Not That Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham & Joana Avillez Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Includes two new essays!

NAMED ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY MICHIKO KAKUTANI, THE NEW YORK TIMES • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY BUZZFEED, THE GLOBE AND MAIL, AND LIBRARY JOURNAL

For readers of Nora Ephron, Tina Fey, and David Sedaris, this hilarious, wise, and fiercely candid collection of personal essays establishes Lena Dunham—the acclaimed creator, producer, and star of HBO’s Girls—as one of the most original young talents writing today.

In Not That Kind of Girl, Dunham illuminates the experiences that are part of making one’s way in the world: falling in love, feeling alone, being ten pounds overweight despite eating only health food, having to prove yourself in a room full of men twice your age, finding true love, and most of all, having the guts to believe that your story is one that deserves to be told.

“Take My Virginity (No Really, Take It)” is the account of Dunham’s first time, and how her expectations of sex didn’t quite live up to the actual event (“No floodgate had been opened, no vault of true womanhood unlocked”); “Girls & Jerks” explores her former attraction to less-than-nice guys—guys who had perfected the “dynamic of disrespect” she found so intriguing; “Is This Even Real?” is a meditation on her lifelong obsession with death and dying—what she calls her “genetically predestined morbidity.” And in “I Didn’t F*** Them, but They Yelled at Me,” she imagines the tell-all she will write when she is eighty and past caring, able to reflect honestly on the sexism and condescension she has encountered in Hollywood, where women are “treated like the paper thingies that protect glasses in hotel bathrooms—necessary but infinitely disposable.”

Exuberant, moving, and keenly observed, Not That Kind of Girl is a series of dispatches from the frontlines of the struggle that is growing up. “I’m already predicting my future shame at thinking I had anything to offer you,” Dunham writes. “But if I can take what I’ve learned and make one menial job easier for you, or prevent you from having the kind of sex where you feel you must keep your sneakers on in case you want to run away during the act, then every misstep of mine will have been worthwhile.”

Praise for Not That Kind of Girl

“The gifted Ms. Dunham not only writes with observant precision, but also brings a measure of perspective, nostalgia and an older person’s sort of wisdom to her portrait of her (not all that much) younger self and her world. . . . As acute and heartfelt as it is funny.”—Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times

“It’s not Lena Dunham’s candor that makes me gasp. Rather, it’s her writing—which is full of surprises where you least expect them. A fine, subversive book.”—David Sedaris

“This book should be required reading for anyone who thinks they understand the experience of being a young woman in our culture. I thought I knew the author rather well, and I found many (not altogether welcome) surprises.”—Carroll Dunham

“Witty, illuminating, maddening, bracingly bleak . . . [Dunham] is a genuine artist, and a disturber of the order.”—The Atlantic

Made me a Dunham fan!. Before reading this book, I wouldn't have called myself a Lena Dunham fan. I watched a few episodes of Girls at some point, but it was a bit much for me. I didn't plan on reading Not That Kind of Girl, but iBooks ran a special and I'd just read Tina Fey's Bossypants. I really enjoyed Dunham's stories! The format makes for an easy read, and the essays are engrossing, efficient, and truthful. Dunham doesn't give advice or tell you how to live your life, she just tells her own story. It's not excessively heavy or serious, but it's not one big comedy sketch either. I thought the book was very balanced, and I flew through it in a couple of days. While I was surprised to find that Dunham and I actually have a lot of things in common, I really enjoyed learning about her life. It was a glimpse into a completely different world. She grew up in a very open and liberal family in New York, and I've lived my whole life in super conservative Texas. I have much more respect for Dunham after reading Not That Kind of Girl. Recommended for fans of comedic memoirs or the HBO show Girls! (Be warned: lots of talk about sex in this book!)

Great!. I loved this whole book!

Honest female humor, raw fun.. Praying Lena writes more books. I'm inspired to write but could never create something as humble & fun as this read.

Not That Kind of Girl. Although I love "Girls", her HBO series, I must admit that I wasn't thrilled with Lena Dunham's book. Not as funny as I expected and way too disjointed. Difficult to follow and enjoy.

Loved. Amazingly funny-cried laughed and enjoyed this treasure of a book ----- favorite section was "Therapy and Me" love you Lena and this book!

Junk. Lies, propaganda, and raw B.S. thinly disguised as truth. Agenda driven drivel. Don't waste your money or time.

I loved this book so much!. I am obsessed with Lena! Girls is one of the best shows ever created and the fact that she does almost everything part of it at such a young age is amazing. She inspiring to me as someone who is wants to write and make a difference in someone's life because of it. This book warmed my heart and I love her for it, I hope Girls never ends! Thanx for all your wonderful work Lena, I am such an admirer.

