Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
WINNER OF THE 2014 EDGAR AWARD FOR BEST NOVEL
WINNER OF THE 2014 DILYS AWARD
A SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL BEST BOOK OF 2013

From New York Times bestselling author William Kent Krueger, a brilliant new novel about a young man, a small town, and murder in the summer of 1961.

“That was it. That was all of it. A grace so ordinary there was no reason at all to remember it. Yet I have never across the forty years since it was spoken forgotten a single word.”

New Bremen, Minnesota, 1961. The Twins were playing their debut season, ice-cold root beers were selling out at the soda counter of Halderson’s Drugstore, and Hot Stuff comic books were a mainstay on every barbershop magazine rack. It was a time of innocence and hope for a country with a new, young president. But for thirteen-year-old Frank Drum it was a grim summer in which death visited frequently and assumed many forms. Accident. Nature. Suicide. Murder.

Frank begins the season preoccupied with the concerns of any teenage boy, but when tragedy unexpectedly strikes his family—which includes his Methodist minister father; his passionate, artistic mother; Juilliard-bound older sister; and wise-beyond-his-years kid brother—he finds himself thrust into an adult world full of secrets, lies, adultery, and betrayal, suddenly called upon to demonstrate a maturity and gumption beyond his years.

Told from Frank’s perspective forty years after that fateful summer, Ordinary Grace is a brilliantly moving account of a boy standing at the door of his young manhood, trying to understand a world that seems to be falling apart around him. It is an unforgettable novel about discovering the terrible price of wisdom and the enduring grace of God.

Awesome book. Highly suggest it

I loved this book!. This book was beautifully written. I want to remember certain paragraphs forever.

Ordinary Grace. A lovely story worthy of its award. Reminds me of To Kill a Mockingbird in its hometown simplicity.

Simply Marvelous. A beautiful story. The author doesn’t write, he creates. I found myself walking along with the characters, feeling what they felt, learning along with them. Their world, and all that happens around them and to them, envelops you. And you emerge different, and better, for having spent time with them.

A divine offering through guided actions of free will. ..

Ordinary Grace. Great character development. The story was riveting, I had trouble putting the book down. Great story about brotherly love. I was really surprised by the ending!

Just Beautiful. This book floats like gentle current in the river. The writing is spectacular and the story is told with humor, tact, but truth. I loved it.

Excellent Story. I don’t read nearly as much fiction as non-fiction but found this to be a warm and interesting story that I looked to following. Highly recommend.

Ordinary Grace DJBjdtx. Loved this book. Inspiring. Captivating. It will go down as a favorite. Thanks June!

The Best One Yet!. I have read every book published by the author, and feel this one is the best one to date. He paints lovely pictures with well crafted words. I look forward to the new book due in August.

Wow. What a wonderful read

A lovely book to get lost in. An intriguing story with interesting characters. The writing takes you back in time and allows the reader to lose oneself in the story.

Not An Ordinary Book. This is, by far, one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. It was recommended to me by my daughter who loved it. A beautiful story about family and the harsh realities of growing up. It’s told from the perspective of a middle-aged man as he recalls the events of his 13th summer that ended the innocence of childhood. You won’t be able to put it down.

One of the best books I have ever read,. I wish everyone could read this book, it is so human and real. What a great masterpiece!

Ordinary Grace. This book takes you on a journey through pain, tragedy, despair and grief that only can you understand if you have suffered a great loss as well. The transportation in time with details of youth are fresh and clear. The ripping and scaring of a family as they each struggle within the isolation of grief and the search for answers, all answers, within, physical and most reaching spiritual. The whys that are never to be answered and unattainable peace to be sought. And the healing balm of "Ordinary Grace."

Ordinary Grace. Excellent book. Beautiful storytelling.

Painful story beautifully written. Set mostly in early sixties rural America, this is a story about a small town in Minnesota and one family’s eventful summer there. The mystery wasn’t such a mystery to me but the story and characters are beautifully written and developed. I’ll have to check out other books by this author, another Books sale-shelf discovery!

Ordinary Grace. A beautifully written story that left me with a sense of peace and hope. Highly recommended!!

Beautiful. A heartfelt story of love, loss, forgiveness, and understanding. I truly enjoyed reading this book.

