Gone Girl

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The “mercilessly entertaining” (Vanity Fair) instant classic “about the nature of identity and the terrible secrets that can survive and thrive in even the most intimate relationships” (Lev Grossman, Time).

NAMED ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Janet Maslin, The New York Times • People • Entertainment Weekly • O: The Oprah Magazine • Slate • Kansas City Star • USA Today • Christian Science Monitor

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media—as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents—the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter—but is he really a killer?

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY San Francisco Chronicle • St. Louis Post Dispatch • Chicago Tribune • HuffPost • Newsday

“Absorbing . . . In masterly fashion, Flynn depicts the unraveling of a marriage—and of a recession-hit Midwest—by interweaving the wife’s diary entries with the husband’s first-person account.”New Yorker

“Ms. Flynn writes dark suspense novels that anatomize violence without splashing barrels of blood around the pages . . . Ms. Flynn has much more up her sleeve than a simple missing-person case. As Nick and Amy alternately tell their stories, marriage has never looked so menacing, narrators so unreliable.”The Wall Street Journal

“The story unfolds in precise and riveting prose . . . even while you know you’re being manipulated, searching for the missing pieces is half the thrill of this wickedly absorbing tale.”O: The Oprah Magazine

- Don’t waste your time1 star

I have enjoyed other books by this author, but this one was awful. The story began normal and interesting, then morphed into something ridiculous and unbelievable, with the main characters being people who couldn’t exist. Unless, I guess, if people don’t have anything even resembling a normal relationship. For the rest of their lives.

- Easy read5 star

Another great book!

I want to throw this book out of the window

- Love her books!!5 star

- Phenomenal5 star

I have never written a review before. This is my first and it’s because the book was so astounding. This book has so many twists and turns and the author weaves you through them flawlessly and guides you to what she wants you to feel at that point in the book. You hate a character until you don’t, you love others and she plays with the antagonist and protagonist roles in a way I have never seen done before. They are fluid. Highly recommend to anyone that likes a page turner. My only critique is that I felt empty at the very end. Left wanting more. Or a different ending. But the author earned the right throughout this masterpiece to end it anyway she pleased and while it wasn’t the ending I hoped for it was true to the story. I hope this helps., if you are reading my review. If you are undecided please let me help you. Read this book.

- Brilliant5 star

I enjoyed every minute of this book!

- Love😍5 star

My favorite book!

- Overhyped! Thrilling story, poor writing2 star

I have loved reading from a very young age. I found Flynn’s style to be painfully boring to read, despite my anticipation of the dramatic story unfolding. I grew tired of trying to finish it, and I’m never one to stop reading a book before completion.

A good book, probably the best book, she will write. It depicts Amy as a suave and sophisticated New Yorker, who is slightly anti-American, in regards to traditional values, and a little too much focus on PC for my liking, with a steady jaundiced eye towards those people, who love God and Country. An example, as Amy points out in reference to a female, whom she meets duirng her travels: “Her bookshelves were stocked with coffee-table crap: We Remember 9/11.” Also, at times, the italics duirng a conversation are not clearly evident, if the speaker is talking to themselves or out loud. It could have been a masterpiece, she missed the mark though.

- I still hate the ending4 star

It's thrilling and shocking book with some shocking twist and turns. Although I still hate the ending.

- Terribly Disappointing1 star

I found the writing to be extremely juvenile. Every time I put this book down I dread picking it back up. I love reading, but this book felt like such a waste of time.

- Disturbing... yet satisfying4 star

The book itself is pretty interesting and something that isn't easy to put down... but at the same time its going to tug at all your values and make you really wonder whose side you want to be on and then hate ourself for being on either side. It's pretty intense. I think that it does do a great job in illustrating the difficulties that both men and women have in respect to one another within some relationships, though both side's responses to the negative is blown waaaayyy up for the viewer's entertainment. The book is a little explicit in regards to sex and language so that is something to keep in mind before purchasing the book. Not saying that it's good or bad, just because it's one of those books that will become what you make of it.

- Seriously?1 star

This is awful! Omg those diary entries from Amy! I can't finish it.

- By Adventures with Brianne5 star

This book was a good read! It kept me on my toes throughout the whole book. There were so many things that went on in the story, and you never knew what was going to happen next. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a twisted tale, as well as someone who loves a little thriller with a little mystery. It is a twisted romance novel that makes you want to learn what happens next.

