The Secret Race by Tyler Hamilton & Daniel Coyle Book Summary

“The holy grail for disillusioned cycling fans . . . The book’s power is in the collective details, all strung together in a story that is told with such clear-eyed conviction that you never doubt its veracity. . . . The Secret Race isn’t just a game changer for the Lance Armstrong myth. It’s the game ender.”—Outside

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • WINNER OF THE WILLIAM HILL SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD

The Secret Race is the book that rocked the world of professional cycling—and exposed, at long last, the doping culture surrounding the sport and its most iconic rider, Lance Armstrong. Former Olympic gold medalist Tyler Hamilton was once one of the world’s top-ranked cyclists—and a member of Lance Armstrong’s inner circle. Over the course of two years, New York Times bestselling author Daniel Coyle conducted more than two hundred hours of interviews with Hamilton and spoke with numerous teammates, rivals, and friends. The result is an explosive page-turner of a book that takes us deep inside a shadowy, fascinating, and surreal world of unscrupulous doctors, anything-goes team directors, and athletes so relentlessly driven to win that they would do almost anything to gain an edge. For the first time, Hamilton recounts his own battle with depression and tells the story of his complicated relationship with Lance Armstrong. This edition features a new Afterword, in which the authors reflect on the developments within the sport, and involving Armstrong, over the past year. The Secret Race is a courageous, groundbreaking act of witness from a man who is as determined to reveal the hard truth about his sport as he once was to win the Tour de France.

With a new Afterword by the authors.

“Loaded with bombshells and revelations.”—VeloNews

“[An] often harrowing story . . . the broadest, most accessible look at cycling’s drug problems to date.”—The New York Times

“ ‘If I cheated, how did I get away with it?’ That question, posed to SI by Lance Armstrong five years ago, has never been answered more definitively than it is in Tyler Hamilton’s new book.”—Sports Illustrated

“Explosive.”—The Daily Telegraph (London)

Wow!!. Nothing short of an eye opening look into the world of professional cycling. Thank you, Tyler!

Cynical Cycling. The details of the systematic doping many of us suspected in professional cycling are revealed in a straight forward and convincing manner by Tyler Hamilton. Daniel Coyle, the co-writer, provides key details that strengthen the weight of the evidence presented. At times the use of Armstrong in the narrative seems a bit forced.

Interesting story. Interesting inside view of the cycling world. The story is absolutely worth reading. Albeit, the book say too little about the flip side of doping. Seems like it is still ok to blood dope and take EPO as long as you are careful and not getting caught. No physical side effects as seen with other drugs? What about amateur riders that are never tested? There is giant dark numbers of people that do this just to beat their friend or boss in a race.

Outstanding and honest!. This book is a pretty easy read and contains a clear and honest look at the world of cycling. This book will change your view on the sport and will definitely change your view of the great Lance Armstrong.

Great book !. I'm sport lover and this book show us the dark sight of professional athletes , mangers , owner , government and institutions. Looks like dropping is every where , I hope the truth like in this book reveal the bad guys, shows the right path to fowling for every begginer

Great Read. Read this in a day. Hard to put down. An avid cycling fan and a long time Armstrong supporter, this was a very telling account of professional cycling in its darkest days. Not sure my opinion has changed much - I enjoyed the spectacle and heroism of the Armstrong era, much as I enjoyed the HR race between McGuire, Sosa and Bonds during the MLB doping era, but the truth is out there. The best were willing to do whatever it took to be have a chance at winning...

Great read. Shattered a world that consumed my sporting interests for years, but it was great to finally read a little truth. As a former aspiring pro cyclist I was disappointed to learn just how naive it was to think I could do it clean. Turns out, in that era it was tough to be clean. I hope Tyler can continue to rebuild his life and someday Lance can come clean completely. Thanks for the honesty Tyler and thanks for always being so friendly on the Gateway rides in Boulder

The secret race. This was a real eye opener! Who would have ever imagined the depths and darkness associated with cycling. Thank you Tyler for your courage and fortitude. You have sounded the depths of blackness, but the TRUTH has brought you back to the light. If you are ever back in Mass. Lets go for a bike ride. John Arsenault

The Secret Race: Inside the hidden world of The Tour de France. Insightful. Great and down to earth recap on the intricacies of professional cycling. It makes you feel like you are present, shoulder to shoulder, with Tyler through everything he went. It makes you understand that, more than a desire to dope and win, it is a desire to have the same chance as everybody else in the peloton.

Outstanding book. Must read if you're a cycling fan and/or enjoy a good comeback story. I couldn't put this book down. The inside stories of his life and career as well as the tone of humility, sincerity, and enlightenment make this an exciting and powerful book.

