Bird Box by Josh Malerman Book Summary

“A book that demands to be read in a single sitting, and through the cracks between one’s fingers. There has never been a horror story quite like this. Josh Malerman truly delivers.” — Hugh Howey, New York Times bestselling author of Wool

Written with the narrative tension of The Road and the exquisite terror of classic Stephen King, Bird Box is a propulsive, edge-of-your-seat horror thriller, set in an apocalyptic near-future world—a masterpiece of suspense from the brilliantly imaginative Josh Malerman.

Something is out there . . .

Something terrifying that must not be seen. One glimpse and a person is driven to deadly violence. No one knows what it is or where it came from.

Five years after it began, a handful of scattered survivors remain, including Malorie and her two young children. Living in an abandoned house near the river, she has dreamed of fleeing to a place where they might be safe. Now, that the boy and girl are four, it is time to go. But the journey ahead will be terrifying: twenty miles downriver in a rowboat—blindfolded—with nothing to rely on but her wits and the children’s trained ears. One wrong choice and they will die. And something is following them. But is it man, animal, or monster?

Engulfed in darkness, surrounded by sounds both familiar and frightening, Malorie embarks on a harrowing odyssey—a trip that takes her into an unseen world and back into the past, to the companions who once saved her. Under the guidance of the stalwart Tom, a motely group of strangers banded together against the unseen terror, creating order from the chaos. But when supplies ran low, they were forced to venture outside—and confront the ultimate question: in a world gone mad, who can really be trusted?

Interweaving past and present, Malerman’s breathtaking debut is a horrific and gripping snapshot of a world unraveled that will have you racing to the final page.

Nothing like the movie.... The movie on Netflix is nothing compared to the book. At all. It’s like they took the premise and names of characters and that was it. Definitely worth the time reading! I couldn’t put Bird Box down! Looking into other works by this author. Recommend reading this before watching what they call Bird Box on Netflix. Now the movie is just a disappointment.

Bird box. Not interesting to me. I did not enjoy all of the struggles and felt uncomfortable with all the blindfolds.

LOVE SO MUCH ❤️. This an amazing book I totally recommend ages 9-17 just because it is a little scary! Hope this helps!❤️

Amazing and great deal. Loved it

Clever and Unique. 🛑🛑BEYOND THERE BE SPOILERS🛑🛑 This iBook has sat in my library, untouched, since the Netflix movie came out. It was featured in one of iBook’s huge sales, so I was, like, why not. I finally read it, and I’m so impressed, I’m writing a review. Best book I’ve read in awhile. Dialogue flows naturally, the author brings “the roommates” to life effortlessly, and there was even a brief, albeit real love between two characters which would have been so beautiful. Many books boast of unseen plot twists, but this one actually has one!! I absolutely loved that the creatures didn’t hurt/kill/maim/eat people, but caused (probably unknowingly) utter insanity. It’s unique. I was expecting the creature Malorie came face-to-face with to drag her out of the boat & rip off her head or something, but it didn’t even persist in taking off her blindfold after she protested. Are these creatures gentle? Intelligent? Humanoid? Are they horrified at the effect they have on other intelligent life? If a book makes me think or has a great ending, it’s an excellent book, in my opinion. Bird Box accomplishes both.

As if blind people didn’t exist?. The premise was hard to embrace. This book ignores that blind people live out full lives, at least until the end of the story. The entities don’t really present a danger unless viewed (though in the movie they’re more menacing) so it was a challenge to buy into the threat. Also, the main character’s relationship with her children bordered on abusive. She didn’t even name them until the end. It had a similar feel to “A Quiet Place”, which was also riddled with big plot holes, by with sight limited rather than sound. Oh, yeah, and both miraculously had electrical power, which was weakly explained.

Horrifically Beautiful. I know it’s odd to call a horror novel beautiful and lovely, but it’s originates with the strength of the main character and the intensity of the plot. I saw the movie, but as usual, the book delves so much farther into the devastating situation Malorie endures.

Watch the movie 🤩. I have not read the book but the movie is a big fat four star loved it

It was boring.. This book was so unsatisfying. It made no sense and offered no real solution. What were the creatures? Why were the mentally ill unaffected (other than playing into the harmful trope that the mentally ill and evil and sinister by nature)? Why were animals affected at a lesser rate? Why did it seem like there was nothing ever at stake? For a post apocalyptic story, it was painfully boring. And, it seemed that way because the author was unable to create a realistic world or too lazy to do so. Just watch the movie (which I still did not like) but at least there urgency was established into the storyline

Amazing. Way better than movie, nice touch with a certain type of bird. Really loved it

Excellent!. Totally engrossing until the very end. Intense and mesmerizing! I loved it!

I watched the movie..... Ok I watched the movie didn’t read the book but the movie was good.Shut up stupid B****es that thought this was boring or gave it 1 star maybe no one likes u

Misleading!!. Book is listed under $4 but is really $12.99!

all these movies ive seen are books?!. this is a book too? omg i just founf out the netflix series ’You’ was a book. I NEED TO START READING MORE

Keeps your attention but ending is incomplete.. I chose to read the book first so I can understand the Netflix movie better. The book is engaging and the characters draw you into the story. However, the switches between timelines can be confusing and throw off the pace of the story. In addition, the book’s ending lacked a satisfactory conclusion which is the main reason for the three-star rating.

The emotion makes up for the plot holes. This is definitely worth the read. An interesting take on the apocalyptic survival genre. Avoid the sequel “Malorie” though, as this book stands better on its own.

