The One & Only by Emily Giffin Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The beloved author of Something Borrowed and Where We Belong returns with an extraordinary story of love and loyalty—and an unconventional heroine struggling to reconcile both.

This ebook edition contains an excerpt from Emily Giffin’s First Comes Love.

Emily Giffin, the beloved author of such novels as Something Borrowed and Where We Belong, returns with an extraordinary story of love and loyalty—and an unconventional heroine struggling to reconcile both.

Thirty-three-year-old Shea Rigsby has spent her entire life in Walker, Texas—a small college town that lives and dies by football, a passion she unabashedly shares. Raised alongside her best friend, Lucy, the daughter of Walker’s legendary head coach, Clive Carr, Shea was too devoted to her hometown team to leave. Instead she stayed in Walker for college, even taking a job in the university athletic department after graduation, where she has remained for more than a decade.

But when an unexpected tragedy strikes the tight-knit Walker community, Shea’s comfortable world is upended, and she begins to wonder if the life she’s chosen is really enough for her. As she finally gives up her safety net to set out on an unexpected path, Shea discovers unsettling truths about the people and things she has always trusted most—and is forced to confront her deepest desires, fears, and secrets.

Thoughtful, funny, and brilliantly observed, The One & Only is a luminous novel about finding your passion, following your heart, and, most of all, believing in something bigger than yourself . . . the one and only thing that truly makes life worth living.

Not what you expect from Emily Giffin. It isn't a bad book but it wasn't what I was hoping for when I bought it. I love all of her other books but I won't be buying the hard back of this one for my collection.

AMAZING!. Coach Carr is hot! Shea and Lucy are great characters! I'm not a huge football gal but I LOVED this read! It's a must read! 😃☀️❤️

not the best. I have read all of Giffin's books. This was my least favorite, for a few reasons. I do love football, so I enjoyed the fact that the story revolves around football, but if you don't care about football, you will probably not enjoy this book. The main character, Shea, was incredibly annoying. What bothered me the most about her was that she would not even entertain the idea that her own issues with her father had anything to do with her attraction to Coach Carr. Not saying that all people who fall for people old enough to be their father have daddy issues, but to not even consider it?? And then the issues Shea had with her own father were miraculously non-existent by the end of the book. Also, I like how Giffin weaves in characters from previous books into subsequent books. Unless I missed it, she did not do that this time. The ending was horrible in that the story was wrapped up in two sentences.

Terrible. Don't waste your money, you will be disappointed.

Waste of time. This book has no redeeming qualities.. save your time reading a different book

Disappointing. Have loved all of her books but this one just was strange. Falling in love with the man who was a father figure your whole life-weird.

Boo. This was, by far, one of the very worst books I have ever read. I kept going ONLY because it was like watching a car crash- I couldn't look away from the horror that was unraveling. It gets worse and worse until it's over.... And then you wonder why you wasted hours of your life on this garbage. I've read most of the other books by this author, and all of them are decent, light, beach reads. No clue what she was thinking when she wrote this one, though.

Disappointed. Mostly football and sport related rather than romance.. I'm not a sports fan and found 80% of the book boring.. Don't know how it got to be best seller!

is this fiction or sports column?. Half of the book consists of sports conversation! like the characters discuss all the time about sports. I get it, THEY LOVE SPORTS. But I don’t need to read gibberish sports conversation half the time. You could skim the book and you probably wouldn’t miss the story line because like I said it’s nothing but sports gibberish talk. What’s worse? the sports conversation doesn’t even add to the storyline. Whoever told this author to print the story should get fired! Seriously poor judgement. I came here to read a story not to hear about people talk about sports. Watching ESPN is better than reading this book

Uhhh...... If you're a fan of creepy, inappropriate relationships this is the book for you.

