The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen Book Summary

“Call it The Hunger Games of Thrones. Erika Johansen’s debut novel is a genre mashup: medieval fantasy meets dystopian future. . . . The setting, combined with Johansen’s deft hand with character and plotting, really does work. . . . An addictive and enjoyable adventure. . . . The Tear is just as easy to get sucked into as Westeros or Hogwarts or Panem.” —USA Today

Magic, adventure, mystery, and romance combine in this epic debut in which a young princess must reclaim her dead mother’s throne, learn to be a ruler—and defeat the Red Queen, a powerful and malevolent sorceress determined to destroy her.

On her nineteenth birthday, Princess Kelsea Raleigh Glynn, raised in exile, sets out on a perilous journey back to the castle of her birth to ascend her rightful throne. Plain and serious, a girl who loves books and learning, Kelsea bears little resemblance to her mother, the vain and frivolous Queen Elyssa. But though she may be inexperienced and sheltered, Kelsea is not defenseless: Around her neck hangs the Tearling sapphire, a jewel of immense magical power; and accompanying her is the Queen’s Guard, a cadre of brave knights led by the enigmatic and dedicated Lazarus. Kelsea will need them all to survive a cabal of enemies who will use every weapon—from crimson-caped assassins to the darkest blood magic—to prevent her from wearing the crown.

Despite her royal blood, Kelsea feels like nothing so much as an insecure girl, a child called upon to lead a people and a kingdom about which she knows almost nothing. But what she discovers in the capital will change everything, confronting her with horrors she never imagined. An act of singular daring will throw Kelsea’s kingdom into tumult, unleashing the vengeance of the tyrannical ruler of neighboring Mortmesne: the Red Queen, a sorceress possessed of the darkest magic. Now Kelsea will begin to discover whom among the servants, aristocracy, and her own guard she can trust.

But the quest to save her kingdom and meet her destiny has only just begun—a wondrous journey of self-discovery and a trial by fire that will make her a legend . . . if she can survive.

Queen of Tearling. Wish there were more books out to continue with the story! Excellently done look forward to the next.

Interesting, Engaging, and mysterious. So much happens and the moments when you’re not holding your breath are few and far between; due to the amount of action. I enjoyed how she was able to create a new world using our current history with a Middle Ages Kung/Queen storyline. Everything about this book is engaging from the laws to the characters to the architecture and straight into the society…nothing is left untouched and Everything is still a mystery.

Not Bad. The story becomes pretty predictable but is laid out nicely and easy to read. The characters are straight forward with not a lot of information to keep up with and looking forward to the second book.

Great story. Loved it!

Don’t get attached!!!. I wish someone had given this review before I invested in this trilogy!! The first two books are good! Well developed and engaging but the third book is an utter disservice to the story. It felt like the author lost interest and just shut the story down. Don’t get attached to any of the wonderful characters that she creates because there is ZERO closure for them and the ending is very abrupt and leaves waaaaay too many loose strings and storylines unfinished. I was EXTREMELY disappointed!!

Gravitating. Very well written!!!! Eagerly waiting the sequel

Just wow. I can’t even start with this book. Honestly Kelsey is one of my all time favorite characters in ya dystopian/anarchy books. She is how I imagine myself in these situations. She is stubborn but fights for what she wants and honestly she isn’t stupid like some other female main characters I have read. Kelsey is someone who will go through mountains just to get what she wants. For her I think the pathway between right and wrong is so clear for her and even though Kelsey is insecure and makes mistake every once in a while I feel that Kelsey herself is a character that we can relate too. Plus some scene actually THE WHOLE BOOK had me admiring her. My respect for Kelsey 📈📈📈📈. The book itself was a good concept, but I stayed for Kelsey to be quite honest. Still an AMAZING BOOK!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍

Amazing. Erika knows how to weave a tale! Great series.

Clumsily Crass. I don’t know if it was the cheery cover or the fact that I’ve been reading a lot of Brandon Sanderson, but the author’s use of swear words and sexually explicit references just felt so jarring and clumsy—like the author was trying to hammer home that this is a a book for adults not teens. “Take me seriously; I’m crass.” Whereas Sanderson tackles sex slavery and tyrants who gluttonously fulfill their lusts, his world-building and characterization are so complete that he doesn’t need to drop the F or C words to somehow bolster it. So while I’m interested to find out how our young queen will defeat the Red Queen, the author’s crass word choice just immediately makes me envision someone in their apartment clickety-clacking on the keyboard instead of immersing me in a well-developed world where difficult issues are confronted and overcome. As a former high school English teacher, I guess I’m picky about the unnecessary use of swear words and sexually explicit references. But maybe its just that I’ve seen other authors tackle the same subjects and themes expertly in a way that appeals to both teens and adults.

