The Conservatarian Manifesto Book Reviews
The Conservatarian Manifesto by Charles C.W. Cooke Book Summary
A call to arms for the growing movement of “Conservatarians”—members of the right who are fiscally conservative but socially liberal—and a fascinating look at conservatism’s past and future.
There is an underserved movement budding among conservatives, in which fiscal responsibility, constitutional obedience, and controlled government spending remain crucial tenets, but issues like gay marriage and drug control are approached with a libertarian bent.
In The Conservatarian Manifesto, Charles C.W. Cooke engages with the data and the philosophy behind this movement, applauding conservatarianism as a force that can help Republicans mend the many ills that have plagued their party in recent years. Conservatarians are vexed by Republicans’ failure to cut the size and scope of Washington D.C., but they are critical of some libertarians for their unacceptable positions on abortion, national defense, and immigration. They applaud conservatives’ efforts to protect Second Amendment rights—efforts that have recently been wildly successful—but they see the War on Drugs as an unmitigated disaster that goes against everything conservatives ought to value.
All movements run the risk of stagnation, and of losing touch with the principles and values that made them successful in the first place. In this book, Charles Cooke shows the way back to a better and more honest conservatism that champions limited government, reality-based policy, and favor for the smallest minority of all: the individual.

The Conservatarian Manifesto. I was totally impressed by this book on conservatism and the battles worth fighting, but most importantly those that are not. This is the new direction conservatism needs to take. It need not be confrontational and merely needs to reflect that common sense we all so desperately crave. I think this book has achieved that and more.
Interesting Approach. In this volume, Cooke points out the dichotomy of belief lumped by the media into the term "Republican." He teases out the threads of libertarianism and conservatism, and he largely succeeds in putting together what can either be seen as a fresh approach, or perhaps a return to a more Burkean viewpoint. I recommend it.
Great. Clear, concise and illuminating.
A Redeeming Read. This reader found The Conservatarian Manifesto a very calming read. Charles C.W. Cooke laid out his positions on several key issues and I felt relieved. As a conservative-libertarian hybrid, finding your place within the Republican Party is difficult. Listening to vast portions of the media, academia, and other institutions berate non-existent or straw versions of beliefs you acquired through honest deliberation with yourself and others can be at times infuriating and exhausting. Cooke's Manifesto reminded this reader of why my beliefs are what they share, why they deserve to be communicated, defended, and cherished.
Excellent Read. This book is great for classical liberals disillusioned by the GOP and the fledgling Libertarian Party. Cooke is a gifted writer with a pleasant prose, and his analysis is just as sharp. Highly recommend this, especially for young conservatives.
Left wanting more. Anyone who has read Mr. Cooke's work knows what a pleasure it is to read, and there is no difference here. The prose is clear and concise, and overall enjoyable. That said, I was hoping for a more in depth if not scholarly treatment of the intersection of conservatism and libertarianism but instead received mostly a exposition of Mr. Cooke's own views. He misses an opportunity to diagnose and suggest remedies for the great divide, and instead provides what could have been reprints of his own NRO pieces. Overall, this is an enjoyable read but not a scholarly achievement.
Extremely good book!. Explains the ideological civil war within the Republican Party and the conservative movement in general and what we can do to correct it.