- Worth your time4 star

Very well written. I love Gillian Flynn's figurative language. The characters were multidimensional and realistic. Definitely not overhyped. I avoided it for a long time just because it's so popular, but I liked it way more than I expected.

- The movie is actually better than the book -1 star

I'm an avid reader, and always watch movies of books I enjoyed. Reading is always more in depth, detailed, interesting than the movie. *Not in this case* 1st chapter of the Grapes of Wrath about the turtle crossing the dirt road kind of detail. BORING! The shallow and uninteresting characters drag on and on. The movie is cheaper to rent and far more entertaining than this horrid read.

- melodiousmichael1 star

Hard to believe this book was a bestseller. Boring story, unlikable characters and poorly written. I will never read a book by this author again.

- Great book!4 star

Awesome, easy read. For adults, but you must be pretty open minded to read the book.

- AWESOME!5 star

I have never read a book with so many unbelievable twists and turns. Just when you imagine the outcome, you are headed in another direction. I couldn't put this book down, and I am recommending it to others.

- Good read5 star

Despite the bad reviews, I really enjoyed this. The ending wasn't the best, I can agree with that. I feel like the ending suits the characters and the situation well. I would recommend.

- Horrible ending2 star

I actually enjoyed the book, but the ending was horrible.

- Interesting but unexpected ending4 star

It's kind of a story that has unexpected ending.

- Amazing5 star

Amazing...just like all of Gillian Flynn's work.

- Disappointed with the ending3 star

The book was pretty good and it was a page turner throughout the book but I do not appreciate the way it ended. I feel like there was a lot put into the book for the author to end it as it did.

- Torturous, all but 10 pages1 star

To say the first half was slow, would be an understatement. Saying "I just didn't care for this novel" would be a bald-faced lie. It was as though the first and second halves were written by completely different people. The first half was akin to wading through molasses carrying a 50 lb. nap sack against 70 mph wind. However, giving up would've left me forever wondering if I'd missed the best part of the story. You know what? There wasn't one. I'd like to have the wasted hours added back to my life on Earth -- or at least a mind eraser to help me forget about these self-indulgent sociopaths forever.

- Clever, but exhausting3 star

Well, overall its a fun read, very well written with some razor sharp observations and clever phrasing. Gillian Flynn is obviously very talented. But...the story is so deeply cynical and amazingly profane. I'm certainly no prude but there were more F-bombs and C-words here than several Scorcesse films combined . And as I neared the end, I was ready for it all to be over. The two lead characters are so despicable, and I was tired of being their heads. I just wanted to take a gun and shoot them both to put them (and myself) out of misery

- Just amazing5 star

Amazing! My favorite book!

- Horrible1 star

Horrible ending

- Great Book, Disappointing Ending5 star

It was totally worth the hype! I finished reading this book in about two days and up until the reveal I couldn’t figure out what happened to Amy. I thought this book was better than The Girl on the Train (which I read before this) and was a little more twisted. He really thought of everything in this story. The only thing I really didn’t like about the book was the ending…I was SO disappointed.

- Disappointing ending2 star

I really liked the premise of this book and it was a nice read, but the ending was terrible! What are the readers supposed to think when the person that the author makes us hate ends up triumphing? Blech.

- Ok read3 star

Not worth all the hype

- Frustrating2 star

I read thrillers for entertainment. And this book had it until the end. I hated how this book was ended. I guess I was really not supposed to be entertained. I was supposed to "feel" like being entertained until I find out I am not. Was a waste reading it. I will give the author credit for her writing style, it was unique. But seriously, I don't read so I can give my opinion about society and politics stuff and what not. Kinda disappointed.

- Gone girl4 star

The book was great, excellent writing . The ending was meh... still a fantastic read though !

- Mesmerizing5 star

I can’t begin to explain how much I love this book. I started reading this with my boyfriend, and we were hooked from the first page. Such a page turner, and infinitely better than the movie. Must read!

- GOONE GIRRL!!!5 star

It was a well written book😊. It will keep u going and attach till the end because for every page, the author has done a great job. Its full of twist till from the very last page. Amy and Nick are very unique characters but touches true stories of women and men. It also tackles how justice become unjust by how Nick portrays the character. Overall its an awesome novel, which for every dollar spend to buy this book is all worth it😊

- Amazing5 star

This book leaves you wanting more!

