The Hunger Games (Hunger Games, Book One) by Suzanne Collins Book Summary

This Special Edition of The Hunger Games includes the most extensive interview Suzanne Collins has given since the publication of The Hunger Games; an absorbing behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the series; and an engaging archival conversation between Suzanne Collins and YA legend Walter Dean Myers on writing about war. The Special Edition answers many questions fans have had over the years, and gives great insight into the creation of this era-defining work.In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to death before-and survival, for her, is second nature. Still, if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

100% Recommend for kids 11+. This book is flawless, that’s the only word for it. The story is amazing, and the complexity of the plot and circumstance is remarkable for those with a mind open enough to recognize it. Unlike many people say, the violence that occurs is not at all graphic, it’s very tolerable and let’s the reader understand what’s happening without making the reader disturbed. The book does sound more intense then it is, but it’s truly not as bad as it may appear, and I highly recommend those 11+ give the book a fair chance. Although, I must warn you that once you start reading, you won’t be able to put it down. Amazing read, one of the best. This is a must read!

HAYMICTH. Five favorite characters 1. Peeta 2. Haymitch 3. Katniss 4.Finnic 5. Cinna Spoilers for the last book: People i dont like 1. GALE DUH NOONE LIKES GALE 2. President snow 3. Every one else Double suicide is my favorite part in this book

Love it. I love all of the charters they all have so much to them . I will say Peeta it not deserve what happens in the end katinss could have waited a bit longer .

YAASSSQUUEEEENNNN. I loved this book. Still do. The writing is great and you can definitely comment with the characters!

AMONGUS. Rick rolled

And the best character award goes to:. Flying squirrel extraordinaire, Rue.

BEST BOOK EVER. (This contains spoilers!) Having read the entire trilogy, I can say this: Katniss ends up with the right guy. I know everyone keeps saying how she should have ended up with Gale, but I believe she made the right choice. 1. Peeta is extremely kind and warm hearted: he loved Katniss unconditionally even with all of her faults. (Katniss also admits to this in the book). 2. Peeta risked his life for Katniss: in Catching Fire, he volunteered as tribute in order to protect Katniss in the arena. 3. Peeta always had Katniss’s best interests at heart: in the first book before their relationship developed, he fabricated a whole story about his love for her, just so that she would have better odds at surviving and getting sponsors. 4. Probably the strongest reason of all of them: at least the actor who plays Peeta in the movies didn’t cheat on his real life girlfriend *ahem* (what Liam did to Miley)

Phenomenal book. I read these books half hazardous in middle school years ago, and through Apple Books I found them again and have fallen completely in love with the series

Love it. I have never read a book series more than once, but I have read the Hunger Games three time!! I love the characters and the hole idea. So unique and fascinating. Beautiful work Suzan Collens

Yes. Is very very suspenseful yes… please do read it if you can, this is what’s gonna eventually happen to the world XD just joking I mean.. we are not stupid enough to start a nuclear war now are we? Hehehe😅. No like seriously, don’t fight a nuclear war for gods sake… but like yea good book! 5 ⭐️ 👏 anyways, keep up the good work Suzanne!

Hunger Games. Amazing, just amazing

BETTER THAN THE MOVIE. this was such a fast read! I loved the word choice and the fast paced nature of the book. I have always loved the movie series but never got around to reading the book until now. if you love the Hunger Games then I highly recommend!

The Peeta problem. (This has some spoilers so read at your own risk) I’ve read all the books so I get to say this. Why!? Why!? Why, does everyone like Peeta so much? He is just a wimp who throws bread. Seriously, Katniss has done everything for Peeta and he has done NOTHING back. Yet, she still picks him even when Gale has done everything for her. He would’ve taken care of Katniss’ family even when he has his own and they are barely surviving. And he wouldn’t expect Katniss helping him and his family in Catching Fire because he is a man. And he saved Prim twice plus some of district twelve. And what has Peeta done? Nothing. People will say that Gale shouldn’t gotten mad at Katniss when she returned from the Games but, if you were in Gales shoes… Your best friend who you have liked forever but never told her because you respect her has been kissing up a storm with some other guy who has never tried caring for her and she says it was all ‘for show’ So yeah, Gale has a right to be mad! I do understand one thing that would make Katniss choose Peeta over Gale. Gale had helped make the parachute-bombs that killed Prim. But he would NEVER had helped with those if they would hurt Prim. And I’m not saying death wasn’t a big deal, it was. But other than that give me four good reasons that explain why Katniss should’ve picked Peeta, I’m waiting.