Great read. Great first hand account of the Tour de France during doping times. Tyler's account of how everything went down is riveting. It shows the true colors of Lance Armstrong, and in doing so i couldnt help but be reminded of the movie Talladega Nights. If you ain't first, you're last means a lot to Lance.

Great. Great book. Don't fault Tyler one bit

The Secret Race is excellent. Thank you for your honesty! Sad but encouraging - thanks.

The secret race. This is a well written book that gives insight into the darker side of bicycle racing and the insidious nature of living a lie. Underlying the story is how power corrupts and how bullies are often rewarded.

The Inside Scoop. Excellent information and proof that all the teams had members that doped.

So they doped... Who really cares?. The EPO years (1995 to 2005) were the greatest years in TdF history; In all of cycling history. Like the steriod era in baseball, bicycle racing was finally EXCITING. These guys were paid to entertain us and they did a great job. It's all over now. The last several years of the TdF have been predictively BORING. Anyone who understood cycling knew Lance was a doper and now we know we know he was vendictive a##hole.

This is real. Too detailed and observant to be a lie. If you follow cycling, it's like going to a concert where you know all the songs. One by one the names and stages ring a bell. Tyler is a doper, but he reverently concedes the truth one dilemma at a time. A very telling ethical discourse on the epo era and one man's struggle with his choices.

Eye opening. The detail that Tyler Hamilton uses in this book makes you feel as if you are a 1st hand witness to the events he discusses. The raw feelings and emotions are gripping; so much so that it was difficult to put this book down. Excellent in all ways.

Great book, a must read for all of us who got caught up as spectators. Great book. I was able to view 2 tours personally and now know the full story. The Tours were entertainment with the script being written by the doctors. Cycling was a ruse. Much respect to Tyler for coming clean.

You can tell.... When someone is being honest. At least I like to believe that is one of the gifts God gave me. I read this book expecting to be critical of Tyler Hamilton and expected to feel unfulfilled with his accusations. But I have to say that I honestly believe he wrote the truth...period...you can just tell by the evidence and the easy, flowing manner with which he presents the evidence. If he wasnt being truthful, you would have been able to tell...the stories would sound forced; the evidence would seem conspicuously incomplete. This book reads like a fast-paced detective novel, and also has some good old-fashioned nuggets of wisdom. I highly recommend this book.

The truth will set you free. I think you should save the five stars for the truly great classics. However, this book was extremely enlightening and entertaining to read. As a cycling enthusiast who wanted to believe Lance for so long, it was eye-opening to read what is very likely how the peloton really rolls.

The secret race. Incredible book! Couldn't put it down. Love Tyler Hamilton!

Just loved this book—so informative, so interesting, so honest. I was struck by how compelling this was to read. Perhaps because I like to cycle and follow all the Tours I was more interested. But I'm not a racer or anything, and found the book to be more of a human drama unfolding in the context of bike racing, rather than about bike racing per se. Still, I do follow the Grand Tours and so I learned a great deal about the inside life of what's going on when those guys are racing.

Disillusioned Cyclist. A buddy of mine led me to this book. I was a rabid US Postal fan and watched all 7 of Lance's tour wins. I read both his books and have been an avid LIVESTRONG supporter. I watched Tyler break his collar bone and gut it out. Incredible. I watched Lance conquer his sport and I was a fan, a huge fan. Like many others my father battles cancer. I wear the bracelet every day in honor of my dads fight I have rode in two LIVESTRONG events in Seattle. I have raised money I have bought a ton of merchandise. I believed. I believed in Lance and all he stood for. Then the top competitors in the peloton started getting popped. I started to wonder how Lance could do it clean but I still dared to hope that he was the one who did it right. I can't believe what a fool I was! While I appreciate Tyler's story and his honesty I find myself angry at the whole cover up nature of professional cycling. I ride myself. I am no racer but I know what it feels like to suffer on a long climb. I marvel at how the pros fly up the Alps and Pyrenees. But this book really changed my outlook and provides a dose of reality about a sport I love.

Refreshing. I feel relieved having read Tyler's story of cycling's recent history and the dark course it followed. It is a candid account of the depths of the human spirit and a showcase of how terribly destructive power and influence can be when it falls into the wrong hands. My love of cycling grew out of this wild period. Tyler's ease makes the truth a little bit easier to swallow.

A great read!. It's been a real eye-opener reading this book! Good on you Tyler; I"ve always thought highly of you & have a new found (increased) level of respect for you. Standing up to not only Lance Armstrong, but pretty much the entire cycling world, took a lot of guts, luckily you have truck loads of that! Onwards & upwards.

Awesome. Thank you Tyler.

