The Primarchs by Christian Dunn, Graham McNeill, Nick Kyme, Gav Thorpe & Rob Sanders Book Summary

Created in the Emperor’s own image, the primarchs had long thought themselves to be princes of the universe and masters of their own destiny – they led the Space Marine Legions in glorious conquest of the galaxy, and no enemy of the Imperium could stand against them. However, even amongst this legendary brotherhood, the seeds of dissent had been sown long before the treacherous Warmaster Horus declared his grand heresy.

Gathered within this anthology are four novellas focusing on some of the mightiest warriors and leaders that mankind has ever known – Fulgrim, Lion El’Jonson, Ferrus Manus and the twin primarchs Alpharius and Omegon – and the roles that they may have yet to play in a war which threatens to change the face of the Imperium forever.

Read it because
Find out the deepest mysteries of the primarchs. Who is in control of Fulgrim’s body – him, or a daemon? What happens when the Alpha Legion fights against itself? Just what secrets is the Lion keeping? And what could the tragic Ferrus Manus have done to prevent himself from becoming a head shorter?

Blah. Basically boring filler. I miss the early days of the Horus heresy series...

More Questions Than Answers. The book is all over the place in the Heresy timeline and left me wondering where to pick up the next book for any of the answers posed at the end of each section. Good stories overall if you can get through Fulgrim's part.

Not essential but some good stories. You don't need to read these stories as part of the Heresy series, they just offer a bit more background on some of the characters. Unfortunately it focuses on the Primarchs who've already had entire novels dedicated to them so there's a bit of rehashing. The Lucius story is interesting as its tying up some loose ends of Fulgrims novel. The ferrus story is decent enough. The Omegon story is likely the best giving a twisted spy game type story that shows how complex the Alpha Legions allegiances are. Sadly the Dark Angels story is dull and adds nothing. It's the 4th author to have a go at the Dark Angels and so far all have been pretty dire with bad writing, dull plots and a Prinarch who comes across as a dull, spoilt child - I'm wondering if they all hate the Dark Angels as we keep getting told that he's a great hero but mostly he seems incapable of doing anything - which tends to rub off on the authors who struggle to do anything with the 1st legion.

Mixed bag. A collection of decent short stories, with 1 poor (oh the poor Dark Angels) 1 great (Alpha Legion at its twistiest) and 2 above average. Worth a read.
