The Song of Achilles (Enhanced Edition) (Enhanced Edition) by Madeline Miller Book Summary
Enter the world of Homer's ancient Greece with the enhanced e-book edition of The Song of Achilles. This edition lets you further engage with this compelling story through video interviews with Madeline Miller and Gregory Maguire, bestselling author of the Wicked series, clips from the audio book at the start of each chapter, an illustrated map, and a pop-up gallery featuring over 40 images and descriptions of the characters, armor, and ships found in the book.
The legend begins...
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. "The best of all the Greeks"—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles' mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.
When word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, the men of Greece, bound by blood and oath, must lay siege to Troy in her name. Seduced by the promise of a glorious destiny, Achilles joins their cause, and torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus follows. Little do they know that the Fates will test them both as never before and demand a terrible sacrifice.
Built on the groundwork of the Iliad, Madeline Miller's page-turning, profoundly moving, and blisteringly paced retelling of the epic Trojan War marks the launch of a dazzling career.

Not My Cup of Tea. I can understand why this book is so popular amongst a majority of readers, but I realized less than halfway through that it was simply not my preferred style. I think Miller’s adaptation of this epic Greek tale has an intriguing, fresh approach (her efforts did not go unnoticed), but in my honest opinion, the prose and dialogue felt slow and a bit dull for me at times. I had trouble sympathizing with Patrocles, who came off like an endlessly self-deprecating pity-party. The romance aspect felt predictable and hardly thrilling for me. I ultimately decided to finish this novel in the hopes that it would become more interesting later on, but even the most climactic moments of the story left me wondering… is that all?
So much expected, but, new. This book is very entertaining, it tells the story in a way that you know what is but you are given insight of what might have been. This is a great read for anyone interested historical writings.
Mythology Made Real.. I loved this book. It made the relationship between the Achilles and Patroclus and the bond they shared make sense on so many levels. The portrait of Thetis was a surprisingly hostile one. She appears far more serene in the poem than she does here. That may be the only issue I had with the book, besides the fact that it wasn’t gay enough.
Searing and Deeply Imagined. The reviews of this book that struggle with the love between Achilles and Patroclus say more about the readers than they do the story. For me the portrayal of their love was as visceral and compelling as it was realistic based on an entirely plausible interpretation of The Iliad. This is what love feels like between any two lovers, regardless of their gender. I couldn’t put this book down.
Amazing!. It broke my heart! I never expected it! Must read
Song of Achilles. Brilliant!! Absolutely gifted rendition of the tale. Heartfelt. I treasured it.
The Song of Achilles. Beautiful storytelling and amazing descriptions for all characters, landscapes, scenarios etc. All around wonderful take on the Iliad.
Thanks for the spoilers, Apple?. Downloaded this as a sample, as I’d been really looking forward to reading this, and for whatever f-king reason there was a video at the end of the book sample. I click on the video, it’s an interview with the author on rewriting this book or some crap. Literally 30 seconds into the this video she just outright says the ending. Why the f-k would they put this f-king video in with a sample of a book? Thanks Apple Books. 👎🏻 guess I’ll skip this one.
Unparalleled. Absolutely incredible, life-changing read. The prose is beautiful, the love between Patroclus and Achilles is wonderfully fleshed-out, the thematic issues surrounding on humanity and identity are thought-provoking...I could go on forever. This book influenced the way I understand love and the human soul today. It’s a beautiful retelling of a beautiful story written in a beautiful way. I cried so many times throughout the book, and it can still bring tears to my eyes to this day. Miller continues the multi-millennia tradition of storytelling about the Trojan War in a timeless and extremely moving way, and this book deserves the same legitimacy and respect as any other work based on the Iliad and/or the Trojan War.
Beautiful Work. Lovely and heartbreaking. I recommend getting this enhanced edition - It was very helpful to get more info about the characters by clicking on the names.
Wow. I’ve never cried so much or read a book so fast, this book is amazing and I love it so much, I absolutely recommend it to others!
“Enhanced edition” is dumb. I got the enhanced edition because it was the same price as the regular edition, but the enhanced features were lame. There is a link when certain characters first appear that shows a synopsis of their story and an illustration — that’s it. And the character descriptions were all full of spoilers! I had to stop reading them. And then later in the book when I actually would have liked a little character description to call up there were none to be had. Also, which characters do and do not have a description appeared to be entirely random. Don’t buy the enhanced edition.
Beach Read!. Great fun summer read, I enjoyed reading this especially not he beach !I was a bit hesitant it was going to turn into the movie Troy which I was pleasantly surprised it did not. How many times have you been told about the Trojan horse, I was dreading reading about this again and let’s just say no need to worry.
Definitely a recommend read!!. Honestly I cried for 2 full hours and have some great memories from this book I absolutely loved it
I simply read this book because a girl I liked was reading it and she was like I should read it. It was fire though no cap
My favorite romance. Love love love this book. This is the best love story I’ve ever read. I cried after reading. Can’t recommend highly enough.
timeless. i am relatively new to the greek mythology world; i actually think this is the first book i’ve read aside from the odyssey in high school but this is one of my favorite books i have ever read. the way madeline writes is so captivating, and the characters are so palpable. it is a completely refreshing take on such a retold story, and the relationship between patroclus and achilles so needed this makeover. i don’t cry easily from stories/ movies but i cried all throughout this book.
Breathtaking!. This has been a few of the stories I have genuinely enjoyed and had a hard time putting down. It was recommended through a mutual friend, and found it hard to believe someone out there has thought out this whole story line, something I was thinking since the first time we read the Iliad back in 10th grade in my high school years. It’s incredible. I loved it.
Awesome. The book was very cool and enticing, it's hard to get past the homosexuality of Achilles and Patroclus but besides that it's pretty cool. I think it would've been better if Achilles and Patroclus were just good friends instead of lovers.