The truth hurts. The dots are well connected. As I rider and long time fan of pro cycling this comes as little surprise. This had to come out and in the long run it is best for all concerned parties...especially the riders. At this point in time many of my cycling friends do not wish to hear the truth, I understand this on some level. On the other hand what do they truly know...not much...just 'spin.' Hamilton and Landis have been yoked with too much of this burden, of course they are going to speak out. I appreciate the honestly.

What goes around comes around. I'm glad Tyler wrote this book. Lance is sleep walking dreaming he is awake. It's just a matter of time. Book wise it's an interesting read and explains the business of bike racing. These young men have no hope of trying to do the right thing with a circuit so tainted as this. Shame on the UCI and Tour Directors on not doing a better job of governing their sport.

it's dope!. someone had to write it. like him or not, Hamilton put it out there. at best, the shoes of a professional cyclist are difficult to put yourself in. Hamilton does a good job of taking a snapshot of the peloton--it's indiduals, teams, and morals from both. He really could only do that, as an everday cyclist isn't faced with the choice to dope. of course, they can. but Hamilton tries to develop a tangible, readable framework of the lengths athletes can go to feel like a playing field is level. he asks simply to join him for a few hundred pages of empathy, not sympathy.

Very interesting. No matter what side of the fence you are on, this book is very interesting and enjoyable. It reads quick and holds your interest.

Charlie. Excellent book!! It's too bad Lance just didn't admit to doping a long time ago. Though of all the riders that did in his era he was the best! I will still always be a fan of his. To me he's one of the best ever, after the legends Eddy Merckx and Bernard Hinault.

I could not put it down...A Must Read!!!!. You can't make this stuff up. What a crazy story! Finished in one day. Thank you Tyler for sharing your amazing life with us. Buy The Book......

Enlightening. Whatever one's opinion about Lance, and pro cycling, it will change after reading this book.

Incredible Story. I have followed professional cycling for years and seen the stories of doping that go along with it. It is still shocking to read this story even after hearing the stories and rumors. Well done.

Thanks, Tyler. I remember following Tyler like many others before he doped, his website, everything he was doing back when he was competing.I remember when he told us all back then, that his dog had died on his website. And now to have read this, so detailed, so profound, to know what he was going through on the day his dog did, what a story. I'm finally at peace with Tyler. Thanks, a former, on again, fan. Great freaking read!

Wow!!!!. Great read... Dark, yet enlightening. Kudos to Tyler!!!!

Incredible. Must read. Very well written, story is very well told. Very entertaining and insightful.

A must read. Wow, what a great book. It was very revealing and very interesting to finally learn the truth. Tyler found his integrity.

The Secret Race. Hamilton's adage at the end of this book, "secrets are poison" are one lesson that required more than 15 years for him to learn. Altho, this book painfully forced me to reverse my long term near-worship of Lance Armstrong, it also allowed me to forgive him for all that he allowed into his life to corrupt his soul. You can not read this riveting journey of a man "set free by truth" without realizing that we are all tempted to hide from ourselves, but also given to choice to relinquish the shadows that would easily consume us. This book is "not normal in any way" Thank you to Tyler for his honesty and his courage to help us see ourselves in this process....RLM

The Secret Race. Very well done. Dan Coyle is an excellent writer and researcher. I hope he will do more biographical work. The handwriting was on the wall about Lance, George and just about all of U.S. Postal's cycling team. It just re-proves that old adage: Where there's smoke, there's usually fire... or in this case, serious doping. Finally, Lance can't out-brazen the truth, which takes another leap towards the light with the publishing of The Secret Race. It's a great read, even for non-cycling fans, about how the pros can beat the testing.

An important book. If one wants a better understanding the rigors of elite cycling and why so many doped during the Armstrong era, this is a must-read. It is also a compelling story of one elite cyclist's rise, fall, and redemption. I found the book to be a page-turner and well written, with horrifying detail and some very funny observations, which make the whole volume more human and real. It think the book is a fine accomplishment, only tarnished by poor formatting as an iBook (footnotes flow poorly, some pages are omitted, etc.). If I were to buy it again, I would do so as a real book.

The secret race. This is one of those must read books. We often are to ready to denigrate those professional athletes, such as Hamilton, who use a performance enhancing drug. And for good reason, but as this book points out we miss the systemic factors and, of course, the human condition. As Hamilton points out, the doping is only one part of the equation. These are athletes competing at the very margin of performance. In the end, Hamilton's decision to stop the BS is the epiphany many realize to their credit. To this end, his story is transcendent as well as informative.

Telling it like it is!. Bravo Tyler!!!!

Great. If you love cycling then this is the book for you

Truth and Redemption. Through Tyler's story we are able to see how fragile Mankind is masked in the physically demanding sport of Professional Cycling....A great read....

