Beyond Belief by Jenna Miscavige Hill & Lisa Pulitzer Book Summary

Jenna Miscavige Hill, niece of Church of Scientology leader David Miscavige, was raised as a Scientologist but left the controversial religion in 2005. In Beyond Belief, she shares her true story of life inside the upper ranks of the sect, details her experiences as a member Sea Org—the church's highest ministry, speaks of her "disconnection" from family outside of the organization, and tells the story of her ultimate escape.

Piercing the veil of secrecy that has long shrouded the world of Scientology, this insider reveals unprecedented firsthand knowledge of the religion, its obscure rituals, and its mysterious leader—David Miscavige. From her prolonged separation from her parents as a small child to being indoctrinated to serve the greater good of the Church, from her lack of personal freedoms to the organization's emphasis on celebrity recruitment, Jenna goes behind the scenes of Scientology's oppressive and alienating culture, detailing an environment rooted in control in which the most devoted followers often face the harshest punishments when they fall out of line. Addressing some of the Church's most notorious practices in startling detail, she also describes a childhood of isolation and neglect—a childhood that, painful as it was, prepared her for a tough life in the Church's most devoted order, the Sea Org.

Despite this hardship, it is only when her family approaches dissolution and her world begins to unravel that she is finally able to see the patterns of stifling conformity and psychological control that have ruled her life. Faced with a heartbreaking choice, she mounts a courageous escape, but not before being put through the ultimate test of family, faith, and love. At once captivating and disturbing, Beyond Belief is an eye-opening exploration of the limits of religion and the lengths to which one woman went to break free.

Everything I hoped it would be.. Update 2/5/2013: downloaded and read the entire book last night. as expected, very damaging and told in a straightforward way. go Jenna. Well worth the money spent. Jan 28, 2013: if 33 people have already posted reviews in an attempt to down rate this book when it isn't yet released, you can bet David Miscavige has Scientologists lying in force against this book. Therefore I'm adding my 5 star review just because if it scares Miscavige that much it's gotta be a stupendous book. It is January 28. When the book actually comes out I will post a true review of it. People under Jenna's uncles rule will NOT be allowed to read it, that's why they could post their reviews early.

Very informative. Always knew Scientology was a cult but not to the extent described in the book. God Bless all of you who are detoxing and living in this beautiful world God Created.

Excellent. This was a excellent book. Finally someone tells the truth behind Scientology... How they can call themselves a church is crazy. It is nothing but money and brainwashing..

Incredible. Jenna is smart. She has written an utterly believable book by mostly subsuming her current views on Scientology, simply telling the (appalling, disturbing, riveting) story of her childhood. It would be easy for a book like this to be full of value judgements but, for the most part, she avoids those. She is confident enough in the truth that she doesn't need to point out how obviously crazy and unhealthy this all is. Only at the end does she make her current feelings about the "Church" clear, and by that point, you are simply proud and amazed that she was able to break free. A book that will stay with you and, likely, make you grateful for your own childhood.

What a great book!. I'm truly inspired. For someone to be born into something and eventually realize it's wrong... The courage, the motivation, the magnitude of this decision she chose is extremely powerful. A book worth reading, worth paying for... Thank you Jenna

Beyond Belief. Great Book. I really enjoyed Jenna's story, unbelievable all that she went thru, I wish her a very Happy life. I also enjoyed understanding what this "cult" really is about.I remember year's ago meeting Scientologist's and I alway's thought they were a bit "off" and they were robotic now I know why. Thank-you Jenna

They deserve each other. Wow, this book started out ok but kept getting worse and worse. Jenna is clearly a self-absorbed idiot, which is a perfect fit for Scientology. Take control of your life people it's not that hard.

Amazing story!. I am so glad that this brave young woman had the courage to write her story for the world to see. I could not imagine such an experience.

Get the word out!. Thank you for having the courage to "escape" and get the word out to everyone. Highly recommend!

Beyond belief. Beyond good!

So scary!!. Incredibly interesting!!! Reading of Jenna's life in Scientology gave me a stomach ache it was so scary. The thought that this "church" can pretty much do whatever it want to people under the guise of being a religion was terrifying. As Jenna is brainwashed and manipulated repeatedly you cannot help but want her to escape. When she does escape you are afraid right along with her that the church will drag her back.

