The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult Book Summary

An astonishing novel about redemption and forgiveness from the “amazingly talented writer” (HuffPost) and #1 New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult.

Some stories live forever...

Sage Singer is a baker. She works through the night, preparing the day’s breads and pastries, trying to escape a reality of loneliness, bad memories, and the shadow of her mother’s death. When Josef Weber, an elderly man in Sage’s grief support group, begins stopping by the bakery, they strike up an unlikely friendship. Despite their differences, they see in each other the hidden scars that others can’t.

Everything changes on the day that Josef confesses a long-buried and shameful secret and asks Sage for an extraordinary favor. If she says yes, she faces not only moral repercussions, but potentially legal ones as well. With the integrity of the closest friend she’s ever had clouded, Sage begins to question the assumptions and expectations she’s made about her life and her family. In this searingly honest novel, Jodi Picoult gracefully explores the lengths to which we will go in order to keep the past from dictating the future.

Excellent. Really enjoyed reading. I frequently recommend this book to people.

Amazing story!. I've never had the holocaust presented in such a realistic way. As usual Jodi weaves the past and present together with such amazing detail. Love all her books, this is my new favorite.

Riveting!. I've never read a Jodi Picoult novel as fast as I read this one - I devoured it. Very well written with a tapestry of intertwining characters and plot twists - the last one was a total and perfect surprise. Having heard and spoken with a Holocaust survivor, I had her pictured as I read, which made it all the more real to me. This is a sensitive and thought-provoking story of one of the most horrid, cruel times in the last hundred years.

stellar read. By far my favorite book of all time. Picoult captivates readers in a series of point of view changes and a forever changing story. This is the kind of book that when you finish, you sit back, and stare at a ceiling for 3 days. Insanely good.c

Fascinating read. I picked up The Storyteller and couldn't put it down. It is a fascinating read with all kinds of twists and turns. I cried many a time while reading this book. There were parts that were extremely hard to read without crying. The story within the story was amazing. I don't know how you wrote it because it is at times painful to read but I am so glad you did. Thank you Jodi.

Once again, a riveting story told by a master storyteller. Just having finished The Storyteller, I’m wondering if there’s another book of Jodi’s to read. I think I’ve read them all. I’ll be waiting anxiously for her next book

Perfect!. Loved, loved, loved! Better than The Nightingale!

Loved it.. It was a great read!!! i loved the characters and hearing their side to the story was fantastic. Would definitely recommend this book.

The Storyteller. One of her best yet. Totally riveting. I read it in two or three days because I couldn't put it down.

Amazing!. Absolutely loved it! Page turner all the way through! Ending took me for a huge surprise! Must read for all Jodi Picoult fans!

One of my favs. Such a good book kept me wanting to read more all the way to the end!

Kept Me in Suspense. I enjoyed this book. I found I could not stop reading. The graphic descriptions of WWII Poland and The concentration camp was difficult to read, but written beautifully. The ending was a surprise.

Wow. Loved the book

Incredible. This story has made laugh, sad cry happy and cring... Bravo Jodi !!! I cannot explain how intense this read was. I can't wait for the next... I am a huge fan of your writings.it keeps getting better every time I pick up anew book from her...😊😊👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️🙏

Brilliant and moving!. When they say a picture is worth 1000 words I declare this book to be worth 1000 pictures. This story is painted vividly and I could visualize the characters well enough to feel as if they are sitting in the room next to me, I must say that this story is significantly better than any realistic-fiction books I have read. It is written so beautifully that you can feel the hunger, smell the pastries, touch the fear. I highly recommend this book and commend Picoult for a wonderful read.

Amazing. Had me hooked from the being! Sometimes in tears & others smiling! I loved it! A must read!

Not as expected. I've read all of Jodi's books and loved them all. I believe she is a brilliant author. This book, however, I was very disappointed in. Of course the subject in itself is heartbreaking, and I had a hard time even finishing the book. It was gruesome and disappointing.

The Storyteller. I've enjoyed all the Picoult books I've read, this one makes me want to find out so much more about that terrible time in our history.

Great!. Loved this book! For sure Picoult's best book. So different from her usual and so much better.

