The Obstacle Is the Way by Ryan Holiday Book Summary

#1 Wall Street Journal Bestseller

The Obstacle is the Way has become a cult classic, beloved by men and women around the world who apply its wisdom to become more successful at whatever they do.

Its many fans include a former governor and movie star (Arnold Schwarzenegger), a hip hop icon (LL Cool J), an Irish tennis pro (James McGee), an NBC sportscaster (Michele Tafoya), and the coaches and players of winning teams like the New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks, Chicago Cubs, and University of Texas men’s basketball team.

The book draws its inspiration from stoicism, the ancient Greek philosophy of enduring pain or adversity with perseverance and resilience. Stoics focus on the things they can control, let go of everything else, and turn every new obstacle into an opportunity to get better, stronger, tougher. As Marcus Aurelius put it nearly 2000 years ago: “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.”

Ryan Holiday shows us how some of the most successful people in history—from John D. Rockefeller to Amelia Earhart to Ulysses S. Grant to Steve Jobs—have applied stoicism to overcome difficult or even impossible situations. Their embrace of these principles ultimately mattered more than their natural intelligence, talents, or luck.

If you’re feeling frustrated, demoralized, or stuck in a rut, this book can help you turn your problems into your biggest advantages. And along the way it will inspire you with dozens of true stories of the greats from every age and era.

A Must Read!. Lots of great examples and stories!

Wow. Incredible read!!

Foundation. The lost art and foundation of being a better person.

Great read. Goes in deep while keeping the big picture at hand

Stoicism at its best. Shared the thoughts well. Very insightful

I like the thoughts.. I enjoyed the thoughts and insights.

Great introduction to stoicism. Fast read. Can be applied to any situation. Peaked my interest into more stoicism.

Cliff Notes for Living. Great book that really gives insight and to be an actionable person that holds themselves responsible.

Practice. Help separate emotion from daily decisions to lead a better more prosperous life. This book will show you the way.

Great. Accessible, Easy to read. So informative and inspiring. I recommend this to anyone.

There’s nothing good about Rommel. The book is too interested in not seeing an example through to the end. He holds up Rommel as some sort of military genius in North Africa leaving out the fact that he died by suicide at the side of Hitler after murdering his own family while hiding in a bunker. After that it’s hard to take the book seriously. Also, he really carries the water for all the Silicon Valley bros. Just read Marcus Aurelius on your own and don’t waste your time with this opinion piece on stoicism.

Great Book. Great book that I couldn’t put down. I normally don’t finish books because I lose interest or it isn’t impacting me. This book had my attention from the first page to the last! It’s a must read for people who want to live a happier life!!

Amazing. Changed my view on things. One of my favorite books

Good book.. Very inspiring read.

Excellent book, quick read. I picked this book up after seeing it on Tim Ferriss' book club recommendation, I'm glad I did. Very interesting without being pious or preachy. Great examples of great men and women in history and how they used the classics of antiquity guide them through their trials. One caveat, I listened to the Ferriss interview with the author after I bought the book and am glad I did because Mr. Holiday is certainly not a public and does absolutely nothing to bolster his position as a Stoic by publicly speaking. He has found calling and needs to stick with the written word. Why you may ask? Because he sounds like a 30 year old kid living in his parents basement, sounds very unsure of himself, too young, and has accomplishments with which to support his dispensing of Stoic wisdom. But he writes a great book and I'm sure will develop his speaking ability.

Life Changing. “Right action is the best action”.

Amazing book that everyone should read!. I will be buying this book for everyone that I love (that can read of course). I couldn’t put it down!

Life changing. Watch your life change as you read this book. Incredible -Leticia Warrior

Insightful!. A great reminder that we can overcome obstacles and succeed!

Well worth the read. Timeless wisdom to being a person of action, well worth the read and a must re-reader.

Interesting. Nice easy reading with some great reading recommendations.

Well written great book. I kept co omg across this book for some time and finally jumped into it and was immediately hooked and inspired. Ryan does a great job laying it all out in very concise and easy to understand concepts and action items. The book is Otha Zies into very short chapters which I really liked because you could easily knock a few out of short on time. More often than not, I found myself reading much more than “I had time for”. I really appreciate the reading suggestions in the back of the book as stoicism is something that is interesting me more and more the more I read and I’m looking forward to expanding my knowledge with these suggestions. Well done Ryan and thank you. I really needed this book right now.

Everyone should read. Read it over and over again. By far his finest writing.

worthwhile. Very motivating, my favorite chapter was on Lincoln, so good I had to watch the movie that night. A little redundant in spots, but worth a read and valuable to have as a resource when obstacles come your way….and they will.

Read It Several Times. This book isn’t just for the stoic mind, it’s for everyone. Ryan shares stories and anecdotes that will make you think and shift the narrative you have of your own abilities. I highly recommend reading and sharing.

Life’s Perspective. This is a great book for a matured mind. Different way of handling life’s challenges.

Great Book. At this particular point in my life I ran across this book at the perfect time. Definitely helped reshape my perception on obstacles. Showed me how I can use these road blocks to my advantage versus oh woe is me. I highly recommend adding this one to your library if you haven’t already.