- Awesome book5 star

It was awesome book I loved it good job

- Great but3 star

Great read with lots of twists. Right up to the last page. Crappy, lazy ending.

- Page turner but...4 star

This book was a great read however the ending was a real disappointment. It was like s Gillian said "ok need to wrap this up, let's end it here" This was the first of Gillian's books I have read.

- reminds me of my first wife who suffered from multiple personality disorder. Very scary5 star

gilliian nails it, well done, have to see the movie now for sure

- Maybe if there is a part two the author can get it right1 star

I started this book after reading the reviews, almost all said the beginning was boring and the ending "iffy" but good in the middle. I found the whole book boring, it's a mash of a couple of movies and a CNN show. I was never surprised by any "twist" or "turn" all very predictable. It read like an authors first novel, desperately trying to fool the reader. The ending was so unbelievable it was almost comical. As if anyone gets away with what these people in this book did. Some characters were a waste of space not really adding to the story like the father of one of the main characters. Perhaps the movie will be better than the book the opposite of what usually is. And the author will do a part two and get it right the second time around. I would not recommend this book.

- Couldn't put it down!5 star

I really enjoyed this book. My favourite read this year by far! I loved the 2 sided narrative, kept the pages turning so I could find out what happens next. I'm still a bit bothered by the ending, I expected more out of the character I thought I knew. But still didn't see it coming so the ending was unique I guess. I highly recommend this book!

- Good read2 star

This is my first Flynn book. It was good. But not great. There were at times a very suspenseful read. It took 3 attempts to start the book. I have never read a book with such a poor ending. Very dissatisfying.

- Ugh3 star

Seriously such a disappointing ending!! Started off slow, then hooked me and I couldn't put it down, then such a dull ending. Ruined a good book

- A good Read5 star

A very exciting, page turning book. Ending may be a bit disappointing

- Offensive2 star

I found the story line fairly interesting after the first half but all I found all the offensive language quite disgusting. I don't think it added a thing to the book and I will never read another book from this writer if you can call this writing.

- Gone Girl a GREAT READ5 star

I honestly did not know what to expect when I downloaded this book. I was prepared to be disappointed and to be truthful expected not to like it. Started reading just after I got on the plane for a 10 hour flight. Finished before I landed. This is an excellent read, well developed characters well paced and well worth the read. Money well spent

- One Ending I Wouldn't Mind The Movies Changing4 star

I downloaded this book after seeing a few posters for it on the subway. I hadn't really heard much about it other then they were making it into a movie. The first half of the book is really great. It's told in two parts: one being present time with the husband and the second part being from the diary of the wife. It's really interesting to see the two characters in the light they see themselves vs. the light that their partner sheds. The second half of the book is where is starts to taper off. I really felt like it was kind of just thrown together, not really thought through with the same detail that the beginning had. If it wasn't for the first half I would have rated this book 3 stars.

- Ending4 star

Great book, just wish it had a better ending :(

- Amazing!5 star

This was honestly just a great book from start to finish. I could not put it down! It was a great read and I would recommend it to anyone! Fantastic!

- Not impress2 star

Thought it would be a fantastic read. I had to force myself through it just to be completely disappointed in the ending

- Gone girl2 star

Forced myself to read the whole thing and that's all I'll say

- Meh...3 star

The storeyline was good, the end seemed rushed. I was disappointed by the ending it could have been so much more!

- Fantastic!5 star

Knew it had great reviews but wasn't expecting it to be this good..loved the twist !!

- Not what I thought it would be5 star

This book was a great read! Loved the two-sided story of husband and wife. The twist was unexpected. Can't wait to read more of this authors books.

- Gone Girl2 star

I enjoyed this book right up until the end...but what a disappointment....it was as if the author had wanted to get the book over with quickly.

- Loved it5 star

I could not put this book down. I have no idea how anyone could have felt any differently! Flynn is a witty and brilliant writer. Loved her style.

- Great read4 star

I really liked this book. It goes back and forth between narrators so you get the whole story. Enjoyable murder mystery novel

- Gone Girl3 star

I started and finished four different books while I was trying to complete this book. as another reviewer noted the start of this book was hard to slog through. Once I made it through a very boring start, I started to get pulled into the story. It was different, and once finished I enjoyed it.

- Loved it5 star

Literally could not stop reading! The ending was a bit of a let down but over all two thumbs up!

