Dark Witch by Nora Roberts Book Summary

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts comes a trilogy about the land we’re drawn to, the family we learn to cherish, and the people we long to love…

Book One of The Cousins O’Dwyer Trilogy
Dark Witch

With indifferent parents, Iona Sheehan grew up craving devotion and acceptance. From her maternal grandmother, she learned where to find both: a land of lush forests, dazzling lakes, and centuries-old legends.

Ireland. County Mayo, to be exact. Where her ancestors’ blood and magic have flowed through generations—and where her destiny awaits.

Iona arrives in Ireland with nothing but her Nan’s directions, an unfailingly optimistic attitude, and an innate talent with horses. Not far from the luxurious castle where she is spending a week, she finds her cousins, Branna and Connor O’Dwyer. And since family is family, they invite her into their home and their lives. When Iona lands a job at the local stables, she meets the owner, Boyle McGrath. Cowboy, pirate, wild tribal horsemen, he’s three of her biggest fantasy weaknesses all in one big, bold package.

Iona realizes that here she can make a home for herself—and live her life as she wants, even if that means falling head over heels for Boyle. But nothing is as it seems. An ancient evil has wound its way around Iona’s family tree and must be defeated. Family and friends will fight with each other and for each other to keep the promise of hope—and love—alive…

“Dark Witch,” Book One of the Cousins O’Dwyer Trilogy by Nora Roberts. I love this book and recommend to all who enjoy well written mystery romance with a little Magick thrown in. The following quote from Dark Witch, gives us the keys to solve the mystery in Book One, Two and Three. “Sorcha shook her head as Brannaugh started toward her. ‘Not yet. Magick is work. It gives, and it takes. It must be finished.’ She reached in the cauldron, drew out three copper amulets. ‘To Brannaugh the hound, to Eamon the hawk, to Teagan the horse.’ She slipped an amulet over each child’s head. ‘These are your signs and your shields. ….’” (Dark Witch, copyright 2013 Nora Roberts, written by Nora Roberts pages 14 and 15 published by The Berkley Publishing Group). The modern story begins with Iona Sheehan. She's from Baltimore, Maryland but never felt a part of that place and time. All of her life she’s heard stories about Ireland from her maternal Grandmother, Nan, and longed to go to County Mayo to live and work. Iona sells all that she has to fund the trip that will begin her new life in Ireland. She’s in search of her destiny. Relying on a map from her Nan, her first stop is to find the Dark Witch, Branna, her cousin. Branna gives her a place to live and knows of a stable where Iona may be able to find work. Iona meets Alaster, the wild stallion, at the stable where she gets a job as stable hand. Alaster is destined to be Iona’s protector. He is a magnificent animal beautiful in how he yields to Iona’s will. Boyle McGrath, her new boss, is a force to be reckoned with, big and tough, will he be Iona’s destiny as well? Dark Witch is a mystery full of adventure, intrigue and the bonds of family both those formed by birth or by will. The descriptive scenery, witty dialog and well written story bring Iona and her quest to life. The plot is steadily building throughout the book and comes to fruition at the end. The story doesn't end there though, for the next cousin must fight the evil that is even now restoring itself to full strength. The saga to follow your destiny to overcome evil continues with Shadow Spell Book Two of the Cousins O’Dwyer Trilogy, by Nora Roberts, due for release on March 25, 2014.

Roberts Magic. Another excellent novel by Nora Roberts. The trilogy is magnificent. Don’t miss out on 3 magical reads.

Regurgitated Trilogy - Nothing New Here!. I love Nora Roberts but enough of the same ole same ole! This is Three Sisters - different names, different location. I quit buying Danielle Steel for the same reason. I guess when you're turning out books like Roberts, there's nothing new under the sun. The same with the Key and Bride trilogies; they're so predictable. I was so hoping Dark Witch was going to be different. Roberts/Robb has gone from being a really good author to becoming a brand; albeit not a very good one. However, unlike other commercial brands, I can't get my money back!!!

NOBODY DOES WITCHES BETTER!!!. So lovely to see Nora come back to her trilogies and her beautiful Irish witches. I missed them along with the lovely world of magick she creates in them. And I've also been spoiled in that I've had the luxury of reading most of her trilogies straight through... So a year till the next book... Really?

