My Beloved World by Sonia Sotomayor Book Summary

#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A “searching and emotionally intimate memoir” (The New York Times) told with a candor never before undertaken by a sitting Justice. This “powerful defense of empathy” (The Washington Post) is destined to become a classic of self-invention and self-discovery.

The first Hispanic and third woman appointed to the United States Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor has become an instant American icon.

In this story of human triumph that “hums with hope and exhilaration” (NPR), she recounts her life from a Bronx housing project to the federal bench, a journey that offers an inspiring testament to her own extraordinary determination and the power of believing in oneself.

Here is the story of a precarious childhood, with an alcoholic father (who would die when she was nine) and a devoted but overburdened mother, and of the refuge a little girl took from the turmoil at home with her passionately spirited paternal grandmother. But it was when she was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes that the precocious Sonia recognized she must ultimately depend on herself. She would learn to give herself the insulin shots she needed to survive and soon imagined a path to a different life.

With only television characters for her professional role models, and little understanding of what was involved, she determined to become a lawyer, a dream that would sustain her on an unlikely course, from valedictorian of her high school class to the highest honors at Princeton, Yale Law School, the New York County District Attorney’s office, private practice, and appointment to the Federal District Court before the age of forty.

Along the way we see how she was shaped by her invaluable mentors, a failed marriage, and the modern version of extended family she has created from cherished friends and their children. Through her still-astonished eyes, America’s infinite possibilities are envisioned anew in this warm and honest book.

My Beloved World. This was really great! Ms Sotomayor describes how she came to be a judge and what her life was like. Thru trials and tribulations she always succeeded in everything she put her mind to! Hats off to her! What a great read!!

Larry. Pedantic and childishly written. I feel as though I've wasted part of my life reading this book that's mostly about how affirmative action made her career possible.

Great book. A friend told me this would be a great book for me to read. She was not wrong, if anything she sold it short. I enjoyed reading this book, at times it felt that I was listening to a friend tell me her life story. Sonia sotomayor have earned another fan

My Beloved World. Sonia's book rocks. A touching and beautifully written memoir. Not the complete story yet, because it is still not over. Her legacy has yet to be seen. I look forward to the rest of the story!

Truly inspiring. Rising from a family that surrounded her with love yet being abandoned by the death of an alcoholic father, she fought for everything she believed in and is still trying to improve and build on everything she's learned and accomplished. Truly inspiring. Never say never...

Sonia Sotomayer. Excellent book! Enjoyed reading every page. What a woman!

Well written autobiography. A satisfying look at the personal history of a fine Supreme Court justice. Sotomayor's elegant prose details the importance of family, determination, and hard work in achieving one's goals. Interesting commentaries on things like public vs private law practice and moral philosophy. A worthy memoir.

MY WONDERFUL WORLD. Inspiring, lovely book. I am giving gifts of the book to a number of very bright, mostly African American who when I suggest applying to IVY schools and Stanford never heard of those schools but who deserve to go to them. (My wife & I are Cornell graduates) Thank you Sonia for being you and sharing your story with our book club and so many others.

Too self important, ruins the book for me.. She's in a little bit too much awe of herself for me, ruins what could have been an interesting book, and an interesting story. Yes, she accomplished a lot from humble beginnings, which is the kind of story I love to read about and listen to, but now she talks like everything she says is profound, just because it's her that says it. It makes you feel like she's expecting you to applaud her everytime she pauses. I was looking forward to the book and disappointed when I heard the same self importance I saw on the Daily Show in the audio book. Now I have no interest in the printed or audio version, the self importance is a major turn off.

Inspiring. Reading this book took me back to my own life growing up in the South Bronx in the early '50's. I could not put the book down. The more I read, the more memories of my own family was awakened. The book is easy to read as well as entertaining and educational. How fortunate for Sonia to have a mother who instilled education in her children. A great example for young parents. A must read for all ages.