Inspiring!. This was a heartfelt, beautifully written memoir of a very tragic childhood. I was a a public student, Div Six Staff & Sea Org, married & divorced in Scientology when the RPF completely transformed Cedars Hospital to the Big Blue Building. I met and played with many kids while I was involved. When I left, it was unpleasant but not nearly as difficult as it is now. What has happened to these kids is heartbreaking. I applaud Jenna's courage in leaving and in speaking out

Awestruck. It is un fathomable that this cult is still alive today ! The atrocities that people have to go thru because they believe they are doing something to make the world a better place amidst their own hell that they aren't even aware of. Families split, forced abortions , in humane practices , mind control and abuse. This book is a must read and more awareness MUST be communicated about this cult !

Excellent. Very interesting read. I had no idea!

An important story told in a dull voice. I am conflicted about rating this book so low, as I appreciate survivors sharing their stories of the abuses suffered at the hands of dangerous cults. This book gave me a greater understanding, possibly the greatest understanding from a single piece of media, of what it means to have grown up in the church of Scientology so far removed from the experiences of public Scientologists. The content is both horrifying and fascinating. However, this book is a slog. The style of writing reminds me of a journal entry you might read from an A student in the fifth grade. There is a childlike tone that is hard to stomach throughout. I would be understanding of this considering the formal education that Jenna Miscavage never received as a child, but the fact that it was co-written by a well respected author docked this book two stars for me. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the minutiae of the cult of Scientology. For a more gripping introduction or overview of the cult, I’d suggest going elsewhere.

Beyond Belief. The title is true. It is beyond belief that this cult exists and is so wealthy.

Eye opening, Must read!. I commend Jenna, Dallas and all of their friends and family for being brave enough to put this book out! I hope it will bring to light and to justice all of the human rights violations done within the Church of Scientology and will help those who need it!

Great book. I always thought this group was more of a cult than a church. Family, is the most important part of any church! The abuse to the children and the families, is crazy! To think that these celebrities, that are suppose to be believers, had no idea this was going on, is ridiculous! I can't believe Jenna came out of this as well as she seems to have. Good luck to you and your family!

Fantastic!. This is a very well written book, it is a first hand account as well as an education on what's really going on in this church. I highly recommend you take time to read this book, worth every minute.

Excellent. Finally a good, inside look at this organization.

Excellent read. Excellent read. Really goes into depth about the Scientology world. Recommend the read to open anyone's eyes about this so called "religion". You have strength and courage Jenna Hill!! Thank you for sharing

Book the refuses to be put down!. Informative, inspirational, emotional, and suspenseful!

Great book. God bless this girl. Scientology is an evil cult that needs to be exposed.

The Truth. The truth hurts that's why this cult is upset at this book. Their con, no their criminal actions are laid bare... About time!

Great book!. I loved reading this story. I found myself in tears more than once. Why does our government who sticks their nose in everything not investigate this so called religious group. This is child neglect, abuse and many more things that should be stopped.

Pjjoy. Great book. Very well written with documentation as to time and people! A true expose regarding a harmful lifestyle! Thanks for sharing!

Incredibly heart rending story and must read. I have had family members who were at one time involved with this evil place, and also close friends who have recently had to do work at one of the major Hollywood buildings where building codes are still being violated today. I can attest to what they witnessed and this goes in depth to the core of the sick organization which is the "church" of Scientology. I am so grateful for the incredible courage of this woman and her associates and family for pulling the curtain off this evil place and exposing them. I hope sincerely they are continually ripped apart in the press and by law enforcement so they never harm another, and they have to give up every ill gotten dime, back to the people they scammed. I also pray that the celebrities who have blindly associated themselves with this cult open their eyes and exit en mass and speak against this disgusting organization who keep people enslaved, with no resources, and mentally and physically abuse and torture even the youngest and most innocent souls. Horrendous and worth reading every word!! Thank you for your courage! B

Finally, the truth. Bravo Jenna for your extraordinary courage in 'outing' Scientology, a criminal organization that dares to call itself a church or religion, when it's only agenda is power, greed and deprivation of human rights on an unconscionable scale. What began as fraud and abuse perpetrated by a narcissistic sociopath, LRH, now being carried on by a napoleonic sociopath, David Miscavige, is nothing short of the perpetration of ongoing crimes against humanity. Note, deluded ones of the cult of Scientology, the world is now even more aware of exactly who you are, and we are watching, eagerly awaiting your inevitable denouement.

Beyond Beliefs. I thought this would be interesting. Saw the author on Anderson Cooper. With the 'mystery' surrounding scientology, all I got was complete boredom. There's nothing juicy n it couldn't hold my interest long enough to even finish it. Refund, please.

Beyond Belief. Most informative & interesting book about a cult that I knew very little about.

