Gone Girl Book Summary

THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media—as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents—the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter—but is he really a killer?

Gone Girl - Gillian Flynn Reviews

  • 4.5 stars - THAT ENDING!

Long story short, I borrowed this book from my co-worker and I devoured it as quickly as I could. Way too many late nights were spent reading this book. But it was so worth it. So, if you’ve been living under a rock (as I was) and don’t really know what this book is about, except that it’s absolutely mind-blowing, then I’ll just tell you this: Nick’s wife Amy disappears. He’s the prime suspect. But did he do it? Did he? This book is literally mind-blowing. I was constantly texting my co-worker with each new theory I had for what happened to Amy. I can’t even count the number of times I changed my mind. And the actual ending? Yep, mind-blowing. Like… WHAT? Did that seriously happen? This review is not going to contain spoilers so, I mean, I literally can’t say much else. I will say this though, this book was amazing. Truly amazing. And this is coming from someone who really doesn’t enjoy reading “grown up” books. The only reason I knocked half a star off was because the beginning was a little slow and because of the ending. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the ending, but I feel like it went on a little too long. I feel like the author gave the reader too much of an ending, if that makes sense.

I found the writing to be extremely juvenile. Every time I put this book down I dread picking it back up. I love reading, but this book felt like such a waste of time.
  • Disturbing... yet satisfying

The book itself is pretty interesting and something that isn't easy to put down... but at the same time its going to tug at all your values and make you really wonder whose side you want to be on and then hate ourself for being on either side. It's pretty intense. I think that it does do a great job in illustrating the difficulties that both men and women have in respect to one another within some relationships, though both side's responses to the negative is blown waaaayyy up for the viewer's entertainment. The book is a little explicit in regards to sex and language so that is something to keep in mind before purchasing the book. Not saying that it's good or bad, just because it's one of those books that will become what you make of it.

This book was a good read! It kept me on my toes throughout the whole book. There were so many things that went on in the story, and you never knew what was going to happen next. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a twisted tale, as well as someone who loves a little thriller with a little mystery. It is a twisted romance novel that makes you want to learn what happens next.

Very well written. I love Gillian Flynn's figurative language. The characters were multidimensional and realistic. Definitely not overhyped. I avoided it for a long time just because it's so popular, but I liked it way more than I expected.
  • The movie is actually better than the book -

I'm an avid reader, and always watch movies of books I enjoyed. Reading is always more in depth, detailed, interesting than the movie. *Not in this case* 1st chapter of the Grapes of Wrath about the turtle crossing the dirt road kind of detail. BORING! The shallow and uninteresting characters drag on and on. The movie is cheaper to rent and far more entertaining than this horrid read.

Hard to believe this book was a bestseller. Boring story, unlikable characters and poorly written. I will never read a book by this author again.

Awesome, easy read. For adults, but you must be pretty open minded to read the book.

I have never read a book with so many unbelievable twists and turns. Just when you imagine the outcome, you are headed in another direction. I couldn't put this book down, and I am recommending it to others.
