To Kill a Mockingbird

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee Book Summary

Voted America's Best-Loved Novel in PBS's The Great American Read

Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning masterwork of honor and injustice in the deep South—and the heroism of one man in the face of blind and violent hatred

One of the most cherished stories of all time, To Kill a Mockingbird has been translated into more than forty languages, sold more than forty million copies worldwide, served as the basis for an enormously popular motion picture, and was voted one of the best novels of the twentieth century by librarians across the country. A gripping, heart-wrenching, and wholly remarkable tale of coming-of-age in a South poisoned by virulent prejudice, it views a world of great beauty and savage inequities through the eyes of a young girl, as her father—a crusading local lawyer—risks everything to defend a black man unjustly accused of a terrible crime.

- A Masterpiece5 star

This is one of the best books I’ve ever read. My friend let me borrow her copy, and I was hooked. The majority of the book gives off a calm, summery feeling that you got as a child whenever school ended for the year. Many of the characters are likable, the plot line is intriguing, and the writing is beautiful.

- To Kill a Mockingbird-14 yr old perspective5 star

I have never had a book hit me as hard emotionally as To Kill a Mockingbird. This book challenges your mind with countless hidden messages and the many political issues facing the reader. I have never been this emotionally impacted by a novel, and I encourage everyone to read it.

- Eh2 star

It’s fine, but not “classic" material

- Boring1 star

Will it’s just not intending at all, but some people do. But to me it’s a boring book. Also most of the kids in middle school and high school hate this book. The book is just so dry and boring. Just don’t ever start the because you will never finish it.

- Beautiful classic. Must read!5 star

The first time I ever read TKAM was back in 8th grade of middle school. It’s been almost 3 years since then, and I’ve read this book three times in total. To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee takes place in a fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama during the 1930s when the Great Depression occurred and racial inequality was a huge issue. Lawyer Atticus Finch teaches his children Jem and Scout the reality to racial discrimination, proper morality, and better understandment of people. I love this book for all sorts of aspects. This book uses great diction, although it’s understandable with context clues. This helps me improve my own writing. Additionally, I admire the characters, especially Atticus. He is a prime example of a qualified human, who acknowledges flaws yet does not show any sign of prejudice towards it. This helps me with my wellbeing and puts critical thinking upon my own morality. This book contains a lot of suspense too with the children’s fabrication of Boo Radley. Overall, I admire this book and it’s no question to why it’s a classic.

- Kill Mockingbird4 star

It’s a great book.

- Gross1 star

I hated this book so much. Who cares about some little kids! The trial was horrible. What does a mockingbird have to do with this book. The people aren’t even trying to kill a mockingbird!!

- Boring1 star

Not the best book. May teach many good lessons but isn’t appealing in anyway. Extremely boring and uninteresting.

- Boring.1 star

This book is boring, especially the beginning. I usually love the books assigned to us for summer reading, but this one wasn’t interesting.

- Quintessential American Read5 star

If someone asks my favorite book? "To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee." This book is required reading for any person living in the United States.

- Excellent5 star

- Fantastic5 star

This book was very slow to start, but it had so many different climaxes towards the middle/end of the story that you were on the edge of your seat, and from the courthouse to the last page, you felt a sensation of community as well as fear of the unknown.

- A Classic5 star

I agree with an earlier reviewer that this novel is one the best of the 20th century. Courage and honesty beats hatred and ignorance in a tale that one feels hopeful after reading.

- Best book i've ever read.5 star

I'd keep reading this book if it went on forever. I wish it did.

- A Classic Story5 star

Even after forty years, and rereading this novel, it is still an outstanding read.

- One of the Greatest!5 star

This is one of the most masterfully written stories of all time. If you enjoy reading in any way whatsoever, this classic is a must. This is as much an object lesson as it is entertainment, but what a wonderful story it is.

Amazing! Breathtaking! Love this book

- To Kill A Mockingbird5 star

Very nice book. It was written beautifully and I can't wait to read the next one!

- To Kill a Mockingbird5 star

I read this book for the first time in high school & loved it then. However, reading it again through the eyes of a 50+ yr old grandmother is something altogether different. I don't remember crying the first time. White folk (such as I) have come a long way, but not nearly far enough. One can only hope... This story shall remain at the top of my list of the best ever written. Thank you Miss Lee.

- Love love love!5 star

This is one of the very few books that I've read while in Mr. Brengel's class and I can proudly say that I feel completely satisfied. -3rd Period, Chachi ; CO 2017

Must read book

- Good Read4 star

I recall reading this book in high school (mid-90's) for English class. It's touted as one of the Great American Literary works. Needless, to say, before purchasing on iTunes I'd forgotten what this book was all about. Glad to have reread it, (though it is extremely slow in the beginning-first several chapters), because it's about racism, socioeconomic divides, life in a small town and how it's true that children are an extension of their parents/environments (for the most part). Most behaviors are learned. This is a good, thought-provoking read that deals a healthy dish of karma in the end.

- To Kill a Mockingbird5 star

A powerful account of gallant bravery and unwavering grace, framed by the telling of the average, but entertaining, daily events of two young siblings set in a small southern town.

- Me no likey1 star

Me no likey. It was boring until like the last 50 pages, and the beginning was extremely confusing. And, to be honest one of the worst books I've been forced to read for class.

- To Kill A Mockingbird5 star

To me this is one of the best books I've ever read. Though it was hard to understand in the beginning, it was worth the time to understand it fully and picture it. I would totally recommend this to anyone I meet. Buy this book if you have spare time!

- Changed the way I see things5 star

This book really changed the way I see the world, it really makes you think like a kid would see the world as to an adult would.

- To Kill A Mockingbird3 star

At first, I didn't like this book, but now that I have finished it, I realize how much it made me think. This book challenged my faith in my Heavenly Father. This book was great and I highly recommend everyone reading it. The only thing about it was there was quite a bit of cussing in it😖.

- Great classic5 star

Reread this book in anticipation of the next book in July. this was the best novel I have read in ages, It's themes and story lines could have been in 2015. looking forward. To to the summer.

- Simply breathtaking!5 star

This story represents beautiful literature, it would be the best book in America if I could make it be.

- Mistake5 star

The alarm clock went off and scared us stiff. A minute later, nerves still tingling, Jem and I were on the sidewalk headed for home. We did not run away, Jessie sent us: before the clock wound down she was in the room pushing Jim and me out of it. It should say pushing Jem and me out of it.

- To Kill A Mockingbird5 star

This book is brings you through ups and downs, but it's an amazing book.

- Blank pages after update1 star

I updated the eBook via iBooks (version 1.0.1 (281) on Mac OSX 10.9.5) and now all pages are completely blank. Please fix.

- A classic5 star

To Kill A Mockingbird will forever be one of the classic stories that will be read by generations!

- To Kill a Mockingbird5 star
