The Son by Philipp Meyer Book Summary

Soon to be a TV Series on AMC starring Pierce Brosnan and co-written by Philipp Meyer.

Now in paperback, the critically acclaimed, New York Times bestselling epic, a saga of land, blood, and power that follows the rise of one unforgettable Texas family from the Comanche raids of the 1800s to the oil booms of the 20th century.

Part epic of Texas, part classic coming-of-age story, part unflinching examination of the bloody price of power, The Son is a gripping and utterly transporting novel that maps the legacy of violence in the American west with rare emotional acuity, even as it presents an intimate portrait of one family across two centuries.

Eli McCullough is just twelve-years-old when a marauding band of Comanche storm his Texas homestead and brutally murder his mother and sister, taking him as a captive. Despite their torture and cruelty, Eli--against all odds--adapts to life with the Comanche, learning their ways, their language, taking on a new name, finding a place as the adopted son of the chief of the band, and fighting their wars against not only other Indians, but white men, too-complicating his sense of loyalty, his promised vengeance, and his very understanding of self. But when disease, starvation, and westward expansion finally decimate the Comanche, Eli is left alone in a world in which he belongs nowhere, neither white nor Indian, civilized or fully wild.

Deftly interweaving Eli’s story with those of his son, Peter, and his great-granddaughter, JA, The Son deftly explores the legacy of Eli’s ruthlessness, his drive to power, and his life-long status as an outsider, even as the McCullough family rises to become one of the richest in Texas, a ranching-and-oil dynasty of unsurpassed wealth and privilege.

Harrowing, panoramic, and deeply evocative, The Son is a fully realized masterwork in the greatest tradition of the American canon-an unforgettable novel that combines the narrative prowess of Larry McMurtry with the knife edge sharpness of Cormac McCarthy.

The Son. Fantastic reading! The book is as good as Lonesome Dove which is the high mark for any book to me.

Sublime. It takes some effort to settle in to the three character point of view but ultimately proves worth it. I hate to admit it but I to couldn't help but compadre this to 'Lonesome Dove' as I kept turning pages. I normally don't partake in too much fiction but am so glad I did in this case. A true treasure for any fan of Texana. Author probably owes some debt to S.G Gwynne, or maybe it is the other way around.

History condensed. This book includes a lot of history of Texas and the American west, condensed until it is confusing. The character of Eli McCullough was developed and his youth explained, but a lot left out between his kidnapping and becoming a cattle baron. Switching from one character in one generation to another in a different generation was confusing. I finished the book because I hate to buy a book and not finish it, otherwise I would have stopped reading after three chapters.

The Son. My adult son recommended this book to me; we share books back & forth; I highly recommend it as well.

The Son. A waste of my time.

Mesmerizing. Took a bit to get into the groove of the flash back and forward. Then I Couldn't put it down.

Pointless. Don't waste your time. Nothing positive or new or interesting. Man's inhumanity to man.

The Son. This family saga about Texas from the early frontier to current day takes a cynical view to say the least.. Everyone in three generations is miserable and then they die. The only time they seem to thrive is when they are making money(or scalping someone). The author must have some true dislike for anything Texas! In spite of all this I could not put it down until I finished it. Still not sure of the point!

The Son. Wonderful book. Beautifully descriptive of Comanche life and culture. The saga of multiple generations was, at first, a little difficult to follow, but became easier as the story continued. One of the best books I have read in many years.

The Son. Intuitive and entraining. The jumping from one storyline to another made it flow a bit awkwardly. Taking the joy out of reading it in segments . I should have read it in one sitting.

Not like tv series. The genealogy changed in the tv series, which made the book more enjoyable. Interesting story, loved the history!

The Son. Excellent read, as I was reading I felt I was in old Texas.

Almost, but not quite. The writing style is forceful and carries the reader along beautifully until suddenly--it doesn't. Several hundred pages into the book the three generations structure with three different protagonists just stops working. The only character who is truly genuine and sustains interest is the patriarch, and I began to skip whole sections concerning the son and granddaughter. Felt like the book should have been over long before it was. (Interesting that the author weaves in a side detour to take a little dig at Edna Ferber for her poor writing and false portrayal of Texas in Giant.) Overall, worth the read but don't expect a Lonesome Dove-style ripping good yarn about the Old West.

The Son. Unique way of revealing a family’s story . Engrossing. Texas story / Texas history. Worth every minute of reading.

Remarkable. Really great book. Eli is the best character is a western since Gus McCray in Lonesome Dove. This book compares very favorably thereto.

The Son. Great book, seems like they should incorporate more of the book into the television series. Lots of details overlooked in the first season. Devils in the detail, explain the Madeline/Lipon connection. Also expand on his Ranger experience would be good too. Overall an awesome read.

The Son. A little disconcerting at first as the story jumped around from Eli to Jeannie, J.W. but it all came together toward the end. A great story with great character insight and historical terms and references. An interesting perspective from the captive Comanche warrior. In a league with Lonesome Dove.

Enjoyable but.... In general, I enjoyed the book. However, I think the author has read more novels/stories about Texas than actual history about Texas.

Extraordinary. Truly one of the great novels of the year. A cross between Lonesome Dove, Giant and Dallas. Transports you to another time and and place. Meyer is a remarkable writer. The writing is so personal and vivid that you literally embody his characters and feel their triumphs and tragedies.

The Son. Hard to read. Disjointed. Character's stories separated in time. Depressing. No Good Guys. Non the less, different view point on the history of Texas.

Good book. Thanks

Bookworm. Wonderful story that covers generations. I loved how the author began with the Wild West and interwove the story to modern times examining family dynamics, and how the bonds of family and loyalty can be questioned. Had a hard time putting it down.

Amazing book. Sweeping in scope, this brilliantly-written epic will stay with you long after you're finished. Imagine Cormac McCarthy's take on GIANT.

Not a page turner. Very disappointed. I enjoyed the beginning of the book, even enjoyed reading the book from the three different perspectives of each generation. Towards the middle of the book, it became a little boring, but I wanted to finish and figured the end would be worth it. After sooooo much building up of history and characters, the end was seriously lacking.

The Son. What a let down. Telling this story from the viewpoint of three central characters should have given the reader a comprehensive understanding of the family history. Instead, the character development was flat, disjointed and uninteresting. A wasted opportunity to tell a good historical tale of human need, greed, determination, survival and family relationships.

The Son. BEST BOOK EVER!!

The Son. If you could shuffle the chapters of six books like a deck of cards you would end up with a book like this. Distractingly frustrating to sort out.