This was ok. Maybe I am just aware of the way the author writes, but I knew what was going to happen before it happen in a lot of this story. The storyline was ok, but had a lot of college football banter, which for me was a little boring. I do love the characters and the last 60 pages had me wrapped up and emotional. Laughing out loud and even shedding a tear at the end. I say give it a try!

Depressing and boring. Depressing and boring

Read this book!!. I wanted to review this book because when I was deciding whether or not to purchase, I felt very conflicted by the many negative reviews I saw. I have previously read Something Borrowed and Something Blue and I loved both of them. I was confused by the negative reviews on this book because I had had great experiences with Emily Giffin books before. I am so glad I disregarded the negative reviews and purchased this book. I love that Emily writes about unconventional relationships and tells their stories. I honestly think that there are two reasons people gave low ratings to this story: 1.) The heavy incorporation of the football world, and 2.) the main relationship (don't want to give any spoilers!). I personally and a football junky just like Shea so this was an asset to the story in my opinion. Basically, I just wanted to review this story because I couldn't put it down, I loved it, and I almost missed out on it because of other people saying it wasn't as good as her others. I say...buy the book!!! The only reason I don't give it the fifth star is because I felt that it wrapped up a little too quickly in the end, but either way, wonderful story.

Borrrrring. Boring, boring, boring. Two uninteresting characters who are all wrong for each other.

Ddcsz. Stzyzryfddgdddrzhr

Different. This book was different from her others, she included sports which she never did before. I was impressed and it was amazing.

Great Read. I have read all of Emily Giffen's books and could not wait to get my hands on this one! What a great one! I had read reviews before actually reading and I disagree with the comments made about any girl who could be this into football. I can see this being reality.

Creepy!. I normally love Emily Giffen but this book was just creepy! I didn't think the characters were well developed at all and the main character Shea is incredibly annoying and unbelievable. This was a complete miss!

Boring!. I was disappointed by this book, as I enjoyed Griffin's other novels great. The plot was boring and predictable.

Not her best but still pretty good. Okay, I love Emily Giffin and have read all her books but this one was not her best. It took me a little bit to get into it...enough at a time to keep my interest, but towards the middle of the book is when I couldn't put it down. I agree with other reviewers, there is a lot of football talk in it but it does have a part in the story line. Overall, a pretty good book, but not my favorite.

Emily Giffin Fans Don't Waste Your Time. This book is awful, and I am (or at least was) a huge Emily Giffin fan. Not only is the writing subpar, the story is unbelievable, unsettling, and simply predictable. The writing is so bad that I kept thinking that it couldn't possibly be Emily Giffin (ghost writer maybe??). The love triangle is completely unbelievable and disturbing at the same time, and not in a good way! And, don't even get me started on her portrayal of Texas and football. Don't waste your time... I promise you will thank me!

Awful. Boring, predictable from page 1. Drags on forever. So disappointed. I love Emily Giffin but after this, I don't know if I'll ever read another one! This book was so bad, before I could get half way through, I literally skipped to the last 2 pages to read the ending- which I correctly predicted from page 1. Awful!

Terrible. This is the worst book I can remember reading, and I typically like this author. The main storyline was very inappropriate and I hated where the main character ended up. At the beginning she wanted to change her life and she wound up exactly where she started without much putting much effort into improving. Don't bother spending the money.

Loved it. Until the end.. I enjoyed this book. I was looking for a lite summer read and quickly became attached to the main character and just couldn't put it down. I loved all of the plot lines. At times it was a little hard to believe, but in today's world many people's real life stories are hard to believe. I was in love until the end. The story flowed well with the football season and ended in that same time frame but, so much of the book focused on other passions and relationships that I felt lost and left with many questions about what happens next. It just didn't feel complete. Almost as if she couldn't figure out the ending.

Turns into a decent book. It started out miserably boring but about 1/4 of the way through it got pretty interesting. It's not her best but it's a good read if you can get through the first few boring chapters. I like it.

