The Year We Fell Down

The Year We Fell Down by Sarina Bowen Book Summary

My whole life changed in the blink of an eye.

I was supposed to start college on the Harkness Women’s hockey team. Now I’m showing up in a wheelchair instead.

Everything about my new life is difficult, and there’s only one person who understands. Across the hall, in the other handicapped-accessible dorm room, lives the too-delicious-to-be real Adam Hartley. His leg is broken in two places.

We bond over broken elevators and hockey games. We’re just friends, of course, until one night when things fall apart. Or fall together. All I know is that I’m falling. Hard.

But can Hartley love someone as broken as me? His deep brown eyes hold their own demons. While my troubles are visible for everyone to see, his are hidden deep inside…

- The Year We Fell Down4 star

Touching college age drama featuring a first love, dealing with a new permanent disability, and learning to trust others.

- The Year We Fell Down5 star

What a beautifully written story. I had 2 friends in wheelchairs most of their lives. I was able to relate the things Callahan went thru to try and have a normal live. She did it . This is a true love story with a happy ending.

- Love the book & I don’t like reading5 star

Loved the outcome of the story, I hope it continues throughout the rest of the books to see how they end up! Hate to say but like the outcome of 50 shades😂

- This is a good one!5 star

I really fell in love with the characters and found the story to be realistic.

- Year without skates5 star

I really enjoyed this book about two people in college who are on crutches at best, but are no longer able to skate and play hockey. They meet and get together to play video hockey as one of them learns how to live again after an injury sustained while playing hockey.

- Impressed5 star

Really enjoyed Corey because she wasn't the dumb girl like always in books! Sweet little read! I liked how the author kept the characters genuine.

- Love!!!4 star

I don't know why or how I waited so long to read this one! I'm kicking myself now, because I loved every tension filled second! Hartley and Corey are an amazing sports romance couple right up there with the best of them! This book will tear at your heartstrings and let you know relive the first stirrings of young love...and maybe even a bit of feeling an unrequited love. I even had an actual tear from this one and that's super hard to come by these days! It was such a real and sweet moment. I loved their friendship first and then their love for each other.

- The Year We Fell Down5 star

Awesome read! Enjoyed the characters very much, their maturity and bravery. Will be looking to read more by this author! They only thing I didn’t care for were the grammar errors, they were distracting.

- Hooked on Sarina stories4 star

This was the first Sarina Bowen book I've read and it made a fan. I enjoy an occasional NA book and anything with a sports angle has got me hooked. The characters were sweet and I loved how they started as friends. Thank you for a great HEA story.

- Simply amazing!5 star

This book is my go to reread when I'm in a book rut. This book has complex characters, a well fleshed out story line, secondary characters you can't wait to learn more about, steamy scenes, & that perfect HEA. I highly recommend this book.

It was an enjoyable read. There were some spelling errors though.

- The Year We Fell Down5 star

This book is fantastic, filled with so much emotion & passion. Truly showed the side of someone with a disability & how they want to be treated the same as anyone else.

Beautifully written, raw, realistic. A wonderful ride. I can't wait to read more!

- When we fell5 star

This amazing start to a 5* series begins with Corey starting college and moving in with her roommate. She meets her neighbor, Adam Hartley, who lives across the hall. Hartley played hockey with her older brother, and treats her like a little sister for most of the semester. Since they are both disabled for the time being, she is in a wheelchair and he has crutches for now, they share meals and such together. They get to know one another and become good friends. Is that all there is? Corey cannot help but fall for her friend who she has so much in common with. He is just so attractive and fun. Hartley, bless him, does not suspect a thing. He lovingly refers to them together as the "gimps" and takes it all in stride. When it all changes, can Corey be the priority? I found this story to be so terrific! Fun, inspirational, and hot. This is a keeper for the shelf.

