The Girl With All the Gifts by M. R. Carey Book Summary

In the ruins of civilization, a young girl's kindness and capacity for love will either save humanity -- or wipe it out in this USA Today bestselling thriller Joss Whedon calls "heartfelt, remorseless, and painfully human."

Melanie is a very special girl. Dr Caldwell calls her "our little genius."

Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointed at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh.

Riveting. M.R. Carey's deft pen has a way of taking readers on a joy ride. His refreshing zombie prospective that breaks down the scientific aspects of a zombie and his insight of each character steers the reader through an apocalyptic world at full speed.

Thoughtfully exciting. I like it

Truly unusual. In a market that is stuffed with mediocre apocalyptic books, "The Girl With All The Gifts" is brilliant. Emotionally satisfying and engaging with characters you can truly care about.

So good but....... The book was great in the beginning and middle, but the ending was underwhelming after so much action, creepiness, and science, which I thought had interesting theories that could almost be applied today or the future, it just end like the author didn't know what to do after such a great book. Still I will read his next book.

Enthralling storytelling.. This may place in my top stories I have ever read. From its slow reveal of a post apocalyptic Britain to our introduction to young Melanie and to our increasing understanding of their true nature this book maintains a thoughtful and compelling narrative that left something faerie-like uplifting and hopeful in this otherwise bleak and terrifying landscape. The thoughtful progression of the plot with well developed and believable characters was welcomed in what could have been a tired rehash of the zombie genre. Instead we get almost a "buddy movie" between a misunderstood girl, her teacher, and their awkward companions. How will they make the most out of this wild adventure? Well this isn't the Breakfast Club, but the ending is well thought out and brilliant, and leave you in that space where you wish you could hold on to that dream just a little longer to relish the world created.

Excellent. Really enjoyed the book. The ending felt a bit rushed, but otherwise, excellent.

Great play on zombie scheme. Great writing, plot and character development matched with a twist on the zombie theme... what more could you ask for if you enjoy post apocalyptic zombie fantasy!

One of the best of its genre. After having first seen the movie I decided to try the book. The movie closely follows the story line of the book so if you enjoyed the film then you will more than likely enjoy reading this apocalyptic tale of a killer zombie virus. I have read many of the written works in this genre and watched just about every movie pertaining to zombies and I must say that I am quite impressed. Read a sample and see if you can put it down. Good luck.

Breathtaking tragedy...or tale of hope?. Beautifully formed. Wonderfully written. This is a phenomenal story that transcends its genre. I wish I could read it for the first time again. Kudos M.R. Carey!

Surprised I enjoyed it!. This is by far not my genre of reading, but I bought it because it said on the books shelf if I liked Handsmaids tale I would like this. Well I don’t get the comparison at all... but I Really enjoyed it! It was a pretty simple read with a few well developed characters. I simply couldn’t put it down. A nice surprise!

Very nicely done. It's bigger on ideas than on characterization, and some of the description is thin, but the story was very well done, and I really enjoyed it.

Yuck. Story is gross, but promising. The end was a let down. I’m glad I didn’t pay the $10 for it and waited til it was on sale.

Zombies have sex. Four stars til the reveal that zombie adults were having sex, getting pregnant, and having smart zombie babies. Ruined the whole book. Will not read sequel.

An excellent read. While enjoying a group's struggles of survival in a world post-infection on a global scale of mass devastation, you'll find yourself rooting for victory in an unexpected person and walking away from the ending not unequivocal of whether or not it was the right thing to do. Highly recommend this book!

Unique and Gut Wrenching (literally and figuratively). This book is an exciting and fresh take on the zombie apocalypse, despite the over saturation across all media. The story unfolds in ways you wouldn't expect. One might compare it to the video game The Last of Us, but the story is unique in its own way. The characters and the narrative are what makes the book shine. It's not brainless zombie fodder. It deals with ethical issues that arise from a zombie apocalypse scenario with great nuance. Fortunately, there are bits of horror that's enough to plant seeds to drive your imagination wild.

nicely crafted, fascinating, and too tedious. I thought it was great until they got close to London. It started going downhill with minutiae and Tolkin like detalil that would be fine if I had been… Great work and sophisticated… just pandeed to the pulp too much.

Great Read. I loved the book. I didn't think it was scary. I think it had a realistic ending and I enjoyed the entire book. I couldn't put it down.

Pretty Good. I thought the book was scary for it's potential of being real. The ending felt like a predictable twilight zone ending, but overall a good book that kept you interested.

Wonderful. It’s been stated that this is a young adult novel but as an older adult I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.

Great Read. Really fun read from beginning to end. Totally took me by surprise as I thought this would be a typical zombie book. Well done!

Good. Not a zombie book.

Page turner, would be a great movie.. Great book, was fun to read and couldn't put down. I imagine this to be a great movie and even could picture who could play the main characters. Ending gave me chills.

Best book I've read. You get to know and care for all the characters which make the story amazing

Loved it! Similar to The Walking Dead.. The future dystopian society in which the story takes place is really well created and portrayed. I really connected with the characters and was kept in suspense throughout the story. I regularly watch The Walking Dead and I felt the theme and style were similar.

Mind=blown. Never read anything in this genre before. Went in with no expectations... or actually...honestly thinking I would be reading something a bit ridiculous. Loved the writing. I can't remember last just enjoying the descriptive language of a book. The plot was infectious. Even plausible, almost. I was hooked in love with the little girl right from the start. All characters well built. Left wanting to interact more with the story. The audiobook was marvellously recorded. Really well acted changing tone for characters. I usually reserve audiobooks for my commute but I was so intrigued I kept on listening. Highly recommend.

One if the best books I've read!. One if the best books I've read!
