The Dark Tower IV-1/2 by Stephen King Book Summary

Soon to be a major motion picture starring Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba

In The Wind Through the Keyhole, Stephen King returns to the rich landscape of Mid-World, the spectacular territory of the Dark Tower fantasy saga that stands as his most beguiling achievement.

Roland Deschain and his ka-tet—Jake, Susannah, Eddie, and Oy, the billy-bumbler—encounter a ferocious storm just after crossing the River Whye on their way to the Outer Baronies. As they shelter from the howling gale, Roland tells his friends not just one strange story but two...and in so doing, casts new light on his own troubled past.

In his early days as a gunslinger, in the guilt-ridden year following his mother’s death, Roland is sent by his father to investigate evidence of a murderous shape-shifter, a “skin-man” preying upon the population around Debaria. Roland takes charge of Bill Streeter, the brave but terrified boy who is the sole surviving witness to the beast’s most recent slaughter. Only a teenager himself, Roland calms the boy and prepares him for the following day’s trials by reciting a story from the Magic Tales of the Eld that his mother often read to him at bedtime. “A person’s never too old for stories,” Roland says to Bill. “Man and boy, girl and woman, never too old. We live for them.” And indeed, the tale that Roland unfolds, the legend of Tim Stoutheart, is a timeless treasure for all ages, a story that lives for us.

King began the Dark Tower series in 1974; it gained momentum in the 1980s; and he brought it to a thrilling conclusion when the last three novels were published in 2003 and 2004. The Wind Through the Keyhole is sure to fascinate avid fans of the Dark Tower epic. But this novel also stands on its own for all readers, an enchanting and haunting journey to Roland’s world and testimony to the power of Stephen King’s storytelling magic.

Absolutely Fantastic!. Written in true Dark Tower excellence. So glad to hear yet another awesome story with our old friends. Buy it and read, if it do ya! You won't be disappointed.

So glad to be back in Mid-World. Once again, a tale that I couldn't put down from cover to cover. The rich story telling of Stephen King at its best. He never writes as well as when he plays the hand of Gan and let's the stories of Roland's ka-tet come though. I hope this is not the last we hear from them. But as they say... there will be water if Ka wills it.

Good read, but I felt let down.. As much as I enjoy reading all Dark Tower stories over and over, this one was a disappointment. Although written in the same style and with all the beloved characters this was a story within a story. This reminded me of the short story of Roland and the little sisters, and in my opinion would have been better added in a re-release of either volume IV or V. If Mr. King decides to release another in between book I will save my money and check it out from the library.

The wind through the keyhole. One of the best of the dark tower series because king is doing what he does best. Storytelling. He's also less wordy in this, which is a relief.

Everything You Love About The Dark Tower And More!. This is a very nice addition to the DT series/collection and reads well even if you haven't read any other books in the series. It reveals more about the world Roland Deschain comes from without spoiling much of the plot and even contains a story within a story as in Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Very well done, Mr. King! Bravo!

Great!. A great addition to a story I hope never ends...

More Please.. I could keep reading about this Ka-tet forever.

Good enough story.. I'm glad to have a little bit more of a manageable page count on this book compared to the last few of the Tower story. There is a pretty bad glitch near the end that repeats the same page over and over but I was able to get past it after a while. There's really not much to Roland's story at all, in the present or in the past, as most of the story revolves around a tale the 'slinger tells a child in the past. I'll take it though. Worth a couple of days reading.

Excellent. A wonderful book that actually fits in well with the rest of the series (which surprised me). A must for King fans and Dark Tower readers.

Wow.... I was surprised to learn this ka-tet had yay more to say. This series has long been a favorite of mine, though it felt like it ended with a confused sigh and not the punch in the face I was looking for. I like to think this portion of the book occurred after Roland's first assault on the tower and this time he's a bit wiser, and more prone to feel deeply than he once was. But, who can know.

Wind thru keyhole. This book was a great read. Having read nearly every word the author has ever written, it is a pleasure to see the evolution of his writing. Not just in the prose but the way his characters regard each other. One page into this book and it is like putting on an old pair of slippers. Swept away into the mist. That is why this constant reader will always be a loyal fan.

Master Storyteller. Like catching up with old friends it was... King has once again reunited me with the beam and reminded me of all that is important and true. Thank you sir for everything. Well met gunslinger.

AMAZING!!. Stephen King does it once again. Probably the best series I've ever read. I honestly wish we could get 8 more books!

A bit of redemption for King. I was a long time fan of King, a constant reader for years. The Dark Tower series took me right away and I still think of the haunting opening lines of The Gunslinger. But King copped out in the end, abandoning his main character, Roland, to an endless pursuit of a quest, reliving all possibilities...condemned to some weird type of literary hell. In my view, King had truly forgotten the face of his father. Wind Through the Keyhole drops the reader back into the middle of the saga and we find Roland hunkered down, telling a story to his friends. The story is great and I loved being with Roland again. This is a great read so if there are any out there like me, go for it. I can't know why King wrote this. I can only hope he regrets how he left Roland and this is his attempt at a bit of redemption.