- Brilliant5 star

I read this book before the movie came out and loved it. All the other reviews complaining about the ending just don't get the point, it's supposed to be in satisfying, and rushed. Kind of like life can feel that way. Brilliant, kept me drawn in, Gillian Flynn is a genius.

- Sicko wrote this book1 star

The twist and turns made it readable but overall this was written by one very warped minded man-hating woman. The last couple of chapters and the ending made it a total waste of time to read. Not worth even seeing the movie until it gets on TV only if screenplay is better than book.

- Great5 star

I was one of those who watched the movie first and read the book. I think it's great yea the ending was a little weak but I absolutely fell in love with all the characters!

- Uahhh. What To Say3 star

It's very hard to like this book. It is very well written (ending not unexpected but still unconvincing). If you know someone with a personality disorder you will be uncomfortable with amazing Amy. The author has that part down to a "T". The main characters are bad man and worse wife. Antihero is too mild. Sad twisted feminism. What have we come to?

- A really good read4 star

I didn't know quite what to expect, but I thoroughly enjoyed Gone Girl. The style of writing is very different, but fit well with the twists and turns of the story. It was also easy to relate to some of the characters. I will now have to try some of the author's other titles, and see the movie.

- Unbelievably overrated1 star

I read this book a few months ago and I'm still not over the fact that I actually paid to read such trash. I found it to be very slow moving at times, but I forced myself to keep reading because I wanted to know how it ended. Wow, did I waste my time. The ending is so utterly ridiculous and unsatisfying, I sat there just staring at the last page thinking, "Did I really just spend all that time reading this for THAT??" I don't know how this book got so much praise but it was definitely not deserved. I now steer clear of any book that says its like Gone Girl because I'm afraid of wasting my money and time again.

- Bad ending1 star

I never read this type of book but because it had great reviews, and the movie is soon to be released I would give it a try.read book in 2 days, was enjoying it,stayed up most of the night. It's now 5 am and I finely get to the ending- nothing! The writer fell a sleep! It seemed the book lost all it's momentum ,Instead of the "Big bang" ending ,the writer led me to expect ,it ended with a very few lines and a wimper. Very disappointed!

- Horrible ending1 star

It was a good read until the disappointing ending.

- Great read!5 star

Definitely a good book! Could not put it down!

- Gave it a shot.3 star

Considering how many good reviews there were on this book, I thought it would be written much smoother and that the ending wouldn't be a big disappointment. However, I give Flynn credit for the very idea of the book, which I felt was intriguing, had it been developed better. My main problems with this book is that it took so long to lead up to... Absolutely nothing great. You could consider it a thriller, and at some parts it truly is, but during the second half of the book I only kept reading to see if it would end like I expected it to. It didn't. However, reading a few reviews before I wrote this one, I see many people share my opinion on the ending. It was rushed. I really didn't expect Flynn to spend such a long time developing the story in the beginning, to a little less time creating the mediocre middle, and to almost no time on the poor end. I recognize that most books written take effort and thought, which is why this is still three stars for me. Honestly, I thought it was so good in the early chapters, especially in the Boy Loses Girl part, that I just waited for the intense story development past that, but it never came. Final jurisdiction: Read Gone Girl for the story and the thoughts that swirl in your mind while doing so, but do not hope for an "excellent read" or a decent ending. It is not a difficult read, and is neither a mystery of thriller in the eyes of this 15 year old. Have a good day!

- REALLY!!!1 star

To unbelievable to make sense!!

- Gone Girl2 star

This type of drivel does nothing but wizz me off. If people (particularly men), in real life, are this wimpy, our world is coming to an end. For the love of God -- someone made this crap into a movie! Really?! I wasted several hours of my life reading this trash and it has really wizzed me off.

- Went Wench1 star

How this movie ever made it to the big screen or garners 4 stars, I'll never know. My dog has a better understanding of love. These characters fall in and out of love at any given hour. "Oh, he's wearing the tie I gave him. I'm in love all over again." The writer must have some strange OCD issue with how people smell. Really, you can smell vaginas and what people had for lunch without rolling all over them? No likable characters. No real believability, even within the realm of written fiction. The ending leaves you as flat and cold as an orgasm that just wouldn't happen. Blek!

