My Story Book Summary

The harrowing true story of abduction and survival from the courageous young woman who lived it—now the subject of a Lifetime original movie, I Am Elizabeth Smart.

In this memoir, Elizabeth Smart reveals how she survived and the secret to forging a new life in the wake of a brutal crime. On June 5, 2002, fourteen-year-old Elizabeth Smart, the daughter of a close-knit Mormon family, was taken from her home in the middle of the night by religious fanatic Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee. Elizabeth was kept chained, dressed in disguise, repeatedly raped, and told she and her family would be killed if she tried to escape. After her rescue on March 12, 2003, she rejoined her family and worked to pick up the pieces of her life.

With My Story, Elizabeth tells of the constant fear she endured every hour, her courageous determination to maintain hope, and how she devised a plan to manipulate her captors and convinced them to return to Utah, where she was rescued minutes after arriving. Smart explains how her faith helped her stay sane in the midst of a nightmare and how she found the strength to confront her captors at their trial and see that justice was served.

In the years after her rescue, Smart transformed from victim to advocate, traveling the country and working to educate, inspire and foster change. She has created a foundation to help prevent crimes against children and is a frequent public speaker. She and her husband, Matthew Gilmour, now have two children.

  • Big person (Kittybubby)

I am very impressed with Elizabeth. Her courage, faith and wisdom is amazing for someone her age. She interjected humor into book as well and made me laugh. I would love to hear her speak or meet her one day. God Bless her !
  • Elizabeth Smart (Kraftycrochet)

Overall the book was a good read. I personally have a hard time believing she was as naive as she was. I despised constantly her view of herself as a child. She was 14 when all of this happened. Elizabeth also comes off as a very selfish, “I’m better than everyone” attitude, she was to the extent of her captors but not the rest of the world. I finished the book because I paid for it, but have zero interest in purchasing her new book.
  • Truly inspirational (RachelESa)

This book gave me nothing but chills and as I turned each page I couldn't put the book down. Makes you really thankful for the life you have and to realize things change in a blink of an eye. Truly inspiring and a great book!
  • My Story (nanakurtz)

A sharing of hope in the midst of darkness & despair was so powerful. The wisdom of a young persons experience & her unbelievable ability to cope is so inspiring. I appreciate what she shared as a gift to all who read this incredible journey. These words have the potential to positively change lives if the reader chooses to listen with an open heart. This book is one to be studied for all its wisdom.

  • READ IT!! It's inspiring. (Anthony_MySunshine)

Not once did I not tear every time I got a chance to read this book (hands full with 3 sunshines). At the end of this book, a tear of happiness and feeling grateful. Definitely Elizabeth Smart gave me a view of the dark world we live in, but also that there is more good than evil.
  • Beautiful, Dark, & Brutally Honest (bturrini)

I loved it; no doubt about that! Through her point of view I got a clear picture of what it must've been like facing pain and suffering, and as I read I felt like I was there and wondering what I could do. That's the beauty of books and I love that. It's a beautiful book, with its dark side to it but it's really honest. I don't know how she moved on so well, but I applaud her very much and I'm glad her former captors—whose names will not be said—finally received the punishment they long deserved. I pray that Elizabeth gets the best in life and that alone. She's amazing and I'm glad to have read this book. Thank you for sharing your story and helping others!
