Vietnam: A Soldier's Journal by Jack Durish Book Summary

Vietnam: A Soldier's Journal by Jack Durish is a personal memoir of the author's tour of duty in Vietnam during the war that tore America's heart in half. It is a tale of his adventures and misadventures while serving in the rear echelons of the 9th Infantry Division. This telling of the Vietnam story is not politically correct, just true.

Perspective Is Everything. Jack Durish may not have been sent to Vietnam in an active combat capacity, but his role as a rear echelon soldier during the war provides the reader with a very credible vantage point from which the reader can witness what occurred there. Durish adds his own observations and opinions that, while controversial, are quite honest. He supports his positions with facts. I was especially impressed with the author's exposure of the anti-war movement. Having grown up during the Vietnam War, I strongly opposed our presence there, but because I was still in my youth, I didn't fully understand why. Durish explains why we needed to oppose the North Vietnamese communists in a way that has never previously been presented to me.

Brilliant. Written with a very objective point of view. Author seemed very informed of th political as well as th military objectives/environment of both sides. Too bad he wasn't in control bak then. Haha Hindsight is 20/20

Really. no needā€¦ā€¦ā€¦.how did this get publishedā€¦rambling..om and on and onā€¦...

Interesting look from the "back lines". Always wondered about the duties and workings of the countless soldiers taking on the duties of supply, clerical, and other operations of war not in the spotlight of battle. Seems to be a thankless task of great importance for the success of any fighting force. Author also explains historically the reasons behind our wars and how they seem to tie together not taught though normal history. Good read!

Strange. It's a bit of a strange book. 'A soldier's journal' turns out to be a story told from a non-combat view. I expected it to be about the Vietnam war but was more about record keeping in a busy office. Covering sending letters to the families of soldiers killed in action to how to keep a typewriter working in high humidity. There is also a lot of repeating where the writer tells us something that he repeats later, sometimes using exactly the same text. If you're looking for a war story this isn't it. Try Matterhorn by Karl Marlantes

Dire-donā€™t bother. Pretty poor book by a very opinionated rear echelon member of the army, not a combat soldier. Donā€™t bother with this book. Read one by a proper combat soldier.

Ok. Just expect more combat stories

Worth reading. Quite an enjoyable read

Jack Durish A soldiers story. I found this book to be quite interesting if somewhat a little slow at the beginning, but in the end well worth the read!!
