On my way to Markdown Ninjaness. I've been playing with Markdown for a few months. I know most of the basics and have bookmarked links to several of the common sites for markdown syntax. David Sparks, however, has a way of taking relatively dry information and presenting it in a clear, often entertaining way that just works for me. He makes great use of the iBooks format with dozens of short video demonstrations. Is it worth $10? You've got to judge that for yourself. For me, just seeing the demo on using the MD service tools to capture URL from all open browser tabs and automagically creating reference links in the app of my choice will save me $10 of my time after one use. Wow! Not only do I think the book is worth $10, I've already gifted it to two friends. Nice work David and Eddie.

Another winner Field Guide!. As a beginner of markdown, I found this field guide to be the perfect fit for me. I had heard so much of markdown through a variety of internet and apple gurus, that I really wanted to give it a try. This book puts everything literally at your fingertips and has screencasts to reinforce the ideas and concepts that the authors discuss. After the first few pages of the book, you can easily master the basics of markdown. Then you can explore more facets of the applications and continue on to learn more the more advanced techniques of markdown. This MacSparky Field Guide is coauthored with Eddie Smith and as always David Sparks brings together a great array of information beautifully packaged in an ibook authored format. Another Winner!

Fantastic addition to the other Field Guides. David Sparks has another hit on his hands. The hard work has paid off in the intro to Markdown. The Field Guide To MarkDown is fantastic. I read the book cover to cover in one sitting. The information was easy to understand and absorb. Before your book, I knew about MarkDown but did not really understand it or realize how it would improve my productivity. The interview with Federico Viticci is very hard to understand; it is "unlistenable". The audio keeps breaking up. David Sparks says he will redo the interview in the 1.1 edition to the book. I love that the format allows updates. That is a real game changer. A couple of the reviewers pointed out that the material cover is readily available on the web. Same could be said for any subject if I wanted to spend the time researching it. Markdown is very well covered and saves me the time looking around. The book covers the basics, but there is not too much to Markdown. It is simple and is designed to have a very shallow learning curve. MarkDown is a fine addition to your other Field Guides. I am looking forward to reading your next Guide as soon as it is published. Highly recommended.

Excellent introduction to Markdown - why you need it and how to adopt it. Markdown is one of those things that's generally thought of as a nerd tool but is extremely useful for anyone in a multiple-device world. David Sparks is excellent at making Md compelling and easy to understand, which is invaluable given how technical more advanced Markdown documentation can get. If you've never heard of Markdown but write a lot on your computer, phone, and tablet, this is an extremely worthwhile investment. Can't wait to see what this author produces next.

great book for a nubby. I've wanted to use Markdown for a while but never found time to. and thought that it looks to complicated. But this book dummies it down, And now I use Markdown everywhere I c

Great markdown guide, even if you're a beginner. I bought this after reading David Sparks’ book Paperless. Paperless was so good and I wanted to be exposed to the markdown language so this book was a no brainer. I’m a true beginner and I had no problem understanding the information in this book. There are so many great recommendations I ended up downloading several apps and programs to play with. Next up, Mr. Sparks’ book on email!

A great primer on Markdown (it's not just for web publishing). This book represents a great introduction to Markdown and includes some useful information for intermediate learners. While the advanced user may not glean as much information, the video casts, workflows, and interviews provide great insight into how you can incorporate Markdown into your life. For the longest time, I shrugged off Markdown thinking that I do not write for the web. Through some exploration prior to this book and through reading this book, I have found that Markdown is beneficial for so many more use cases than those publishing for the web. I highly recommend reading this book if you are interested in learning Markdown, expanding your understanding of it, or looking for a use case for it. It was an excellent read with many good tidbits of information, including a vast array of app suggestions depending on your needs.

A great Field Guide on Mac & iOS text editing in Markdown. When I first read this iBook, I already had the gist of Markdown, using it regularly with plain text writing in such applications as Byword, Markdown Pro, and, later, Editorial. But, I thought I could make use of a comprehensive tutorial, which this iBook provides.