The Hunger Games. I absolutely loved this book! I finished it in a matter of a week, which is surprising because I’m not usually a fast reader unless I’m constantly reading a book, which I was for this book. I definitely recommend this book to any one who likes fantasy books like Harry Potter (like me).

LOVEDD. such a good book especially if you watched the movies!! you can see the differences and similarities. overall it’s such a good book/series!

AMAMZING. This book is AMAZING! Probably one of my favorite books of all time! This book has you on your toes the whole way. I couldn’t put the book down! All of my favorite characters died (except for katniss and gale) Rue,Thresh, and fox face. Ok this is my opinion but Peeta is getting so much love when literally Gale has been with Katniss her entire life! Like ummm… Yet still amazing book I love it so much and I recommend it to pretty much everyone!

I enjoyed it.. So far the first book I have finished in books and I loved it! I watched the movie and I must say the book is better. I want the read the second book in the series now.

The Hunger Games. Fantastic!!!

READ IT. I love this book sooooooo much! It’s suspenseful and amazing! I’m so excited to read catching fire!!!

best dystopian book ever written. this book and book series have been such an incredible help for me. ever since i started reading i’ve always had a difficult time finding enjoyable books to read. this book and series and are a definite must read for avid readers and even to people who rarely touch books.

Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes AMOGUS. I read when I was 7 and was soooo attached to it. Now 5 years later I still can’t get my head out of it! I recommend you read Suzanne Collins’s other books such as A Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes. It really gives the inside scoop of what’s going on in President Snow’s head at the time of Katniss. Would recommend.

Love!!!. The book is A fun and easy read. I love the films!

Wow. I only read the sample and I was hooked! Unfortunately, my mother probably won’t let me get the book because I am 11 and the genre is young adult. Still, this book seems great and I wish the sample was longer. I am currently a huge fan of Wings of Fire by Tui. T Sutherland and just by reading the sample I can tell I will be a fan of this one too. Also I saw in a review [SPOILER ALERT] That Rue dies. Why do people put spoilers without a warning? As soon as I met Rue in the books I think “Thats the girl who dies.” This is why I hate spoilers it ruins the experience I wanted to be surprised if a character dies instead im going to be yawning because I already knew it would happen. People who spoil, I hope you have a bad day :) I probably shouldn’t be this upset but COME ON have common sense maybe instead of carelessly spoiling a major scene in the book you could have at least hinted at it or said something like “My favorite character died.” At least then I wouldn’t have known who. I always get spoiled for shows, movies, and books I hate it MOST when it’s books since I read so much. Like please think before you speak or in this instance type.

SPOILER ALERT. 💥This review spoils the whole book so read at your own risk :)💥 In this review I will write things I liked about this book and things I didn’t like. At the end of the review I will state my top 5 favorite characters. THINGS I LIKED (no particular order) 1. Katniss and Peeta’s attempted double suicide 2. Katniss volunteering for Prim at the reaping 3. Katniss becoming Rue’s ally 4. Katniss yelling Peeta’s name after Claudius Templesmith said that 2 people from one district can win 5. When Katniss meets Cinna 6. Peeta publicly declaring his love for Katniss THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE (no particular order) 1. Effie Trinket obsessing over everything being on time 2. The shallowness of Katniss’s prep team 3. President Snow FAVORITE CHARACTERS 1. Katniss 2. Haymitch 3. Rue 4. Cinna 5. Peeta

SO GOOD. PERFECT WRITING PERFECT PLOT GOOD CLIFFHANGER ENDING. IMMACULATE.