The only good thing here is the general premise. Interesting premise and a few tense moments of the "unknown terror", but overall poor execution. Little-to-no character development, uneventful plot, and VERY basic prose. Prepare for a lot of "and the she did this. And then she did that." sentences that are almost always somehow the same length and amount of syllables. The lack of rhythm in the writing makes it frankly tough to endure. Add onto that that the plot isn’t worth enduring, and you’ve got yourself a book that probably isn’t worth your time.

Better than the movie. Much better than the movie. A very quick read.

Different, a fun and exciting read!. Not the kind of book I would normally pick up, but certainly one I couldn’t put down!

Just ok. I wanted to read the book after watching the movie on Netflix so I want to head and purchased it. I was hoping for a little expansion of the universe, more on the mythos of the creatures and further development of the characters but the book was pretty straightforward and it left me wanting more. There were too many missed opportunities throughout the book for the author to bring you further into the world he crafted but he never did. Overall it was a fine book but I wished there was more detail to it.

Amazing. One of the best books I have ever read. I couldn’t put it down!

no. no

Just like “The Happening” movie, but with blindfolds. Same as the M. Night Sha’s movie “The Happening”, but with blindfolds. Still a worth while book to read.

Amazing!!!!. I loved the book so much like the movie, I couldn’t put it down! I can’t understand how people don’t like the book, it so good! I was even watching it exactly when it hit 12:00 on New Years!

Worst book. It is the worst book ever if I could I would have gave this book -5 stars

Good Read, But... I believe Bird Box, although an enjoyable read, could have been better, there are quite a few good scenes and scenarios in the book that are written with great tension, unfortunately there’s a lot of Scenes and Scenarios lacking enough description and details leaving the reader to feel like it was just splotched in.

Better than the movie. Gripping story and so relatable. The premise is truly terrifying. I like how the story flashes forward and back, keeping me in suspense.

Bird Box. Excellent! Couldn’t put it down. Would love to see a sequel.

Loved it but I hated the way it ended but I heard that there was going to be a bird box two. Loved it but I hated the way it ended but I heard that there was going to be a bird box two

Better than the movie. This was 99999x better than the film

Bird box. Amazing Loved it

I liked it! Just a little anticlimactic. I read it because I watched the Netflix movie first and loved it! It was a good book just looking for more adrenaline like in the movie!

Loved it!. Didn’t want to put it down. Much better than the Netflix movie. The writer takes you along on a super creepy, thrilling and suspenseful ride, from start to finish. Best book I have read in a long time. Fantastic!!! Highly recommend!!

By Melanie. This was so good I wish this could have another movie and also a game I’m going to look that up

The best movie ever. I really enjoyed this is my favorite movie now

Truly amazing physiological thriller. Worth a dozen reads, this story keeps you enthralled in the suspense fully mysterious plot throughout the whole book, truly amazing writing

Amazing!!!. It was so good I finished it it 3 days and couldn’t drop the book!

You Can’t Not Look!. This was a great book. It hooked me good and I could not put it down. It has been a while since I felt that way about any book. I can always find something to be critical about, and in this case, it would have been the desire for the author to expand or more fully resolve some more plot events. All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book.

Bird Box. Good book but didn't live up to all the hype.

SAMUEL FERLDANA ANDERW MAFFIE. FRIDAY FEBRUARY 25 (2020)

Worth the read. I don’t plan to watch the movie but the premise seemed intriguing enough to spend $3 on the book. It was a page turner that I read in 2 sittings. I liked how tense the book felt in spots, it got my heart going a few times for sure!

Wow!. I finished this in a day! Such a GREAT book and completely different from the movie but in a great way! I absolutely loved it and it left me wanting more! Crazy that I also live in a small town called Ovid, Michigan. I will definitely read this again and again!

“The Mist” fans rejoice, another story hinging on the terror of the unseen. Ending left JUST enough to be desired. Suspenseful, riveting, compelling. Wonderful book.

Movie was so much better. To be honest I made it to the half way mark and decided to quit. I saw the movie and heard how different the book was so I decided to read it. I don’t care about the characters, the dialog between them is hollow and so is the storyline. Very disappointed

Just wow. I read this shortly after seeing the movie. It was truly amazing. I hated the parts about the dogs, but dogs always hit me in the heart.

Suspenseful. Could not put this book down and that's a book I've been looking for. But can we please get a sequel? After reading this I am left feeling like I want to know what's next. I want the characters to find a way to get more information and to find a way around this or something. And I'm also left feeling like i just watched a horror movie. Haven't seen the movie version yet but you know that feeling like you just want to pull your curtains closed and lock the doors and just feel totally creeped out. So despite the unanswered questions it's a pretty good book in my opinion when I'm sucked in, can't put it down and you go through the emotions with the characters.

Bird Box was phenomenal and a quick read!. Well worth the money. I’m so excited to watch the movie now. Very reasonably priced and I read it in a little over a day! Would recommend!

WOW. This book had so much suspense while reading. It had me hooked by the first page!

What a thrill ride!. Bravo!

Phenomenal. This movie/book has absolutely destroyed me and my friends but it was completely worth it. 100 out of 5 stars. Highly recommend.

Excellent. Best book everrrr

Great read. What would you do? I would have died in the beginning. I would be week. Great read

Amazing. My favourite book that I’ve read in the last few years. I can’t bring myself to watch the movie now, I don’t want to spoil the way I pictured everything I read. A real page turner.

A million times better than the movie.. I unfortunately watched the movie before I read the book and I really regret it. The movie does not and can not compare to the book.