A Great Way to Learn Markdown. I’m not a blogger or a web designer, but I kept hearing about this thing called Markdown and the benefits of working in plain text. At first I didn’t get it, but then I decided to check out David’s book and it all came together. I LOVE the idea of working with the simplicity of text files that can be accessible through any number of applications and tools. I LOVE the idea that these files will be accessible forever, even when all the proprietary software of today goes defunct. And I LOVE that there are a growing number of great apps that work with Markdown in various ways. David and Eddie do a great job of introducing the idea of Markdown, it's basic functionality and tools, and then have some great audio conversations with Markdown users about how they use it in their day-to-day lives. I highly recommend this book!

Old dog, new Markdown tricks. I've been a pretty rabid user of Markdown for the past few years, but even I picked up some new tricks (don't miss the Advanced Markdown section — it'll curl your hair). If you write prose anywhere that uses a keyboard, you should be using Markdown. If you want to learn Markdown, this book is all you need. Period.

I can now say "I know Markdown". MacSparky is awesome. After reading and loving *Paperless*, when this book came out, it was an easy purchase. I have been fumbling around with the whole concept of plain text writing and Markdown for several months. I found myself getting more frustrated than anything else. Markdown is certainly not mainstream, so only people closely connected to it seem to *get it* right away. I could not find a way of really learning the language. Enter *Markdown*. This book does exactly as promised. It claims early on to take you from Markdown Newbie to Markdown Ninja. I don't think I am quite a full-on ninja, but I absolutely do know Markdown now. I have no affiliation with David Sparks personally, but I can tell you that if he writes about a topic it is worth reading (and buying if the is a charge). David will only write about things he **knows** about. His writing is casual and informative. His screencasts are clear and concise. (You will actually learn how to make better screencasts by simply watching how he does his - fantastic!). *Markdown* gets top marks on all accounts. Now....if only we could reduce file size....

Perfect For Beginners. I went from having literally zero knowledge other than a desire to learn, and within a couple of hours I feel totally competent and have already began writing blog posts in Markdown. This book really does it make it that easy. The screencasts make learning that much simpler and the audio interviews are nice to find out tips and tricks from moe experienced users. I’d give this 6 stars if I could.

Great Book from a Great Advisor. I try to live by the adage work smart not hard. I knew markdown was a tool I needed but waited until someone I trust could advise me on the ins and outs along with recommendations for tools to use it with. Great book.

Wish it was here 8 months earlier!. As with everything Dave does, this was an excellent book. Perfect for those looking to get into markdown. As an experienced markdown writer, I still enjoyed the book. It was more than a tutorial, there are app recommendations, screencasts, text expander shortcuts, and several interviews with smart people.

A great Markdown introduction. I finished this book pretty fast, but I always come back to reference it. I am a new Markdown «user» (I’ve started to write in Markdown for some of my text editing), and I love being able to look up how I do X or Y quickly with the iBooks format, and with great, informal screencasts!

Must read!!!. It doesn't matter if you have no idea what Markdown is, just pick up this book and by the time you finish with it, you'll definitely will find many uses for it. You will enjoy this book as you learn something really cool, specially if you are a geek.

Get started in Markdown with two great teachers. I predict that the number of people using Markdown will go up exponentially, thanks to the great work of David Sparks and Eddie Smith. I am a recent Markdown convert, after 15 years of writing HTML code myself. It took me a long time to understand that just because I can write HTML doesn't mean that I should. I have been looking for this sort of book that covers basics and advanced techniques in a smart way.

Not worth it.. If you already use Markdown then you'll find this book extremeley disappointing. The content is nothing more than a few blog posts strung together and really not worth $9.99 ($2.99 at best). Save yourself the trouble and Google "markdown". The top 10 results cover pretty much everything in this e-book.

Weak Sauce. Not really impressed. The writing was okay but it moves slow and the fonts are abhorrent. Poor visual design. Very light on utility.