Amazing. She captures every woman's thoughts, even the ones we form admit. Perfectly brilliant in the most down to earth way. Love her and love this book-- keep on rocking Lena.

So relatable. As a 20 something year old girl, all of these essays really hit home, in both flow and content. One of those books that makes you feel like you're not alone. Really captures the selfishness of youth and the journey of adolescence into adulthood.

Shame on Apple. This book should be removed from your 'Best of 2014' list!

Light and Fun. Lena writes with a unique flare that keep things interesting. She's brash but not too brash, quirky but not too quirky...I take that back. She's crazy, and I love it.

Lena is a goddess. I love seeing the correlation between the stories that I have already seen in her film works and her personal stories that she lays out in this book. They are all very directly linked. I adore Lena and I loved stepping into her life a bit. I think this book is an important glimpse into the life of a modern women; Lena's thoughts, feelings and experiences are beautifully written in a essay form. This book just solidifies the fact that all women's voices and life experiences are valid and important. I really respect her because she is so unapologetically herself on film, in her screenwriting and in this book. After reading this book I felt like I had lived a thousand lives, drank way too much coffee and got hugged by Lena a lot.

For Fans of HBO's "Girls", This is a MUST READ. In this book, Lena Dunham provides an unflinching portrait of her life, and allows us to see all of the gritty details that come along with growing up in 21st century America as a woman. In many regards, this book is a companion piece to Dunham's show "Girls" as we can see many of the influences that went into storylines of the show. Overall, this book is witty, well-written, and a great look into the enigmatic woman that is Lena Dunham.

This girl has issues. Some of these issues I share with her. I am encouraged that she seems to have made a career and a life for herself. Thank you, Lena. I was entertained, and sometimes saddened by your story.

Shouldn’t this book be listed in fiction?. If her gigantic gaudy arm tattoo is not evidence enough, the overtly untrue “Raped by a Republican” chapter in this book clearly shows she is one very disturbed person.

Yes!. I couldn't put it down. So funny! Love her and this amazing book!

Since when is lying considered non-fiction?. I guess lying is in, truth is out.

Not that kind of girl. Refreshing how honest Lena is...I find it extremely brave to be this honest. Even at the expense of her family members and her reputation. Her truth hurts and shocked folks, but comedy comes from those places. ACE! ~ Laeticia R

Nothing less than one star?. Thought I was reading a biography. Turns out it was politically motivated, mean-spirited tripe (aka, libelous fiction). Who knew?

Not That Kind of Girl. I loved it!! It was so honest and refreshing. As a young adult "figuring it out" it was so relatable!!

Handy. Unfortunately for the digital format, one cannot make the most use of this book as otherwise. As a result, I do recommend borrowing this book from someone who has paid for the print version in case you're cold and have a fireplace nearby (for those who aren’t in need of that self-esteem booster). I was inspired by a scene in Dances With Wolves - soldiers reading the journal - to find another decent use for the printed edition. Just be sure not to purchase it yourself unless the cover price is worth the principle in making the aforementioned uses out of it. And thank you Lena Dunham. You’re giving me another reason to save some money by unsubscribing to HBO.

For the everyday Millennial. A delightful and truly revelational compilation of moments in time.

Don't waste your money. I ignored the bad reviews and bought this book because I like Girls and Lena Dunham, I also usually don't like to take other people's opinions into account when I choose a book. I was wrong to do that this time. I'm not even 30 pages in and I'm finding myself skipping paragraphs because the content is so juvenile and ridiculous. It's never a good sign when you have to convince yourself to open a book. Don't waste your money.

Not that kind of girl. I was very disappointed. Ms. Dunham is a good writer. It's too bad she wastes her gift to write about things that are so crass.

Ummm What??. What the hell was the point of this book? This isn't a book about what she has learned this is a book about every little stupid thought she has ever had which few people can even relate to. Waste of my time and money!!

Wow. This was a great book. It was very reminiscent of my own childhood and young adulthood. So glad I'm not the only one. A must read for women who felt like maybe they just didn't quite fit into society how they were "supposed to"

Not Impressed. A narcissistic train wreck. Really unimpressed with the writing and grossed out at what Lena Dunham considers interesting and worth writing about. People who exalt her and this book so highly shock me, how shallow and stupid are they?

She MOLESTED her little sister. This is sickening.

