Redshirts by John Scalzi Book Summary

Redshirts is John Scalzi’s Hugo Award-winning novel of the starship ensigns who were expendable...until they started comparing notes.

Tor Essentials presents new editions of science fiction and fantasy titles of proven merit and lasting value, each volume introduced by an appropriate literary figure.

Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. It’s a prestige posting, with the chance to serve on "Away Missions" alongside the starship’s famous senior officers.

Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to realize that (1) every Away Mission involves a lethal confrontation with alien forces, (2) the ship’s senior officers always survive these confrontations, and (3) sadly, at least one low-ranking crew member is invariably killed. Unsurprisingly, the savvier crew members belowdecks avoid Away Missions at all costs. Then Andrew stumbles on information that transforms his and his colleagues’ understanding of what the starship Intrepid really is…and offers them a crazy, high-risk chance to save their own lives.

With a new introduction by Mary Robinette Kowal, author of the Hugo-winning The Calculating Stars.

I know, I know!. This book hasn't come out yet. I am reviewing it on spec. The concept is worth a leap of faith. In fact it alone is worth a good review. Someone should have done this a long time ago.

WOW. Everyone knows that stories 98% of the time stories follow certain rules. Like the main people don't die because they have to be on next week. This book stomped all over those rules and I loved every minute of it. I really loved the ending! I laughed so hard, and was swept away a few times as well. A good read.

Scalzi at his best!. Scalzi weaves a masterful tongue in cheek love letter to the genre.

It's Good. Take Star Trek, The Twilight Zone, and the movie Galaxy Quest. Through in references from Star Wars, Dune, and The 6 Million Dollar Man, and you've got Redshirts a pretty funny and pretty touching story.

Redshirts. A romp through the eyes and lives of red shirts on away missions and their desire to set things right. We enter either a future world or alternative universe, but it doesn't really matter. What matters is that things get set right for everyone. This book hd me in the first 5pages and the twists, turns, and weirdness continued for the entire story, up though the last paragraph. A great read highly recommended.

Redshirts. Great, fun read. Best ending. Ever.

Very enjoyable!. Very silly, lots of fun, poinant ending, well worth reading

Surprises you. I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. It was a great read that also provides excellent social commentary.

Neat book mate. Every universe you write a book on is another universe that an author is destroyed. Scalzi please don't kill us I don't want to go mad with power. The story was also very predictable due to the invisible star trek patterns that scalzi figured out. But don't worry we will end this madness once and for all.

Hilariously thought provoking.. A trip through space through the eyes of the often overlooked with enough twists to keep you reading. A must read for anyone that likes the space military books or shows.

CRAP!!!!. I have read all of this author's books. This one was just pure crap! Wasted my $ on this one.

A comedic, satirical sci if adventure!. Okay, I am sensing a trend, and it is that I basically have to blow through a John Scalzi book in very short order. It's just hard to put it down. Something about it keeps you blazing straight through. This one is no exception, although its short length helps. I am so close to the obvious target audience that I can almost see Scalzi writing it as I read along. This is for nerds and scifi fans ages 25-50 who grew up watching Star Trek and similar shows, are tech and Internet savvy, and probably played an lot of video games. It really could be a novel for pretty much anybody else too, except for the strong adult content and language which are pretty typical of Scalzi's work (stuff you probably hear at work, though). Redshirts is a comedic/satiric sci fi adventure. The book was entertaining from start to finish. It's so current and savvy that at times it doesn't feel like a real novel, more like like someone's blog (actually, part of it IS a blog). The writing is solid. It has a pace that keeps you going, and doesn't drag like so many books out there seem to do, to me. I think Scalzi is actually quite gifted, to be able to bring so many of these elements together in an entertaining way to make a story (even one with a satirical premise). I can't point to any big weaknesses like I have with other authors. Part of this may be because he writes shorter, fast-paced works. The ending was happy and satisfying, and even quite touching (as I remember Old Man's War being, as well). I also enjoyed the 3 Codas at the end, creatively written in first, second, and third person perspective, respectively

Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

... and yet not what I expected. I enjoyed this. Anyone familiar with the "Red Shirts" can imagine what it might be about. It was ...

Fun romp!. The story has the qualities of a Star Trek episode but then gets twisted and remixed by the odd-ball irreverent mind of John Scalzi. Great fun, especially for sci-fi TV and movie lovers! Great laughs with equally great plot elements.

