You by Caroline Kepnes Book Summary

NOW A HIT NETFLIX SERIES
A NEW YORK TIMES AND USA TODAY BESTSELLER

“Hypnotic and scary.” —Stephen King

“I am riveted, aghast, aroused, you name it. The rare instance when prose and plot are equally delicious.” —Lena Dunham

From debut author Caroline Kepnes comes You, one of Suspense Magazine’s Best Books of the Year, and a brilliant and terrifying novel for the social media age.

When a beautiful, aspiring writer strides into the East Village bookstore where Joe Goldberg works, he does what anyone would do: he Googles the name on her credit card.

There is only one Guinevere Beck in New York City. She has a public Facebook account and Tweets incessantly, telling Joe everything he needs to know: she is simply Beck to her friends, she went to Brown University, she lives on Bank Street, and she’ll be at a bar in Brooklyn tonight—the perfect place for a “chance” meeting.

As Joe invisibly and obsessively takes control of Beck’s life, he orchestrates a series of events to ensure Beck finds herself in his waiting arms. Moving from stalker to boyfriend, Joe transforms himself into Beck’s perfect man, all while quietly removing the obstacles that stand in their way—even if it means murder.

A terrifying exploration of how vulnerable we all are to stalking and manipulation, debut author Caroline Kepnes delivers a razor-sharp novel for our hyper-connected digital age. You is a compulsively readable page-turner that’s being compared to Gone Girl, American Psycho, and Stephen King’s Misery.

Not a bad read. It was worth reading. It kept my attention, but It's not a book I would rave about though.

BEST BOOK EVER!!!!!. I never write reviews for books so you have to know that this one was amazing! It was so suspenseful & kept me on edge! I need to find more books that are similar to this! Excellent read!

Loved this book. Compelling, addictive, tragic funny at times, cringe-worthy at times. I cannot wait to read Hidden Bodies next and find out what happens next to Joe.

Waste of time. Complete waste of time.

its a book?!. wait. ITS A BOOK?! i wish i would’ve known this before i watched the series on Netflix. I most definitely would’ve read it.

Captivating.. Honestly, I picked up this book at my friends house. Something about it drew me in, and when I started reading it, I could not put it down. It is a very dark book, with a lot of unexpected twists and turns. It shows the extreme end of a psychopath and how so much work goes into the way they think. I think it’s exquisite.

loved it. really easy read

Better characters than the series. Really enjoyed it! A fun and creepy read. About two-thirds of the way in, the book felt like it was getting too long, but picked up again promptly. Great ending and lead up to the ending.

👍🏻. Kept me hooked better than the show

Suspenseful and thought provoking. Really makes you figure out the line between obsession and love.

!!. Enthralling! This story had me rooting for the bad (and hating that I was) up to the last page. A twisted story that had me hoping for "the best" through the whole book. The negative feedback seems to come from people who wanted loose ends tied and all questions answered at the end. This is a disturbing story narrated by a sociopath. A different (and disturbing) perspective for many of us, but interesting, clever, and authentic for sure.

Holy cow!. It was so hard for me to put this book down! One minute, I’m so envious of the love and attention Beck is getting from Joe. And then the next I’m angry and terrified for her and wanting to scream at her to run away from him! It’s sexy, thrilling, romantic, triggering and edge of your seat kind of book. 100 out of 10 stars for sure!

You. Thought it could happen again and again. Meandshe!

You. NASTY. WASTE OF MONEY.

Scary and exciting. I went on holiday and read this book in the matter of days. I love the characters, especially Joe- so well developed and a dark humor that is manageable yet terrifying.

Love love love. ❤️

Wow!. Deliciously twisted!

Loved. Really liked it

I only listened to the preview 😔 but it was 😊. It was really good but I only read the preview but it was super interesting I wish I could listen to the whole thing for free but I can’t. 😔

A winner is YOU. This was an interesting read. I found myself simultaneously rooting for and despising the "protagonist" with every page. The psychotic nature of the main character was displayed very well through the writing. Creepy and sad together.

You.. Keeps you at the edge of your seat✨ a masterpiece🖤

Creepy. Loved the book, and then enjoyed the TV series after....although the book was much better and the show was very different. Great characters, that I both loved and hated at the same time!

Crazy Joe. I've heard of this book a lot so I finally broke down and read it. I admit I was expecting it to me more horrific and mysterious from some of the reactions. I actually chuckled at some of the things going through Joe's mind. That's what this story really was, a tale from inside Joe's head. It was a pretty interesting place to be. No, I wouldn't want a real person like this in my life, but as far as characters go, he's pretty fascinating. He kind of won me over actually.

Wow!!. Through out the whole book I was on Joes side. I almost feel guilty for being happy that he gets away with it but I'm sure if it was through Beks point of view I would have rooted for her instead. Great read!

Page turner for sure.. This story is electric. I read it in one sitting. If you like a good lunatic murderer this books for you.

👍🏽. Joe has a desperate need to be loved. It’s his number 1 motivator, he’s not truly happy unless he has a woman by his side that loves him. He kills anyone that’s gets in the way of that. I feel as if technology would’ve been his downfall. 1 look at the location of his phone of his victim’s phone and the cops would knw they were in the same location. That their phones were in his apartment for periods of time when they were presumed to be missing. He had keepsakes stashed. Beck said “you knw” a lot. It was annoying and almost unbearable to read her dialogue because she asked that so much. The overuse of AND instead of commas. I understand that’s how Joe thought and no one thinks in perfectly grammatically correct English. The book was good, I’m extremely surprised he didn’t get caught.