Not her best work. I have read all of Emily's books and love them all. I was looking forward to reading this one. Unfortunately I was disappointed by this one. I hope she listens to the readers feedback and writes a great book that her readers will love again.

Not the best. It took me several months to try and finish it. Ended up skimming the book and being bored. Love her books, just not this one.

Not worth the money or time. I've read all of the Emily Griffin books and they keep getting worse. She is washed up after Something Borrowed Something Blue. They were the only good books I have read of hers. I keep thinking she will have better story lines on later books but they're terrible. I would not recommend this read. No one wants someone hooking up with their friend's dad. You can't even get a good mental image of the two. Gross.

Boring. I kept waiting for this book to get exciting or give me something to care about but it never did. As a fellow lover of football I would've expected to connect with Shea, but I ended up disliking her quite a bit. I can forgive a lot of issues with a book if the characters are well developed but every single one fell flat. Cliches abound. I'm not offended by Shea's relationship with Coach the way some readers are, but I also didn't believe in their love story. It rang false. Her incessant obsessing about him in the beginning was obnoxious and their entire buildup lacked emotion. It would take way better writing for me to believe that a girl who grew up with a man being her father figure and vice versa could have romantic feelings for each other. The way it was written feels like on her side it screams "daddy issues" and on his side he's a pervert. I could've possibly gotten behind it if it wasn't played out so hurriedly and awkwardly. Lucy came off self absorbed. Ryan was a tool. Miller was an idiot. Why the coworker (graham?) was thrown in there and then not even given a storyline is beyond me. Also, I like country music, but the references seemed random and not even adding to the story. I normally like Giffin, so this book was really a shock to me. I honestly didn't like anything about it.

The one and only. It wasn’t nearly as good as her original 3 books it seems like there’s becoming a decline. Daughters don’t just suddenly let their best friends start dating their dads with a simple change of heart. This wasn’t a realistic story of wanting what is best for people.

Fun summertime reading. Enjoyed reading this book about love, friendship, and football. Being a native Texan, I understand our states passion for all things football. The author nails it and shares it with a good sense of humor.

Giffen never disappoints!. I have read all of her books. Each one better than the last. The only problem with this one is that it ended. Loved loved loved it!

Wish there was more.... It was a great story, story line was not what I expected it to be but still an easy, heartfelt read. I wish there was an extra chapter or even a follow up book to know what happened after the final scene...

The One And Only. Good read until the unformed ending that is abrupt and dissatisfying !!

Loved this book. Great read! This is a very compelling story.. Might well be her best!

Great book!!. A lot of reviews whine about the football aspect of the book. That's what the whole thing is wrapped around!! If you don't like football well you might not enjoy the book. But she did a great job of making this book realistic and believable. It's a football love story whether you agree with it or not. Another great story from Emily.

Disappointing. Disappointed. The book just dragged on and on and then just ended abruptly. And there were way too many back to back references to country songs playing on the radio. Overdone. I've loved all of her books up until this one.

Loved!. I couldn't put this book down. I loved the story, the characters, the football. I was sad as I neared the end because I didn't want to stop reading! As others said, the ending left me wanting to know more, but maybe we're in for a sequel? EG has been known to bring characters into other books. I'd love to read another story about this group!

The One & Only. I bought this book because I loved all of Giffin's other books. This is nothing like the others. I didn't like it at all. Couldn't get on board with the love story at all... Totally depressing and not the fun summer read I was hoping for. Still a huge Giffin fan, but just not of this book.

More than a love story. Football is not my passion. Yet, I hung on every word involving the passion for the game. This was also a beautiful story of friendship, grief, loyalty and love. It touched on the timely issue of abuse in relationships, by those involved in the violence of football.

Disappointing. The ending was not an ending. The entire book I kept waiting for what seemed inevitable and then it all happens in three pages! Very disappointing, sometimes finishing a book is as important as starting one but not at the expense of leaving the reader hanging. So disappointed!

