The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein Book Summary

As The Giving Tree turns fifty, this timeless classic is available for the first time ever in ebook format. This digital edition allows young readers and lifelong fans to continue the legacy and love of a classic that will now reach an even wider audience.

"Once there was a tree...and she loved a little boy."

So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein. This moving parable for all ages offers a touching interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return.

Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk...and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave. This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation.

Shel Silverstein's incomparable career as a bestselling children's book author and illustrator began with Lafcadio, the Lion Who Shot Back. He is also the creator of picture books including A Giraffe and a Half, Who Wants a Cheap Rhinoceros?, The Missing Piece, The Missing Piece Meets the Big O, and the perennial favorite The Giving Tree, and of classic poetry collections such as Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic, Falling Up, Every Thing On It, Don't Bump the Glump!, and Runny Babbit.

And don't miss the other Shel Silverstein ebooks, Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic!

Excited. I could never find this book anywhere after always reading my friend's copy as a kid. I read that it was banned? I pre-ordered this copy so I can read it again. It means so much to me. Always has been my favorite, always.

The Giving Tree. Childhood community reading time fact. The three rules. Tree is giving.

Nice, depressing read. The surprise ending is the best! My four year old and I were not expecting the author to be a Neanderthal! Jk This was a lovely book. A tad too sad though. Boo hoo.

Well..... A librarian read this to me in my old days... Pre-school? Pre-K? I’m not sure. I have always remembered this book but have not ordered it yet, but I’m going to. The boy and the tree, it has been stuck in my mind, which is good. This book reminds me of my dead hamster and fish, who I always have loved and hoped to see again. It reminds me of my family, my relatives, all the way to great-great-great-great grandparents. I have not even known my great-grandparents, but I wish to see them someday. The Giving Tree teaches kids to love their moms, their dads, brothers, sisters, pets, aunts, uncles, grandmothers, grandfathers, great-grandparents, great-great-grandparents, all until the earliest days. The Giving Tree is way better than The Taking Tree, which is a similar but badder book than The Giving Tree. I have a ancient tree in my yard, which was there since when my father was a boy. My house, where my grandfather used to live, the USA, Ohio, where I live, where I was born, where I was baptized.... *sniff* all the memories........ All so sad, having relatives across the ocean,....... this brings memories to children, too, and brings friends and family closer.

Memories. This was the first book I read as a child and now I can read it to my young cousins from my iPad. Adorable story!

I think.... It was a great book. You should not be greedy but you should be grateful for what you have.

Great Book!. Great book for kids and even teenagers to learn about life and giving.

Brought tears to my eyes. Brought tears to my eyes. I was scared the poem would have a sad ending. It turned out well.

Best book. Do a girl giving tree 🌲 gooooooooooooooooooooood Book. Good good good 👍

A classic.. I read this story to my sons often.

Amazing. So nice! I made me cry.😭 And hey, I am only a kid with a phone! I am in third grade. In kindergarten, I would always try to find the book! And please read and buy the book!

The Giving Tree. This story about a tree has affected my life more than I could have possibly imagined. I was read this story as a child many time, and thought it was cool. But only because this boy had made a lifelong friend, and they were both happy. But I recently came back and reread this book as an adult. I can't say how much it moved me. It shows how much you can love someone, almost to the point of decimating yourself, and still see what that person is doing to you. But it also teaches a lesson that people can change, as the boy does. Sometimes I wonder if the tree is the most human character in the story. I would like to think so.

Why so much?. I like this book but it is way to expensive

The Giving Tree. This is one of the my favorite children's books. Definitely worth it.

Noooooo. Nonononono

So adorable!!!🥺. This is better than my favorite graphic novel. It’s so cute that it makes me cry😓😓😓 it’s sad and there’s a reason why. But it’s super duper cute. And the best book in the world😊😊😊😊 thank you

Silverstein's BEST. This was a favorite childhood book, and it was also a favorite of my own children. The story of growing, sharing and sacrifice is very moving as we go through various stages of life. I can't wait to get the e-book for my iPad!

Childhood favorite. Just got done sharing this amazing book with my 4yr old son, while he is too young to get the real story here, being a parent I can relate to this book more now than ever. Not gonna lie, I got a little emotional near the end after reading this for the first time in quite a while. My grandma used to read me this book all the time and am now passing this tradition on to my sons makes me happy.