Perhaps the most beautiful, unforgettable tale from Roland's past.... The wind through the keyhole, which seems to take up well over half the pages of this whole novel, is one perhaps the most riveting, unforgettable piece of The Gunslinger's rough, sandblasted past. Gave it five stars; beautiful story within a story.

A perfect nesting of stories!. Stories within stories and each is a gem in and of itself. This is a literary set of nested Russian dolls. As another reviewer said, Thankee sai

What’s there to say? It’s a Stephen King novel, it’s awesome :-)!. Like the title says, “It’s a Stephen King novel, it’s awesome”. Good story intertwined in the gunslinger saga.

Freaking Awesome!. Whether you read The Dark Tower series or not, this is a great story... or a great story within a great story within a story. The concept is genius. Though I'm a die hard Roland fan, I could read gunslinger-related tales all day long. Highly recommended; I'm sad I've finished it so quickly!

Great. Loved it, it Was an awesome book.

Great Book, But Not Much About Roland. This book was fun to read and had two great stories inside. Only one deals with any of the characters we know and love from the DT novels. You can certainly tell it was written by King and is in the DT universe but if you go in expecting to learn much more about Rowland, Eddie, Susan, Jake, Oy, Cuthbert, or Alain you won't find that here. There are maybe 30 pages that include the current Ka-Tet, but in between those pages it's all about Rowland telling two different stories; one about him, and a second story with all new characters. I enjoyed both stories, very much. But they were not what I expected. I guess I was expecting more of a 'Wizard & Glass' tale with Rowland and his old Ka-Tet, but this was a much smaller tale with fewer main characters. Just view this book as an independent DT tale and you won't be disappointed.

Wind through the keyhole. Not what I was hoping for. A great read nonetheless. Worth the money.

Wonderful!. A terrific read. Classic gunslinger that blends well with the other stories in the Dark Tower series. King certainly is in great form here and sprinkles his stories within stories with a great deal of humanity.

Amazing!. I am so glad he decided to write this I love this series!!

Enjoyed it. I am a late comer to the Dark Tower series. Over the last two weeks I've read all of the books in order except for this one. I wanted to read it last as it had been written, long after the conclusion of the series even though the story fits somewhere between the fourth and fifth books. It seemed to me that King was faced with two challenges, the first, reacquainting himself and new readers with the characters he created so long ago, and, second, telling a story that could stand on its own without the remainder of the series to prop it up. Master story teller that he is both challenges were smartly met. I am reminded that like in life, the destination is really nothing more than an excuse for the journey and the journey itself is all that really matters.

Great interlude. Awesome little story told within a story. One of my favorite bedtime tales told by the great Stephen King. Looking forward to the Wolves of the Calla and the conclusion to this great western series.

Like a visit from old friends. If you have read the dark tower story you will enjoy this book. I will say no more as it is more fun to just experience it.

DARK TOWER!!!. More...do it pleas ya'.

Ka is indeed a wheel. I accidentally read this last instead of in between wizard and glass and wolves of calla. It was great to see the tet whole again I hope King does another one of these.

Stories within stories within a story. These are ,y favorite kind of stories.

More!. After decades of following the Gunslingers trek, I must admit that I was truly sadden when the final book was read. This story while not as exciting as the the Dark Tower books, is still a great read! Thank you Sai King for another chance to escape into Roland's world once again. I only wish I didn't read so darn fast! Now how about another book or two about the Gunslinger?! If it do ya ! Hile Gunslinger!

The Wind Through the Keyhole. Thank you, Stephen King, for throwing us this delightful bone. We are reunited with Roland and ka-tet, a group I thought I would never see again, until such time I choose to read the septology a second time. Now, it is an octology. There are actually three tales here, all stacked together, within each other, like so many Russian dolls. We get to travel a bit with the ka-tet; we return to Roland's youth as a novice gunslinger ( if there were such a thing;) and, we here a tale of unheralded bravery and loyalty, of Tim Stoutheart, a boy not unlike Jake, who is forced to discard his boyish ways early, and must step into manhood before it's time. In typical King fashion, the characters are well developed and unique, and the pace is quick - but not too hasty. Enjoy, fellow reader, this is very much worth consuming. Hile, Mr. King.

The Wind Through the Keyhole. Having read the Dark Tower series twice, I was pleasantly surprised how this fit in! A very good read and it was fun being back with Roland and his K-Tet.

Story in a story in a story. Great addition to the dark tower series.

The wind through the keyhole. Thank you for continuing the story of Roland.

Thankee-sai. Mr. King, more than any other author, has the unique ability to pull me entirely into a story and hold me there for many long hours. Of all the amazing stories he has told, the Dark Tower saga is the one tale that has the ability to make forget all the troubles of the "real" world for a time and for that I am eternally grateful. The Wind Through The Keyhole is no exception.

