Abaddon's Gate by James S. A. Corey Book Summary

The third book in the NYT bestselling Expanse series, Abaddon's Gate opens the door to the ruins of an alien gate network, and the crew of the Rocinante may hold the key to unlocking its secrets. Now a Prime Original series.

HUGO AWARD WINNER FOR BEST SERIES

For generations, the solar system -- Mars, the Moon, the Asteroid Belt -- was humanity's great frontier. Until now. The alien artifact working through its program under the clouds of Venus has appeared in Uranus's orbit, where it has built a massive gate that leads to a starless dark.

Jim Holden and the crew of the Rocinante are part of a vast flotilla of scientific and military ships going out to examine the artifact. But behind the scenes, a complex plot is unfolding, with the destruction of Holden at its core. As the emissaries of the human race try to find whether the gate is an opportunity or a threat, the greatest danger is the one they brought with them.

Abaddon's Gate is a breakneck science fiction adventure following the critically acclaimed Caliban's War.

Awesome. Awesome

Don’t get: missing pages and some are duplicated. Pages are missing, and some are duplicated!

Great book. The beginning to the middle was good but I wanted more out of the ending.

Not about the Despoiler. I wanted to read about the Black Legion but I got this crap don’t get

Did the authors even talk to each other?. Naomi’s shoulder is injured, bones fractured. Hours (maybe a day) later she’s able to accept a friendly shoulder pat on her opposite arm. Ok, I can suspend disbelief for magic space medicine, this seems just fine, even though I know in the now-times the amount of damage described would make this unbearable unless you were drugged past lucidity. Hours after that she’s unable to walk comfortably in low gravity with injured arm and shoulder fully bound, indicating she shouldn’t have been able to accept that shoulder pat. Of course, a chapter later, she’s hip deep inside confined spaces overriding ship functions. How⁉︎ If you like lots of inconsistencies across chapters, and books, this is a series for you.

Good until about half way.... ...after which characters start having incomprehensible behavioral changes and it just becomes a grind. Anna is impossibly forgiving and becomes a caricature whose existence is forced into the story line. Clarissa ceases to behave like a human at all and her presence is just jarring as a result - it is immediately apparent that this ridiculous and unbelievable change of behavior occurs only to keep her around for the denouement. Holden becomes inexplicably averse to violence against Ashford for no apparent reason at the exact moment that the fight against Ashford has helped plan is about to start, and then we get the telltale of bad writing in any genre - inner monologue from characters starts using the word "testosterone". Give this one a pass and rad something by Iain Banks instead.

Many Confusing Elements. This review was first published on Kurt's Frontier. Winner of the 2014 Locus Science Fiction Award Synopsis: Humanity’s great frontier was its own solar system for centuries. An alien artifact has been working through its program under the clouds of Venus. Now it is orbiting Uranus where it has constructed a gate that leads out into the broader universe. Jim Holden has been up against this artifact before. He hopes to have nothing more to do with it this time, but a complex plot unfolds that places his ship, the Rocinate, into a fleet of scientific and military ships. The big question is whether the gate is a threat or an opportunity. However, the greater danger is the one they brought with them. Review: This is the third book of James S. A. Corey’s The Expanse series. (Note, I haven’t read the others.) The story revolves around Jim Holden, Captain of the Rocinate; Bull, the security officer of Behmouth, a multi-generation ship re-purposed as a warship; Clarissa, a young woman who has sworn to kill Holden and all he cares about; and Annushka Volovodov, a pastor and a spiritual advisor to the fleet. There is also a ghost called Miller that tends to be cryptic. The concepts of the story were interesting. However, many elements were confusing, perhaps because I started with book three. I found bouncing between the four viewpoints a bit jarring. Still, the story was entertaining. The exploration of interplanetary travel was interesting.

They’ve done it again.. A continuation of modern epic masterpiece. Fantastic installment of the series and probably my favorite so far. Thought the ending was tremendous and set up for more to come. Can’t wait!

Decent Read. Ok read

The Exciting Third Volume of The Expanse. With Abbadon's Gate we have the continuation of the Expanse Series into new areas! Like in previous entries, we have the core characters of Captain Holden and his crew, but new and fascinating characters of many types are introduced and play significant roles in the story. I particularly liked Anna the Minister and Bull the hard shelled security chief. The story starts off with the proto-molecule picking up and leaving Venus to travel to the outer solar system. Once there, it forms a large circular structure. The various factions of humanity, Earth, Mars, and the Outer Planets determine this ring structure must be investigated. Of course, they can't trust each other so they must all send their own ships. Captain Holden and his crew get hired to go along. The fun really starts when they arrive! There are some themes that run through this work. Making bad choices and having to suffer the consequences of those and those of others is one concept. More hopefully, there is the theme of regret and ultimately redemption. These take the story in unexpected and interesting directions

Right Up There!. This series has integrity both at the broad and intimate levels like, for example, the Ringworld series. My grateful and sincere compliments to the authors.

Solid conclusion. A fitting end to an epic sci-fi series. Fans of The Expanse won't be disappointed.

Slow start, Fast finish. This was quite a slow burn for the first half of the book. Lots of time spent setting things up. However I couldn’t put it down towards the last third. Very satisfying and great setup for the next one.

Abaddon’s Gate. Best read of the series so far. Bull is a great addition. BELTALOWDA!

delete melba delete anna. i don’t care about this stupid redemption narrative of copy/paste chore boy characters. both of them are weak plot vehicles the likes of which i expect to see on crappy network TV. i love everything about this story, this world, and the characters. expect melba and anna. they’re an insult. this book sucked because of them and i skipped about 100 pages because i could not get them out of my life quick enough.