Thrilling!. I got the dark witch when it first came out and didn't read it! When the next one came out, got it too! Didn't read it! Now the last one is out so I just finished the dark witch and I am so excited to read the next! I love it!

Dark witch. It was different content book for me. It did enjoy it a lot.

Imagine My Surprise.... ...when I found that this latest Nora Roberts did not immediately capture my attention. In fact, I found myself thinking I'd read-or she'd written-the story before. Ancient battle between good and evil transported to the present, with modern-day love stories mixed in? Definite retread. I eventually grew to enjoy the characters, although even there I felt not only classic Nora writing but, dare I say it?, formulaic prose. I love stories set in Ireland, but this felt too travelogue-ish. The highlight of the book was Iona and her willingness to be vulnerable. Will I download the successive books? Sure. I still want to know what happens to the characters and the bad guy. Will I grumble about the issues? Probably.

Blah. Had I not read her books previously I would probably give it 3 1/2 starts, but this book was just giving up! Boyle!--besides his name, his personality and character as the hero was so boring and unnecessary to the whole story it was unbelievable. For that matter, so was Iona. Roberts tried something a bit new with the nerdy style personality that can't shut up, the naive imp if you will, but overall there just wasn't anything to root for in this book. The seductive Cabhan wasn't nearly as terrifying or seductive as he should've been (though he was certainly sexier than the hero, Boyle) and, yet again, Roberts's trilogy will build to Book 3 where we're all invested in Fin and the cousin's relationship and the big bad will finally look bad. Read the 3 Sister's Trilogy for a better run at this story and still keeping the paranormal aspects, or the Blood Brother's trilogy. This book lacked character, action, paranormal elements, and romance. A snooze fest to be sure. I don't have a problem with her cashing in on the market, and she started the whole series and trilogy thing long before Shades of Grey and other erotic/ romance writer's picked up on it, but at least in the past Roberts always gave each character a story worth the reader's time but lately, and especially in this book, it's so obvious the story lies in book 3 with Fin and the cousin and the rest is filler.

Spellbinding!. A real page turner! I loved it, can't wait to read the next book in the series!

Great read overall. Nora Roberts tells an interesting, entertaining story here, managing to make me hear the Irish brogue and figures of speech as though I was hearing it in person yet keeping it easy to read. I felt like I was actually there, which was fun. The story was tight and suspenseful, the characters interesting and very individual. I'd give it five stars if she hadn't started with backstory. I couldn't get involved with the main characters for too long and actually walked away from buying the book twice because of that, even though I'm a NR fan. Hang in there, though. Once you get to Chapter 2 you'll take off and enjoy the flight. Either that or start with Chapter 2 and come back to read the backstory when/if you need it.

Here we go!!. I am a huge fan of Nora Robberts. But let me say this book, oh this book!! Beautiful descriptions, details and characters. Ireland is described like a dream! I love Iona and Boyle she's so light and he's so rough. Ugh! Nora Robberts you got me hooked again!!!! :))

Absolutely lovely!. Nora proves once more she's capable of surprising her readers with a new story with good, workable plot and some old twists yet again!

Transports you!. This book, like so many of Nora Roberts’, transports you to a land of magic and characters with hidden depths. This book was beautifully written and will spark your love for travel and anyone who seeks adventure. A must read.

Loved it!. Wonderful story of friendship, family, and love! These are wonderful characters.

Dark Witch. Appsolultly LOVED, LOVED this book! Couldn't put it down! Now mad it's over and I have to wait until May for the next! Worth every penny!

Dark witch. Written to a overused formula. Same story different characters. Very disappointing.

Nora Roberts does no wrong. I literally just picked this one out bc of who wrote it and yet again she doesn’t disappoint. Just bought the second book and can’t wait to get to the third.

Dark Witch. So good!!!!!!Another can’t put down read!!! Series is delicious!

Dark witch. Very Good book well written looking forward to the next book

Another great read from Nora Roberts.. I really love the trilogies, You can count on more to come about these enchanting characters and interesting story. looking forward to spring!