🤯😍😀. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Amazing. So beautifully written. I read it in a day and a half, unable to put it down! There are some sad/death scenes, but everything else balances out, so it could hardly be called a ‘dark book’. So well written. Could not and would not put it down 😂

I’m going to write a fan fiction (The twist). Aspen stared bleakly out of the train as trees and bushes blurred by. As much as she hated it her and her brother, Egret, has been picked this year. “Aspen!” Egret called. “Look! They’ve got DONUTS.” He basically sprinted over to her and shoved one in her face. “Egret, I do it care. Go find Raymond or Devia.” She snapped. That’s when a thick southern accent came from the speakers. “Oh dah-lines! Time to meet your opponentz!” That’s when 22 people entered their cart. Lady ProngHorn followed. “From district 1, Aspen and Egret.” Clapping. “District 2, Raini and Sage,” More clapping. “District 3, Leo and Thria, District 4, Amia and Clover,” and so on. It was boring and Aspen fell asleep at district four. In her dream she dreamt of Egret being stabbed in the stomach like a Kabob by Leo. Then stabbed twice in the head. What did this dream mean? Tell me if it’s good. I might continue it. Also descriptions. Name: Aspen May Allflower Appearance: Aspen is a short white girl with long blonde hair and blue eyes. She has a long scar on her claf and her eye brow. Family: Mom: Wearia Doe Allflower Dad: Josh Kelce Allflower Brother: Egret Weasel Allflower Hobbies: Hunting, reading, and running Name: Egret Weasel Allflower Appearance: a tall white boy with dark curly hair and green eyes. A light scar on his lip Family: Mom: Wearia Doe Allflower Dad: Josh Kelce Allflower Sister: Aspen May Allflower Hobbies: art, climbing, and sleeping. Anyone got any ideas for more characters? I might add them in if I like them. Also don’t hate on me for this lol bye ✌🏼 Signing out -Aspen of District 1 -IcePaw of ShadeClan -Fall of the IceWings

OMG OMG OMG!. I absolutely LOVED the book! It has so much suspense and action! This book will make you feel excited, sad, happy and all the above! Definitely read, you will not regret it!

Never ever read a book like it. It is my favorite book and it is just so good!!!!!!!!

Top tier YA novel. The Hunger Games series and it’s reception by the public has always been an excellent example of dystopian storytelling and reception. It has high re-readability and in my opinion has excellent flow. I found Katniss very easy to relate to, and President Snow is a fantastic villain.

AWMAWZONG. I loveeee this book! I cried 4 times over how it rly expresses the real world and how the government truly doesn’t care. I think that the book is way better then the movie! I recommend it for like 14+ because it is quite a disturbing book somewhat.

BEST SERIES EVER 😻. I love this book series so much and it’s mind-blowingly awesome. I’m only 10 and this was a great read. I feel like the character I relate to most was Rue. I cried so much [SPOILER ALERT] when she died. Happy and sad tears. That moment was so moving and it was truly incredible and heartwarming. I really recommend the series. I’m on book 3 (Mockingjay) currently. This series is amazing and I’ve been staying up till like 2 am reading because it’s actually too good. Set a timer so you don’t end up pulling an all-nighter because of a book. Tbh the hunger games sounds kinda fun if the tributes respawned like Roblox people. Wouldn’t you agree? Anyway YOU HAVE TO READ IT!!! I like book 1 the best because it’s always the first book is the best. There are some parts that COULD seem disturbing, but not anything to worry about. No swear words or anything so it’s pretty good for like tweens and young adults. It’s a great book for middle schoolers and beyond, but you can still read it in elementary. Some things I would love to see though would be: 1. I really want to see Katniss dump Peeta because I just don’t feel that their love is right. 2. I want a small book alongside this series from Peeta’s perspective. {end of list}. I really love all the tension and suspense that builds up while reading and I love all the characterization that happens in this story. One of my favorite parts of the story [SPOILER ALERT] is when Katniss pulls out the berries and they try to commit a double suicide. Of course that went well with the capitol!🙄😏 This book makes you appreciate what you have and why you should be grateful for it. I really recommend this book it is the best book I’ve ever read. Thank you for reading this (very long) review! I hope you enjoy the book! “May the odds be ever in your favor…” Well they were sure in mine! -Leez PS: WHYYY DID YOU HAVE TO SPOIL A DETH, CATSRULEFOREVER

best book ever. best book ever

The Best. This is the best book I have ever read. You will fall in love with the characters and want to be there.

