The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker Book Summary

“An intoxicating fusion of fantasy and historical fiction. . . . Wecker’s storytelling skills dazzle." —Entertainment Weekly

A marvelous and absorbing debut novel about a chance meeting between two supernatural creatures in turn-of-the-century immigrant New York.

Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay by a disgraced rabbi knowledgeable in the ways of dark Kabbalistic magic. She serves as the wife to a Polish merchant who dies at sea on the voyage to America. As the ship arrives in New York in 1899, Chava is unmoored and adrift until a rabbi on the Lower East Side recognizes her for the creature she is and takes her in.

Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire born in the ancient Syrian desert and trapped centuries ago in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard. Released by a Syrian tinsmith in a Manhattan shop, Ahmad appears in human form but is still not free. An iron band around his wrist binds him to the wizard and to the physical world.

Chava and Ahmad meet accidentally and become friends and soul mates despite their opposing natures. But when the golem’s violent nature overtakes her one evening, their bond is challenged. An even more powerful threat will emerge, however, and bring Chava and Ahmad together again, challenging their very existence and forcing them to make a fateful choice.

Compulsively readable, The Golem and the Jinni weaves strands of Yiddish and Middle Eastern literature, historical fiction and magical fable, in a wondrously inventive tale that is mesmerizing and unforgettable.

The Golem and the Jinni. Wecker is a brilliant storyteller making the mythic seem human and the strengths and frailies of our human natures somehow elevated in the curious eyes of the immortals. A great tale - I recommend it highly!

Spellbinding.. A reminder of my love for the novel.

Magical story.... I really enjoyed reading this book, I couldn't put it down. Beyond the wilder concepts, such as fiery jinnis and an earthy golem, there are themes of honesty, love and truth that feel like they hold true...even in a magical world.

Good but slow in parts. Solid prose and an interesting concept that slows for the middle third of the book to the point where I felt I was just slogging through it. Still recommended though.

A fascinating read. This was a very entertaining a d thought provocative book. Told in a way reminiscent of A 1001 Arabian Nights at points, while delving nin lesser known Jewish dark arts. The authors attention to detail is exquisite, if at times a bit winded. The characters are lively, colorful and captivating, and she manages to infuse such realism into her fantastical creatures that the reader cant help but cheer them on and wish fora happy ending to their severely thwarted lives.i hope this ois the first of many more great reads from this very talented writer.

The Golem and the Jinni. I hope Helene writes sequels to this book. Very interesting. A very, very good read!

The Golem and the Jinni. I couldn't put this book down. I am only sorry to see it is the author's first book, as I immediately wanted to read anything else this truly gifted author had written. Cannot wait for more from this writer!

Great Storytelling. This is amazing writing. I have never read a story quite like it. It brings so much in to question, beliefs, faiths, religions, etc. It takes place during a time when people had to go between Europe and America by ship and women didn't go around unchaperoned. It mostly has a realistic feel with a few big exceptions. The two main characters aren't human. There are also magicians and such. It's pretty low on the low fantasy scale, but at the same time those fantastical elements are what the whole plot is about.

Excellently written. I read for books like this!

Very written Lit (Historical fiction/fable). This book is very well written and is a remarkable and unique tale.

The golem and the jinni. A wonderful story beautifully written. I will read this again while I wait for this talented author to write her second book. Bravo bravo. Encore

Imaginative Work. Although this book wasn't quite The Night Circus, which it was compared to and one reason I decided to read it, it's still an imaginative world that I enjoyed being part of for a while. Without giving anything away, I did think the ending was too abrupt. Other than that, I have no other negative comments.

Engrossing tale. Interesting characters, plot moved along by mystical creatures brought into life in turn of century NYC.

A book for all times. This story could have been written for the world today or hundreds of years ago. The story of the Jinni and the Golem is a story of courage, of being different and overcoming obstacles in everday life. Truly one of my favorite books.

The Golem and the Jinni. Helene Wecker. I am stunned at the complexity of Wecker's plots as she intricately weaves them together in seemingly unrelated stories. Characters evolve who, by their very natures, fight to stay apart until their relationships become so integral to the outcomes that are building you bang yourself on the head with HTF did I not see that coming. Really, one string was driving me so crazy every time she returned to it I told myself she needs to cut this whole thing out of here. Five minutes later It had become the explanation and integrator of all the other story lines in such a profoundly seamless manner that my mouth literally gaped open and I applauded with a huge grin on my face. This story starts out like a freight train, picks up speed just when you need it to and then slams you around like you are a character before delivering flowers for your curtain call. Read this. It's long and it won't let you down, ever. Best new novel now. Rick Williams

A great read!. If Neil Gaiman and Michael Chabon ever collaborated I doubt the result would be this FANTASTIC!- thank you Helen Weckler.

Amazing read. Not only was the basic plot clever and uniquely creative, but the way the whole story came together was genius. I definitely have a book hanger over now! Hope to read more from this new author in the future.

One of the best books I ever read. (Slight spoilers) Of nearly all the books I’ve read, The Golem and the Jinni was the most addictive. A compelling plot made magical by the mythology of Middle Eastern and Jewish folklore, Helen Wecker weaved a fictional story that was impossible to put down. Each character, no matter how minute, was interesting and loveable. The cultures involved were portrayed accurately and even exquisitely. The semi romantic friendship between Chava and Ahmed was a joy to see develop, and reading the ending brought tears to my eyes. I was so depressed when I’d finished it, because I knew it would be hard to find another book I’d enjoyed so much. This is a great book for someone who is just started out reading, or just anyone who has a whole day or 2 to sit down somewhere cozy and get sucked into another world.

A must read. A captivating and ingeniously created plot that combines fantasy, history, suspense, ethnicity, and profound philosophical thoughts through the eyes of non-human characters with distinctly strong and compassionate personalities. Lyrical and enchanting prose with powerfully effective dialogue. Unique and well worth reading.

A fantastic tale for a pandemic. I was hooked right from the beginning and couldn’t put this book down until the very last word. The characters were delightfully drawn and interwoven to make this fantasy seem all so real.

The Golem and the Jinni. Ah, what a wonderfully spun story. I found myself eager to pick up where I had left off as soon as I put this down. I love supernatural and fantastical stories, but have grown a bit tired of the monotony this genre has to offer. This, I'm happy to report, is something that is fresh and wonderful. With a twist of ancient fables set in late 1800's New York City at the height of immigration, action-packed sections, and a dash of both lustful and comfortable, familiar love... This book played like a movie in my mind. I'm happy I bought it, I will be reading it again.

Amazing. Brought me to true and heartfelt tears and sympathy for those made differently.

Loved it!. I was enchanted by the characters and the story! A delightful and engaging read that I couldn't put down.

Got me through a difficult time.. Started a new job a little over a year ago and it was very stressful for me and I wasn't good at it yet. This book was my one of few escapes. Good story, liked all the culture. Highly recommend.

Too short by far. My FAVORITE book since Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, this is a fascinating glimpse into immigrant culture, a fable and a love story all wrapped in one. The supporting cast is a well-drawn out, a believable mix of flaws and nobility and accidental heroism. Really, really enjoyed this story and wish I could read it again for the first time.

The golem and the jinni. I was unable to put the book down. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a story as much as I did this one. I sincerely hope the author will write a follow up story or another one altogether. REALLLLLLLLY good story. Thank you.