She wanted to touch the lives of many ans so She did!. Being myself a native puertorican who left the island looking for a better quality of life in America, after reading how Sonia Sotomayor embraces her heritage and her roots, she was able to remind me of the best of my people, my culture and my homeland. Her integrity, honesty and sense of justice definitely makes her a role model for all of us. Her incredible life story is another example that any one can make it in the United States of America as long as you have a clear conviction of who you are, who you want to become and be honest, responsible and work without giving up. This book gives me hope that there will be a better tomorrow as long as we have people like Sonia Sotomayor among us. She is without a doubt a WISE LATINA! ¡Gracias Sonia por hacerme sentir orgulloso de ser BORICUA como usted!

Wonderful and inspiring. A great read.

My Beloved World.. A must read! 5 stars. So much to say yet words cannot describe. So inspiring yet so humble.

Inspiration. A lot of inspiration for the hispanic youth! We can do it!

My beloved world. This is a fabulous book that has brought me to tears, especially concerning her cousin, Nelson. Anyone who has experienced abandonment or familial substance abuse will relate with her story. I feel deep gratitude to her for showing how hard work and introspection can be the basis of a meaningful life and provide such inspiration to people from all walks of life. Martha Germain

My Beloved World. A delightful easy read.

Inspirational. Didn't anticipate how inspired I'd be by Sonia Sotomayor. Amazing accomplishments through adversity: diabetes, an alcoholic father and a "failed" marriage among other things. She always embraced her culture and her roots. Her family relationships were so real, I felt connected to her story the entire time. The ending brought me to tears as she thanked her mother for all she did for her. I definitely recommend it.

My Beloved World. This is a wonderful book which has affected my life, enriching and expanding it. I am recommending it to everyone I can. Sonia S. is so right in that people have a hard time or can't understand how other people think. This book gives insight into the lives of immigrants and the hardships they face. It is also inspiring and instructive in relating her school, societal and career goals and her thoughtful steps taken in achieving them. It tells me we have an intelligent, loving and wise judge on our Supreme Court. How fortunate we are! Alice Broughton ,

My Beloved World. What an inspiring book. Real world life; dreams, aspirations, hard work. A testament to the human spirit and the relevance of "family" however we define it and where ever we are so fortunate to find it.

My Beloved World. Sonia, I barely got out of high school and wanted to be a lawyer. I was a finalist it moot court written and moot court oral. When I took my exams I flunked out. Flunking out of law school was the best thing that ever happened to me. I became very successful in business and really enjoyed your book. What a great book. My life and values are very close to yours and kept thinking that you wrote a book that was like my life, family, friends, values, and the " heart of a lion.. and the eye of the tiger." Had to work seven days a week to pay for my education because my 15 year old sister died when I was 17 and we had no more money. I love all my lawyers but am glad I flunked out because I wouldn't have been good at being a lawyer. Thank you for being you and overcoming all your obstacles. You are an inspiration to all of us. Me being a 5'4" hall of fame football playing nose guard and a Jewish kid who never knew he was small or poor until I was told by my father in law. Warm regards, Richard Salinsky

Moving and Heartfelt. A moving and heartfelt story of Sonia Sotomayor’s improbable rise from the Bronx projects to judge on the US District Court in New York (and eventually the US Supreme Court), and her triumph over much adversity.

My Beloved World. I loved this book! It was an easy read. Engaging and truly inspiring!

My Beloved World. What an incredibly inspiring book!! As an immigrant from Haiti who went to college and law school in the US and had to teach myself to think in English as I learned, I see myself eerily reflected in many of the pages of Justice Sotomayor's book. She is blessed indeed. I hope to use her example and reorder my career in a way that gives it more purpose. I look forward to her second book. I want to learn more about her! I wish I could meet her. She is so full of life -- a true island person. Joconde

My Beloved World. This was an interesting read. Hard to put down. What an insight to such a blessed and enriched life! Justice Sotomayor inspires me! What can she do for the young impressionable youngsters who are living out her younger years with no role models!

Loved this book. I really enjoyed this book. I appreciated her honesty and her perspective. It was relatable and inspirational.