Really interesting. This is a really nice book, I read the entire series. It is kid of dark with all the murderous kids chasing each other, but it does have a little bit of humor. SPOILER ALERT!PLEASE BACK OFF IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO READ SPOILERS! my favorite part about shooting the apple is when katniss says “thank you for your consideration” and even better, haymitch’s reaction. I like the scenes with caesar flickerman however you say his name. And the way Katniss talks in public compared to Peeta. It took me a long time to fully accept all these characters like rue and stuff were going to die. I miss them, I wish they could still be in the series.

Great Story, Strange pacing. I really did love this book and thought the concept and world building were excellent. The only issue I found is that the first third dragged quite a bit for me personally.

If you wanna be wowed, read this.. I’m sure most people have heard of this book, and have seen reviews about it. This was the second series that I ever read while getting into reading, and it definitely helped to make my hobby grow! This book is perfect for all reading statuses. Whether you have been reading for years, and you’re an adult, or you are just getting into it, I think that you will enjoy it! The plot is so unique and riveting. The characters are so interesting to get to know. There is some romance, but nothing inappropriate, or not kid friendly! I read this while I was in middle school, and I’m in high school currently. Even now, I can still remember the plot, and how some of the lines made me feel! It has some great messages as well. Overall, I would suggest this book to honestly anyone, so I would highly suggest that YOU read it!

Amazing. Well overall I thought this was gonna be the worst book ever. But when I first opened it to chapter 1 I couldn’t put it down it was amazing!!! Suzanne Collins did a great job on this book I can’t wait to see if there’s more (possibly not but I hope!!) books to come!! Overall DO NOT JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER! This is amazing just gonna say and recommend to young readers round the globe who like thrillers and action packed books 😃😃😃😃😃

Its good. The book was really good but katniss gotta be single pringleee

Amazing. I loved it! I read this book with some friends in a book club and we all loved it so much. I love the suspense and I couldn’t stop reading. There is some gore and sad/death scenes (only a couple). And I myself do not like those kind of scenes and so I just skipped those parts. Books are really great! Definitely recommend this book for ages 10+!

Amazing book.. This book was SO GOOD. The movie did it dirty, I feel like. LIKE PEETA’S LEG???? What in the paper cut was that??!! My favorite character is Peeta Chip. The third book- Ah-ah-ah. I’m not spoiling book 3 for you guys. But if you’ve read it, then you know what I’m talking about (hopefully). Rue 😭😭. Her fantastic flying squirrel days were numbered. You will be remembered *proceeds to to the three-fingered kiss*. Anyway, this book and the whole series was super good. Thanks for reading!!

BEST BOOK EVER. My 6th grade teacher taught us about this book so I wanted to read it I was so obsessed with this book I couldn't put it down.

Love it!. I LOVE this book! It’s so full of danger with the barest hint of romance that will keep you reading. This is definitely my kind of book! If you are looking for your next great read, congratulations, you just found it.

What a book.... The fast paced story line of this read kept me engaged and left my mind wandering even when I put the book down.

Incredible Read!. Having watched the movie, I wish I read the book first. The book and the movie are equally as good, but I feel there are things in each that should’ve been included in the other. I love reading the book because I could picture everything as if it were happening in front of me. The descriptions were amazing on their own, but the empathy I have for Katniss and Peeta? Outstanding. A job well done. I wish I could read this from his perspective. For anyone who hasn’t watched or read either, this is a MUST read. Will definitely have you appreciating your current circumstances.