Ordinary Grace. This book takes a solid third place in my list of all time favorites behind Killer Angels and The Source. It is too insightful to be considered entirely fiction and too absorbing to be considered purely recreational reading. It is a work of heart. - Dave Sadler, avid reader for 67 years

Gripping in a Quiet, Steadfast Way. I loved the gentle, yet gripping flow of this sad story full of truth, love, and not-so-ordinary grace.

A bit to lengthy. Excellent author but this book struck me as mired down by unnecessary details. Excellent story, however, my interest waned regularly.

To Kill a Mockingbird meets Catcher in the Rye. A stirring, introspective, fun summer read. Well thought out real characters. I loved it.

One of my all-time favorite books. I loved the perspective of this book, written through the eyes of a young man - whose wisdom is amazing. I look forward to reading another book very soon from William Kent Kruger.

Awesome Read. I wasn’t sure I was going to continue reading after the first two chapters…I’m so glad I did. I’ve read other books by Krueger and know he starts out slow, building a foundation. The message of this book was so profound and I was in tears, good tears, reading the last chapters of it. It made me think of “Stand by Me.” It had that kind of feel to it. Wonderful story!

Excellent read!!. Such a meaningful book and beautifully written. Read it in just a couple days. One of my all-time favorites.

Ordinary Grace. An excellent book I would recommend this book to everyone Petie

The ideal man. If only to get to know the beauty of the main character Nathan this book is worth reading. The book is grace filled and offers all of us a picture of the awesome grace of God.

Great read!. Loved this book! Can’t wait to recommend it to friends.

Ordinary Grace. Well written.

A truly good read. I started this book early today and finished it late today. I do not often sit and read a book from cover to cover in one day, however this is a story of a family dealing with circumstances beyond their control. The whole cast of characters are so powerfully portrayed you feel as if you know them. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a story that can mesmerize them.

I dare you to stop at chapter 3. Wow this book was amazing!!! I want another!!! It's one of those books that change you

Solid Story Telling. His descriptive imagery brings us into the story without fail. Real characters, flawed and burdened. Believable and genuine. Another solid read from this talented wordsmith!

Wonderful message. After reading This Tender Land by Krueger, this was my second of his. I found both novels to be very special and I adore his characters. Ordinary Grace, however, was more difficult to get through. On the other hand, it does offer profound and rich messaging, so I’m quite happy I stuck with it!

Great read. Wonderful Memorial weekend read. Started out very reminiscent of King's "Stand By Me." Took off to a totally different plane. Thoroughly enjoyed the novel. Worthy of the Edgar.

Ordinary Grace. A wonderful story of family and friends…

More than a bargain. I wasn’t expecting much as I had never read this author and it was $1.99 for an ebook. Wow was I pleasantly surprised! I really enjoyed the character development. It kept my interest. Would definitely recommend this book.

Amazing!. Ordinary Grace was a magnificent story! A book I would certainly read again, very enjoyable!

Page Turner. I was captivated by the wit and intelligence of our protagonist. A 13 year old filled with curiosity and the desire to be a best friend to his little brother. The father that never said no to his children when they wanted to tag along. A delight for me to escape into the summer of 1961 with the neighbors of this small town.

Great book from start to finish!. Great book from start to finish! The story was excellent. I hated to put the book down.

Ordinary Grace. Ordinary Grace was one of the best reads in a long time. I loved the story setting in Minnesota, I could visualize the characters and town. It was suspenseful and the mystery of not one but several deaths. I had a hard time putting this book down. I definitely will read more from this author!

Ordinary Grace. I, also, have read all of Mr. Krueger's books and thoroughly enjoyed them, but found Ordinary Grace extraordinary. It is filled with insight onto how real people handle life. It reveals a writer who deeply understands grace and forgiveness, friendship and family . . .and love. I had this feeling about a book called To Kill Mockingbird when I first read it in 1962. I hope Ordinary Grace finds many readers in 2013.

Ordinary Grace. This story touches your heart and spirit in ways not to be forgotten. You read until it's finished, and then lay the book on your chest and cry at it's beauty. It's a wonder of heartfelt writing. Thank you, Mr. Krueger for it's graceful peace.

Well done. Impressive delivery of life, love, understanding and events that mold one’s future. An excellent read.

New favorite. I LOVED this book. It’s in my top 3 favorites I’ve ever read. So heartfelt and beautiful and I appreciated the perspectives the different characters with different backgrounds offered. Reading This Tender Land next.