Excellent memoir!. Justice Sotomayor impresses with her humility, candor, intelligence, and keen self-insights. It is an absorbing read. Highly recommended!

Truly Inspirational. As I read this book I thought, this should be required reading for students as early as the 8th grade. Not only is it a lesson on the civil rights movement, it offers guidance and strategy towards achieving your goals. I was touched by her insight and candor. Reading it was such an enriching experience. I loved it. I have recommended to everyone!

My Beloved World. Bk review This book is a gift to all who read it...wrapped in real life experiences; providing a roller coaster of emotions from deep sadness to moments of great joy; offering inspiration and lessons on what can be achieved through determination, persistence, a respect for learning and a desire to be the best one can be not only for herself but for her beloved world while crediting those people who helped to shape the person she has become with much gratitude and humility.

My Beloved World. This book was so good and relatable to by me as not only a Hispanic but mainly as a woman. It tells a tale of family, endurance, trials & triumph.

My Beloved World by Sonia Sotomayor. A beautiful and very personal memoir of a remarkable woman who has lived a complex life that many of us can only fantasize about being brave, hard-working and intelligent enough to undertake. Most moving of all is her portrait of her mother- told with compassion and love.toemerge as the parent Justce Sotomayor

My Beloved World. This is an inspiring story of amazing accomplishments by someone who emerged from an improbably hard-scrabble upbringing. Here is a modern version of the story of Lincoln and his log cabin origins.

My beloved. Wonderful and inspiring. Considering her beginning, it is remarkable to have achieved all that she did. And probably will in the future. I loved the book.

My beloved world. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Sonia's book inspires women especially Latina women to follow their dreams and work hard to achieve those dreams. Knowing her struggles with her father's alcoholism and diabetes makes me admire her more. I recommend this book to anyone who has any aspirations to study law for the sake of making a difference.

Very interesting book. I read the hardcover book and I must say this is one of the best books I have read in my life. This book inspires me and Sonia is very humble and very grateful.

Inspriational. just a girl from the Bronx…who knew?

My Beloved World. This book is warm and wonderful. A study in what makes a person who they are. Sonia Sotomayor learned every day of her life, reflected, reevaluated and moved on. A beautiful person, a genuine good and caring person. A shining star so deserving of the stature she has attained.

My Beloved World. Wow! What a beautifully written and inspiring book. I could not put it down!

My Beloved World. I am so glad I read this book about the struggles many children have and still become successful. One of our own Latina sisters transcended through so much. She was nominated and now fills one of the highest positions in our blessed country. As I read thru the pages I could feel all that Sonia was conveying to the reader. I could totally relate to her determined spirit and I thank God for people whom she met that truly gave her wise and unselfish advice. The prophetic statements about her future are beyond our comprehension, but I truly believe that certain people come to this world for a very specific reason... I am proud of our Latin roots and i truly enjoyed getting to know one of our Supreme Court Justices of the United States of America...via print.....ebook...

My Beloved World. I smiled at the pictures painted by the words, and was moved to tears by this woman's humility at her most triumphant moments. Her portrayal of the healing and reconciliation of her complicated relationship with her mother is an example that many of us whose mothers have passed on can only imagine. As a childless, professional woman who was single for nearly 25 years, I can relate to her need to maintain the family bonds she had, as well as embrace others as a chosen family. She has not only translated her particular story of her Puerto Rican roots to one that is understandable and admired, but she has also translated for others what it was like to be a career woman at a time when we could not "have it all." Thank you, Sonia Sotomayor! Mary Ann Young, Miami, Florida

Inspiring and heartwarming. This well-written book was inspiring and satisfying from beginning to end. I was awed at the degree to which someone in such a role in our society would lay themselves bare, and honored by the opportunity to be witness to such truth. She clearly achieved her stated goals for the book, while remaining true to her own personality. I feel as though I have come to know her deeply, as one would a friend known over a long time, so unstintingly has she revealed herself and her history.