GOD!. Jenna, your book is extraordinary in all aspects. Abuse, lying, all the strife you overcame. Please allow me to witness to you that there is a GOD! There is a JESUS! There is afterlife! JESUS came to earth so that we may go to heaven. No, I don't believe in reincarnation, but I do believe that if we accept JESUS as our savior we will go to heaven when we die. Please don't let what happened to you turn you away from the truth. I cannot believe the things those people did to you and then your husband. I know you must hate all religions. But I like to think that I am a passionate follower of Christ. Not a religion! Please read the bible. You are too good to go to hell! You babies are too good. Please just think about it and I will pray for you Jenna ! Thank you for this book so that you are saving lives. Thank you! Teresa K Phillips

Brave. I heard about this book a few months back and finally took the time to read it. Soooo glad I did! A couple of years ago as I was having problems with my teenage son, a friend said I should do a course at his church. After her explained to me what the course was about, I decided to give it a try. My son really liked it. He even said he felt very calm and at ease there, so I paid for another. course. I had another friend who found out that we were doing courses and flipped out demanding that we stop being stupid and get out of there. I protested and said we were just doing courses and not getting involved with the church. They informed me that that was how they "Get You". So I did stop, and they called, emailed, and mailed me nonstop. I finally said take me off whatever list you have. I still get stuff sometimes, and lately have been tempted to check out the courses for my son again since it did seem to help him before. I believe if some of the stuff were allowed to be taught without the crazy religion behind it that is abused, many could benefit from it. The book was a great book from beginning to end. I read it in two days. I am so glad I did. It stopped me from getting started with the courses that will ultimately lead to people trying to get you into their church that abuses others. You are very brave to get out of that crazy mess. I am happy to read you have a happy ending and helping others.

Very courageous. I found Jenna's story to be very informative and terrifying. I'm thankful that she could put that into words. I wasn't so in touch with my feelings from 19-28... I didn't have the courage to say WHAT? When I read those OT materials that I paid lots of $ for, although I was thinking the thoughts that Scientology is truly crazy and I must be for spending $. Over the years I've tried to get only the money back that I had on my account in LA which I never spent. I never got anything back. I consider them thieves too. I gave up trying as I got tired of the harassing phone calls at 2 am in the morning and unexpected visitors at 8am on a Sunday. After 30 some odd years, I'm still being harassed! So, Jenna, thanks for writing this. By the way, I used to be married to your uncle Larry & I babysat Barney and Dallas...

Must read. Everyone should read this book. Scientology is the new Nazi party and the only way to combat such an evil is too be well educated in what's going on.

Glad she got free of that nonsense, but wayyyy too tedious. Wayyyyyyyyyy too much detail. He said , "x" and I said, "y". How in the world would a person remember all the details from dozens/hundreds of conversations over a few decades?

Beyond Belief. At one point Shelly Miscavige tells Jenna she thinks that her troubles are coming from " misunderstood words, specifically from VolZone (whatever number). Who even talks this way? This is so ridiculous it boggles the sane mind. What kind if people can even halfway believe this bull? This cult is so full of lost people. It is very sad.

A Must Read. I couldn't put this book down. I just finished it and I am in complete shock. This is a terrifying story of corruption. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

Fascinating story, bit hard to read. This book gives an utterly believable account of the life story of a Scientology insider. I never thought Scientology was going that far, I always thought they were just a bunch of harmless loonies that believed they came for outer space. Terrifying to see the widespread influence the organization has on most private matters and most importantly family life. This book is stylistically a bit hard to read, Jenna is obviously not a gifted author - but it is worth overlooking technique for this behind the scenes view of Scientology.

Scary. This was the first book I read about Scientology. Congratulations to Jenna for being able to get out and live her own life. After giving up so much for the church, it is sad she was treated so poorly. I hope she inspires more people to think for themselves and leave before it is too late and their kids are subjected to the treatment that she was.

Beyond Belief. Grabbed my attention from the first page and held it to the end. It's appropriately titled because it is hard to believe this cult called Scientology has gotten away with such suppression and abuse for so long.

What a bore. If the book hadn't been filled with mundane facts it might have been an interesting read. I had to flip pages continuously just to get through the book.

Excellent book. A book so shocking and honest the truth about Scientology is a story that needs to be told and known by everyone. Thanks to Jenna and everyone who speaks out about this evil organization.

Beyond Belief. Interesting concept. Very well written and informative belief system. I would like to read more as this is only one person's experience. And not at all what I thought Scientology was supposed to be about. This sure gives me further interest to read. Just glad to see this author escaped such a cult.

