- Amazing5 star

I can honestly say that this is one of the best books i have read. I found myself so into this book i couldn’t put it down. It was so captivating and had amazing visuals. The book is far better then the movie, and way more precise on Christian and his feelings for Ana. I’m very impressed.

- Wonderful book5 star

If you love sexual pleasure, this one is for you! I swear, I am not used to this kind of stuff, but I was drawn in immediately! I am a 23 year old male, so this is very new to me, but still! I love this book! There’s something about the literary concept, that drives me crazy, I can’t stop reading!

- Very interestin3 star

Although, this book has a great story line, I found it to very difficult to get into. I struggled to finish the book. I did enjoy how EL James developed the characters, but that’s about it. Maybe the next book will be better …

- Love, Love, Love!!5 star

The book that started it all! Must read!

- Who edited this?1 star

I am palm twitchingly appalled that the editor of this “series” let this go to print. Is this the sign of the dumbing down of America? I gave this a shot thinking, there is no way these books are as terrible as I’ve heard. I was wrong. So wrong. You’ll learn quickly that the author has a penchant for repetition. Every character is “taciturn”, Christian “cocks his head”, Anastasia “bites her lip”, Christian is “mercurial” and “JEEZ, OH MY! Like sooo hot and bossy!”. My subconscious just dropped an anvil on my head for spending money on this crap whilst my inner goddess (double back handspring+layout) taunts me, “muahaha! told ya so!”. I remember writing fantasy stories in middle school about my crushes, this book makes my prepubescent writing seem like War and Peace. If you’re a lit nerd like me, you might enjoy reading this while thinking of all the ways this story could’ve been improved, from one “laters, baby” to the next “we aim to please”. And if you are reading this, just a tip: there’s a whole world of erotic and romantic literature that is well written and engaging. This ain’t it, sis.

I am in tears right now! The story has ended and I feel as I have been wounded! I have never in my life read a book after seeing the movie that has caused me so many different bouts of emotions! I became the a part of the story and I could not put it down, I even watched the movie again, but the book had me more attentive! Thank you!

If you like erotic romance, have at. If you prefer history or spy novels, or factual books or ANYTHING else, do not read this book.

- So much better than the movie!5 star

Nothing more to say.

- If You’re OK w/ Po*n in Writing, Have At These5 star

As much as I loved reading all three books, I can’t help but mention that it seems to be a big imbalance of sexual acts over romance and connection. But the characters are well developed and it’s such a long book. I loved how much there was to read in each novel.

- Yikes1 star

I believe I could write better than that ... only I don’t have that train of thought or fantasy. Tough to read poor writing.

- I never read5 star

Great series

- Eh3 star

She kinda annoyed me. The book to me doesn't have a real plot to it. It was really slow.

- More banter than bang2 star

Excuse the title of my rating however, it seems to be the most accurate way to explain the first book of this series. Most of the book is a 'work-up-to' story and not actually what people who want a fun, exotic read are looking for. It was mostly the emotional journey of the female and not the intensity many people were interested in. Hopefully the next few books are better... although I'll not be purchasing them until I hear that they have more of what I'm interested in when it comes to a sexually-oriented series. Just wanted to be honest- we ALL know why we chose to read this book, haha!

Loved and hated this book, it's poorly written but I also couldn't put it down. The narrator, Anastasia, seriously irritates me sometimes. Her "inner goddess" is completely ridiculous. "My inner goddess has her pom-poms in hand - she's in cheerleading mode." Seriously?