Oh well, it was mostly good.. This is a really good read, for the first 200+ pages. Then it really takes a turn for the worse. I've read most of John's books and had nothing to criticize. You'll like the story. Great fun. But skip the last 30-40 pages.

"Redshirts" is not what you expect - it's better. Having never read Mr. Scalzi's worked before and given the subject matter and genre, I anticipated humor in the vein of Douglas Adams. Early on I was disappointed that it wasn't funnier, sillier, livelier somehow. That it turned out to be thoughtful, charming, and even moving was a surprise and a pleasant one. I read this book in a day, which wasn't planned -- I just kept on reading instead of doing things I should have been doing.

NOW DRM Free on Apple. Thank you for fixing the DRM problem! Hopefully this is the beginning of the end of DRM for books. Apple now only needs to note that it can be read on iPad, iPhone or anything else including your computer with an ebook reader program.

Stunned it Won. I am stunned that Redshirts won the Hugo. I keep googling it to make sure I didn't misread it or something. But it did. It won the Hugo. Not that it's terrible or anything. It's OK, but that's about all you can say for it. What on earth has happened to the Hugos? Maybe it all really is just a bad science-fiction television show.

Can I be in a list of dead people?. John, if I preorder your new book, do I get to find my name in it under some awesomely tongue-in-cheek pretense? J-C

Interesting novel. This is the first John Scalzi book that I read, and after reading it, I want to read more of his work. It was a very smart and funny book. I started reading it because I was intrigued by the title. I have always been a big Star Trek fan. I thought it would be an interesting satire on ST:TOS. It turned out to be this and so much more. Scalzi explores the relationship between reality and fiction, similar to the themes Heinlien explores in Number of the Beast. In doing so, Scalzi also explores the meaning of existence. I would highly recommend this book.

Really starts at the end. Fun read, and really gets engaging in the first coda. I loved the way the author finished this book. Human and very moving.

Last of Several Hundred. I have read multiple hundreds of books in my life and this has got to be the dumbest most disappointing book that I have ever read. I actually thought that the part with the crazy machines had to be a dream and when I realized that it was actually real I almost quit reading. I just had to quit later on anyway. This is even more disappointing considering all of the enjoyment which I have derived from all of the other books that I have read by this author.

Great read!. Wasn't sure how this book would be but I really enjoyed it. Once I accepted the premis, which is a bit unique, I really fell into the story and chacters. The end came sooner than I expected, but there's more... Be sure to read every bit! I will read more by this author. Enjoy!!

And a bottle of Romulan Ale to go..... It's a must read for writers, sci-fi fans and, of course fans of Trek, not necessarily in that order. It's witty and fast-paced, provocative but not heady. Great beach read. I was wondering about 30 pages in how he would keep the story going without degenerating into a Dr. Who episode, but he pulled it off. Hats off to the author and all you future readers who will be part of the story shortly. Don't ask. Just read. Now to turn on the TV and try and forget the fourth wall. Live long, redshirts.

complete self indulgent junk. Forget what I spent on this book. I want two hours of my life back.

Great book!. This is a terrific book that ended up not being at all what I expected. Even though it's not necessarily a humor book I haven't laughed out loud this much since first reading Douglas Adams. I wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone who has enjoyed Star Trek, science fiction or just good smart witty books in general.

Thinking science fiction. Redshirts is another fine John Scalzi book. His premise makes you think you are reading several old Star Trek episodes blended together in his kitchen then someone tried to reassemble the story...in the end it was clear all along. Scalzi entertains and his characters have depth and life. For someone that wants thought provoking sci-fi, give this book a read and our will get your reward. Or maybe you'll earn a headache... It's about perspective

Other books in series are way better. Worst book in the series. Didn’t finish it.

Hilarious. John Scalzi has outdone himself with ‘Redshirts’, a book that shows how people who are thought to be expendable can break the system and come out on top.

Excellent story. This book was very entertaining, thought provoking, and touching at the same time. In some ways, it reminds me of an old Star Trek novel where Kirk, Spock and McCoy are replaced by the actors that portray them in a futuristic adventure. This story goes much further, delving into the thoughts and feelings of characters along both sides of the main story divide.

Simply great. First i thought it was a cliche sci fi ...
