The Sound of Glass by Karen White Book Summary

The New York Times bestselling author of the Tradd Street novels explores a Southern family’s buried history, which will change the life of the woman who unearths it, secret by shattering secret.

Two years after the death of her husband, Merritt Heyward receives unexpected news—Cal’s family home in Beaufort, South Carolina, bequeathed by his reclusive grandmother, now belongs to Merritt.

In Beaufort, the secrets of Cal’s unspoken-of past reside among the pluff mud and jasmine of the ancestral Heyward home on the Bluff. This unknown legacy, now Merritt’s, will change and define her as she navigates her new life—a life complicated by the arrival of her too young stepmother and ten-year-old half brother.

Soon, in this house of strangers, Merritt is forced into unraveling the Heyward family past as she faces her own fears and finds the healing she needs in the salt air of the Lowcountry.

Suffocated by misery. I wish I could have my money back! This book is so predictable you can see the plot lines a mile away. Why so many people stay in oppressive ruts is beyond me. Generation after generation passing along misery, duty over happiness. I didn’t like any of the stereotypical characters except for Owen and even he was predictable. How this got so many positive reviews is beyond me.

Great Story. I liked how the characters were developed. This handled a difficult life situation and inserted a fascinating twist!

Great Story!. I anticipated this book for months, and I was certainly not disappointed! It was every bit as good as I had hoped! I enjoyed both the current and historical storylines, and loved the characters! The setting provided a wonderful backdrop for the story, and all of the aspects came together to create a spectacular novel! When Merritt Heyward finds out that she inherited her late husband's family home, she travels from Maine to where it is located in Beaufort, South Carolina. Her stepmother and half brother that Merritt has had nothing to do with arrive, looking for family ties in the wake of her father's death. Merritt meets her brother-in-law, Gibbes Heyward, for the first time. She soon learns that this family has been keeping dark secrets for many years. We learn in the historical storyline some events that happened in Gibbes' grandmother's life. As past and present events tie together, some shocking secrets come out. Great book! I will absolutely be reading it again. This book is a good example of why Karen White is one of my favorite authors. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing an ARC in return for an honest review.

The Sound of Glass. I am still figuring out I feel about this book. Since the characters are still sitting with me, and I find myself caring about them and thinking about them, it must have been a pretty well written book. I didn’t want it to be finished; I found myself wanting more. It was a emotional read and I am not sure this is the best time for me to write a review. However iBooks won’t let me move from this page until I do!

Terrific book. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The different view points of the characters was an interesting touch. I'm definitely reading more books by Karen White.

Love Love Love this book!. I didn’t think I’d like any book/s more than the Tradd St Series, but this is my new Favorite! I’m going to re-read it and get my own Pink Journal! Absolutely love all the life lessons! Cant wait for my next Karen White book!

A great summer read, any time of year. I’m a long time fan of Karen White and this story did not disappoint. But I have two problems with it and they are somewhat spoiler in nature. So don’t read on if you don’t want the story spoiled. The first has to do with why or how Cal managed to track down Merritt and if it was part of a nefarious plan to exact revenge. The second unanswered question for me was why Cal called his mother a murderer. She had nothing to do with the deaths of anyone. Other than these hangover like dangling unsolved questions I loved the book.

The sound of Glass. I loved this as I have every book Karen has written. She tells stories like no one else.

Mystery and romance. I really enjoyed the book! I love mysteries and it combined that with a love story not only with a man but finding and knowing a brother and a stepmother! Good book!

So moving. This book was so inspirational to me. I have always been intrigued by South Carolina and that area and the graphics which were used were beautiful and then the back story ; support for the the story about abuse was just really really heart touching.

I'm sorry this book ended...... ....finally🙄. That being said, I really enjoyed this book. Although it wasn't a genre that I usually (ever) read, it was heartwarming, real, great characters and a story of the life of people, sometimes joyful, sad and scary. It was, at the heart, a story of abused women and the men behind the abuse. It made me re-think the mother that I had, who had withstood the abuse for years and turned into the hardened, bitter woman who ignored her own little girl and never offered words or gestures of comfort to her after her beatings.
