Life After Life by Kate Atkinson Book Summary

What if you could live again and again, until you got it right?

On a cold and snowy night in 1910, Ursula Todd is born to an English banker and his wife. She dies before she can draw her first breath. On that same cold and snowy night, Ursula Todd is born, lets out a lusty wail, and embarks upon a life that will be, to say the least, unusual. For as she grows, she also dies, repeatedly, in a variety of ways, while the young century marches on towards its second cataclysmic world war.

Does Ursula's apparently infinite number of lives give her the power to save the world from its inevitable destiny? And if she can -- will she?

Darkly comic, startlingly poignant, and utterly original: this is Kate Atkinson at her absolute best.

Amazing read!. This book is incredible, interesting and engaging from the first page to the last. The author truly shows us compelling story lines of the protagonist in a unique and provocative way- one life path goes this way and then in another life something is slightly different and sends Ursula in an entirely new direction. If you are interested in a novel that keeps you guessing, keeps you entertained and makes you want to read it again immediately... This is absolutely the book for you. Smart, clever and a great read.

Loved it. Though it was a bit difficult dealing with the switch-backs in time and place, her writing is so beautiful and characterisations done with such utter confidence, I was able to become totally immersed in the story. Worth the effort; memorable.

Life AfterbLife. Kate Atkinson never fails to tell stories that pull the reader into a spectacular other place.

Eh. I love a great book. I can even love an ok book. I really wanted to love this book, but it just wasn't there. The storyline had me very intrigued to keep going, wait to see what happens next.... I found myself barely skimming the pages just to get through it. Hoping it would pick up the pace a little. It didn't. It was a good beginning, a very boring middle, and a pretty decent ending.

Life: OK. This book is a bit of a challenge to review. On one hand the writing is well done, the characters are likable and I love the twists and turns to the story. On the other hand, when the story begins and begins again and again it gets a bit tiring even though there are new details woven in. A bit depressing at times. Overall though I like the book and the plot. Unlike some reviewers I felt the ending was fairly clear. Based on this book I would read another by this author.

Life after life, after life, after life........ Not my favorite KA but a wonderful read, nevertheless. Heart wrenching moments and vivid, well developed characters. A must read for KA fans (like me). A fascinating idea for a novel. This author is a gem and a gift to readers everywhere. Thank you Kate.

Enchanting. This book moved me deeply. Although several reviewers branded Ms. Atkinson's technique as disingenuous and even conceit, I found it intriguing and gripping. I enjoy fiction set in historical contexts greatly and this book felt unique, authentic, and starkly beautiful. Ursula's choices felt timeless, and reflected the life changing events of women throughout history. This story was my favorite fiction of 2014.

Self-indulgent. This book is awful! I have enjoyed all of Kate Atkinson's prior books, and I was looking forward to this one, as she is an exceptional writer. I was so disappointed in this book! It seems that she couldn't settle on one story line so decided to write every story line in one book and trying to pass it off as some type of reincarnation masterpiece. Nothing could be further from the truth. The author was incredibly self-indulgent, and I wasted several precious hours reading this horrible book and hoping it would eventually prove to be worthwhile. Don't waste your time.

Life After Life. Loved it! Read it, tell your friends to read it.

I always seem to fall in love…... …… with Kate’s main characters. They are all rich in their own way! But Ursula is a marvel of an enigmatic but supremely lovable character.

Well That Was Spectacular!. I've always wondered how Kate Atkinson wove the pieces of her stories together, so that they came together with such stunning brilliance and near perfection at the end. Yet, Life After Life manages to transcend all the truly wonderful stuff she's written that came before. I'm afraid you can't say much about the story itself without possibly spoiling someone's future read. But Ms. Atkinson does certainly "get it right." Having just finished the book, I am in awe of her incredible talent.

Slooooooooooow. I'm an avid reader and it took me a week to read this book. It's painfully slow!

Life After Life. What a fascinating read. World War II is a much written about... I am intrigued by the perfect storm that existed... Complacent and ordinary people, disbelief in evil of that magnitude and fear so immobilizing and great that none can quite realize what is occurring. Through this author's eyes we can experience and get to understand the complexities the people of these times were faced with. To relive and correct or at least alter one's choices gives a writer a vast well to write from... Ms. Atchison took this simple premiss and developed her characters so that we could see the complexities within each of them. Most often characters speak to us with only one voice, but though these, we are able to see and believe that there are many voices within all of us. Rarely do we think of ourselves as multifaceted. We live our lives not thinking of the differences we create. We are not given a chance to rewrite our lives... But most of us would do many things slightly or even vastly different. There is no way to go back. But perhaps just understanding that the choices we make will mold our lives and those around us, just perhaps, we can make better choices. I loved the characters of this book... Written with a huge heart, a deep understanding of love for family and country, and a great deal of wit and soul! I will long remember it and recommend it... Enjoy!

Not my favorite Kate Atkinson.... ...however, it earns merit for the way it creatively explores the what-ifs that I'm sure everyone gets caught up pondering in their own lives.

Life after Life. This is an amazing book - beautifully written by one of my favorite authors. When I finished I wanted to begin again. Yes, you have to pay attention but the concepts and depth are thought provoking and worth the journey.

Brilliant.. This was one of the most interesting and creative books I have ever read. I can not imagine writing one storyline let alone a multitude as the author does with this novel. The idea of getting to start your life over to set things right is intriguing. I also thought that the historical aspect of the book was well done, especially the view from the enemy's side. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

Fascinating!. Awesome read. I liked it so much I am rereading parts.

Life after life. Thumbs down

Hard to Folow. I had a hard time following this book. The author kept flip flopping back and forth.

Life after life. Incredible, thought provoking, enigmatic, and her writing is stunning.

Good. Good!

Evolved narrative. The plot device of getting to reinvent Ursula's life each time was novel, and at times hilarious. What took this from an entertaining read to an epic one was the writer's ability to layer a deeper, less explained residual wisdom that might occur, like dipping a candle. The end of the book made the read worthwhile, proving that it wasn't just a device. Bravo!

A MUST READ!. This is the first book I have read by Kate Atkinson but I am eager to read her other books now! She paints pictures with words. Her characters are wonderful. The plot was original and deep. I mourned each failure and I felt joy at each rebirth. This book had me hooked with plot twists & horrific situations where people were heroic. Atkinson is a fantastic story teller. I am so happy to have found a new favorite author!

Disappointing. This book starts with a great premise but gets so bogged down. I kept waiting for it to pick up but it did not. I finally started skimming pages just to finish. It ends literally with a bang, but it is not enough to redeem it.

I loved this book. I really really enjoyed this book. It is one of 41 that I have read in 2018 and it is one of the top 5.

Life after Life. What an interesting book! If you like a novel that makes you think.... About history, about life, about death, about choices and their consequences then this book's for you!

Astounding. I grew to love Ursula, her family, and the revolving door of dogs and periphery characters so completely that the completion of this novel left me feeling bereft. I cannot recommend this book enough, it's lovely.
