The Island: Part 1 by Michael R Stark Book Summary

The Fever struck hard and fast, rising out of the slums and claiming victim after victim. At first, reports trickled across the wire in small segments relegated to the final seconds of the broadcast news. Lost among stories of failing economies and political bickering, few noticed what proved to be the birth pangs of a monster. Within months, the disease dominated the news as thousands died and infection rates soared.

William Hill knew his chances of avoiding the virus sat squarely between slim and none. With experts predicting a global pandemic, his choices boiled down to not if, but where he would die. While the rest of the world built barricades and set up distribution points for food, he chose a simpler end. The island had been one of the last and best times with his father. He couldn’t think of a better place to spend his final days.

He wanted sun and sand, fresh fish on the grill and cool nights by the campfire. He wanted feel-good days filled with oldies on the radio, days when he could hoist the sails and run before the wind. He didn’t set out to make enemies, but he did. He didn’t plan on becoming humanity’s last hope for survival, or watching over an old woman and an eerie little boy either.

To William Hill, the island seemed as good a place as any to die.

He just didn’t realize how good.

Meh. Most of this book is all character development and the writing itself left me confused it also randomly mentions goblins " "None of us knew goblins would be hunting the forests at night either or that their sole intent would be to kill off the survivors.” Excerpt From: Stark, Michael. “The Island - Part 1.” iBooks. This material may be protected by copyright. Said goblins are never mentioned before or again and I was left feeling so confused at the end that I no longer wished to read the sequels.

Really good book. Really good book. Great pace and tone. Apocalypse suspense horror a la Stephen King, yet quite original. I enjoyed every minute of this book!

A Fun Read Nickname: out of bounds. A fun read--Stark gives the reader just what he promises, so there is no overreaching or pretention--and it's nice to be back in the Outer Banks. But maybe some more work on the characterization? The main character, Elsie & David are pretty convincing, but the gang in the house in Books 2 & 3 are distinguished mainly by their names, with the occasional throwaway remark. Why include them if they have no particular bearing on the story line? Something that's being saved for the subsequent books? Why not start giving them something to interest the reader, & tie them more closely to the principle characters earlier in the plot development?

Hook, Line and Sinker. I feel my title best describes my venture into this series, once started, I was not able to stop until I had finished the last page. I have downloaded the remaining books and am looking forward until such time that my daily grind allows me to slip back into The Island. A new fan, Steve C. Durham,NC

Fantastic!!!. Read all five parts. What a riveting story this is. I just couldn't stop reading it. Stark is a master story teller....

Bla. Short book that takes way way too long to get anywhere

Better than others I paid more for. Good read. Well worth the two dollars it cost me to read the whole series. Enjoyed it very much and look forward to reading the next installment.

Good plot and characterization. There are incidence of overly descriptive word painting. I prefer to use a little more of my own imagination. I would definitely recommend this book.

The island part 1. I'm a 52 yr old woman who loves this book

Great writer, but this is not a fantasy book.... Great writing and a great story, especially considering that it is a free book. It's a horror story, though. A good one, but it probably doesn't belong in the fantasy category.

Wow!!. Boring! Waste of time!!! I kept reading it hoping it would get better but I dudnt

Good read. Believable characters and interesting story.

Book1. Ok to start. Does start rather slow but let's you in on character development along with a slow rise in suspense. On to book 2!

Descriptive. It's not that I didn't enjoy the long winded descriptions or the intro about the main character's life, but that made the book a slow start. It was misleading and I couldn't finish reading the book.

Great story, awesome price. I've read Parts 1 through 3 and just shelled out my .99 cents for part 4. So far I've been very impressed. This story has just the right mix of creepy, scary, weird, and exciting. It also manages not to be depressing, which is not typical (but IS most welcome ) in most post-apocalyptic fare.

The Island Part 1. Top notch tale. Good character development with complex story and fast pace. Hard to put down.

the island. furedhjsnfiukcjredsnjkdends x h

Dickenesk. Great at describing things, but really slow story.

It passes the time. Not bad for a free book. The author likes to really describe things. He gets so wordy and descriptive it breaks up the flow of the read. But all in all not a bad book.

Exquisitely horrible book. I really did not like this book at all.

