Wool 1 - Wool by Hugh Howey Book Summary

Thousands of them have lived underground. They've lived there so long, there are only legends about people living anywhere else. Such a life requires rules. Strict rules. There are things that must not be discussed. Like going outside. Never mention you might like going outside.

Or you'll get what you wish for.

So bad. One of the worst pieces of writing I’ve ever read.

Isaac Asimov meets O. Henry. By far the best science fiction writing I have had the pleasure to read in many years. Hugh Howey is a truly gifted writer capable of crafting such vivid descriptions of such a unique setting that his readers are at home in this mysterious silo within the first few pages. Furthermore, his skillful character development in such a compact work is truly impressive. I found myself helplessly emotionally invested in the Sheriff's plight to the very end. Two days later and I just finished the 4th installment. Each one just as captivating as the first. I have a feeling Hugh Howey is going to be a very familiar name someday soon.

Great!. Couldn't ask for a better way to spend .99¢ and half an hour. Great little story!

Amazing. Read it. You won't regret it.

Deflated. I liked the story until I read the last chapter. What felt like a fresh Brave New World narrative for the eBook generation, just ended flat for me. There are sequels, not sure why I would want to read more of what originally seemed to be an interesting story only to endure another buzzkill ending.

loves it. found it via silo and loved every page

Not a good value. Only 45 pages long

Well written but…. This book is well written and the characters are interesting. But I really resent it when a book ends on a cliffhanger to force you to buy the sequel.

Sucked right in!. This first book is so good that i started reading the second one almost a little saddened by the change of events with the way the first one ended. But that fell away as soon as I was entranced by the characters of the second one (who I started out disliking and then loved), then got pulled through the third and riveted by the fourth and fifth. And things just get plain crazy in the fifth! I just read all of the books- What a wonderful roller coaster this has been. Truly great and unexpected writing inside a unique story. Characters are built up so strongly to make you become attached to them so that the tiniest arrows being thrown at them feel like bullets hitting you. Their home is described in such a natural manner, woven into the story, that you feel like you know it inside and out. It just occurred to me that I need to post this review for the first book. I bought the first one on a whim- not realizing there is an omnibus version- but bought them all in sequence and read it in a week and a half. I've had some very enjoyable subway commutes as a result! Full of characters you will love, characters you'll hate, characters that are misguided and you'll scream "no!" at, bad guys who seem sane, good guys whose intentions you begin to question... All in a post apocalyptic candy shell!

Good but short. The writing is good and story engaging, but the book ends just as you think you're getting to the end of the introduction. It's like if Star Trek II ended with Kahn putting the mind control bug in Checkov's ear.

Holy cr*p this was good. I said what I said

Dystopian short story. I liked it. Short, suspenseful, twisted.

iTunes is the only Problem. I thought that I’d be able to continue the Silo series using the Books app but this is only the 1st of 5 books that make up the Wool Omnibus. The rest of the books aren’t available in English so I’m going to have to get it separately. iTunes removed the entire series from the store, most likely because Hugh Howey is now publishing privately since Apple gouges their Ebook authors. The story is great, but the access to the complete story is not.

baton rouge reader. Really good. Enjoyed. Like Hunger Games, it has a somewhat teen age girl romance flavor at times that has to be endured. Good book but could have been even better.

Fast but fun read.. Did not know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised by the end.

Best series ever!. Just finished all five books and I loved every moment. I'm looking into your other books right now because I'm hooked. Great job!

Scary, but amazing. The writing was great, and the story left me gasping for more!

Wow. Hugh Howey is an artist with words. His ability to evoke images in unmatched by any other author I've read. His characters are well-developed and complex, and you really care about what happens to them. His pacing is excellent. This novella is an amazing story that will stay with you.

Like the writer's style!. I'll be checking out more of his work!

Twists + turn = a great read. I am the reader who can usually guess what is going to happen next. It ruins many a book (and movie) for me. This book kept me turning page after page... Not knowing what was going to happen next. Even when I thought I knew where the story was going I was pleasantly surprised to find I was often wrong. I had a hard time putting this book down. I can't wait to read more from This author!

Excellent Story: Fun and stimulating!. Must Read and watch the 10 part series in APPLE TV! Well Done!!!

Amazed and entranced. Completely fell in love with series. Will read it again, plus anything else by this author I can get my hands on!

Great series!. I couldn't put this book down. Ended up buying the omnibus edition to finish the series.

Wow!. Just reading Hugh howey's website has been inspirational enough but frankly after reading wool volume one I feel it! The guy is amazing and this little ebook novella is quite simply gripping! Every bit of it consumes you from start to finish.

Wooly cow!. That was an amazing book. Great visual descriptives with solid characters partnered with an intriguing story make for a highly enjoyable read. The foreshadowing was amongst the most rewarding I've ever taken in. Admittedly, I wish Howey stayed the course with the quick pace of the latter third of the book but nonetheless, great book. Looking forward to Shift and Dust.

3/5. Interesting concept but a very short read. I dislike how the end was like several plot twists going back on each other and it left me feeling like the story didn’t know what “lesson” it was teaching. I really like this universe and would be interested in finding out more about the history

Excellent. Great story. I couldn't put it down and read the whole story in one sitting; it only took a couple of hours. Must buy!

Addicting. Once you start reading this series, it will pull you in. After every chapter I had to know what happens next! Amazing story line, original, dark, action-packed, thrill ride!

Best series ever. The Wool series is as good as any other piece of fiction. Really outstanding. This first one comes off a little slow, but it's necessary to set the tone for the awesomeness of the overall series. These are an absolute must read!

A real page turner. A most excellent read! Make sure you read all 3 trilogies!

Wool---sample. looking for the whole book on my I-pad?. Good!!

An engaging read for an unbelievable price. Hugh Howey proves himself to be a wonderful storyteller, spinning a web that will trap from the very first pages. Just when you think you've solved it, another twist keeps you turning the pages. The later books tell another story, letting you think you know what's going on. Truly one of my favourite series of all time and deserving of much higher recognition than just my own.