Dark witch. Great book can't wait for the next one in series

I absolutely loved it!. I have been a long-time Nora Roberts fan and I loved her early trilogies which incorporated the battles against good and evil and I thoroughly enjoyed this one as well. I found the characters to be well developed and the storyline was excellent. I personally can not wait until the next one is available. Great read!

Boring. Boring, repetitive, protagonist is like an eight year old. I wouldn't read the rest of the series and it amazes me that anyone can give this a positive review

Good. This book was like three sisters trilogy and signs of seven trilogy combined.. Not a bad book just not the best of hers I've read. I will read the next one.

Awesome once again!. I wait on pins and needles for these trilogy's! This one did not disappoint! I can't wait for the next book! Thank you for another great book with two more to come I'm sure!

Very goid. Some parts get a tad confusing, but overall, it was a wonderful book. Can’t wait to read part 2

So Good!. Nora Roberts never disappoints! Can't wait for the second book in this trilogy to be released.

Better than the last trilogy. I was very upset after reading the innsboro trilogy cause I felt it was just NR trying to cash in even more on her other enterprises. Since this wasn't that I was a bit happier. But yes it's basically a rewrite of a lot of her last trilogies. My favorite trilogy is the morrigans cross one and this follows it enough for me to enjoy it superficially. I did appreciate that Iona was a bit more aggressive in personality. A lot of NR's first characters are little weak women who come into the picture to be saved like Jude in the gallehgars. But for the most part the characters you've seen before (Conner is just Larkin without the ability to shape shift). I'll read the others cause I so enjoy the familial element of her books but if you are looking for something new or fresh best leave this one alone.

Dark witch. Intriguing, mind boggling

Mrs.. I love it when she goes back to Ireland and trilogies. I have been waiting for her to do something fun and witchy for a while. Great read. .

Disappointing. If you've read "three sisters island" and the "Morrigans cross" series, then you have the whole story of "dark witch". Just a weaker, flatter form of it. The book seems rushed and I don't ever learn to care for any the characters. In previous books by Nora Roberts you could envision the Irish country side, the look and feel of the land and it's people. You will find none of that in this book. I don't know if I'll read the other two books in this series. I think Nora Roberts lost her touch. I haven't really liked any of her books anymore since Morrigans cross. Which is to bad, because she used to be my fav author, and there's really nobody out there to take her place either. I think I'll go back and read some of her older books again.

Love it!. I bought this book at the airport in Costa Rica. Next thing I know I can't put it down had to read all 3 books!!!

Dark Witch. I enjoyed the book a little hard for me to follow at some points but found it interesting can’t wait to read the second book.

Dark Witch. Nora Roberts does it again! Full characters you want to visit again and again. Can't wait for the next book to come out!

Couldn't go pass book2. Book 1 was good enough to finish, a bit slow & not much detail in the art of telling a story, the characters & plot were good, than book 2 came around & began to lose my attention, didn't even get to book 3, although I am debating, only Bcuz I'm curious if they ever killed the demon lol

Another great series. Finished series and longed for more - Nora always has rich characters that “draw you into their world”. Nicely done.

Too similar. The beginning of this trilogy is very similar to others Roberts has written; she just combines it with her Irish and horse backgrounds. Not much new-

Not Roberts best!. Was very disappointed in this book. This is the first Norah Roberts novel that I found utterly predictable, thin on plot and characters that are so stereotypical. It reads like Roberts was just knocking off an idea to get it published fast. I feel like I was ripped off.

Dark witch. Can not wait for the next book in this trilogy! Great job Ms. Roberts!

Great Series. Throughly enjoyed this series, read all three books one right after the other. Wonderful reads!!

Dark Witch. Talk about a great 1st impression. Dark Witch is my 1st Nora Roberts book, and I couldn't up it down. I am now anxiously awaiting the next of the trilogy. Brilliant Book. I'm a Fan.

Disappointing. Not the usual Nora Roberts book, usually I can't put her books down. Could not wait to finish this book and for it to be over.

Amazing Book. Read hundreds maybe thousands of books and this is a all time favorite. Love the concept behind it being a big fan of romance novels and also being a avid horse woman I found I could relate a lot to the personality of the main character. Normally not a Nora Roberts fan but this book changed it all! Suggest giving it a try :)