Great book. Lena is able to pinpoint her experiences and describe them in a way I can completely relate to and identify with in many ways. She has a really great grasp and perspective on her life and all the events she recounts, I would never even think to remember the details she writes about but she has helped me remember, and it has given me tremendous insight. as a young woman/human growing up in this world, I respect and love this book. Lena is inspiring!

Great book. This book is a wonderful insight into Lena Dunham's brain. Great to buy if you are a Girls fan, or have seen Tiny Furniture, or like reading about slightly neurotic and interesting people growing up.

Idiots love this book!. Knowing that the author is a liar who destroyed the reputation and career of an innocent man I have refused to buy or read this book. Reading these reviews I have learned that the people who disliked the book are intelligent and articulate. The people who like it can't spell and use apostrophes when pluralizing words. Lena Dunham is a pig and her fans are idiots.

If you loved the HBO series GIRLS you'll love this book!. Lena Dunham is amazing, funny and so talented. This was such a great book and a fun read. I can't remember the last time I laughed so much at a book.

Nobody cares!. I don't know if I like or loathe this book. It was a page turner but made me angry and annoyed. Like a younger cousin who plops down next to you at a wedding and breathlessly and clumsily must tell you her life story focusing almost entirely on her dysfunctional sexual exploits.

Honestly entertaining!. Thank you for sharing part of your life with your fans. You are a very talented young lady. I relate to a lot of your experiences. Thanks again and I hope you continue to share your talent with us.

Gold. Lena nails it. Well written with perfect narration; this book is one of the best!

When is lying non-fiction?. She rapes her sister and lies about being raped in college and gets published? Shameful woman and very evil.

What just happened?. Very difficult to follow. Would not recommend.

Great work. Read this- you will not be sorry. Lena is an incredible writer and honest in her work.

Negative stars.... The fact that Lena Dunham is a sociopath aside, her writing really is awful. Oh Lena! You really shouldn’t have.

Sometimes light, easy read. Dunham is a great writer. I'm very much a fan of hers and this book helped me understand Girls and how her experiences made way into the show. I read this in a couple of days on vacation. Will definitely read her next book!

THANK YOU LENA. This book is absolutely perfect! Lena is exactly the kind of role model and mentor women in their 20's need! She is brutally honest about what it's like to take on life as a woman and tells her own personal tales exactly as they are; good, bad, embarrassing or beautiful. This book inspires me to be more comfortable just being me, and that in itself is the greatest gift a twenty-something girl can receive. Thank you Lena for making me feel accepted and perfect in my imperfections! It's wonderful to know I'm not alone!

Unsatisfying. I love love love the show GIRLS mainly for the narrative. I was looking for the same in this book. I didn't receive it. The book was hard to follow and I felt like Lena was trying to make herself sound like a little weird freak, but she's not any weirder than the next kid. I guess I'll just stick to Lena's show and features.

I Wanted to Love It. Horribly shallow and utterly boring. An excellent example of an entitled self-obsessed hypochondriac coddled by major network TV into believing she has experiences worth sharing. No one should read this ever again. Her stories are annoying, vapid and disgusting (and not in the interesting way-- in the I'm disgusted with you as a human being way). Not to mention her chapter entitled 'Rape' outlines when she got drunk at a party, made out with a renowned campus creep and dragged him back to her dorm room then proceeded to pull off his pants (never saying No) and regret he fingered her later. It makes strong women with meaningful causes (and actual rape victims) look bad. It got one star because it has a nice cover.

Dry Humor. I loved ‘Girls’, but I guess I prefer Lena’s humor and artistic style on the screen. I became bored reading it.

Thank you Lena. For being that girl. Witty. Brilliant.

Disappointed. It would've been nice to hear about her career, working on girls, etc. Three fourths was just about uncomfortable sexual experiences.

Thank you!. Great read, entertaining, honest, raw and real. Life goal is to be as open and raw as Lena Dunham is in this book.

Not That Kind of Girl. Yes, you are. Very disappointing.

Not bad, not amazing. I liked this book, and Dunham does a great job hooking your interest from the get-go. The detail is impeccable and emotions raw... Very interesting to hear the perspective of someone who suffered from mental health issues and so eloquently share her experiences and honest feelings. The ending fell a little short for me. The build up with all the drama and craziness in the first part of the book was well done, but the last chapter felt slightly rushed and vague. Still enjoyed the book, and I'm a huge fan of Dunham and her work.

Who cares?. I agree with the other reviewers and wish I would have read all of the reviews before buying. I just didn't care about anything in here and found myself skipping whole chapters. Wish I could get my money back, or at least those hours of my life I just lost. Hard to follow and simply uninteresting. And I like the show, just NOT this book.