Fun to read, like all EG. Love the time I spend reading Emily Giffin books. Stayed up late because I loved reading so much. Wasn't my favorite of her story lines though. Overall, for a fun, well written book, read it!

Disappointing. I have each book Giffin has written numerous times. Her stories pull at my heart strings and stay with me for weeks to come. Unfortunately, this is the first book I do not feel that way about. I found the relationship between Coach Clive and Shea incestuous. The protagonist grew up with her best friend's family. Caroline and Coach were like her parents. The relationship between Caroline and Coach seemed tainted and like a joke, in my opinion. The logistics of Shea and Coach would never work, and if they did it is creepy. From the first inkling of the relationship I kept telling myself I was reading into something that wasn't there and Giffin wasn't "that" type of author. Apparently, I was incorrect. Very disappointed and frankly, grossed out.

Emily's best work to date!. I have never written a book review before, but after seeing a fair amount of negative reviews (I couldn't believe there was even ONE!) I had to write something. I LOVED this book. I felt like I was walking around with butterflies in my stomach all the time....like I had a HUGE crush on someone. Lots of football, but overall, I didn't mind any fillers because I didn't want it to end. Best book I've read in a long time. Nothing like a good love story...this was her best (read them all).

One and Only MISS. I have every one of Emily's books and I love them, but I just can't finish this one. I see where this story is going, and the way it's being told just doesn't keep me interested :( If this is your first Emily Giffin book all her work is amazing just not this one unfortunately.

Three years later.... I’m such a fan of Emily Giffen. I love reading her books and typically glued to every page of her books, but I kept waiting for this novel to pick up and it just didn’t for me. Three years later and I haven’t completed it. I will go back and attempt to finish it at some point, but it was hard to capture my attention.

Can't finish this book. Not good. I usually enjoy her books. This one, I can't even finish. Horrible storyline. Totally unbelievable.

Disappointing. I normally love Emily Griffin's books but this one was a huge let down. The football part is so boring; who cares about all the stats? The ending felt very off and kind of rushed and there were several unanswered questions. I will be reading her next book after i check it out of the library and use my hard earned money on someone else's book.

Don’t waste your money.... This story line is horrible. I love all of Emily Giffin’s other books. This is just twisted and sad and plain horrible. Don’t waste your money.

The One and Only Book of Emily Giffin's that I did not enjoy.. First I must say I am a fan of Emily Giffin. As a fan of any author I read all of their releases and try to capture what I really enjoy about that author while reading it. I have read all of her books and was eager for the release of "The One and Only". As a person that grew up in the world of Big 10 Football, attending and cheering for a Big 10 University. I understand the dedication and the loyalty of College football. Especially since at the time Pro football was really new to my state and we all supported College football. Now from the beginning of the book I was disappointed because it basically laid a road map of where the story was headed within the first chapter. Afterwards the writing was on the wall regarding the direction of the book. The main character seemed to go over board with her admiration to the point that I seriously wanted to reach into the pages and shake her. It was like an annoying friend that just would not shut up. Even when the main character formed other relationships she still focused on this one person and treated him as if he were a god. During the first 6 chapters I wanted to shake some sense into the editior and say ok we got the point, couldn't you tell Emily to lay off the praise and cat and mouse behavior. And by the chapter I knew exactly what the status of the main characters relationship with her best friend would end up being. The middle was very predictable, even with the thrown in drama from the star football player. And the end was if nothing else was unrealistic. I didn't leave the book at night thinking wow I can't wait to continue tomorrow. And this is coming from a fan of Emily's and of different writing styles and techniques. I felt that she released this one with the weight of her name and that although her name did encourage me to purchase this new release, I have to say I will not be so eager to purchase something solely based on her name or my enjoyment of her other releases. For her next book, I will rent it from the library before I purchase it. And that is truly disappointing. I'm sure she will bounce back and write something amazing next time, or rather I hope so.
