한국 근대문학이 활짝 꽃을 피운 절정기인 1930년대에 〈조선일보〉와 〈중앙일보〉, 〈동아일보〉지에서 경쟁적으로 소설 연재를 청탁했던 당대 최고의 작가 이태준은 해방 이후 월북을 선택해 수십 년 동안 잊힌 작가였지만, 최근엔 한국문학사에서 근대 단편소설의 완성자로 재평가되고 있다.
이태준 중단편전집 1 《달밤》은 1925년 그의 등단작인 〈오몽녀〉에서부터 1935년 발표한 〈순정〉에 이르기까지 36편의 중단편소설들을 시대순으로 소개하고 있다. 이 시기 작품들은 구인회의 성격에 맞는 섬세한 묘사와 서정성을 한껏 드높여 예술적 완성도와 깊이를 유감없이 보여준다.