Brilliantly presented - The Markdown "Bible". No longer is Markdown a mysterious secret club. This field guide is the best way to get started using Markdown. Yes, Markdown is simple, but even the most savvy nerd will discover new things in this book. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if John Gruber learned a thing or two from this field guide. The interactive materials take you under Markdown's hood, and explore some of the best Markdown (and MultiMarkdown) tools for the Mac, iOS, and yes, even Windows machines. Interviews with Merlin Mann, Brett Terpstra, and Fletcher Penney bring much-added value to the "book". It's more than a book - it's a Markdown "extravaganza" which will completely change your daily workflow for the better. It's obvious David Sparks loves sharing via this format. He continues to leverage iBooks Author to its full potential. This book is presented well, and Sparks' collaboration with Eddie Smith adds another perspective to the versatility of Markdown. Two things you shouldn't ever miss - A MacSparky Field Guide, and the weekly episode of the Mac Power Users podcast with David Sparks and Katie Floyd. I don't ever miss one, and the knowledge shared is valuable and adds so much to my Mac and iOS "experience". You can search the web for information about Markdown, and learn it in bits and pieces, or you can use once resource - this book, which is the best reference/tutorial/introduction to Markdown there is. Let David and Eddie do the heavy lifting - you should jump right into the deep end of the Markdown swimming pool - MacSparky won't let you sink.

Great writing, a little light. I'm no markdown expert and hoped that this would provide both background and detailed format specs. The book offers a lot of the former and a bit less than I hoped of the latter. Not quite up to the stellar detail of Paperless.

More than a mere book. This "book" is full of movies and interviews that show how Markdown works. The best way to learn is to read, hear and see material on the specific topic. This book covers the range from rank beginner to advanced users, and everything is explained in detail. Its a MUST read watch and listen for anyone who works with words in any way.

Not essential. A pretty book, but not essential for anyone who wants to learn Markdown/MultiMarkdown. For anyone already using Markdown/MultiMarkdown, you will not likely learn anything new from this book. Everything in the book is available on the sites mentioned in the book. In fact, much of the book is a short summary of the topic with links to websites where the topics are covered in depth. As a summary of the major software available for desktop or iOS devices, this does well. But again, all of this software is reviewed in great depth on the Internet, so this book doesn't add any information. The screen casts included in the book cover the same ground that the accompanying text covers. Perhaps with some additional graphics or screen grabs, but usually not with any instruction beyond the text, or the sites linked in the main narrative.

Markdown. I admit it. I was disappointed when I heard the next MacSparky Field Guide was about Markdown. I had heard David Sparks talk about Markdown on various podcasts, but I never really understood what it was or how it could actually help me. I downloaded the sample just to see what all the hype was about. Well, he did it again. I have since purchased the full version and already composed my latest blog post in Markdown. I can't wait to see what else I can do with this. As someone who knew nothing about Markdown going in, this book was the perfect introduction.

Awesome resource for writers!. I had only heard of the term "Markdown" before picking up this book...can't believe what I've been missing. David and Eddie do a fantastic job of making this topic simple and accessible, but also powerful for those who want more. I'm going to start writing in Markdown immediately and am leaving behind for good all the issues I deal with regularly on HTML formatting during/after writing. I'm a little confused by a few reviews that say, "just Google Markdown and you'll get all this." You could Google ANY topic and get lots of info. The value of this book is the professional design, the logical progression, the clear and concise screencasts at a touch of a button, expert audio interviews, great graphics, and links to hundreds of resources. David and Eddie have put this high quality content in one place. Can't wait to get writing again!

Just buy it. I have to be honest, I never saw the point of Markdown - I don't write blogs or publish to the web: until recently, when I had to write a big report. I drafted it on my iPad in multimarkdown ( in Byword ); finessed it on my MacBook (in Multimarkdown Composer) then exported it as an rtf to my boss who uses a corporate windows laptop. Who then pasted it into his report in Microsoft Word. Who then got really big congratulations from the REALLY big boss for such a quick turnaround. Thank you David Sparks & Eddie Smith

Comes highly recommended. I develop an app that uses Markdown, and will now be recommending this to my users as an approachable and useful guide to the Markdown language.

Excellent resource. I've been using Markdown for over a year, but the extra tips in this book (especially for MultiMarkdown) are invaluable. Well worth the money whether you're getting started in Markdown or just want to refine your workflow!

Another Great Read by MacSparky. ##Great book **Just spent all evening reading and watching the videos** Well done David and Eddie

You'll be a Markdown maven after you read this. This is the ultimate tutorial on using John Gruber's Markdown "language" to format plain text documents as RTF, PDF or HTML files. The examples are well-chosen and the video clips illustrate each of the steps in the tutorial. The book also explains the services and extensions that can be added to Markdown and reviews the software available for using Markdown as your day to day writing language.

A very thin book. They pad it out with lots of images. And it’s still light. Really merely a survey of apps and the markdown world. A money spinner.