Eye-opening. This book was great from the moment I started it. I didn't know much about Scientology except for what I saw on South Park and Jenna has made me feel that I was right there with her. Going through the same things she was. She gave great insight into what Scientology was supposed to be and what it became. Amazing book!!!

A textbook on Scientology would be more fun to read. Here is how boring the writing is "a laundry room was added, completed with a few washers and dryers. At some point the swimming pool was cleaned, patched up, and returned to a usable state, as well". this is a random sentence i pulled from a random page. its all written this way- a boring, dry, recap like a text book. I pushed through this book because this author is unfortunately the only one with insight into Scientology.

This is happening in the USA!. This book needs to wake up America! The celebrities that support this Cult, Shame on You! Tom Cruise needs to sidestep his Ego, and look underneath the layers to truly see what he and other celebrities support. Just sickening to know that this is happening Now in the US. When is the government going to investigate this cult. Good for Jenna to finally be able to tell her story, and live her life. A very informative, touching story.

Very captivating. I had heard so much about Scientology but never quite understood the ins and outs of this organisation. After reading this book, Jenna gave a very clear view of how sick this 'religion' truly is and I admire her for speaking up and warning the rest of the world. The book is well written, very interesting and it makes you keep turning the pages.

Beyond Belief. Great Read!! Opened my eyes to what happens behind closed doors within Scientology! Highly recommend! 👍🏻

Miss S Moore. This was a very well written book, I really enjoyed it and found it an eye opener to a very secret religion. Thanks for being so open and honest about your life and Scientology .

Boring. I persevered for 150 pages, not worth it, too many boring, mundane details.

Amazing book, highly recommend it!. Great story writing, couldn't put it down.

Boring.... A story that should have been interesting was just boring... Repetitive.

Beyond belief. An outstanding read, just incredible. What brainwashing, you showed amazing strength to stay as long as you did. I would recommend this book to everyone, truly amazing.

Enlightened. I two was a Scientologist and joined the Sea Org as an EPF I saw the flaws in it and thank God I listened to my inner voice which said 'Mcfly Mcfly wake up.Mcfly' lol. Thanx Jenna

Beyond Belief. Jenna Hill has written a very comprehensive & revealing account of what she went through while in the grips of the church of scientology. It is a warning to all those who are curious about this religion. All those who have benefited from its teachings & have donated or paid to do the courses will hopefully be open enough to see the other side of how the church is run.Spiritual Knowledge does not come from a church or religion. It comes from going inside & asking God,Source,Christ,Buddha,The Universe or whatever other name you wish to call It for Guidance, then being Still to hear your answers.WHENEVER a religion sets up a way of life that believes there is a Them against us,run away as fast as your legs and Heart will carry you.Love your Self,Feed your Body Mind & Soul with the best you can give it.Then share this Love with all you meet. Thank you again Jenna Hill for your courage to stand up & share this amazing & revealing story. Sincerely SourceWithin

Beyond Belief. What an amazing and informative read. I was absolutely enthralled and captivated by this story. The author's first hand experience brought light to a subject (Scientology) that I knew very little about but had a genuine curiosity. I was appalled by so much of what she recounted yet I was unable to stop reading even though I was truly concerned for what I else I might discover. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who has a social conscience and is a strong advocate of human rights.

Amazing courage. To still have this kind of abuse happening on a grande scale in North America, still astounds me. This book is so well written, and not full of accusations thrown at Scientology. It just states the facts of what happened to one girl and how she felt and experienced these events in her life. As she grew up slowly realizing the unjustness being done to her and the people she loved.

Great make them pay tax like every other business. I have read this book and I hope that these people are put in jail. Any one that think that a near man can make people believe this crap is like a sheep led to death. This jerk Ron is no better then hitler. This so called religion has to be put down now before it gets out of hand. I live in largo and see this goings on and can't believe what is going on in this time and age. I hope it gets crushed. Jack

A brave memoir, compelling read.. What Jenna went through in her life was just so inhumane and shocking, it is a book you just can't put down. Very enlightening how the head of this secretive cult treated his own family. Quite certain the children of their celebrity "poster puppets" don't share her experience. Her bravery for having the inner strength to believe in herself against the odds, share her story, and for walking away from all she had been taught to believe since birth is truly inspirational and transgresses the specificity of leaving Scientology.

Beyond Belief. Thought this was a great book, answering lots questions that I had wondered about. It took great courage to do what Jenna and Dallas did, but in the end the church left them no choice ! You never know how strong and courageous you can be until its your only option. It amazes me to this day how so many ,can be duped into believing in this and many other controlling religions and cults. Never relinquish your free will to anyone or anything!
