Flying with Objective-C - iOS App Development for Non-Programmers by Kevin J McNeish Book Summary

Updated to the Latest Versions of iOS and Xcode
All books in this series are updated to the latest version of iOS and Xcode. Updates are available free of charge!

Review:
Most of the books I scanned, even the “Dummies” series, assumed a basic knowledge of computer programming even for iOS beginners. What I like about Kevin’s writing is that he doesn’t make any assumptions – he just takes you there – step by step. - Lorraine Akemann, moms with apps

This second book in the series from Kevin McNeish, winner of the Publishing Innovation Award, highly acclaimed iOS trainer and conference speaker, and award-winning App Developer, is specifically designed to teach non-programmers Objective-C; the language used to create Apps for the iPhone and iPad. This book series assumes you know nothing about programming.

Book 2: Flying with Objective-C builds on what you learned in Book 1: Diving In. In the first two chapters, the author helps you understand basic concepts, such as "what is a class?" and "what is an object?" You then learn how to pass messages to objects, and then create your own custom classes.

As you go through the book, concepts become more advanced until you reach the final chapters on Advanced-Objective-C and Advanced Messaging. Each concept is accompanied by step-by-step instructions to build an App that shows the real-world use of Objective-C programming features. This is a tremendous aid in helping non-programmers grasp even more advanced concepts.

The information in this book is up to date with the latest iOS technologies and the latest version of Xcode!

Includes Step-by-Step Instructional Videos!
Each exercise in this book has a corresponding movie that demonstrates how to perform the exercise. After trying to solve the exercise on your own, just tap the movie to watch the exercise solved for you in high quality video and narrative!

The best for learning objective C. I searched a lot to find a book or course to learning Xcode and these series of books are the best one I found. Without a doubt!

So helpful. I have struggled for months trying to understand Objective-C, and this book has made it so easy to understand.

Fantastic Coverage of Objective-C!. I have been trying to learn Objective-C for over a year now and have tried the Dummies and Big Nerd Ranch books with no success. I decided to give this book a try and I am excited to FINALLY understand Objective-C! The explanations are at exactly the right level for a non-programmer. The videos at the end of each chapter show you how to solve each of the exercises and are an incredible aid in fully understanding all of the information in each chapter. I can't wait to get Book 3!

Easy to Learn Objective C!. I really like Kevin's teachings in this book! He's given a whole knew take on learning in an easy to understand and unique teaching approach to understanding Apple's native computer language, Objective C, for building apps. This iBook is a must have! Start learning Objective C the way it was meant to be taught. Thanks Kevin.

Great Objective-C book for beginners. Contains great examples and easy to understand writing style. Fully explains each topic in concise & coherent way without confusing or leaving gaps for the reader to fill in on their own. Great understanding of what a beginner needs to know, along with giving additional background information to help their learning process. He doesn't lose focus of the non-programmer's perspective and doesn't assume they have knowledge of other OO languages.

Really Great Beginner's Objective-C Book!. I have been studying Objective-C now for a while and I have many books on the subject, but none go into such details as this book does, in explaining difficult concepts in simple terms … and there are examples & videos to further help. This is a great beginners book on Objective-C that can be used later as a reference to go back to when studying the more advanced subjects. We are really lucky that the author took the time and effort to develop this series of easy to understand books!

Simply the Best way for Beginners to Learn Objective-C. I'm a hardware / IT guy not a developer but I've always wanted to code my own projects. Fresh off of creating my first prototype application in record time from Book 1 I delved into Book 2. While this book covers the deeper topic of Objective C it does so with the same simple easy to understand style of the first book. Simply no better book exists for a beginner to learn to program in Objective C.

Amazing. Amazing

Best Book on Objective-C. I have read many books on Objective-C and nobody explains it as clearly as Kevin McNeish. His examples work, the topics are clear and build on each other and each one increases your understanding of the subject. Kevin is an excellent teacher. This book costs more in iBooks than for the Kindle, but the difference in layout is worth the extra few dollars. Kevin obviously put a lot of effort into creating a book that combines form and function.

More inspiration to succeed!. This is another brilliant publication, and follows on with the same approach as book 1 in this series. The author takes advantage of the interactive features of the authoring tool, and provides the reader with easy-to-understand. Prior to this series I could only ever aspire to learn to programme iOS applications, these books actually give me the motivation, capabilities, and tools to make it happen. I highly recommend these for both the absolute beginner, and the seasoned programmer. Having read book 1 and 2, I am looking forward to the updated versions for iOS7, especially book 3.

Inspired to build something great!. If like me you are typical of a large proportion of people looking to start building iOS apps (intelligent, computer literate but zero prior programming experience) this finally is the book for you! After a couple of months reading other so called "beginners" books my learning progress was slow and frustrating. I longed to find a book that didn't carry the prerequisite "basic understanding of the C language assumed"..where was the course for the complete beginner? Then I found the iOS App Development for Non-Programmers series and I'm pleased to say it does exactly what it says on the tin! Learning is broken down into bite sized chunks. Hard to grasp concepts are broken down, stripped back and explained alongside visuals in a way that ensures the reader understands the building blocks of Objective-C as opposed to simply memorising or copying chunks of code from the text. I found myself getting increasing excited as I worked my way through the book and pieces of the programming jigsaw started to fit together in my mind. Armed with my new Objective-C tools it seems the only thing that can stop me building world class apps is my imagination. As I work my way now through book 3 in the series there will be a host of further concepts and frameworks to master but that no longer scares me, it excites me…bring it on, I've got the fundamentals grasped! It should also be noted just how much this book is enhanced thanks to the use of iBooks Author. HD graphics, colour coding, note taking and embedded demonstration videos throughout make this a truly interactive experience. Another down side I have found to traditional books on Objective-C and Xcode is they inevitably are out of date but the time they are published due to the fast changing world of Apple updates. The iBook version of Flying with Objective- C has been updated when Xcode has so you are always on top of the latest functionality and syntax. Don't underestimate the importance of updates. Not only does this ensure you can utilise the full power of the iOS, each change to syntax introduced by Apple inevitably seems to be a change that makes things easier for developers. Being upto date makes it that little bit easier to learn. Truly a book that keeps on giving. In summary a must for the budding developer. If this doesn't inspire you to build something truly great for iOS nothing will…

Excellent follow on to book 1. Following on from book 1, I was eager to see how this book dealt with Objective-C. I’ve been a developer for many years, concentrating on .Net for the last few. Until this book I could never understand how Objective-C worked and got particularly frustrated with myself after reading other books because I wasn't getting it. This book just as the title says only deals with Objective-C. It does it by using sample code that you download and the book describes different parts of Objective-C by getting you to modify the samples. I cant wait for book 3 and finally see how everything I’ve learned from the first two fits together to produce working apps. As I said in my review of book 1, as this book was written with iBooks Author its a really nice interactive book, and don’t pay to much attention to the word “Non-Programmer” in the title.

Great Book. The objective-c development book is great for beginners trying to get programming in their head.