More Roland... Well Done. I hated reading as a young adult, so it wasn't until I'd finished my freshman year of college, and therefore freshman English and would never again be required to read a book, that I read a book for pleasure. That first book, selected at random from a ship's library, was IT by Stephen King. Since that first pleasure reading twenty plus years ago, I've read hundreds of novels including every Stephen King book. Amongst his greatest achievements, in my opinion, is the complicated and intertwined world of Roland. Some of the connections to earlier works, written, one assumes, before The Gunslinger's world was fully formed, approach precognition, or perhaps were just luck. I've read a few fan websites that have attempted to document those connections and while impressed, feel there are even more if ones looks. It's quite remarkable and something of a treasure hunt in reverse. Amongst my favorite of his non-Gunslinger-series books which tie into the story / world are The Talisman and Eyes of the Dragon. If you enjoyed those books, I think you'll enjoy The Dark Tower: The Wind Through the Keyhole as well. King's story telling ability and character development are at their best, I think, when his protagonist is an adolescent boy on a quest. This most recent Dark Tower contribution features this prominently in a "tale within a tale within a tale" that is clever and captivating. I will qualify my praise by noting that I am not a blindly devoted King constant reader and have at times been quite annoyed by what I felt were weak characters and plot twists in several novels including some of those within The Dark Tower series. I'm not too hard on Mr. King on those occasions but I wouldn't give a positive review on every book he's written just because I'm a fan. That said, Wind Through the Keyhole is amongst his best work.

Superb. Wonderful as always.

King at his best.. What more can I say? Breezy, simple style that flows around deeper currents of meaning. It seems to me that the long short story is his "sweet spot" and this one flows.

The book. Super

Ka-tet. Great story

The Wind Through the Keyholes. Return of Roland and his Ka-tet. Not As brilliant as the GuNslinger or Wolves of the Calla, but a must read for all fans of the Dark Tower.

King ruins it with his Narration. Read the book, don't listen to the audio. Stephen king is an absolutely terrible reader. He drains all of the life from his own story with his flat and dead voice.

Excellent Tale!. It was good to visit Midworld again and journey with the Ka-tet. It was like visiting old friends, the ones that you have travelled with and hurt with. Thank you Mr. King for allowing us to follow the Path of the Beam once again! Thankee Sai!!

I will follow the path of the beam wherever it leads me... A wonderful tale crafted in the world of the moved on. It may have a certain place in the ka-tet's chronology, but to me it sits side by side with Wizard and Glass. Thank you Mr King for rekindling my love for reading.

A solid contribution. For fans of the Dark Tower story, there can’t be enough. I am one of those fans. I find it hard to step back and be critical. I love the early gunslinger stories and I’ll take them however I can get them. If you’re new to the story, you’ll find this book lacking. A Grimm horror tale (or two!) loosely embedded in some type of story structure. If you’re part of the ka-tet, then you’ll consume this book in a single sitting and wish for more. Let’s hope the well isn’t dry and there’s more to be told. There will be water if God wills it.

The Wind Through The Keyhole. I've been a fan of the Dark Tower series since the beginning. This book shadows the same type of story but falls short of being placed in the Dark Tower series. It's more of a "history" book. A good story and a good read but for the die hard Dark Tower fan? It falls short of a home run.

A great book for a stormy night. A story, within a story, within a story. Woven by a true master of his craft. It's great to join the ol Ka-tet again. An all around great revisit to one of my favorite series.

Awesome!. As always!

Very Happy. An absolute must read if you're a fan of The Dark Tower series. I hope this is the beginning of more stories of Roland's life before his quest for the Dark Tower began.

Gunslinger series. Still enjoying these tales, hope King continues to add to series this way. I think we all love the time travel element and stories of mid-world. My favorites were drawing of the three and "The Wolves of Calla"

Thank You. There is something about mid world and Roland's Ka-Tet that is a bit like coming home. Many years have passed and I am no longer young. Home is still familiar but I have changed over time. It hurts some but it is a good hurt, mostly. Roland's voice sounds different to me now, but somehow it seems even closer. I always felt the last Dark Tower books were a bit rushed, with perhaps a sense of panic. I understand why and have never blamed the author. They were good despite the pace. This book did not feel that way. It came through naturally and perfectly. A wonderful gift that was unlooked and unhoped for but ever so gratefully received. I hope the wind blows more mid world stories to us.

Well met gunslinger!. It's been a long time since I first read the dark tower, and the book and characters have stayed with me all these years. It was great to hear that the Gunslinger was back with another tale. Well written and mesmerizing. Great job Mr. King!

Wind though the keyhole. A truly enjoyable book.

Keyhole Windy!. A nice treat for fans of the series- a great tale, full of familiar characters and settings - lots of fun to visit the world of the Dark Tower once again! I'd hazard to say that newcomers might enjoy this too, more than that Directive Nineteen prevents me from saying!

Another great king book!. Great

There will be water..... It was nice to have Roland and his Ka-tet back again, if even for a short while. I hope to walk with them again someday.

Wind thru the keyhole. As always a true story teller... Bravo