Great, original writing. Original story set in a modern world when there is over sharing of your life on social media. Great writing and best villain I have read in a non classical literature book ever.

Captivating and obsessive. Absolutely loved this book!! I watched the series and decided to give the book a read to pass the time during a vacation, and couldn’t put it down! Definitely better than the show, and also different in many ways. 10/10 recommend for anyone who saw the show and fell in love.

idk. very good. i mean not the best thing i’ve ever read but i liked it. i’m too tired to be writing this but yeah it was a good little read.

Good book overall, Intriguing Story. I liked the book overall it was very well-written. I especially liked the repeated use of YOU. But I didn’t like the ending very much as it was surprising & I guess I thought I’d get more after investing my time to read all the 823 pages. I recommend definitely reading the book before watching the series so you are not robbed of so much of the goodness of the book.

I finished it in 24 hours. Best thriller I’ve ever read. (And I read a lot) I couldn’t put this one down. Super addictive and the sequel is just as good!

Amazing. Love this

Enthralling. This book wraps around your mind and doesn’t let go! Horrifying and yet so alluring, you won’t be able to put it down.

Oddly Satisfying. Great read! Strangely intense and fascinating. I couldn't put this book down!

Beautifully Haunting. I watched Raise the Red Lantern last year and this book left me with the same feeling. I won’t soon for get this book. This book made me laugh out loud at points—Joe’s narration is so manic and insane he ends being very funny at times—and by the end I felt genuinely sorrowful. It took me a bit to get through it, as the narrative style is a bit intense and can definitely tire you out, but I always wanted to pick up the book again. Wonderful book!

You-Not as good as the series. If you’ve watched the first season of You and you’re thinking of reading the book, I urge you to reconsider. Find a book that is more worthy of your time. Although we know the main character Joe is a stalker and a sociopath, we still find ourselves watching, intent to discover what he will do next, just how far he will go to gain and keep the love and affection of the object of his obsession, Beck. Both Joe and Beck’s characters in the series have their share of flaws, but they still manage to portray many redeemable qualities which leaves us secretly wishing they could live happily ever after in spite of ourselves. This is where the book falls flat. There is no character development. Both Joe as well as Beck have no substance. They are truly just horrible people. Joe is apathetic and Beck is materialistic. In the end, you discover that you really don’t care whether they live happily ever after or if they even live at all.

Love it!!. Loved it!!!!! Even better then the show!!!

Ick. Just so so disturbing. I like a good thriller and page turner. This one I just felt gross reading….and was almost annoyed that once started I wanted to see how it ended. It is dark and a bit stomach turning. I honestly wanted to just delete it but then skimmed to get to the end to just know if was going to stay as gross all the way through. And it does. Well written and does give you this eery perspective of the stalker.

Meh. Felt like the story was for early teenagers, dark but not good dark.

You (Book #1).. I did not enjoy reading this book, not all all. An author can def write from a male stalker perspective, but don't make it misognyistic and sexist. Plus, I swear Caroline Kepnes is obsessed with Stephen King...he better get a restraining order. 👀😐

wow. AMAZING. It is a long long book but it was intense and terrifying. It really makes you think about the inner workings of a persons mind

This book was a decent read.. There are some differences between this and the show but this still is an exciting story to read nonetheless. Gotta say though that a lot of it is of Joe rambling about something that feels like it could’ve been cut out and made the book a bit shorter, drags a bit. A fun read if you want something to keep you occupied but if you’ve seen the show no need to read this book tbh

I liked it (but I loved Hidden Bodies). Excellent writing. I’ll admit it; most of the time, I found myself on Joe’s team. Then again, Beck is a horrible human being. You is great, and Hidden Bodies is even better. You is college 🥳 Hidden Bodies is grad school 🧐

Turn back to fiction. Have been a long time non fiction reader but this book...this book has turned the tide! Bravo!

Waste of $ and time. I couldn’t get past the first couple of chapters. This is so badly written.

Just WOW. I love suspense novels and this BY FAR is one of all time favorites. If you love mystery and want a good read I suggest you give it a go.

You...rock. The author is a real word smith. Fantastic writing.

Loved it. Couldn’t stop reading. Page turner

Disturbing. The thing I found most disturbing about this novel is how I occasionally found myself rooting for Joe. That is a result of the first-person narrative forcing you to see the world only through the antagonist‘s eyes. It was a great book. It will mess with your perspective.

You. If you like getting an up close and personal view inside the head of a creepy douchebag, you'll really like this. I could have watched an episode of Criminal Minds and gotten the same thing in a much shorter period of time.

You have got to read this!. What an unusual book! This is not at all what I was expecting and not your typical "stalker" book. That being said, I really liked it! If you enjoy books about people who are completely dysfunctional (to say the least), then this book is for you! It was very fast paced and hard to put down. The writing was unique, clever and, at times, quite funny. This novel put a very creative, disturbing twist on your usual "stalker" story. I am very impressed and will most definitely be looking out for more books by Caroline Kepnes in the future. I received this ARC courtesy of NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.

Unsettling, in a good way. The fact that the narration of the book is coming from a complete creep, stalker & potential sociopath, is what has me coming back for more. The Character is Charming but also terrifying. Very excited this book got picked up for a Netflix adaptation and can not wait to watch that.