- Couldn't put this one down5 star

Great, creative, intense, believable, ironic, unbelievable writing twisted into a fabulous page turner of "who's on first". I started reading on Tuesday, and by Saturday afternoon, I had finished. This was all around my other household and mother/grandmother duties. I simply could NOT stop reading, because I was so entrenched into each character. I could picture each of them as if they were in my own bedroom; not on my iPad. I kept thinking I had figured the plot out, and the next chapter I was wrong again. Several nights I would wake up and rewind the story in my head to make sure I didn't miss a clue. I had part of the ending correct; but nowhere to the extent of its actuality. Looking forward to many more like this from a fellow Chicagoan.

- GREAT ... Until the ending :-(3 star

A litte predictable but still great twists and turns. I give it 3 for most of the book for keeping me on the edge of my seat. But the ending is a -1! I was SO disappointed it just kinda fizzled out. Why the author ended it so ... blah? ... meh? - just what I thought when I got there - beats the heck outta me!!!

- Gone Girl5 star

Wonderful read, I recommend it to anyone and everyone. Well written and I was intrigued the entire book. Don't let anyone tell you what happens! Go into the book knowing nothing! You will be happy you did! Great read!

- Save Yourself Some Grief!1 star

If aggravation is unwelcome in your life, save yourself some grief and pick another book to read! Oh sure, at first I was sucked into the plot (and I like a good plot twist as much as the next person). With that said, stories should have some degree of credibility or believability...this story had neither. Skip it and reread "50 Shades of Grey". No, it's no better written or more believable, but at least it's entertaining. Hated this book!

- Horrible Ending3 star

The book was okay. It did have some twists and turns and wasn't predictable. But the ending was horrible! That's all I will say. I watched the movie this past weekend, it was even worse!

- The Best Yet5 star

I’ll tell you now. I am not a big book reader. But when I do read books, I choose the ones that are usually very popular. This is probably one of the best books I’ve ever read. The suspense along with the misleading narration and symbolism. Everything blends together to create a something that makes you want to keep reading it on and on. I was so into the book, I read it only in a few days. It was just that appealing to me.

- Readable and entertaining.3 star

No great literature here....could have been an amazing book in more capable hands. That said, it was quite readable and kept me entertained 'til the end. Interesting dichotomy to despise and root for the protagonists at the same time, even when they are in conflict with each other. MUCH better and different than her earlier, dreadful, books.

- Great book!5 star

I could not put this one down. Not every story can have a happy ending and the twist is what makes it great! Highly recommend.

- "Wasted days and wasted nights"3 star

The worst ending ever. I'm so glad that I didn't pay to see the movie!

- Not impressed2 star

Eh. Not sure what the hype was about. Took 200 pages to get interesting. By the time I became interested, the book "ended." I suppose the apparent ending is the beginning of book 2. It's sufficient enough to satisfy the need to read a thriller.

- Couldn't put this book down!!!5 star

This was such a great read! Very thrilling with many twists and turns!!!! Can't wait to watch the movie

- Huh?2 star

Awesome book, AWFUL ending. All that buildup & suspense & completely anticlimactic! An actual ending would've been nice. All of a sudden I was at the acknowledgment, confused & disappointed. Would've rated it a 5 star book until I reached the "end".

- Not what I thought1 star

I read great reviews on this book. So many people said they loved it and it took turns you never expected. But I picked out the ending as soon as it started. I honestly wish I could give this book 0 stars. The beginning is good. The middle drags a bit. And the ending is dismal. Absolutely awful!

- Too many twists4 star

I was bored stiff until two-thirds into the book. Then it got very interesting, with twist after turn after twist again and again. Kept me guessing but also kept my interest. Not crazy about the ending, but if was ok. Actually, now I'd like to read it again, knowing what I know!😄

- Well written, lousy ending3 star

The rare book that is so snappily written that I had to like it while I couldn't stand either character. In the end I rooted for Boney the cop. The ending was unsatisfying, on a bunch of levels. No one got his or her due and a child was brought into the mix! I'm sure there are those wou would say that the ending was the genius of the sociopathic character. I like justice the old fashioned way.

- Gone Girl4 star

The book had some twists and turns that were unexpected, I thought so anyway. Would I reread it? No.

- Obsessed5 star

I finished this book in one night. It had me hooked from the beginning. There many different twists throughout the story, and it always had me wondering what was going to happen next. It's very addicting and definitely one of the best books I've ever read!!
