is a master at creating a strawman and then destroying him. If you want to see how to weave an argument of straw and then sell it for gold BUY THIS BOOK!

Classic Stossel. Pretty much a recap of his topics and shows over the last few years. Nice to have in all one place and it was a quick read. Well done chapters and pacing.

Decent. Stossel tries to cover too much and doesn't dive deep enough into any of the subjects. Unlike his work at 20/20 which gave very deep explanations about eachsex ample, I felt like I was getting a 30-second commercial of each example. Good read for someone just trying to learn about Libertarian issues, but otherwise a lot of the same stuff. Still a huge Stossel fan and I'll definitely read his next book as well.

No, they can't. Wonderful read. Won't be popular, but I'm glad to have been exposed to this. I hope Stossel keeps up exposing the comprehensive impact of different programs on his program. The examples of solutions that have been achieved by private citizens and other governments was refreshing.

Complex Concepts Made Simple.... ... but not oversimplified. America is in a crisis and people struggle to get their "fair share." The problem is that "fair share" is defined by comparing what they get to what others get, when in fact, everyone is getting more than their fair share - which is why we have a deficit. This book does a good job of looking at the economic realities and offering suggestions for real change. It does so without the religious moralizing of the right or the government nanny-stating of the left, but simply looking at what services of government are essential and which can be handled better by the private sector. It's a shame that people in America feel so entitled to so much that they are afraid to fix the problems directly in front of them because somebody else might get something they think they deserve. I don't expect a book like this to have any real impact on things, but we would be so much better off if it could. As a side note, this book reminds me of a management structure for projects called SCRUM. It is also based around the concepts of allowing those with the most knowledge and the most at stake to make project choices. In one famous example scenario, they ask people to stand on a series of lines that intersect. Each person must follow a path to get across the room without colliding, they must stop at intersections until given instructions. Managers must direct them to "stop", "turn left" etc until they get to the other side. The same scenario is then run but employees are given the leeway to simply make the correct choice. Of course, the objective is much more easily accomplished. America needs less of the government directing our actions and more individual choice to make the right descisions.

Great book. Awesome and informative!

Straight to the point!. Stossel - Thank you for being you. You and your team have produce a great work. Keep it going.

Yes WE Can!. Stossel shares facts and ideas that every single person living in America should read. I'm educated but I sincerely appreciate his clear, factual and simple explanations. Yes, it's an "easy read". That's what we need, not thousands of pages of political crap that we get from our so called legislators in both parties. Have you ever looked up how many federal agencies we have in this country? There are long lists in each letter of the alphabet! What the heck do they all do for us and how much is each of their budgets? Stossel, please keep educating us. With information we Can get rid of big government.

Great read. John puts it all into basic terms that we can understand, America needs to wake up or go the way of Greece and the others about to collapse

Tells It Like It Is. A real eye opener by a veteran reporter who has delved deeply into many aspects of government and society. He writes with a practicality and sincerity seldom seen these days. This book is required reading for anyone who is tired, frustrated, and overwhelmed at the complexity of modern government. Stossel isn't afraid to say what he thinks, and what he says makes a lot of sense. He is a modern-day prophet.