- If she bites her lower lip one more time. . .1 star

After a great deal of encouragement from my friends, I finally broke down and decided to read this so-called enthralling and taboo tale. For those who don't have time to read the rest of my review, let's just say that it took a whole lot of persistence on my part to finally finish reading it. I started reading 50 Shades 2 1/2 years ago and have read many wonderful books in between. This became my fall back book whenever I ran out of good books to read or if I was waiting for an appointment, you get the idea. This book was so difficult to appreciate that I felt like I was forcing myself to read one of my college textbooks. However, being one of those people that MUST read a book before I can see the movie, I forced myself to finish reading this book just prior to the release of the motion picture. Now that I have read it, I'm not sure I will be capable of sitting through two and a half hours of Ana biting her lower lip and stomping around acting like an ungrateful brat every time the big bad billionaire wants to shower her with gifts. Seriously, is Ana's denial of extravagant gifts supposed to convince the female species that Ana is a strong independent woman? Come on. We're not talking about Wonder Woman here, Ana is a recent college graduate looking for a position within a dying news medium. She drives the stereotypical hunk of junk and "worked her way through school" at the Mom and Pop Hardware Store. How realistic is it to expect that a girl like Ana would turn down anything Christian had to offer? She agrees to be the submissive of this gorgeous "self-made" (his adoptive family is uber wealthy too) billionaire, but she draws the line at accepting gifts from said billionaire? I get it, the book is fantasy, but even fantasy must find a basis in reality to be entertaining. I can appreciate that it is difficult to write an interesting story about two star-crossed lovers once you remove the Vampires and Werewolves, but shouldn't the author have been able to recognize that when she first started writing Twilight Fan Fiction? The Twilight Sage wasn't popular because a wealthy handsome man with a dark past fell in love with an unlikely (although very likely as modern storytelling goes) bumbling and awkward girl. It was popular because Edward was a vampire and he was quite literally addicted to Bella. There was no substance to the Bella and Edward story once those plot elements were removed, so what made the author of 50 Shades think that this story could stand on the Ana and Christian relationship alone? The characters were so badly developed that by the end, I couldn't recall why I was supposed to care what happened to either of them. Sure Christian has a dark past, but we get zero hints as to what that past includes and Ana, what of Ana? She grew up in a broken home, but other than that, absolutely EVERYTHING has always gone her way, right down to landing the handsome billionaire who desires her for no reason whatsoever. Please, this man can have any woman he wants and he chooses Ana because. . . he likes the way she annoyingly bites her bottom lip and stares off into space as her inner Goddess jumps up and down like a drunk cheerleader in her head? Character development aside, the number one thing missing from this tale that has received 5 stars from most of the average everyday reviewers? This book has absolutely no plot and considering that the book is about sex, one would at least expect a climax of some sort. But no, making it through hundreds of pages of a woman with voices in her head chastising her for her choices, offers no reward. Instead, we are expected to read book two to find out if anything interesting occurs, which likely also means that we'll have to read book three to find out if these two undeveloped characters live happily every after. Aside from the very explicit and sometimes downright disgusting (the tampon episode) descriptions of Ana and Christian's physical adventures, I'm not sure what this story has to offer? I was absolutely sick of the lip biting a few chapters in and literally rolled my eyes every time she mentioned her inner Goddess. What type of inner Goddess salutes their host for being a man's submissive? Shouldn't the inner Goddess encourage Ana to take charge? I suppose that's just another thing that completely confused me about this book and the reason why I am having difficulty writing anything good about it. In closing, if you're looking for an utterly unbelievable romance filled to the brim with steamy sex scenes, the old faithful Harlequin romances are still your best bet.

- Spare Yourself the Horror2 star

I was told to spare myself, to refrain from indulging myself in the torture that Fifty Shades of Grey is but I just had to find out how bad it was for myself. It was bad, real bad.

- I wish I had my time back!1 star

By far, the most poorly written book I've ever read. The plot is boring, the writing style is simple, and the characters lack depth. I wanted to see what all the hype was about and I wholeheartedly regret reading it!!!

Don't buy this it is stupid you can literally get thousands of FREE stories like this on God why would you buy this, don't, don't buy, DO NOT BUY GOOD GOD HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO SAY THHHHIIIIIISSSSSSS.

- Good book, terrible writing4 star

I loved the storyline of this book but the writing is AWFUL. Still worth the read.

- Don't support this kind of thing1 star

It portrays, and romanticizes an abusive relationship

- Loved It!5 star

The read the whole trilogy in one week. I really liked the character developement. There was more to reading the books than just them having sex. I was actually sad when i read the last page in the last book. I'm now taking my time re-reading from the start. Still loving it as much as i did the first time!

- Open minded.5 star

Although as many may have already stated, the writing of this novel is very poor. There is a lack of originality, is quite repetitive and many points on the point of view of the character are unnecessary and make the character dictating the tale sound far too weak, immature, insecure and mundane to continue. Many label this trilogy as "mommy porn" or shame them for their containment of BDSM. Despite the more physical faults in this novel, the themes of love are very driven though both the captivating plot and enticing characters. Christan Grey is portrayed as a controlling monster and some may see this as a disgusting attribute to the novel, however, I see it as a strongly developed character that greatly contributes to the over aspect of the novels. The characters share several quite touching moments, amusing banter, inside jokes and are quite genuine. I have personally fallen in love with this trilogy (but I emphasise, NOT the writing skills.) I encourage others to give this a try, as I assure you this is a lot more than horrific BDSM or "mommy porn".