My favorite book. This book is a masterpiece of literature, though I do have to say the picture on the back scared my 17th born on the way so bad I no longer have a 17th born on the way though my 19th born thinks he looks like Santa Claus.

A Beautiful Story. A story about sacrifice, unconditional love, giving, usefulness, selflessness, selfishness and impermanence; a story about life and the human condition.

Great for bedtime. My nine year old son, Greg kept getting out of bed so I read this to him and showed him a picture of Shel on the back of the book and said “ If you get out of bed tonight, you might run into Shel Silverstein in the hallway. “. He hasn’t gotten out of bed since, he 14 now.

Nice story. My kids loved it

I cry every time I read this book. My mom read it to me, I read it to my first son, my second son and my third on the way. It is a beautiful and simple story about generosity and love.

From the mouth of a 4yr old. I love the guy that wrote this book. Everybody rock on! Hey yo I love you!

This was a good book. It was a wonderful idea and a good story.

AAAAAAAA. This book is good and nice

Great book!. It really shows the importance of trees. I love how it also shows the importance giving and kindness. The book also shows how one thing can make an enormous difference! Loved it!!!

The Giving Tree. Still my favorite childhood book. Thanks for bringing it to iTunes. Now my daughter can read it!

3rd Grade review. We liked this book because the tree was thoughtful. The tree didn't think only of himself, he was very unselfish. We learned that it's not nice to be selfish.

the giving tree. i LOVE this book. favorit child memories

Greatest story ever told. Honesty it is!. Shel Silverstein's "The Giving Tree" is the greatest story ever told. It starts out with a small boy and his love for his tree, then grows into a story about what the tree can do to make the boy happy. Soon the tree has nothing more to give and the boy understands how selfish he has been toward the tree. The tree is visited by someone and sees the beauty in the old stump and they sit together and are happy. All stories should have a happy ending that makes you really smile. This book does. I'm 33 and still love reading The Giving Tree. I do not have children to share the experience with yet, but maybe one day the younger generation will appreciate this book as much as I have. - Desiree

BAD. I got a ripoff for 11 dollars on a thirty page book I love ur books but this was just not cool

Great for kids and leadership. I grow up listening to this book read to me. Now I read it to my kids. But I have also used it for leadership development at work. It teaches many important principles.

Beautiful. The best. I read this throughout my entire childhood and now enjoy reading it to my children at various stages of their development. It's a lesson in how not to be selfish.

Perfection!. The Giving Tree is a total work of art! I love it!

Ps this isn’t a graphic novel I’m pretty sure. Dank donute guy wrote this booke with his doge and his cate in africae

Giving tree. Classic

So touching. Oh how I know the tree

Amazing. Quite an outstanding peice of art! My heart broke into tears reading the book of true happiness.

Giving. A great lesson in giving which makes the tree very happy even when the tree had nothing left. It has wonderful sentiment. I like it even more as an adult.

🤔. My high school sweetheart bought me this book as a gift when we were dating. I was 16 years of age. She was 18. I guess she was trying to tell me that I was the tree and she(🪝) was the boy after all. I’m still that tree at 46 and I’ve learned through the years that when giving of yourself that much you are bound to get hurt that much. Now that I’m aware, I shall not comment or post as much online because I continue to be left behind by those who won’t consider helping me when I need the help most. So learn to keep your guard up or else those little boys will take advantage of you and yet they’ll use things against you that aren’t true especially if your name is Tom Cruise and Ryan Seacrest. They’re already hacking my main cell phone it’s disgusting how having that amount of money can turn you into a complete monster towards someone like me full of ideas and that’s all they want. Let them hack you until the FBI gets involved. Just sayin’

Um you guys got 3 pages and the book is so dum. Not reading it again

I like it. I read this book on paper before but it is good it’s called the tree and I love it it’s of a little boy in a tree in the tree does all these miracle magical things for it for the little boy I really do recommend it it gets a little sad at some point because the trees chop down and trees also bring us oxygen I love this book I do think that you should recommend it and even if you don’t want to recommend it that’s OK I put a five point star view and I do recommend it even if it gets a little sad sometimes I know my review is long but just hold on with me I love this book it is really good you can buy on Etsy I do think

Awesome. As a child this was my favourite book it teaches children so much it is just a wonderful book! This is a must buy!!!

An All-Time Classic!!!. “The Giving Tree” is one of the very best children’s books ever written. In very simple language and illustrations, Silverstein describes for the reader the selflessness of unconditional Love. Big topic, beautifully told. Highly recommended!!! :)