The Island Part 1. I have read all three books, and really enjoyed all three. Part One was just a little too descriptive, and I skipped over a lot of pages to find the story. I just do not care how the sun shines on the buildings, or how old the roof is and on and on and on for pages. I get bored. If it is important in later segments introduce it then, as in how it looked the first time you were there. I want the story to grab me right off the bat. Once the book got down to business, it was great. The story is wonderful, and I was so glad Part 2 and 3 got right into the story with just enough background and description. I slammed through all 3 books in just a couple of days. I could not put them down, and I am more than willing to pay $.99 to see what happens in Part 4. Thanks Michael Stark for an excellent series keep them coming!

bhjswnjbgmg. horrible

Captivating. This is a great start to a story you don't want to put down. Once you have read some you will thirst for more. I can't wait for more I have devoured every word to the end of chapter 4

The Island. Well written. Had me hooked from the very beginning. Looking forward to Part 2.

Good story. I really enjoyed this! I was thankful that for now the language was not too bad and it was very clean. One tip (I noticed it was a work in progress) though. At times it seemed a little wordy. I think you were just trying to provide the reader with lots of details, which I did enjoy. At times they did seem a little much though, almost like you went on a rabbit trail. Overall, a great story so far. I would definitely recommend it =)

A fun read. I just destroyed the first part, this was a very fun read. I intend to grab the last bits, I found the level of detail and description amazing. the author paints some vivid imagery, and barring a few editorial issues (namely, a bit of odd punctuation) the writing was flawless. I'll be recommending this series to friends, I am interested to see where this is going.

One of the most riveting series. This is one of the best series I've read in YEARS!

The Island. I am a well read 45 year old appellate attorney who loves fantasy, while knowing that 95 percent of it is crap. That having been said, this series is one of the best that I have ever read. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Excellent story. Good writing and an excellent story. Not your spaceship type of sci-fi, more of a horror story (at least so far). I warn you once you start reading this series you will not be able to put it down! I burned through parts 1 and 2 of book one in one sitting. Now I can't wait for further installments! Great work Mr Stark!

Good read. I read a lot of books in this genre and I enjoyed this one. Starts slow but does make you want to read the next book

Great read. Great author with a great story. Keep writing I will keep reading.

The island part one. Very interesting premise eager to read the rest of the installments well written good descriptive writing , quick reading because its very direct at this point

LOVED it!!!. I've read each part and each one is better than the previous. You can't help but be drawn into this story. The later parts contain some scenes so descriptive that I got chills. The writer does an excellent job of pulling the reader into the tale in a way that you can really feel what the characters are feeling... everything from fear of the Fever to fear of the unknown. Excellent excellent work!!! I can't wait for more!

Great Book. I'm not normally a person to take the time to write a review but this deserves one. Great book that kept me up all night reading. Hope to see more from Michael Stark in the future.

Great book. A good read I was there with William the hole time

Getting better and better!. I am loving these books! Just downloaded the 4th for $.99. I will be buying the series! Can't put it down!

Very good book. I can’t wait to meet the book writer one day

The Island - Part 1. waxes Anthony Bordain in some places but overall quite good. Can't wait to read the two books.

The Island. The story started out a bit stiff, but then started to draw me in. After several pages, I settled in for a good read, but was surprised when it ended just as I was beginning to really get into it. At less than 200 pages, this should be relabeled as a novella. But, it has me wanting to know more, so I will go on to the next book. I just hope it is a bit longer!

Scared the crap out of me. I anxiously await the sequel.

The island. It's ok I'd read it just for the fun of it

A grandpa. Good writing and just enough story to keep you reading and wanting more. Hope the rest is this good

Not bad. It's a good story but too much back story development that is inconsequential and not enough plot and character development. I skimmed over large sections because the back story was a little long in the tooth... The story itself is a good read.

Misleading. Based on the title, and the preview, I thought this book would be about a guy escaping disease to live on an island. Perhaps I was right, but the book itself spent page after page talking about this guy's life instead of getting to the point. And then, when it finally gets to the point, the book ends? I'll read book 2, but don't hold much hope for it.

The Island. Sadly the author goes into long winded and unnecessary details all too often which makes reading this book a long, drawn out experience. Very drab indeed. Should be more 'to the point', just tell the story! We don't need to know every character's back story. The end of a chapter should leave the reader hungry to start the next, This book doesn't.

Excellent. A free book? It's bound to be rubbish, right? Oh so so wrong. A page turner from start to finish. Read it.

Good. Good read

the island part 1. Excellent read. Hooked from the start!

The island. Great books

Free - and good!. Great intro to the story - short and snappy and I read Books 1, 2 & 3 back to back. Reminiscent of Stephen King - writing really paints a picture in your imagination. Well done Mr Stark!! Just bought Book 4 for 99p - need to know what happens!!