- Pour une lecture assez érotique5 star

J'ai aimer, je me demande maintenant a quoi va ressembler le film.

- Poorly written1 star

The only good thing the book series had, was the publicity

- Worst book1 star

So boring. Terrible writing. By far one of the worst things I've read. A huge joke compared to any good book. You might like it if you're a sex crazed teenager with a porn obsession and nothing else going on in your life.

- The feels5 star

This book is amazing a twisted love story that makes me truly emotional.

- Disappointed1 star

After hearing so much about this book and I had to read it for myself to see what the excitement was about. The book did not have to this vulgar all the time, it was boring. I cannot feel any sympathy for the characters as they both were annoying. This ia a story about a wolf who found a sheep and convinced her she was a Lioness until she saw the reflection of them both for who they really are. The writing itself was very basic and dull, I found myself thinking this writer needs a thesaurus I am dissapointed i was duped into buying this book. I wish I could get my money back. The only other time I felt this was when i saw the movie “The Purge”

Very interesting! Great love story :)

- Great introduction into the erotic romance genre.3 star

This book was my first erotic romance novel i ever read, When I read this series I enjoyed it very much, BUT once I started branching out & reading lots of other romance novels that are better written, with a better story, and with more complicated characters, I cant read & enjoy this book anymore without seeing its flaws & expecting more out of what it offers. I recommend this book to a beginner into the adult romance scene BUT now that I'm a much more experienced reader I can think of multiple romance books that will make you cry & fall in love with the characters while also getting hot and bothered ;3 If you wanna read a book thats similar to Fifty Shades of Grey but better written check out Bared to You - Sylvia Day

So glad my friend recommended this book! <3

- Grey? More like heart wrenching Black5 star

While initially I was hesitant to read this book for the more obvious reasons which were the BDSM theme and constant sex I find after reading it on a whole it contributed to the deeper plot and appealed to a sense of Pathos that sent my mind and heart in a tailspin much like Ana and I am going to eagerly read the next book as I am intrigued and anxious to know if Fifty Shades can truly get darker...

- All the Negs - liers, liers .....pants on fires5 star

So, all the literary geniuses who wrote negative reviews, you know you lied. This book may not have literary nutrition but I devoured it. For 3 days I didn't care about my smart phone, TV , movies, music, mail, email; I just needed to read! I don't remember ever reading a book with such intensity; I don't remember ever reading a book without skipping a paragraph or a page . I had to read every word, every sentence, every letter and at the end I wanted more. So I read all of them, including Grey and now I am changed forever. Every book I have picked up since and started reading is dragging on like molasses. Yeah, in conclusion, anything E.L.James writes, I'll read - for the pure pleasure and fun of it. No pun intended 😋

I will admit, the ending made me cry. Then I realized there are two more books. So, I am hoping they will meet again! Anyone who has read the second book, please tell me if you like it!

- Awesome!5 star

I'm not one for romance but this book is awesome!!! Awesome series!!!

- The best!5 star

This is one of my favorite books! If you like romance, read this! If you like drama, read this! I don't know why others feel the need to give this book a low rating, maybe they anti romantic I don't know, but this is a great book and a great series! I love Christian and Ana. Their love story is epic. They go though so much and keep fighting for each other. I like the fact that he can't stay away from her. It's like he is addicted. They were meant for each other. This series takes you through a roller coaster but it's worth it!

- Fantastic5 star

Always a GREAT read!

- Hot, erotic romance5 star

Most people who hate on this book are people that did not like the multiple sexual encounters that occurred. However, this book was by far the most detailed I have ever read, I mean it says EROTIC, of course there's gonna be sex. The diction chosen was glorious, not to mention the small hints she puts about Christian's life. This unusual romance puts the cliché aside and brings emphasis to the frequently asked question, is it love or lust.

- Loved it5 star

It took me 2 days to read this book. I could not put it down I normally don't read but this book makes me want to can't wait to read the 2nd and 3rd!!

- Worth your $$$5 star

I read all three of the Fifty Shades books & they are by far the best books i have ever read. Ever since these books i've been having such high standards for any other book i may read. Don't listen to any of the bad criticism. These books are completely worth the money & time!!!!
