Gone Girl Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The “mercilessly entertaining” (Vanity Fair) instant classic “about the nature of identity and the terrible secrets that can survive and thrive in even the most intimate relationships” (Lev Grossman, Time).

NAMED ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Janet Maslin, The New York Times • People • Entertainment Weekly • O: The Oprah Magazine • Slate • Kansas City Star • USA Today • Christian Science Monitor

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media—as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents—the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter—but is he really a killer?

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY San Francisco Chronicle • St. Louis Post Dispatch • Chicago Tribune • HuffPost • Newsday

“Absorbing . . . In masterly fashion, Flynn depicts the unraveling of a marriage—and of a recession-hit Midwest—by interweaving the wife’s diary entries with the husband’s first-person account.”New Yorker

“Ms. Flynn writes dark suspense novels that anatomize violence without splashing barrels of blood around the pages . . . Ms. Flynn has much more up her sleeve than a simple missing-person case. As Nick and Amy alternately tell their stories, marriage has never looked so menacing, narrators so unreliable.”The Wall Street Journal

“The story unfolds in precise and riveting prose . . . even while you know you’re being manipulated, searching for the missing pieces is half the thrill of this wickedly absorbing tale.”O: The Oprah Magazine

Gone Girl - Gillian Flynn Book Reviews

  • Brilliant (Mr. Howel)

I enjoyed every minute of this book!
  • Love😍 (Terryn T)

    My favorite book!
  • Overhyped! Thrilling story, poor writing (smayflower)

I have loved reading from a very young age. I found Flynn’s style to be painfully boring to read, despite my anticipation of the dramatic story unfolding. I grew tired of trying to finish it, and I’m never one to stop reading a book before completion.
  • ALMOST MASTERPIECE (Prophet Amos)

A good book, probably the best book, she will write. It depicts Amy as a suave and sophisticated New Yorker, who is slightly anti-American, in regards to traditional values, and a little too much focus on PC for my liking, with a steady jaundiced eye towards those people, who love God and Country. An example, as Amy points out in reference to a female, whom she meets duirng her travels: “Her bookshelves were stocked with coffee-table crap: We Remember 9/11.” Also, at times, the italics duirng a conversation are not clearly evident, if the speaker is talking to themselves or out loud. It could have been a masterpiece, she missed the mark though.
  • I still hate the ending (AHS2004)

It's thrilling and shocking book with some shocking twist and turns. Although I still hate the ending.
  • Terribly Disappointing (Mae0313)

I found the writing to be extremely juvenile. Every time I put this book down I dread picking it back up. I love reading, but this book felt like such a waste of time.
  • Disturbing... yet satisfying (AliciaMarie19)

The book itself is pretty interesting and something that isn't easy to put down... but at the same time its going to tug at all your values and make you really wonder whose side you want to be on and then hate ourself for being on either side. It's pretty intense. I think that it does do a great job in illustrating the difficulties that both men and women have in respect to one another within some relationships, though both side's responses to the negative is blown waaaayyy up for the viewer's entertainment. The book is a little explicit in regards to sex and language so that is something to keep in mind before purchasing the book. Not saying that it's good or bad, just because it's one of those books that will become what you make of it.
  • Seriously? (Kesta_ann)

This is awful! Omg those diary entries from Amy! I can't finish it.
  • By Adventures with Brianne (brianne0741)

This book was a good read! It kept me on my toes throughout the whole book. There were so many things that went on in the story, and you never knew what was going to happen next. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a twisted tale, as well as someone who loves a little thriller with a little mystery. It is a twisted romance novel that makes you want to learn what happens next.
  • Worth your time (mercart)

Very well written. I love Gillian Flynn's figurative language. The characters were multidimensional and realistic. Definitely not overhyped. I avoided it for a long time just because it's so popular, but I liked it way more than I expected.

Unbelievably overrated. I read this book a few months ago and I'm still not over the fact that I actually paid to read such trash. I found it to be very slow moving at times, but I forced myself to keep reading because I wanted to know how it ended. Wow, did I waste my time. The ending is so utterly ridiculous and unsatisfying, I sat there just staring at the last page thinking, "Did I really just spend all that time reading this for THAT??" I don't know how this book got so much praise but it was definitely not deserved. I now steer clear of any book that says its like Gone Girl because I'm afraid of wasting my money and time again.

Bad ending. I never read this type of book but because it had great reviews, and the movie is soon to be released I would give it a try.read book in 2 days, was enjoying it,stayed up most of the night. It's now 5 am and I finely get to the ending- nothing! The writer fell a sleep! It seemed the book lost all it's momentum ,Instead of the "Big bang" ending ,the writer led me to expect ,it ended with a very few lines and a wimper. Very disappointed!

Gave it a shot.. Considering how many good reviews there were on this book, I thought it would be written much smoother and that the ending wouldn't be a big disappointment. However, I give Flynn credit for the very idea of the book, which I felt was intriguing, had it been developed better. My main problems with this book is that it took so long to lead up to... Absolutely nothing great. You could consider it a thriller, and at some parts it truly is, but during the second half of the book I only kept reading to see if it would end like I expected it to. It didn't. However, reading a few reviews before I wrote this one, I see many people share my opinion on the ending. It was rushed. I really didn't expect Flynn to spend such a long time developing the story in the beginning, to a little less time creating the mediocre middle, and to almost no time on the poor end. I recognize that most books written take effort and thought, which is why this is still three stars for me. Honestly, I thought it was so good in the early chapters, especially in the Boy Loses Girl part, that I just waited for the intense story development past that, but it never came. Final jurisdiction: Read Gone Girl for the story and the thoughts that swirl in your mind while doing so, but do not hope for an "excellent read" or a decent ending. It is not a difficult read, and is neither a mystery of thriller in the eyes of this 15 year old. Have a good day!

Gone Girl. This type of drivel does nothing but wizz me off. If people (particularly men), in real life, are this wimpy, our world is coming to an end. For the love of God -- someone made this crap into a movie! Really?! I wasted several hours of my life reading this trash and it has really wizzed me off.

Went Wench. How this movie ever made it to the big screen or garners 4 stars, I'll never know. My dog has a better understanding of love. These characters fall in and out of love at any given hour. "Oh, he's wearing the tie I gave him. I'm in love all over again." The writer must have some strange OCD issue with how people smell. Really, you can smell vaginas and what people had for lunch without rolling all over them? No likable characters. No real believability, even within the realm of written fiction. The ending leaves you as flat and cold as an orgasm that just wouldn't happen. Blek!

Couldn't put this one down. Great, creative, intense, believable, ironic, unbelievable writing twisted into a fabulous page turner of "who's on first". I started reading on Tuesday, and by Saturday afternoon, I had finished. This was all around my other household and mother/grandmother duties. I simply could NOT stop reading, because I was so entrenched into each character. I could picture each of them as if they were in my own bedroom; not on my iPad. I kept thinking I had figured the plot out, and the next chapter I was wrong again. Several nights I would wake up and rewind the story in my head to make sure I didn't miss a clue. I had part of the ending correct; but nowhere to the extent of its actuality. Looking forward to many more like this from a fellow Chicagoan.

GREAT ... Until the ending :-(. A litte predictable but still great twists and turns. I give it 3 for most of the book for keeping me on the edge of my seat. But the ending is a -1! I was SO disappointed it just kinda fizzled out. Why the author ended it so ... blah? ... meh? - just what I thought when I got there - beats the heck outta me!!!
