The Good House by Ann Leary Book Summary

The Good House, by Ann Leary, is funny, poignant, and terrifying. A classic New England tale that lays bare the secrets of one little town, this spirited novel will stay with you long after the story has ended.

Now a major motion picture starring Sigourney Weaver and Kevin Kline!

Hildy Good is a townie. A lifelong resident of a small community on the rocky coast of Boston's North Shore, she knows pretty much everything about everyone. And she's good at lots of things, too. A successful real-estate broker, mother, and grandmother, her days are full. But her nights have become lonely ever since her daughters, convinced their mother was drinking too much, sent her off to rehab. Now she's in recovery—more or less.

Alone and feeling unjustly persecuted, Hildy finds a friend in Rebecca McAllister, one of the town's wealthy newcomers. Rebecca is grateful for the friendship and Hildy feels like a person of the world again, as she and Rebecca escape their worries with some harmless gossip and a bottle of wine by the fire—just one of their secrets.

But Rebecca is herself the subject of town gossip. When Frank Getchell, an old friend who shares a complicated history with Hildy, tries to warn her away from Rebecca, Hildy attempts to protect her friend from a potential scandal. Soon, however, Hildy is busy trying to protect her own reputation. When a cluster of secrets becomes dangerously entwined, the reckless behavior of one person threatens to expose the other, and this darkly comic novel takes a chilling turn.

Good House. I loved this book. The disease of alcoholism is so cunning and baffling. This book shows how the alcoholic justifies every situation to keep the drinking going. Kept my interest from beginning to end.

"LUSH" character piece. I was drawn into the accurate and LUSH depiction of the alcoholic in denial. A nice piece of fiction, as well as a cautionary tale of the power the disease of alcoholism to guide us and blind us at the same time.

The Good House. After reading "The Good House" I immediately bought all Ann Leary's other books. Where has this author been all my life? "The Good House " is an insanely good book. Funny, compelling, nuanced and a proper page-turner. I couldn't stop reading. I haven't read such a marvelous book in a long time. Hoping Ann Leary will produce many more. I know this sounds over the top- so feel compelled to say that I'm not a friend or relative of the writer. Just really loved this book.

A Good Escape. This was a very easy read that I enjoyed. It is the perfect book for 40 something's...

Wicked good read!!!. Have to admit, I saw this book recommended in People magazine of all places. Being a rag, I wasn't sure about the 4 star review, but I decided to chance it. I'm not sorry. Wonderfully written, wry, cynical, hilarious and captivating. And all of that occurs in the same chapter. You will love Hildy Good. Mrs. Leary is a terrific writer and I WILL read her again!

The Good House. Ann Leary met her husband Denis Leary when she took his comedy writing course at Emerson and it shows in the quick laughs she places in the salt frames homes she sells in her home town. Inside her own home she seeks comfort in her wine cellar. Fast paced, smart writing makes this a great escape or denial. Populated with Jake, Rebecca, Frankie, this town is both familiar and insightful.

The Goode House. Beautifully told story. well paced and strong clear characters.

Great Read. This story definitely pulled me in within the first few pages - I wasn't planning to read it all in one evening, but couldn't put it down. The writing is witty and captivating, the characters were so rich and alive - I'm still "there" 24 hours later.

The Good House. It's a good thoughtful read. In some sense more of a character study than a story, but very well written and enjoyable.very clearly the author understands New England and small towns.

The Good House. Really enjoyed this one. Interesting that the whole book is one woman’s stream of consciousness, that a totally fascinating story can be based on her thoughts. It’s a sort of mystery too- little by little you are given bits of information that increase your understanding of the characters, especially the protagonist.

The Good House. This was an amazing read, I laughed out loud & cried of happiness for Hildy. All I can say is don't miss this beautiful opportunity to take u away into a Boston town of many funny, odd, rich, sad, characters, you come to love. To Ann Leary, I say Bravo, you wrote a wonderful story told in a beautiful delightful way.. Thank you. It was great fun!

Loved it. I downloaded this book on Saturday, and didn't put it down until 8 hours later when I was done. It's one of those you wished wouldn't end....I'm still thinking about the wonderfully dynamic characters and 'what they're doing now'.

Well written!. I loved this book. It was sad yet funny.

Great read. I really enjoyed this book. This story moves right along. Although there is background information, it doesn't drone on and on so that you forget what the original point was. I loved the main characters. They are so believable, funny, sad poignant.

My new favorite!. This book was quite well written. You can really see how the characters feel clearly. Especially with Hildy. Hands down best book I've read in a while. I strongly recommend it!!

The Good House. I am so impressed with Ann Leary's writing, I loved this book so much I just bought another one of her books. I admit I just purchased this first book to see how good "Dennis Leary's" wife could write. He has always been one of my favorite actors and I figured she was just mediocre, published because of a name. This book blew me away. I love her style. Now I have to say, Ann Leary's husband is also a good actor. Way to go Ann!

The Good House. Loved it. Laughed out loud a few times when I could hear myself using the same phrase or tone, especially dealing with my grown kids! I live in NYC now but began married life in my first house in Wenham, Mass....romping on the beaches of Manchester, cruising the horsetown roads of Hamilton... even joining the Essex County Club. The locals all seemed so familiar. Took me back to a happier time...only to see that no matter where we go, there we are. Judge not, lest ye be judged! Well done Ann. Thanks,

sunxgods. this book was amazing! A super easy read and was always leaving me wanting more.

So so.. Did not love or particularly enjoy this book. Dragged on. Thin plot. Annoying and uninspired characters whose flaws were stressful and did not enhance intrigue but just annoyed me. Sometimes would tangent into non essential areas, I guess to provide color to history or town life but these jaunts were boring and wound up as frayed strands rather than part of the tapestry. I would not recommend.