Good book/Long Chapters. I enjoyed this book. The ending made everything worth it. However, many chapters were very long and I felt like it took me forever to finish the book. I kept having to put my bookmark in the middle of chapters. Like I said though, the ending made it all worth it.

The Story Teller. I absolutely loved this book! It was hard to put down. Of all of Jodi’s books this is my favorite. The historical fiction and detail make you long for more information. She constantly have you on your toes asking for more.

Too lengthy. I usually love Jodi Picoult books but this one left me a little disappointed. It is extremely well written and informative and really brings tears to your eyes when reading the atrocities that occurred during the Holocaust. At the same time- it is too drawn out and long and some of the story lines that come together at the end could have been omitted. All in all it is a good read but I skipped entire chapters- would have been better if a little shorter.

Flat and Stale. I looked forward to reading this book as I have read many books surrounding the Jewish Holocaust (due to my family’s history) and there are so many well-written books on this topic. This book is probably the worst I have read in this genre. I wish I had not wasted my money (another benefit if I had gone to the library and checked the book out instead). First: The main character (Sage - which is ironic and would have been amusing had this book been a comedy) isn’t even likable. Her “woe is me” attitude is unbelievable given the context this book deals with the Holocaust. Second: The book is slow. Third: The friendship between Sage and Joseff doesn’t feel natural, nor believable due to the lack of substance. Fourth: The vision of Jesus in the bread loaf? Really, that was just plain silly. Lastly, the only good part of the book is Minka’s story and there is nothing new or fresh. It’s not written with feeling in my opinion. The book is just flat. This is the 2nd book of Picoult's that I've tried to read and I guess it boils down to the fact that I don't like her writing style so it’s time to move on. I seriously don't know how this book got so many 5-star ratings.

Compelling reading. Truly enjoyed reading this compelling book. I was captivated from the begin. The story teller won’t disappoint the reader.

Not what I expected. Good book gave it four stars but very depressing! Not the ending I expected. It left me haunted.

The Storyteller. Excellent book! I wished the author would not have ended the book without finishing the main character and her life. What happened to Sage? Does she move? What about Sage and Leo? What happens to them?

Great blending. Multiple stories in one. The grandmother's, the story the grandmother writes, Sage's, Leo's, and the two brothers'. 6 different voices and perspectives, 2 completely different stories all blended so carefully and masterfully to make 3 different genres: Horror/Fantasy, Historical and Modern Romantic Mystery. Page turning, engrossing and thought provoking. Absolutely loved it.

Storyteller. Incredible!! I couldn't stop reading it.

The Storyteller by Jodi Piccoult. This book was an amazingly realistic portrayal of one woman's experience in the Holocaust, as told by her granddaughter. As a child of Holocaust survivors myself, I could relate and connect to this book so much because it made me feel as if I was in the Lodz ghetto and experiencing the daily terror of Auschwitz when children were senselessly killed and innocent men and women were brutalized. I loved the way the author Jodi Piccoult interleaved the contrasting German Nazi's perspective on becoming an SS Officer with the perspective of a Holocaust survivor. Though this book is fiction, it is based on truth and is a very vivid portrayal of a hellish time in history, and yet it touches the human element so sensitively. It also raises questions of morality, euthanasia, revenge, and survival. Love, friendship, trust and loyalty are recurring motifs throughout this novel. The ironic twists and turns also make this book so enjoyable. This is one of Jodi Piccoult's best books, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about the Holocaust and it's impact on our world today.

I fell in love.. The Storyteller was one of the best books I have ever read. The way she described the Holocaust from both the point of views of a Nazi and a survivor were just on point. Loved it.

Her best book yet!. Love all of her books. This one was above and beyond anything I could have imagined or asked for. A MUST read!

Not like her other books. I expected a classic Jodi book but was disappointed. The horror of the holocaust is not what I wanted in a book from her. Very disappointed.

Really well done. I read a lot of ww2 historical fiction and really enjoyed this book

Her worst. The only one of hers I didn't finish -- and I have enthusiastically read them all. Very disappointing.

Awesome!. I couldn't put this book down! The best book that I've read in a long time!