- Whooo yee!4 star

Let me tell you, I've always wanted to read this story since I first saw it, and I'm glad I did. It's a touching romantic story. It was just very REAL, and beautiful. Highly recommend it to everyone

- Heartwarming5 star

4.5-5 heartwarming stars It’s funny how, sometimes, the least expected things can create a bond like no other. Corey Callahan and Adam Hartley found that out in the worst way. She expected to start Harkness College as a varsity ice hockey player. But a serious accident means that Corey Callahan will start school in a wheelchair instead. Across the hall, in the other handicapped-accessible dorm room, lives the too-delicious-to-be real Adam Hartley, another would-be hockey star with his leg broken in two places. They bond over economics 101, balancing dining trays and rockey video game. They both know what they’re missing and together they find strength to keep moving forward. The problem is: Corey starts falling for this guy. The bigger problem is: he is taken. The biggest problem is: he is also falling for her, but he doesn’t know it (yet). I liked the story very much. The author was able to write something that (I think) is really hard to deal with every day, but still did it with lots o humor. The hero, Hartley, reminded me of Cameron from Wait for You. They both are funny, witty and seriously hot! I also liked the way that Corey thought. Of course it’s difficult to deal with the fact that she could probably never walk again and she really tells us how it is “I was perfect” I said “and I didn’t even know”. “No” he whispered into my ear. “no, no. Perfect isn’t real”. I took a deep, shaky breath, and the feel of his strong arms around me began to feel steadying. “There’s no more perfect, Callahan. Now there’s only really damned good”. But at the same time, she lets us know that there are people in worst conditions than hers and that she’s grateful that she can move around and was still able to go college. Together, Corey and Hartley are super cute! He treats her just like she deserves (well, like any girl deserves to be treated)… “Hartley? I… I can’t just be a hookup. Maybe some girls can pull that off, but…” He put two fingers over my lips. “You have me, Callahan.” His hand slid to cup my cheek, and I leaned into its warmth. “You’re the first person I want to talk to in the morning, and the last thing I want to see at night”. But, if I liked the book that much, why did I give 4.5 stars? Well, the answer is simple: it really is a good book. I laughed a lot and I cried too. However, there was something missing in the story… It’s sweet, but there was no “Oh my God! What’s going to happen now?” moment. So, yeah! 4.5 stars for lack of a “tam-dam-dam” .

The college athlete in me appreciated the storyline of what we do when our athletic world is changed. I appreciated the characters' perspectives and the message of everyone having their own need for shovels. I liked the strong female character and her journey. I will read more books by this author. It was the perfect read for a Midwest Friday night in May.

- Unexpectedly Excellent5 star

I say unexpectedly excellent because as someone very long out of college I didn’t think I would connect with the characters enough to enjoy it. But it was on the free list so why not, right? The writing was so good and the characters and plot so well developed that it didn’t matter that college kids aren’t really relatable to me. They were written exactly as they should have been...young people on the brink of maturity who have to deal with heavy situations that make them mature a bit faster, but not overly so. The world of someone with a permanent injury and accessibility challenges was eye opening and also really well done, weaving in everyday issues most people don’t realize or notice without being so heavy on the details or overly redundant in the storytelling that it detracted from the personal aspect of the plot, or the current scene. My only complaint is I felt the ending was a little abrupt and could have used a good meaty epilogue. Still a well-deserved 5 stars though so do yourself a favour and one click now. :)

- 5 stars!5 star

First things first I loved this book. I saw it spoke of highly on a book reviewers page I follow and stored it away for future reference which I often do and forget about. There was something about this book though that I couldn't stop thinking about. I had just finished a novella about a high school romance so this seamed like the obvious next choice to read. A romance featuring a slightly older couple. I read the free sample and was instantly pulled in. This book is written from both his and her perspective. I started this book from where the sample left off half way through chapter 3 in the morning and I finished it the same day. Likeable characters you really wanted things to finally go right for!

- Wow😉5 star

This is the best book I've read so far this year... The main characters made this book unique and I loved it.

- Good read4 star

Enjoyable book, finished in a day. Adam turned out to be an alright guy (gotta get near the end to see it though).
