Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear Book Summary

Lady Rowan Compton first met Maisie when, at thirteen, she went into service as a maid at her ladyship’s Belgravia mansion. A suffragette, Lady Rowan took the remarkably smart youngster under her wing and became her patron. She encouraged Maisie to study at Cambridge, and was aided in this by Maurice Blanche, a friend often retained as an investigator by the elite of Europe when discretion and results were required. It was he who first recognized Maisie’s intuitive gifts.

The outbreak of war changed everything. Maisie left for France to train as a nurse, then served at the front, where she fell in love with a handsome young doctor.

After the Armistice, in the spring of 1929, Maisie hangs out her shingle: M. Dobbs, Trade and Personal Investigations. Her very first case involves suspected infidelity but turns up something else, a tombstone with only a first name—Vincent. And then she finds another. The deceased had lived on a cooperative farm called The Retreat, a well-regarded convalescent refuge for those grievously wounded in the war, ex-soldiers too shattered to resume normal life. When Lady Rowan’s son makes plans to join the reclusive community, Maisie hurriedly investigates and finds a disturbing mystery at its core whose resolution gives her the courage to confront the ghost that has haunted her for ten years.

I loved this Novel.... This is how writing should be. I loved every page and was glued to it's every scene. The climax-be patient-does interestingly come at the end of the novel like most mysteries. Refreshing to read a novel that had withdrawn the sex and swearing. Finally! But was just pure unadulterated fun! A must read.

Maisie Dobbs. Lovely book. Well written and easy going. Easy to enjoy characters and their lifestyle. Interesting mystery. Very happy that this is a series....look forward to more Maisie Dobbs.

Maisie Dodd series. I highly recommend every book in the series.

Maisie Dobbs. I enjoyed this book. I had just finished watching Downton Abbey series and was glad to travel back into that era. Very enjoyable indeed!

Book. Great book looking forward to the rest of the series.

Wonderful book to read. Delightful! It is one of those books you can’t wait to share with fellow readers.

Great character, great setting. This is a really good detective story with a great personal history set against the background of world war one and the decade after. It is refreshing to read about good old fashioned police investigations that do not involve Internet searches and hacking into secret accounts or satellite surveillance...

Maisie Dobbs. Very good book but fell flat in the end with no exploration of how she felt seeing her old flame disfigured and frozen in time. No grief no shock no nothing. Very disappointing resolution.

Great first in a series novel. I truly enjoyed this book, there were a few nights that I stayed up late just to read a few more chapters. The characters are likable and the story is interesting. The plot is relatable even though the story is set in the 1920s as it deals with war veterans and their ability to reintegrate in society after the war. I will be reading more of this series.

Maudie Dobbs. Great read with historical insights

Maisie Dobbs. Perfect balance of history, mystery & romance.

Maisie Dobbs. Besides the engaging story of a bright English girl getting an education and changing her social standing in England, Maisie is a WWI nurse in France, and I learned so much about the war and it aftermath. Maisie Dobbs, becomes a private investigator extraordinaire. She uses facts and intuition to solve complicated cases, I really couldn’t put this book down… even reading in the early morning hours! I look forward to the other books in this series.

An avid reader. Enjoyed getting to know the characters - and enjoyed the flow of the story even with the different timelines. Looking forward to more of Maisie.

Maisie Dobbs. Compelling in its finish. The Great War romanticized, yet reflected with compassionate intuitiveness. Yes, I'll read #2…and on and on. A five star read! "Let's get on with it."

Maisie Dobbs. Great read!! Looking forward to the next one in the series.
