Plot interesting, characters need word.. I may try another book or two in the series—if only to get more information about the cast from this book. While the author explains the financial and banking terms thoroughly, the character development and backstory was really lacking. Her relationship with Jace—ex boyfriend she buys a house with but no explanation why they are exes. Her best friend is an undercover detective, yet Kat acts clueless to that seeing Cindy working undercover. Uncle Harry was introduced, and his system that “didn’t make sense”, several times, was a little redundant. Aunt Elsie gets thrown in towards the end only to tell a story that just so happens to be involving the very subject matter Kat is investigating. We find that Kat grew up with said aunt and uncle more than halfway through the book without any explanation. The author adding Verna to the mix is confusing as well. I found myself a little irked at the main character Kat with her “unorthodox” methods. Edit: missing a quotation mark at the end of sentence in the last page of chapter 25.

Exit Strategy. Enjoyed the book. A lot of twists and turns. Very interesting. Thank you! Will read on.

Fabulous. My first book by Colleen Cross and immensely enjoyed it!! It kept you in suspenses and wondering what was going to happen next. On to my second book now!

Exit Strategy. I really like this book. The plot kept me guessing til the end. The characters are well developed and I especially like Katerina! Very well written. I recommend it to anyone who likes good mysteries!

No accounting for taste. The author is a Canadian accountant turned novelist, initially self published, who writes cozy mysteries involving witches and straight crime thrillers involving Vancouver-based forensic accountant Katerina Carter, of which this is the first. Our gal lost her corporate job in what we in Oz call the Global Financial Crisis but the rest of the world calls the Great Recession and put out her shingle as a solo practitioner in forensic accounting. Translation: She’s broke, which is not a good look for an accountant, forensic or otherwise. She’s living in the storeroom of her rented office in a downmarket part of town when offered a job by the female CEO of a diamond mining outfit. The CFO (chief financial officer) has just disappeared, along with $5 billion. Drawing on her skills from a previous life, the author explores various aspects of corporate malfeasance, mixes in several murders, the blood diamond trade, and some South American gangsters to produce a twisty mystery, that starts out cozy (i.e. the violence happens off screen) and becomes completely unrealistic by the end. In the best tradition of “folksy” crime fighters, our gal is assisted by a crowd of irregulars including her free lance journalist ex with whom she is renovating a house, and a somewhat eccentric uncle. There’ll be more of them in future volumes no doubt. The writing is so-so. Perhaps the expository bits about accounting and finance, of which there are many, would have upset me less had I not already known what Ms C was telling me. Perhaps not.

Exit Strategy. Found the book very entertaining and intriguing. Enjoyed it immensely. Can’t wait for the next.

Intriguing. This was an intriguing, action packed suspenseful story. Katerina Carter is a forensic accountant and is hired to find money stolen by an executive of the company. Little does she know she will come into contact with mobsters, conflict diamonds, organized crime and even murder. There is a lot of detail included in this story describing the financial aspects of accounting, including money laundering, stock exchange, etc. It also goes into a lot of detail describing the world of conflict diamonds. Though it is educational it is at times daunting. I did however enjoy the story very much and thought the narration was excellent. Petrea Burchard did an amazing job with all the voices and made listening to this book an enjoyable experience. I received a free copy of this audiobook, however I voluntarily submit this unbiased review.