Hi. I love this trilogy so much but rues and cinnas deaths were sad. I almost cried. Amazing book. 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000/5 ⭐️

Amazing. Hi I am Katy and I am currently ten, I will tur 11 may 30 th, thi book is absolutely amazing I have only read the first book because I got it from my mom because she had it when she was young and I just love it I’ve watched all of the movies it is my favorite book in my favorite movie and all the time I have Harry Potter well I haven’t read Harry Potter but I’ve seen the movies of Harry Potter and I think the book is a bit better than the movie because you get more detail and what’s actually going on and in the movie they like cut some things out but they also add some things in the movie I just really love this book I think it’s amazing I definitely recommend to new readers out there I have not bought it yet but I have the actual books at home it is a very good book I recommend it 100% I hope you like it bye-bye now!😁😁😊😊😊😊

OMGOMG SIMP RUE <333. SO PEETAS LEG NOW WHY CATO?!?! this is such a good book!’!!!!! LIKE the plot is crafted so well like IN THE RUINS OF NORTH AMERICA and the hunger games is rlly intriguing to read but its kinda sad that MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS KEEP DYING 😭 RIP rue <3333 and foxface and clove and …. YEaaa anyway im only on book 2 SO NO SPOILERS PLS <333 plus IF YOU SHIP KATNISS X GALE NEVER SPEAK TO ME AGAIN. Peeta (bread boy) + katniss (girl on fire) = TOAST and everyone wants toast right?? ANYWAY THIS BOOK IS SO GOOD U NEED TO READ IT <33 except I knew katniss was gonna win bc why would there be a second book? #plotarmor PLUS THE AVOX girl is sosososososos nice and i feel so bad that her tongue was cut off :(( OK ANYWAY BYE

Amazing!!! Couldn’t put it down. The hunger games is a suspenseful, interesting, beautiful book. I read it in 3 days!!! It’s one of those books the whole time your thinking “this is so unfair!” But there’s nothing the reader can do except hope the characters will change it. Kids are forced to fight to the death in a horrible arena. My fav character is rue I’m not gonna spoil anything but I love rue!!!! Peeta is soooo annoying!!!!!! This book is kinda bloody so I’d recommend ages 12-17 or something like that. Also the book ends on an off note and it’ll make you want to get the second one so make sure you have a way to get the second one as well (i haven’t read the second one so I’m not recommending it) I you like this book read the giver!!!! It’s the best book in the world and it has similar themes to this book!!!! Great book get it you won’t be sorry!

I LOVE THIS. This book is the best book ever made my favourite series. I am in love with this book. All my friends say that it is soooo annoying how in love I am with this book

Intense!. This dark and gruesome, edge-of-the-seat novel is amazing for people who want an exiting read. Suzanne Collins, how?

If the Capitol had been smarter…. I told everyone around me to read it years before the movie… This book is amazing. Although, if the Capitol had just been nice and accepting, they wouldn't have had this problem. …and after the movie comes out, everybody tells me, "Oh, you should read the book. It's great."

Epic. You heard me.

😘😘😘😘😂😂😂😂🙀🙀🙀🙀😋😋😋😮😧😄. I love the book. I've read them over and over. Defiantly something you will not be able to put down. Amazing Suzanne Collins. You are a true inspiration!

Not as good as Harry Potter. Love this book, but Seneca Crane was in the movie and they don't mention him until Catching Fire, in one sentence.

An outstanding book. Truly amazing the depth that this book has the detail and how it reflects on today world (2019) when you read this book you sucked in and you feel as through you are in the arena with Katniss

.... Good

🙀🙀🙀🙀🙀🙀. I think that anyone who reads my review of this book should read this book is so good I .........

5/5. I am in awe. This book will take you on an adventure throughout the story of a young girl named Katniss. Made me cry several times. Very emotional and thrilling. I definitely recommend. I can guarantee you will love this! Work of art from heaven!!!!!!!!!!

AMAZING. Read it now

Amazing book!. Read it once 10 years ago and again this past few days. So good and worth it to come back too! The story evolves with time especially for me as I aged from a teen to a young adult and for me I got to experience different themes of love and tension this time as opposed to just the bloody mess which is the hunger games. Very good read!

One of the best series ever written. This series is just absolutely amazing! I’m totally obsessed with this series! I’m also a total Everlark shipper ( katniss + peeta 4 eva )! I totally recommend this to every person on the planet who is at least 10+. If you’re under 10 it’s pretty violent and scary.