MCS MD. Comprehensive behind the scenes look at PED use in professional cycling. No sport his physically more demanding and thus the biker who uses PEDs has the most to gain in terms of success. Fascinating account of the intricacies of PED techniques and use by Elite cyclists.

The race..Tyler Hamilton and Dan Coyle. Phenomenal, engrossing, moving, enlightening, and revealing. Revealing of what it takes to be a superior athlete, what one will give and give up to win, and how living a lie eats at you. My admiration for Tyler is enormous. He shows how hard it seems to be brave and tell the truth, but how much better he felt doing it. I learned a lot about telling lies, power games, and why in the end, its best to be truthful, and why it is the best way to live. Thank you, gentlemen, for a truly enlightening and motivating read. I recommend it from my heart. PS. I too have suffered from depression in my life, and have found the journey back to myself, my truth, is the way to stay real, honest, and live in the moment. That's something I appreciated seeing in Tyler's voyage.

A real look into Pro Cycling. Tyler Hamilton offers an inside view of Pro cycling's culture. It's the good, bad and ugly side of cycling. It is a must read for any cycling enthusiast. You won't put it down until your finished reading. Excellent!

Read This One. If you are into the story of the Us Postal Team and what it takes to compete in Europe, than this book is a must read!!!

Wow !. I climbed Mt Washington twice with Tyler but with much slower times than him ! He is just awesome as a cyclist (doped or not) and a person. I am so glad he has found peace and closure. Long and happy life to you Tyler. The book, well written details a world of horror and subterfuge that is beyond anything i could have ever imagined. He is never vindictive, describes it like I am sure it was. As far as Lance goes, I just don't see how his army of lawyers and PR staff will keep suggesting that he say , " i have never doped and I have been tested more than 500 times "

The real story. If you really want to know what went on behind the scenes at the tour, this is worth a read. Great read!

Truth. This story is the real deal on what goes on in pro cycling. It also confirms what I have always felt about Lance, he is a first class bully and jerk!

Amazing book. Coming from an ex pro cyclist this book was unreal. Read it in 2 days. I think even if you're not s cycling fan you will find this book surreal. Must read.

Rare and exceptional. Part exposé, part confessional. Absorbing, unbelievable, raw and honest. Read it.

The real dope!. Amazing read, be careful though you will want sit and read this entire book in one sitting or over 2 days. Tyler's has made his comeback to cycling! We will welcome you back finally! The truth is horrifying and painful and makes the reader ask what would you do? Simply spectacular!

The Secret Race.... A very interesting and sad account from Tyler Hamilton on the state of pro cycling over the past 20 years. Good read and interesting to read his perspective.

Missing pages in the prologue.. Tomthe autor: there are missing pages at the biginning of the book.

Tyler Hamilton. Great reading, very dark secrets and truths of the cycling world!!

The Secret Race. The most in depth book on doping I have read so far. Very believable. Hamilton has nothing to hide and it shows in the pages

Hamilton delivers a brutally honest insight into secret world of cycling. I found this book to be a fantastic read. Tyler's honesty and insight into the secret world of cycling is both disturbing and intriguing. Human nature us such that we are always looking for a way to get better. This era he rode in was obviously ripe with doping and he was consumed by what seemed to be inevitable. I have read many books about cycling and doping but I found this to be the best of them. You can tell this book is truthful and obviously hard for him to tell this story. I appreciate the honesty and feel we are living in a time where people will forgive and move on. Cycling is different now and you can tell. When guys attack nowadays they do it more like humans (they get tired and have consequences for their attacks ). In the past it was attack after attack and they never seemed to tire. Now Tyler has explained where that ability to push through that state came from. He should be applauded for his honesty and it makes me feel for Floyd Landis who came out earlier and was looked at as a rat, lier as opposed to a truthful person. I think the blame for the doping should be put back onto the organizers of the grand tours. They create these spectacles that are almost impossible for humans to do, yet the public yearns for more. They want longer stages, more attacks, faster speeds, sketchier descents and more crashes. Yet they expect this all to be done with no aid? You tell me how many super athletes in this world could do 21 stages in 23 days with little more than gels, energy bars and gatorade. Even worse, after a stage they are expected to do media interviews etc and then race 12 hours later. Organizers should create shorter stages, safer conditions and possibly a couple less teams. I hope Lance comes clean. What he has done for cycling and moreover for cancer research has been great and people will forgive him. He was the best of the best and playing in the same dangerous game as others and beat them. Times are changing which is fantastic. Thanks to people like Floyd and Tyler that are coming out it is forcing others to admit to their mistakes, which is probably a huge relief. Cycling is one of the most amazing sports in the world to do and watch and I am ecstatic for what the future holds. A cleaner, more human event that everyone can relate to. Jason Binab

The Secret Race. A raw and fantastic look inside the toughest sport in the world.