Stoicism made clear.. Can’t wait to dive into the other books by Seneca, Epictetus and Marcus.

Great read!. Loved it and the simpleness of the writing. I will definitely immerse into the stoic way and purchase some of the recommended books.

Worth Every Dollar!. Highly recommend, it gives you a better way of looking at every obstacle that comes in your life whether it be depression or an unknown issue appearing in your business. I loved reading it and will definitely read it again

Exactly what I wanted. I wanted a book that offered new insight and philosophical takes on the world. It also references many historical figures ranging from the 20th century to thousands of years ago. Highly recommend.

Profound and Practical. This is a really great read. It’s one of those books you want to reread to remind yourself of the key points.

Put perspective into its place. A new a d empowering way at looking at life’s hits.

Reader. Life changing pocket bible! Wow!

Well done!. Excellent. I highly recommend.

Invigorating read. When I finished this book I felt like I could face anything and find away to come out on top. Excellent read.

Perspective changing. Fascinating book, and I’m very grateful to have read it! I work in manufacturing and It’s changed not only how I look at the not-so-enjoyable “busy work” that must be managed before getting to work on more interesting projects and challenges, but also how I interact with my team members (Unity over Self and “giving a crack at lifting the heavy end”). The authors bias is apparent several times throughout the book and only serves as a distraction from the point being made, regardless of whether you agree with it or not.

Grateful. Wonderful roadmap for living a life of purpose! It will be reread for years to keep the philosophical mojo flowing! Thank you, Ryan!

Ryan moves up a notch.... Big time. I was surprised at the how deep this book was. Almost unexpected. I’ve read all the greats (Steven Pressfield and Jack Canfield among them) and Ryan has totally moved closer to that level (IMHO). I read an old Lifehack article on him and how obsessed he’s been with writing, but had no idea how deep the subject matter was. I’m always on the lookout for stories of triumph in extremely tough situations as opposed to all the usual upbeat motivational books. This is beyond what I had hoped for. Still surprised that someone so young has repurposed this (almost forgotten) almost ancient philosophy for today. I’ve read LOTS of books over the years, but this one definately goes to the head of the class. Thank you Ryan, : >

This Is The Way. I have long been a fan of Ryan Holiday’s “The Daily Stoic.” Having read it consistently every day since January of 2020. I did not realize how pivotal it would be in helping me navigate the Pandemic. That book I thought was enough but then I was gifted this book and of course I have had so much more to learn. It reminds me of an updated version of Robert Greene’s “48 Laws of Power.” More concise and to the point. Grouped neatly into three key sections that build neatly on each other. Its brevity is what helps make it sticky. Strong historical anecdotes set the scene and deep analysis give you actionable summaries. Holiday’s style is to move you to act not just be inspired. This is a compelling book in the motivational category that is not burdened by the cliche and kitschy language of similar entries in this genre. Slowly, over the course of reading it the mantra will creep into and settle deep into your brain; The Obstacle is the Way! Or put another way, this is the way. The stoic, measured view on the world. I am looking forward to reading more by Holiday.

Excellent. Concise and inspiring.

Amazing. Amazing work.

Good Book. I loved this book! The chapters were just the right size and the content was enriching. Wort a reread.

Thank you!. Clarifying and powerful! Thank you Ryan for the education and inspiration to learn more about Stoicism and, indeed, more about myself.

Waste of time and money.. Over half way through and it’s just repetitive, boring, nonsense.

Great for business and life. The Obstacle Is The Way is a short read that took me a few weeks to read because of the enthusiasm I had for applying these great lessons.

Changed my life. These last few years I have been lost, graduating from college with a degree I don’t use. Engaged to be married and fearful of the future. Overweight and irresponsible with my finances. Ryan, holiday and the works of the stoics have helped me find a better path in life. This book along with many others has helped me tremendously. Thank you so much.

Nice book. The positive: I read lots of self improvement books & i can say ‘ the obstacle is a way ‘ became one of them i think this book is the kind of book that makes you wanna go and read it again after years of passing it helps you to go through tough situations positively, even though the book advises the reader to use the obstacle as a motivation to go forward which is a nice perspective The negative: I felt some kind a bored while reading some chapters

Definitely recommend. This book is so spot on to what I’ve been experiencing of late in my personal and professional life. It has become a great tool for me to use and look at situations through a different lens and in most situations, to see myself through them better off. This will be a great asset as I continue my personal growth and one I share with many along the way.

So many gems within this book!. Three discplines to instill into your daily life. If followed on a daily basis, there is not one obstacle that deprive your life, it can only make it better. Thanks for the great read, Ryan Holiday!

Learning a lot about stoicism.. I d recommend this book for those going through tough time. It s a must.

Solid 4. Good over all. Eventually it repeats the same message repeatedly. Read the first half and enjoy

A reference book for life.. Awesome! Cherish it, reference it and never let it go!

Life Changing. If you really read and absorb the lessons displayed in this book, it WILL effect you life and you will no longer see any obstacles as you did before. READ IT

Inspiration is the way. What a great book full of lessons. It’s motivating and inspiring. And helps us see the world differently. I recommend it.