Good story. The first part ensures you know exactly All there is to know about the characters .. Bring on parts 2 and 3 Good read

The island. Please read all five books as they just get better. I enjoyed them all very much.

The island. So obv this is part one of the island and tbh it's started off pretty slow! Found my self losing interest in a lot of parts. however the plot of the story sounds good and I actually do expect it to get better so bring on part two! Hopefully it does get a lot better.

I want more!. Was hooked from the first page. The author talks about starting with a good base to anchor himself to and what a base. Amazing. My first book on my new iPhone 😍😍

Do keep reading. A little offbeat in parts but a really good read and I'm reading thru the rest. It's keeping my interest and am enjoying.

Keep Reading!. This is the first book by Michael Stark I have read and I confess to struggling at the start, but I'm so glad I continued. Part 1 is setting the scene for later parts, giving you the background of the main character and world events, and yes, sometimes it's a bit long winded! What kept me going was the storyline, I wanted to know more, I wanted to know what happened next... so in that respect Mr Stark did a damned good job and I've now read the first three back to back. All in all the book itself warrants three stars because at times it was a struggle; the extra star is because overall I am really enjoying the series and I know it gets better. Happy reading.

The island. Loved it, 5 stars, keeps you guessing right through till chapter 5. Good storyline and very engaging writing with a strong central character.

The Island - Part 1. So far this book has me mesmerized. I can't wait to start Part 2 and see where the journey will take me!!

So far so good. Despite only having just finished Part 1 (which is the only reason I’ve not given 5 stars) I must say, it’s got me. I have enjoyed every minute so far, and despite the laid back nature with with William tells his story, the encroaching dread is ever present and lying just beneath the surface, so that I was turning pages, desperate for more, and annoyed each time I was forced to leave off. Part 2 here I come.....

Wow just wow. The title is vague, and the cover illustrating is confusing but the Island is a great book. Intriguing characters and a plot that keeps you guessing. I am not a sailor but I love the beautiful maritime descriptions which adds real colour to an amazing story.

Way too descriptive.. Got 150pages in n gave up. Waffles on and takes ages in between describing what's actually happening to the main character. Not my kind of book.

The Island. Intriguing!

Terrible. Talk about a terrible book. I could not finish it. Boring is an understatement.

The island. The premiss sounded intriguing. However, in reality it was Tedious. Uninteresting. disjointed.

Terrific!. I have to confess to being bowled over by this series. The author has a great grasp of language and writing and skill at character development. His main protagonist is a very believable character and though the series veered off in an unexpected direction it was still gripping and believable. I could hardly wait for the series to continue as I read them in order. Really, really well-written, the way a series should be. I’m even satisfied to reread it, at least 3 times now. It really is that good!

Not a bad read, but a bit greedy on the author's part. The scenario is definitely interesting, although it goes from reasonable and believable to a little silly by the end of the first book. I think the author should have kept to the more believable path he began the novel with, and the story would not have begun to feel a little hollow. The sign of good writing,IMHO, is when you begin to live with the characters or scenario once the book is closed and you've been away from it for an hour or two. This definitely happened for me through a good many parts of books one of this story. However, I couldn't help but feel angry that the author broke the book up into four segments and asked so much for each segment. I could not justify spending that much money to finish a story that I could feel was beginning to get too far away from my ability to willfully suspend my disbelief.

The Island. Remarkable story telling, truly captivating from beginning to end!

Loved it. Waiting for the patiently for the rock

The Island. This book had me from the very first page. Told from the first person POV, the stream of consciousness writing stays fast paced and interesting, and doesn't delve into internal musings. It is written as if it is an around the campfire story (the author says it began as a bedtime story for his children) and keeps that tone all the way through. Having reached the end of the first installment, I want to cry out "What happens next??" An excellent read; I am off to start part two... Nobody better interrupt me!

Great Story!. As an avid reader, I ran out of books to read and I got this book because it was free but I instantly fell in love with the characters and exciting and interesting plot! After reading the first part in one night I went back and got the next 4 parts the next day. An exciting and often surprising storyline. I could not put this book down and can't wait for the next part of the story! Thanks Michael Stark for the great read!

Awesome book. Only got this as needed something to read and was free, within the first chapter was hooked and downloaded the next 2 parts now waiting for the rest in anticipation, have not put it down at all would recommend this highly to all

The island. Good fleshing out of the characters, will definitely want to finish this book and will look for more of this author.