Outstanding Story. I purchased this book on a whim, not expecting much. I'm happy to say I was very pleasantly surprised at what a wonderful book this turned out to be! The story is excellent and the characters very well written. I finished the book over a day and a half, begrudging every moment I had to put it down to attend to other matters. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

A good read. I enjoyed the book, there’s a couple moments when I would be lost but I enjoyed it overall looking forward to the next book

Holy crap, what a great book!. Entertainment Weekly raved about this book, but frankly I was not excited about the description. But the magazine continued to rave about it so much, I thought, shoot it's only 350 pages, I'll give it a go. Wow, so glad I did. Fantastic! The story is familiar, derivative of a true life figure, set in a fantasy-sci-fi world. But what struck me was the depth of character, not cliche, genuinely surprising turns in how I thought they would react; and surprisingly good prose. I found myself highlighting genuinely great descriptions, passages, and funny lines. I loved it and already pre-ordered the next book.

Riveting book. Great plot and characters! I love the strong Heroine. I hope we see more of the Fetch next book!

THIS BOOK IS AMAZING. okay to be honest i found this book on Instagram and it intrigued me soo much that i paid ma moneys and here we are i am enjoying this book alot rn and will continue the trilogy

A blockbuster. This book is so good I'm going through it a second and then probably a third time right now. The story is gripping and suspenseful. It's about a queen raised in exile for protection and claiming the thrown upon her 19th birthday though she is hunted. I found myself cheering for Kelsey and Mase is one of a kind. Very impressive - this movie had a movie deal prior to even being published with David Yates directing and Emma Watson starring as the queen. We will have to wait until November 29, 2016 for the Fate of the Tearling (author announced on Facebook). A must read!

Check out the bookstagram @bookbutterfly_. This book is slow-paced. I usually don't like slow paced books because they become boring but I LOVED ❤ this book. This book HOOKED 👀 me in and it wasn't letting me go. This book is REAL it never sugarcoated anything. It never skirt around risqué topics it told you that this happened and it made me see the world more clearly. I also love the characters and how there was elements of mystery put throughout the story !! 💖

Loved it, will make a great movie!. Best fantasy book I’ve read in ages. Couldn’t put it down, lots of at ion. Not a kid’s book though. It will make a great movie with Emma Watson as Kelsea!

Excellent!!. Fast paced and thrilling with great characters. Loved it!

An excellent work. This is an outstanding story from beginning to end.

Love it!. The characters and storyline are awesome! I can't wait for the second and third book to be released....I NEED to know what comes next!!

The Queen of the Tearling. A captivating story. The Queen of the Tearling offers adventure, action, interesting characters, and a symbolic world view that reaches into the heart of social justice as it embodies the quest for change.

The Queen of the Tearling. I loved this book and hope the second and third books of this trilogy come out soon. It was great to have a normal looking heroin as opposed to the always beautiful one. I fell in love with Kelsea, and her complicated strength mixed with her insecurities and empathy. Loved her quick wit, and that she could "hang with the guys" comfortably. I couldn't put the book down. So much adventure at a fast gallop (pun intended.) All the characters were interesting, and many of the hard characters were also lovable, while some are downright nasty. And, Who is Kelsea's father?? We'll probably have to wait until the third book to get that information. I would recommend this book to both men and women as well as teens. Well done Johansen. SLN in VA

Woah.. I really think this is one of the best series I've ever read. I didn't read these books I lived them.... Well that's at least what it felt like;)

Great language of writing and just enough description for me. This book was one of the best I have read in a long time. The story truly made such an attachment between me and the characters, full of both love, anger, and emotion. I do have to give some negative points for the language, only young adults and up should read it if they are ready, it is the only reason why I had to give it four. But the reason I didn't give it three was because it is true that kind of language and violent behavior is used in today's world and we should stand against it like this protagonist does. I recommend this book for people who are mature enough to read it and I can't wait for the sequel

Strong, believable, relatable. Finally! A female heroine who's not perfect, (perhaps a bit plump, not beautiful, gets scared, etc.) but who uses her head and her heart to lead her people. Can't wait to read more!
