Winter Street by Elin Hilderbrand Book Summary

Cozy up with New York Times bestselling author Elin Hilderbrand's first Christmas novel, hailed “a diverting tale… filled with humor, romance, and realism” by USA Today, in which a family gathers on Nantucket for a holiday filled with chaos, caroling, and cheer.

Kelley Quinn is the owner of Nantucket's Winter Street Inn and the proud father of four, all of them grown and living in varying states of disarray. Patrick, the eldest, is a hedge fund manager with a guilty conscience. Kevin, a bartender, is secretly sleeping with a French housekeeper named Isabelle. Ava, a school teacher, is finally dating the perfect guy but can't get him to commit. And Bart, the youngest and only child of Kelley's second marriage to Mitzi, has recently shocked everyone by joining the Marines.

As Christmas approaches, Kelley is looking forward to getting the family together for some quality time at the inn. But when he walks in on Mitzi kissing Santa Claus (or the guy who's playing Santa at the inn's annual party), utter chaos descends. With the three older children each reeling in their own dramas and Bart unreachable in Afghanistan, it might be up to Kelley's ex-wife, nightly news anchor Margaret Quinn, to save Christmas at the Winter Street Inn.

Before the mulled cider is gone, the delightfully dysfunctional Quinn family will survive a love triangle, an unplanned pregnancy, a federal crime, a small house fire, many shots of whiskey, and endless rounds of Christmas caroling, in this heart-warming novel about coming home for the holidays.

Family and togetherness - a beautiful story. As always a page turner. Characters come alive, and the mention of prior books Nantucket characters make the reader feel as though reading about old familiar friends. The climax, although I understand why some think it not up to the author's storytelling; I understand it and truly feel it was the only way to leave off. It is a story of family, of love, of hurt, and of unconditional love. As always I enjoy the author's skillful writing and look forward to more Nantucket stories.

Nantucket Christmas with Family. I really enjoyed this book because it definitely got me in the Christmas Spirit! Everybody’s family has different traditions that make Christmas every year and reading the about the Quinn’s interesting to say the least Christmas Weekend was hilarious and heart warming. Definitely excited to read the next books to come.

AudioBook Review: Stars: Overall: 3 Narration: 4 Story: 2. I was excited to see a holiday story set on Nantucket, I love the islands and coast, and the setting itself is a lovely place for the holidays. I was not expecting a super heart-warming story from the blurb, but the ‘chatter’ about Hilderbrand’s characters being intriguing and engaging was a major selling point. A story that focuses on a dysfunctional family that has come together over a 3 day span ending with Christmas dinner had many places where scenes and issues will feel familiar: those particular issues that are year-round but seem to become more acute in the holidays. Whether it is the ‘Rockwell-esque’ imagery we all hold as ideal and can never attain, or the issues are so all-encompassing that we are destined to fail, I’m never quite sure, but this story is one long downhill slide of everything you shouldn’t have happen in the holidays. Sadly the Quinn family felt more ‘close knit’ because of blood and obligation, rather than true sharing and caring. Sure, they love each other, but there wasn’t a moment when I felt a true connection or emotion from any of the characters: each was aware of their own failings and issues, but none had a plan or a solid thought as to how to improve things. Insets from each perspective, we see the three days unfold with their own prejudices and judgments, and behind their own veils of self-absorption. What I didn’t get was any sort of emotional pull or draw – in a crafting technique that is usually unfailing in the impact for a reader. Even more discouraging for me, as a listener, was the lack of solid conclusion – the book ended with no resolutions to speak of, hinting at more to come as each of the family members starts to deal with their issues. As a reader, this is a disappointment, not having a sense that anyone found resolution. The saving grace in this AudioBook for me was the narration from Erin Bennett. Her modulation, tone and clarity were spot on, with gradual and subtle inflections, pitch changes and addition of emotional overlay to highlight the characters and words on the pages. My first encounter with her work, and it will not be the last. In short, this was a miss for me in all but narration. I received an AudioBook copy of the title from Hachette Audio for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

Bummed. She is my favorite author and I have read all of her books twice. This book felt sloppy and rushed. It didn't feel like a "cliff hanger" as much as a person who didn't have enough time to develop characters properly and enough time to finish her book. Disappointed.

What Happened?. Did I miss something here? Was this a short little prequel to something more substantial coming? Was she in a rush? Disappointing, rushed and disorganized ending. Would not recommend this one, but it's too bad because it had so much more potential...

Not my favorite. I was so excited to read this during my Christmas vacation in the Caribbean. I typically adore Elin's works, but this sadly didn't cut it. It was a light, festive read that was certainly enjoyable, but the characters didn't really develop, and the story seemed rushed. I feel like it could have been much better.

Great story but..... There better be a sequel cuz that was one abrupt ending. Other than that it's a great story

?????. First book I have read by this author. Enjoyed until the last page, then, what? Just ended abruptly. Have to agree with others that it seemed the author just stopped. Perhaps a sequel?

Great read. I love all of Erin's novels, this one had a different feel. It was great!

Overly boring. No drama whatsoever, just old stuff rewritten

Very disappointed. I was so looking forward to reading this, but the book left me feeling like it ended midway. Not the best work from one of my favorite authors.

Seriously?. How was this "unfinished" book published? I have read and loved all of Elin Hilderbrand's books. I was really looking forward to reading this and I cannot get over my disappointment. It was a waste of time!

Really sub-par!. I had really looked forward to this book but was really disappointed from beginning to end, Plot was way over the top. Perhaps it could have used a few more months op preparation!

Disappointing. I've been looking forward to reading this book for months and honestly it's the first one I've ever read of hers that I was so disappointed in. Totally agree with another reviewer that the whole book seemed rushed and the story just ended. Not in a cliffhanger way, but in a way that I felt she was just tired of writing and quit. I wish I wouldn't have wasted my money on it.

Nice Winter book to curl up too.. Love, drama, snow....what more could one want! This book leaves the reader wanting more....what’s to come next...

Not her best. I am a big fan of Elin Hildebrand but this was not her best work. Was an easy of enough read but would have liked more from the characters and a better ending.