The best!. The best book I've read. It is thrilling, traumatizing and a page turner for sure! I started it on a 5 hour plane ride and read continuously for 4 hours. You would love it although I was sad reading about the torture at the camps. It reads like a history documentary but with strength and determination of a woman.

The Storyteller. As usual, I'm not disappointed by Jodi's newest novels. Amazing weave of fiction and non fiction into a new story. I love how Jodi takes topics in our society and makes you question yourself with moral issues and challenges your thoughts. Thank you!

awesome. this is the best book i read in 2014!

At an age when as a Jewish American I have known survivors of Auschwitz. Survivors of Auschwitz’s horrorors and the dreadful March fromAushwitz to Bergen-Belson…one in particular Magda Hershberger who lectured about her experience at many university’s until her death 2 years ago. As an artist I traveled back to the shtetl of David Horodok and documented some of the remains of that small village ,the killing fields and forests where the Jews were murdered. I also documented the death camp of. Madanek This was in 1998 The cemetery memorial has been destroyed and redone at least 3 times since then because of willful desecration

Amazing Story. This is my favorite book from Picoult so far. I would encourage anyone to read it. I couldn’t put it down. It’s been a couple of years since I read it and I’m itching to reread it.

Great read. This book has so many details but it's a thriller. Can't put it down. Jodi had some it again.

The Storyteller. The story is compelling and masterful. I found it a little difficult to understand at the beginning but then got hooked. I read it in two days. It is a haunting tale of evil and forgiveness.

Awesome !!!!!. Really enjoyed this book. !!!!!! Thank you for creating a wonderful story line, great characters, and an interesting 360 view. I was getting very bored of " same old, same old , drama mystery, detective story". I'll be reading more of your books.

Chocmid08. Seriously an amazing book! Worth the price! Jodi Picoult is an amazing author!

Couldn’t put it down!. Very interesting & informative…took a few very unexpected turns.

Just ok!. I am a huge fan of Jodi Picoult's but this book and the Lone Wolf have both been hard for me to get into the storyline. The Lone Wolf I trudged thru and finally ended her. This , The Storyteller ended up being good but it took so long to get to the meat of the story that I almost gave up! It ended up being a beautiful story.

One of the best books I have ever read. This book is the best book I have ever read on the holocaust. The way Jodi Picoult weaves the characters into the story and how they all become intertwined is absolutely amazing. You can't help but feel what Sage, the main character is going through. I kept asking myself, what would I do if I was Sage. I still don't have an answer.

WOW!. This novel captivated my attention from the beginning. Picoult had me laughing, crying and flipping the pages wondering what was going to happen next. She did a fascinating job describing the different angles of the human mind and conjuring the doppelgängers in all of us. possibly one of the best books i have ever read!

Interesting book. Loved this book. It keeps your attention. The subject matter can make your skin crawl but at the same time it is a part of history that should not be forgotten. There are still those who would wish to eradicate a part of earth’s population and this book demonstrates the ease of putting this into practice.

Great book. It was hard to get into this book at first, but I'm glad I stayed with it because it eventually grips you. It's so difficult to read about the atrocities of the Holocaust, but this book tells both sides of the story. The characters are well developed and unique...and the ending had an unexpected twist.

The Storyteller. Very good intrigue and well plotted! Nice and smooth reading.

storyteller. A very thought provoking book by Jodi Picoult I have read all her books and found this one was painful due to her subject, I am old enough to remember WW11 and this was such a terrible nightmare for so many innocent people that a stark reminder should happen for those who do not remember. Well written but awful to remember.

Fantastic book. This is a fantastic book. Well written, engaging, emotional and educational. Thank you, Jodi.

Tear jerker. I couldn’t put this book down. What a great story

The Storyteller. Just like the rest of her works, totally enthralling!!! Can't wait for the next book.

Perhaps her best yet!. Great engaging story!

Great book!. This book had me captivated so much so that I ended up baking my own challah bread for the first time so that I could imagine what minka was talking about. It is truly sad that there are people out there that don't believe this could have happened. Great book and sad that I've finished it

The storyteller. This is one of the best book I have Read.

She does it again!. Jodi Picoult writes another spellbinder book. One that you cannot put down. She weaves in and out of characters and stories within stories. Make some tea, bake some bread and curl up with this one.
